Row of hard to find sauces in Maui.
    Tash M.

It all started when I wanted to make ma yi shang tsu. I missed home, and just wanted to make something that reminded me of it, and my grandma. I drove to 4 different stores and couldn't find doubanjiang. I was also out of hong cu (red vinegar). Le sigh. I miss the city, lol. Kelly's was my last stop. And, guess what? I found it, here, in this nondescript store. They, by far, have a pretty comprehensive stock of Asian condiments on the island of Maui. I have found things that TJ, Tamura, and Island Grocery depot does not have: thick soy, black vinegar, preserved vegetables, bean paste, fermented tofu.....you name it. The front lady is always nice too, making conversation like "what's for dinner?" Pleasant people are always appreciated. In addition to the sauces, they have 2 rows or so of "normal" foods, like canned tomato sauce, pasta, ramen (not too much, just your basics Sapporo, mama, indomie), snacks, candy, chips, bread; another row of frozen foods like fish, meats, potstickers, coconut milk; another row of drinks, small dairy section, and refrigerated section with banchan-type pickles, kimchi, etc. The front near the cashier, they have some toiletries and cooked foods like manju, tupig/sumat for eg. I did notice they are lacking in Asian spices like Sichuan peppercorns (go to Rowena for spices and produce), meats/fish and produce (could be due to covid), but you could stop here for most of your grocery needs.

I come here if I'm in the area and I need veggies or certain other things. I really don't like to run in an another store if I just need one or 2 things. This store is cute and small. Always have fresh veggies. They carry fruits, veggies, meats, Asian things and canned goods. They also carry fresh baked goods. I got the cascaron so ono when it's fresh. I always get the kindest guy that cashes me out. He's super friendly and always puts a smile on my face. I will update my review when I come again so I can take more pictures of things in the store. Let's support this local business please.

"Kelly's Superette" is the third designation of this onetime iconic Maui grocer, Ah Fook's Supermarket. Ah Fook's was sold a few years ago to another local business. False promises of carrying on the store's legacy failed as longtime employees slowly left after being treated "badly" according to first-hand accounts. The employees are the backbone of any business. Lose your support, and the house crumbles. Mind you, groceries can be found elsewhere too! THE NEWEST STORE: Still located in the Kahului Shopping Center and in the same corner spot of the former Maui Style Market and prior to that the post-fire location of the "new" Ah Fook's, the only thing that changed was the name on the building. Upon entering, I noticed that the refrigerated section was almost barren, void of any seafood, meats and poultry. Everything else was still well-stocked, including their frozen foods section. My mission was to pick up a bottle of marinade, specifically the Ah Fook's Korean Style Sauce. ($5.99, 32 oz.). Even though the Ah Fook's name is in the history books, I'm ecstatic they still make this as it goes excellent with chicken. The sauce is dark and well-balanced with sweet, savory and garlicky flavors. I marinate boneless, skinless chicken thighs for two days then bake them for a scrumptious yakitori chicken-style dish. For raw peanut shoppers, they carry pre-packaged bags ranging from one to two pounds. And, they're of the normal size, not the humongous ones that have no taste. At the register were bags of fresh beetle nuts, something very popular with the Micronesian population. Never saw them before today! Eating them turns your gum lines black. Don't ask as I have no idea, LOL. SERVICE: I was happy to see one of the male workers running the register that I recognized from the old Ah Fook's Store (the big one that burnt down). He's a friendly and humble guy, the kind that should be working in a store with roots as deep as Ah Fook's! He's been there that long which is awesome! BUSINESS HOURS: M - F: 7:30a - 6:30p Sa: 7:30a - 5:30p Su: 8:00a - 5:00p OVERALL: I'm not sure who "Kelly" is but I wish her/him well in their new endeavor. I'll try to support this small business more often.

When we first arrived, we missed this gem!…read more Mind you I'm gluten intolerant so Echigo is the only beer I can enjoy that tastes like beer. I went to both Times location, foodland and Tamora and they were sold out and or haven't carried it in a while. I had to call IGD at both locations and this was the one that confirmed they had it in stock. Customer service is legit and I felt the aloha spirit. Fairly priced and or good for most other groceries and clean. I highly recommend!

I like the exchange of ideas, and found her easy to converse with. The cashier was helpful in signing us up to be a member. The store offers a wide variety of items, not just fresh groceries, frozen items and drinks. They also sell bulk paper products- plates, utensils, cups, bowls etc., and quick ready-made hot food to go. The store has wide aisles, adequate parking, and a good variety of food items. I'm amazed that you don't have to look for a cart as the customers return their carts where they belong. Good alternative to the super stores that sell bulk items; however, you may have to still visit other stores to purchase everyday kitchen ware. I'll definitely be coming back to shop here.
