Went for the first time. I have been on the hunt for affordable burritos now that prices have jumped so fast post-pandemic in the cheaper eats taqueria world. The colorful saturated decor provides a warm ambience. Very Beachy Baja vibes. I ordered the 'famous fish taco'. It is tasty, and the cilantro sauce dressing adds a good tanginess. I will say my fish piece seemed little smaller than some of the delectable looking fish tacos shown in photos here, but overall the taco is full enough with the cabbage, tomatos and dressing. It's been years since I last visited Sabor. I'm glad to say that the food and service are still outstanding. Food: for any first time customers, order the fish tacos. The fish is fried well and is very abundant. I also liked their Asada and Carnitas tacos, but the fish was the best. Chips and salsa were average. They used have a salsa bar with more salsa selections before COVID, but now it's served to you at the table. Service: the lady takin orders at the front counter is friendly and patient. Our meals were brought out timely. Ambiance: this is a very laid back and casual restaurant. You can be in and out under 1 hour. The restaurant is clean and very colorful with intriguing art. Stopped by for a super late lunch during the weekend. We had complimentary chips and salsa and also ordered guacamole, a salmon combination plate (served with rice, beans, and salad), and two tacos (one grilled mahi mahi and one carnitas). It was a ton of food for a great price and we enjoyed our meal. The tortilla chips were fried and salted to perfection, the guac was chunky and fresh, the salmon and mahi mahi were cooked well, the rice and beans were delicious sides, and my carnitas was SUPER juicy. You order at the counter and sit wherever you like. Our server was super friendly and unbothered by our special requests (extra tortilla chips, hot water with lemon, etc.). The restaurant is off of a busy street but there is a small parking lot. One star off because there was coughing and sneezing coming from the kitchen, which wasn't fun to listen to. Hidden gem in Oxnard! There's a lot of Mexican food choices in Oxnard and this is one of my faves and go to spots! I always order the fish taco, it's delicious! My partner ordered a torta, which she enjoyed. I've had both the chicken and asada burrito and they're good, although more than likely I will order the asada moving forward. Located in a shady dirty part of Oxnard, this hidden gem is serving up some tasty and authentic Mexican food. The service is fast and friendly, making it a great lunch spot. While the interior is that of any authentic Mexican restaurant, very colorful and welcoming. I had the mole, a cocoa bean based sauce with a slight spice to it, atop pieces of chicken breast. The rest of my party had the carne asada enchiladas which she said were so good she tipped again. The fish tacos are what they're known for and I can see why. The crispy fried fish on a street taco sized corn tortilla with a drizzle of some green sauce that made the taco flavor explode. I guess that's why it's called "sabor" which means flavor in Spanish. I will definitely be coming back. The horchata was perfect, not too thick, not too watery, without an overdose of cinnamon. For dessert I had the flan, which they claim to make in house. Sabor claims to have the best fish tacos and they ain't lyin! For Taco Tuesday, I wanted to try something I had never had before in my neighborhood because I love supporting local businesses. Their taco Tuesday deal is $1.99 tacos (meat options: carne asada, pollo, chorizo, and pastor). Please note the fish and shrimp tacos are not part of the taco Tuesday deal. I tried almost all of their tacos; fish, shrimp, pastor, asada, and pollo. The fish tacos stole the show! They are MUST try if you come here. Their street tacos are okay, a very good standard street taco. The service and interior were 1000/10. The vibe in here is immaculate, the decor is so vibrant and welcoming. Also, they were playing my boy Pepe Aguilar on the tv. Love it! I practiced my Spanish with the cashier and she practiced her English with me. She is such a sweetheart and told me that the location of the restaurant poses as a challenge because of all the homelessness in the area. I parked my car in the parking lot next to Sabor and walked over for lunch and I personally felt safe. Don't the neighborhood/exterior deter you! This spot is DARLING. The interior is so colorful and lively and fun! I love the chairs. I love the wall color. I love the tables. It really sets the stage for a fun meal. I ordered a fish taco, a shrimp taco, and guacamole. All three were excellent. The fish and shrimp were fresh, the tacos were flavorful, and the ratios of protein to tortilla were spot on. I apparently left a 4 star review for Sabor in 2011. I just went with in-laws, sister and her husband and had a great experience. Needed to bump them up to 5 stars and leave an update. All the tacos were good and I had a shrimp gobenador, lengua, and fish taco. They were all fantastic. The carne asada burrito was huge and a great deal. My husband and I have been coming to this place since they opened . I love their Fish Tacos, and I always order Nachos de Carné Asada con frijol entero, and a Fish Taco. Passing through Oxnard, I Yelped this place and wasn't disappointed. Cashier was super friendly and suggested the "Gobenador" shrimp taco. Hand made tortilla with shrimp, cheese, union, & bell peppers (delicious)! She also brought my cousin & I on the house fish tacos to try. OMG so tasty, finished with cilantro like sauce & cabbage. I also ordered a sope (meat, cheese, avocado, lettuce, & tomato) de carne asada (beef). Sope was hand made & meat had good seasoning. Only down fall was the cheese was mozzarella & not queso fresco (fresh Mexican cheese) to my liking. My cousin ordered a wet burrito with Chile Reyeno inside (Red Sauce on top-Mole like). Sabor is a 5 star fast Mexican food for several reasons. First of all, the ambience is authentic, I refer to the shabby chic interior that does not need to hide it's decades of wear and tear. This colorful dining area plays off of it's quirkiness in a good way. The name says everything, flavor is their goal. I tried a Chile relleno plate sans sauce with double charros. I skipped the sauce and rice due to their use of chicken broth in both. I can be a little annoying when I order at fast food Mexican food. I need to know what kind of fish is in the fish tacos, whether the beans have lard and how everything is served. The friendly staff was happy to accommodate picky Vicki and made me a delicious plate to fill me up before a long train ride. I ordered to go and the portion of bean and rice were very very small for the $14.00 I spent. The chicken in the enchiladas was extremely bland. The enchiladas were dry. Not cheesy at all. Oxnard is not quite a destination city, despite being the most populous city in Ventura County and having miles of coastline. Most Angelenos never make it past the Camarillo Outlets and those that do are usually headed to "greener pastures" in Ventura and Santa Barbara. I mean, whoever says, "Hey let's go to Oxnard for fun!" Nobody, ever. And to be honest, if it wasn't for work I would not frequent Oxnard so much since aside from chain restaurants along Highway 101 and a ton of meh-diocre Mexican restaurants scattered all over, Oxnard really sucks for food. So after perusing Yelp's mobile app, I noticed that Sabor was one of the few restaurants that had over 40 reviews and a 4 star rating. For Oxnard, 40 reviews is like 400 reviews in Los Angeles. Moreover, with a name that means flavor/taste in Spanish, I decided to give the place a try. The restaurant is on a small street that is off the beaten path of Oxnard, right before Oxnard Boulevard turns to Saviers Road. Look for a yellow and white building behind a burger joint that has a blue marlin logo on it http://bit.ly/1bcsH2f. The interior is a cozy little space that does feel like some place you would encounter in some sleepy coastal Mexican town... that is, if your gringo ass ever left the tourist traps like Señor Frog's. Since Sabor's claim to fame was their fish tacos, I ordered two tilapia fish tacos and one carne asada taco just for shits and giggles and in case the fish tacos sucked. What's also nice is that they have complimentary chips and at least four different salsas to choose from as well as roasted jalapeños and onions. The fish taco consisted of double-layered tortillas the size of an average hand topped with a shredded cabbage and diced tomato slaw, a generous piece of fried fish, and a cool Ensenada-like guac/cilantro sauce. Lemon wedges are served on the side. Normally when you order fish tacos, you never taste the fish because it has been deep-fried to the point that the fish tastes like something that has survived a nuclear holocaust. On the other hand Sabor's battered and fried fish was actually quite fishy, as in I could taste the fish. So yea, fishy in a good way and not fishy in a something's fishy way... However, the back-up carne asada taco that I ordered was so-so compared to the fish tacos and I just ended up eating the meat due to the tortilla overload from the double-layered tacos and the complimentary chips. I guess that is what I guess for ordering beef at a mariscos place. Tonto, tonto. All in all, the fish tacos were "sabor", but I'd recommend Sabor only if you were in the area. However, if Oxnard is not your final destination, stay on the 101 and keep driving. As I'm sitting here enjoying my fish tacos I had to stop and write this down. These could possibly be the best fish tacos in the world! Haha it's something about the fish being cooked just right and the sauce that they smother on to the fish. It has sort of this tangy taste to it and I love dipping my tortilla chips in the leftover sauce after devouring the tacos. Tried the grilled shrimp taco and the fried fish taco today and these were some good tacos. To be honest the shrimp taco would get a 7.5 out of 10. The flavor was good and the taco was big but I just personally like my grilled shrimp a bit more charred as these weren't but that's ok, it was still a good taco. It seemed Mexican food was the way to go, so we chose this place based on good reviews on yelp. We all very much enjoyed our meal!
