We've been to Sado a couple times, and it never dissapoints. I can honestly say it's the best Sushi in St. Louis, and in my opinion, some of the best Sushi in the U.S. My husband and I have been to Japan twice and the quality is up there right next to what we get in Japan. The worst part is deciding what you want. This last time we went with the omekase, let our waitress choose, and it was perfect. She picked things we never would have thought about, yet everything was SO good. She also did a great job of explaining every course/her thoughts on it/what we should expect. It was such a great experience. The cocktails are always fantastic, no notes. Seriously, the best splurge meal in the city. SO SO good. read more

You will only leave hungry if you hate fish. We left, uncomfortably full. Comparing Sado to Indo is not apples to apples, which my partner was trying to do. We ordered a few sashimi and we expected them to be a little fancier. That was on us. The server as with Indo, above and beyond nice, I think they are accustomed to a lot of questions. Ours was amazing, she said "we don't fork shame here" I fork shame, but she refused. Good for her! I also ordered a cocktail. I would arrive to Sado just for this cocktail, it had a coconut pillow top, that was reminiscent of a marshmallow. Delightful compliment to my savory dinner. I was very surprised at the size of Sado on the inside, we made a turn into the seating then a second turn deeper into seating. What an amazing dinner experience we had at Sado. I don't think my husband and I were ready at all for the ambiance. The hostess was able to get us seated at a table as walk-ins, even tho we would have been fine to sit at the bar. Our server was amazing but the whole team really worked together in getting our drinks and plates out. We knew we were going to have good dinner, but it was amazing especially for my husband's birthday! My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Sado, and it was one of the finest sushi experiences we've ever had. As someone who grew up in Southern California eating excellent sushi, and who has also enjoyed outstanding sushi in San Francisco, Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, I don't hand out praise lightly when it comes to sushi. Sado exceeded every expectation. We chose to sit at the sushi bar and put ourselves entirely in the hands of the chef and our server, allowing them to select our dishes throughout the evening. Every single round was outstanding. Not only was the fish incredibly fresh, but each piece was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. Our waiter explained that the fish is never frozen, which means the menu is influenced by what can be flown in and sourced at the highest quality. That commitment to freshness was evident in every bite. The cocktails were fantastic, the sake flight was expertly curated, and both complemented the meal perfectly. Just as impressive as the food was the service. The staff was knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely passionate about creating a memorable dining experience. The ambiance struck the perfect balance between upscale and comfortable, making it an ideal setting for a special occasion. Is Sado inexpensive? No. But show me a truly great sushi restaurant that is. It can't be cheap to fly in fish of this quality on a daily basis, and after experiencing the meal firsthand, the value was easy to appreciate. I've had sushi in some of the world's most respected sushi destinations, and Sado belongs in the conversation as a serious sushi restaurant. WOW!!! This place was sooo good and I will be thinking about our meal for a long time. I am a self proclaimed sushi connoisseur and this is the best sushi I've ever had. We had reservations for 5:15 at the sushi and arrived 5 minutes early, but they wouldn't seat us until 5:15 on the dot which I thought was odd. Next time we'll be sure to get there right on time! The ambiance is wonderful; beautifully designed with very tolerable noise level. Service was polite, efficient and helpful. The food, however, leaves something to be desired. The appetizers were fair (tough to go wrong with edamame), but the crispy rice with vegetarian toppings was probably prepared to be crisp,m but turned mushy in presentation as a result of the moisture from a sauce and no doubt the toppings. The fish quality here is high and nigiri would be best if left prepared traditionally rather than with the unusual topping sauces. There were only a few offerings of authentic nigiri on their list. Their sashimi platter includes three pieces of four different fish. Preparation was poor, with some cuts that looked more like pencil shavings than properly prepared slices of fish. I sent back the toro portion because it was scrap, more suited to using it for negitoro or other hand rolls. Yes, I'm a sushi snob, having enjoyed it for over six decades. Their rolls are like most sushi restaurants these days, sandwiches using nori instead of bread. Nothing at all traditional. I can't recommend this to those who enjoy "real" sushi. If you're after sushi-style food you might like it. Dinner for two with but a couple of glasses of beer was $200, inflated in part by their arbitrary 20% service surcharge. This is an overpriced rd place with mediocre offerings. We won't return. read more

That said, our total was over $200 for two, and while everything was high quality, I'm not sure it fully justified the price. We made a dinner reservation here because our favorite waitress, Elise, started working here a while ago and we haven't been to visit her. Request to be seated in her section if you want a night of warmth, attention, and culinary knowledge. Definitely need a reservation. The restaurant was full but not overwhelming. The layout was broken down in to several smaller rooms so it still felt intimate with a low noise level. We showed up early and enjoyed unique expertly crafted cocktails. I had a dirty martini with chili oil that has become my new favorite drink! Incredibly unique menu. We are huge sushi fans but the variety in the Sado menu is immense and it screams "be brave! Eat something besides salmon rolls!" The executive chef, Nick Bognar, describes the menu as Japanese Thai fusion. So we got brave! We went with the Omakase tasting which allowed our fabulous evening guide Elise to lead the event. This was a fun option that put so many menu options on our table I might not have otherwise tasted. This may be my very favorite restaurant in St. Louis. The food is just incredible. Also, great service and great drinks. One of my favorite ways to experience it is either to go during social hour (currently Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 5 to 6 PM) and order everything on the menu or you can do the Sado favorites for $120 for two people during social hour and get to try multiple things from the main menu. I've also gone where you can say that you want to spend say $75 per person and then they will just bring you a variety of things to try. This is definitely a place where you should share with others versus getting your own food so you can try all the deliciousness. read more

