Bad day at Safeway. I've had problems at this store before, but nothing like my encounter today.
Saturday afternoon, was in the neighborhood, decided to pick up a pre-cooked turkey potroast for dinner. They were sold out. All that was left in the warmer were rotisserie chickens and one turkey breast. I grabbed it, although it looked underdone. No problem. I could broil it for a while after I got home. Decided to pick up some chow mein and steamed veggies from Tik Tok Wok next to the warmer, even though overpriced at $8.99/lb. Sometimes, you gotta splurge a little. The veggies, what was left of them, were horrid. One look and I decided the chow mein was enough.
So I headed to an express check-out with my 2 items. Only two lanes were open, but one had a single customer in front of me, and he had just one item. I thought I would be out of there in a few minutes. Wrong.
The cashier was on the phone, totally ignoring the man waiting to check out. I heard parts of her conversation about how she had dropped a customer's cake and called the bakery department for a replacement, but nobody answered. She wanted whoever was on the phone to go and get a new cake. Then, she hung up, and left the register!
She went to the one next to it and started checking customers out there! Not a word to us who were in her original line.
By then, I'd had enough. More people were in line behind me, and as I grabbed my two items and left, I said, "I don't need this drama." The guy behind me agreed, and got out of line, too.
I went up and down the aisle and saw there were only three other cashiers working, none at express lanes, and customers were backed up at them all.
I thought about leaving the food on an empty belt and walking out, but couldn't do it. By the time somebody noticed, it would probably end up getting thrown away.
So I went back to the original express lane, saw that somebody else was working there, three people were in line, but it was moving smoothly. So I got back in line. Just before it was my turn to check out, who shows up again? Ms. Dropped Cake.
Now I had to wait while she took over her original job! It was not a pleasant transaction. She was in a foul mood, and I I didn't want to say a word. By then, I'd been in the store over a half hour and just wanted to get out. But since I didn't have my Safeway card, I had to ask her if I should put my phone number in or give it to her.
Ho, da stink-eye I got! She said, "Wait! When it tells you, put your number in." She'll never know how close she came to wearing that chow mein. By the time I finally got out of there, my BP was maxing out and when I got home, the food was cold and I lost my appetite.
I called the store, asked for a manager, told him the whole story and said they've lost a customer. Period. He offered to reimburse me, but I wasn't interested.
They'd have to be the last place in town with food for me to go through those doors again.
I didn't go there for the first 5 years they existed, because they had displaced a lot of small businesses in that block -- a post office, hair salon, Loves bakery thrift shop, mom and pop stores.
They didn't miss my business then. They won't miss it now. And I won't miss the kind of "service" they provide! read more
