The batter was light yet perfectly crispy, not overly heavy, and the fish itself was fresh, flaky, and high quality. Paired with a solid tartar sauce, this is a must order dish. The French fries were classic and I loved their coleslaw. Grilled Thresher Shark Plate: 4.5/5. This one was a standout for me given how hard it is to find shark on menus nowadays. I actually grew up eating shark, so this felt super nostalgic. The staff highly recommended it, and I'm so glad I listened. The grilled shark was mild, tender, and full of flavor thanks to their delicious balsamic glaze marinade. If you've ever been curious about trying shark, this is the place to do it. I ordered the two piece fish and chips which goes for $13.49. It was a plentiful portion, cooked nicely and served with a small side of cole slaw. I would have given this place four stars except for the fact that approximately half of one of my pieces of fish was exceptionally hard. From an appearance standpoint, it looked fine and it did not seem burned at all. However, the batter for some reason had hardened to the point that it was almost like a rock. Subbed the coleslaw out for potato salad, which is made in house and has a refreshing taste. The fish batter was light but crispy, and the fish itself was buttery smooth! The fries did their job and were very hot! All in all a delicious meal. Nice service too by the man at the register, who gave me a full list of options to sub out the coleslaw which allowed me to enjoy their potato salad. Plenty of indoor seating as well with some nice cartoon style paintings on the walls along with themed sea decor. I am indeed "hooked" after my first bite at Hook, Line & Sinker! This seafood place is great for what it is-- Kinda kitschy seafood dive. It's located in a strip mall with Smart and Final, casual seating that can host larger groups. This looks like the kind of place you'd see in major tourist boardwalk areas in Atlantic City or Florida coast. The ocean decor on the walls and ceiling is kitschy, and it feels like you're lost in time in the 80s. But the fried fish is great for my taste. They fry everything to order, so it will come out hot, crispy, and steamy. They use beer batter, and I think it is cod. It does taste like they under-season their fish, maybe on purpose b/c people load up on tartar sauce and vinegar? So that may not be to your taste, but the batter is so crisp and appealing. Their prices are affordable compared to other Fish and chips options, esp. in Ventura. They also have fresh high grade raw seafood available by the pound. read more

I had to use the sauce for the coconut shrimp to add flavor to it. The shrimp/fish combo - well, there's nothing special about the coconut shrimp but the fish was the bomb! Perfectly battered and fried. I also ordered clam chowder and it was good but the clams were a bit hard. Family owned place ! Near my house on a strip mall. Needed sushi grade fish for our poke bowls . Bought tuna and Salmon. So fresh and good ! Loved it ! Service was nice . Clean place . No nice views, so I am here more for there fresh fish . I would maybe try the prepped meals. They have great rating so sure it's good. For a bowl of chowder or fish and chips .. The fish and chips were yummy! The breading was light and cooked perfectly. Definitely coming back for the fish! The clam chowder was creamy and had a lot of vegetables (carrots, celery, and potatoes). I did taste a few pieces of clam in my cup. I'm still on the fence about getting it again. This review is only for the fresh seafood deli, I have eaten here before but honestly it is nothing to write about, the fish and chips as ok but nothing special. I appreciate that this place is so close to my house and whenever I want to eat fish, I like to buy it the day of to make sure it does not sit in my fridge too long. All of the fish I have ever bought here has always been fresh.. I mean as fresh as it can be I guess. The one time I had an issue with a bad piece of shark, I called them and they understood, pulled the fish from their deli and issued me a refund right away. The customer service they exhibited was above and beyond what I expected after calling and they even gave me a complimentary pound of a new fish of my selection for my next visit. The house fish and chips are made from basa fish and the texture is very mushy and soft, and the flavor was not for me - I would not order this again. The snapper fish and chips were delicious! The batter was perfectly fried and crispy without being hard. And the grilled mahi mahi sandwich was so balanced and perfectly cooked! This was easily my favorite. The two appetizers were ok. The other thing that stood out to me was their cocktail sauce, it actually had horseradish in it and was very good!! Service was friendly and quick. As we sat down to wait for our food, I couldn't help but notice they had a variety of sauces to enjoy as well as bottles of hand sanitizers at each table! We ordered the 3 piece fish and chips meal, popcorn shrimp, and shrimp and fish taco. The fish in the fish and chips meal was huge! Unfortunately, the fish was more battered than fish and lacked any distinct flavor. It had a nice crunch, but I found myself having to drown my tartar sauce on the fish just to make it slightly more palatable. The popcorn shrimp was the same. Not much flavor and it needed a lot of ketchup and tartar sauce. However, it also had a nice crunch. The tacos came with lettuce, tomato, and cheese. Not sure if there was any sauce already on the taco, but none that I could taste. It also lacked flavor, and I found myself having to use tartar sauce to make it more enjoyable to eat. I've had Fish and Chips at Andrias and Spencer McKenzies in Ventura, Otahnis in Oxnard and just about every other place that serves them and Hook, Line and Sinker excels in taste, service and especially price. The fish is great, cole slaw incredible but you cant beat the price. Eat here then if you eat anywhere else you're being ripped off because the other places charge more and they are not better. What a FUN place to eat! In a huge strip mall and would've never found without a yelp check and a waze guide, about 7 miles inwards from beachside. Got a good vibe upon entering as the interior is cool with a hanging shark, beach wall, TV, and comfy clean tables and booths. Was around 2pm on a Sunday plenty of room. The cashier was a friendly dude that patiently answered all our questions, and now it was time to order. Friend got the fish and chips...the fries could use some work (crispness) very pedestrian at best, the standard house fish for F+C is a farm-raised fish called "basa" from Vietnam I learned later on; could tell right away when offered a sample from buddy's dish that it wasn't "fishy" to the taste, I'm telling you sometimes I scare myself. Easy solution: order some other (wild) fish to substitute next time. The pieces are very long and batter extremely thick, which is where most the flavor is. Change the fish and its a solid plate. The clam chowder-yes they have the bread bowl too...was borderline heavenly. Slightly smoky, creamy and thick, good chunks of clams, exactly right. Got the smallest to have room for lunch mains, well kinda..had one fish taco on a flour tort, it was good. Also couldn't resist the ceviche tostada; these items were smaller so easily ate all 3 and liked the food. Wife ate the grilled mahi mahi it was smooth. Good place with a huge menu, will be back to try other things. Andria's F+C is better but its a fun place to eat and sick of the same place and thing so this will be a nice change of pace. I really miss this place. We lived in Oxnard for 26 years and we came to Hook, Line & Sinker regularly for the fish and chips. We would get the 8 piece family meal. Since moving away, I can't find anything anywhere near as good. Here, you get 2 small pieces of fish, about 1/4 the size of a H,L & S fillet. That with some fries and a tiny cole slaw is $15. Think about that. You buy two of those and you get the equivalent of one H,L&S fillet. And you have spent almost as much as the 8 piece family meal. You folks should enjoy this place and remember that you are getting a great deal compared to other places. I miss it a lot. read more

It was a few months ago when I went with my friend going here it was our first time we didn't know where to eat before heading on the road again. we were caught in a hurry to leave to Santa Barbara. I think this was the location in Oxnard my Hometown. It was a rainy day, so of course you know the sun wasn't out, but that was OK. The food was actually really good. The place was a little Old but still maintain. I think we ordered tacos and a bag of shrimp as well too. It's not the same like back home but it was still good. I wish I knew what I ordered.