Phenomenal food and incredible service! My husband brought me to Sado for my birthday dinner and it was exceptional! The interior is low lighting with some cool art and overall is very vibey (great for a date night!). Our server, Kyan, was very attentive and asked for our feedback on all the dishes we ordered - he relays it all back to the chef and is appreciative of any feedback. I'm going to kick this off with please know the establishment gets very loud when busy. The acoustics are not great and anyone with hearing sensitivities should simply be aware. Ok, now that my PSA is said you must go. I had no idea that they had option to do a tasting menu. We simply gave our bartender James, a budget and he planned everything from there. It was immaculate. We wanted to try it all and he gave us the full experience with an 11 course experience. I'm not going to break it all down, but the stars of the show were: - miso ginger salad - it is one of the best salads I've found in a long time, plenty of veggies and amazing flavor and textures across the board. - Isaan Hamachi - I would fight someone for the coconut sauce in this. It was so good I nearly cried. - Japanese Pumpkin - this is one of my staples at Sado and a regular choice for me if you're looking for a vegetarian dish or non-fish item. We tried 8 types of nigiri total, they were all great but some standouts included: - scallop - salmon with Thai basil - tuna - a vegetarian eggplant option Dessert is worth it, the couple next to us said they were regulars and didn't even know they had dessert which seems like a massive missed opportunity on their part! I believe they have an in house pastry chef and the sticky toffy pudding was so dang good but my personal favorite was the pistachio ice cream. Overall, this is a hit spot and it's worth all the hype. If you ever get the chance to sit at the bar, have James plan the entire menu and start with a glass of vino verde. read more

Sado wins again. I loved my first time so much, that I had to come back several weeks later. We came here for a galentines get together and it was a perfect celebration of a love for good food. The last time I came I ubered, and this time I drove. Parking can be hard to find since it's street parking- I recommend giving yourself some time before your reservation to find a spot. I arrived early and sat at the bar. I ordered a glass of wine and was seated quickly after. We put our order in (lots of different types of food to share- the only way to do it) and loved everything we got! Gyoza, 3 rolls, steamed bun, rolls, sashimi, nigiri- all had us wanting more. I have heard so many great things about Sado, so this was a highly anticipated meal for me. We went big and got some of the priciest dishes on the menu, including the wagyu hot rock and bluefin toro sashimi. The wagyu was perfectly marbled and was the most tender meat I've had (completely melts in your mouth) but I personally like slightly more chew. The hot rock also cools pretty fast, so you have to eat it relatively quickly (makes it harder to savor each bite). The bluefin toro sashimi was also fatty in texture but surprisingly didn't have much flavor. The other ingredients included in the bowl didn't really fit well in my opinion either. But the star of the meal (and what I would focus on getting more of next time) was the nigiri. Of the nigiri I ordered, I liked the madai and benitoro the most. The rice was perfectly seasoned, and the fish was so flavorful. I particularly loved the seared flavor of the benitoro - so smoky and tender! Service was good, and the environment was a little loud for personal conversation. It was a pricy meal so it's definitely a special occasion type of meal. read more

Finally got to check out Sado on the Hill! Our experience was wonderful- from the cozy yet appealing atmosphere to the staff! We did not make reservations (recommended) but were able to get seated at the bar after a short wait. The bartender took his time to thoroughly explain the menu and all of the offerings and give us plenty of suggestions. The lychee martini was strong and made with sake I will definitely be back for the juicy fried Brussels and Vegetable Roll! we also enjoyed a nice cold brew martini at the end. Not to be dramatic, but this may just be the worst sushi I've ever had in my life and perhaps the worst restaurant that I've tried in St. Louis. We've visited Indo, the sister restaurant of Sado previously, so we came with high expectations, especially given the promising menu with nigiri and sashimi options that many sushi places in St. Louis does not offer. We ordered the Isaan Hamachi and Chawanmushi as our appetizers and ordered over 8 kinds of nigiri, including nicer cuts such as Bluefin Otoro and Sake Toro. The appetizers were great, fish cuts were all very fresh and had a great texture and mouthfeel. However, it was grossly overshadowed by the seasoning and rice. The nigiri rice was incredibly salty and acidic, with an astringent taste of vinegar and lime zest, which took away from the taste of the fresh fish. The rice was gloopy, starchy, and did not have the al dente bite that sushi rice typically has. There were also huge salt chunks in the rice, which made it an even worse experience. It honestly tasted closer to a tequila shot than sushi. When we asked the waiter if this was intentional, he confirmed that they preferred to "heavily season" their rice. Understanding that the nigiri wasn't to our liking, they were accommodating and offered to make our remaining pieces of nigiri with their maki rice instead. The maki rice was a slight improvement as it was less salty and acidic, but the texture of the rice remained the same--gluey and wet. All told, Sado was quite the disappointment, given that how much potential they had. It's astonishing how they could mess up the most foundational aspect of sushi. Perhaps I might be harsh, but for a higher end establishment where we spent over $200 for two people, I really did expect more. Between grocery store sushi and Sado, I'll be picking the former. Despite this negative experience, I do want to give a shoutout to the staff who were accommodating, the cleanliness of the restaurant, and the beautiful decor. Try Sado at your own risk. read more

Pork belly bun and mushroom bun had very distinct sauces but were both so so good and tender. All the fish was super fresh and prepped perfectly.
