It's the kind of place so special you don't want to ruin it by writing a Yelp review that causes everyone to stop buying the cruddy fish they sell at grocery stores and come here instead, causing you to wait in a long line only to find out that they're sold out of that local sea bass that you love. Fortunately, practically no one reads my stupid reviews so that's not something I even have to worry about. So I'm gonna just go ahead and tell you about this this wonderful fish shop. LOL! First off, let's talk about quality. The fish here is as fresh as it gets. Like straight off the boat fresh. They sell lots of locally caught fish, but they also have fish from far away. But whatever you choose it's always hella fresh. High quality fish like this isn't exactly inexpensive. Depending on what you are buying, it can get a little pricey up in here. But considering the freshness of the fish, that's to be expected. To help you stick to your budget, every Tuesday Ocean Pride takes $2 off everything in the case. And there's more than fish in the case. They also offer shrimp (omg that shrimp is good!) and scallops (the big meaty kind), as well as clams and mussels. Next to the case they have a huge saltwater tank with live lobsters. When I was a little kid, I was scared to death of lobsters. I was afraid they'd pinch my toes. That's why I never owned a pair of sandals when I was growing up. Now lobsters are scared of me. They always cower like little bitches in the corner of the tank when I walk in the store. Yeah, you better hide! Ocean Pride has a very nice selection of grocery items you might need to prepare your fish, including Ponzu sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, unagi sushi sauce, mirin, tonkatsu sauce, furikake, sesame seeds, pickled ginger and even salad dressing. They also sell tempura batter mix, as well as tea. They sell medium grain rice, too. I always buy my rice here. If you have a dog, you can buy your pup some nice salmon skin treats here too. Woof! Now, on top off all this, the customer service here is top notch. If you don't know what kind of fish to buy, or how to cook your purchase, don't worry. The man behind the counter will help you out. Just ask! His advice never fails. Ocean Pride has a loyalty program for repeat customers. You get your card punched every time you visit. I can't tell you what you get when your card is complete because I am constantly losing my damn card. I mean, I have been a customer here for over ten years and I've never managed to hold on to a damn card long enough to find out what the reward is. Another sweet thing about this place is they have a weekly email newsletter. You definitely want to sign up for the newsletter! Every week they highlight a different fish and share a couple recipes for it. Oh yeah, I should point out that they offer curbside service if you need that. And with a minimum purchase, they deliver, too ($50 minimum order for Oxnard and Ventura residents, $100 min order for those that live in Ojai and Camarillo). When I found the place following my GPS, I honestly thought I was in the wrong place. Sandwiched between 2 industrial type businesses in an industrial area, far from any other retail stores, the double doors sported an "open" sign and a couple of bells on the door handle. Very modest, but an amazing variety of fresh fish. I confess I surreptitiously looked up their online reviews while the nice gentleman cut my swordfish steaks. It's a no frills shop that does nothing more than sell fresh fish.What's available? It depends on the season. A couple of months ago, I bought fresh shrimp; the kind they use at a sushi bar called Amaebi. It was so fresh, Tom pulled it out of the tank still alive. They also have lobster and crab( in a tank still alive) as well as every variety of shell fish. In addition to the shrimp, I purchased the most amazing giant scallops. I don't think a restaurant could have prepared a better meal that night. What's available depends on the season but over the years, I've purchased those types of items here and suddenly, I'm a master chef of seafood cuisine(according to my friends). They offer exotic fish including monk fish and wild caught king salmon to the mundane, snapper and yellow fin tuna. The prices are reasonable, considering what you're getting, the very freshest seafood possible (short of catching yourself). I got here a little early on a Friday, around 10:30 and knew they were closed but thought I would poke my head in. The place was being cleaned and guys were getting ready to open but one of the guys inside waved me in. I asked for some salmon for sushi and he quickly said king salmon is what you want. I ordered a little more than a pound for sushi that night. The suggestion for king salmon was a bit pricier than some of the other salmon but oh man was it delicious! I don't get the high praise here. The first thing I noticed was a fishy smell in the shop. But there were so many high reviews on Yelp, I decided to proceed. I used to get my fish from Santa Monica seafood and their shop always smells fresh. their clams are in the front display case, they select each clam, tap each on the counter to see if they are fresh, then put them in a mesh bag. I bought 2 pounds of fresh clams at Oceans Pride for that evenings dinner. He went in the back, threw them in a plastic bag, then came back out front to weigh them. I had to throw out about 1/3 of them because either they were dead, or had a sticky white gel in them when they finished cooking. Blecch.
