I've had Lure Fish House on my bucket list for a long time, so after spending the day at the Avocado Festival I headed over to Ventura. I parked at a public parking lot that was complimentary and the eatery was just a short walk. Opted to sit at the oyster bar since I wanted to catch the Dodger division series game. My waiter and bartender was friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. We started off with clam chowder, and warm sourdough bread. The chowder was rich in flavor and packed with clams. We followed with a seafood tower with of 3 types ceviche, whole shrimps, oysters and taro chips. The seafood was fresh and clean tasting. For the main entree I selected the catch of the day of sea bass served with cilantro rice, and slaw. The fish was flavorful, moist and perfectly seasoned. Lastly we enjoyed the key lime pie which was recommended by my waiter and his advise was spot on. What a wonderful dinner that's in a casual atmosphere. We tried this place based upon the great reviews and were not disappointed! We arrived with about 45 mins before closing, which always makes me wonder how we will be received and treated. David was our server and came up with all the normal high-level treatment one would expect from a fine dining place- yes, I'm aware this is not listed as fine dining. But it was absolutely presented and treated as such. He showed us around the menu and detailed all the top dishes. He had great recommendations, including an amazing blueberry basil margarita with fresh blueberries. For appetizers we tried the ceviche- tastes really fresh and had some spicy kick to it, and the mussels. Not my thing so I can't chime in on that but the sauce was really great asa dip for the bread. I had the Ono, which was SO delicious. I'd never had it sashimi style. The sauce it was served with complimented it perfectly. We sat on the patio and were very comfortable under the heaters. The furniture is very nice, comfortable, and the lighting is just right. When I went inside to use the restroom, I found the interior to be very nice as well. It's a welcoming vibe, modern and pleasing to the eye. Final verdict is that we all loved our meals, we received excellent service from David, and we felt that the value for the money was perfectly balanced. This location is in Downtown Ventura, just a short walk from the pier, and was a godsend after a miserable experience at a nearby restaurant where we were completely ignored. The Good: * Dog-friendly covered outdoor dining. * Great ambiance that is casual enough for a quick lunch but elegant enough for a hot date. * The complimentary warm sourdough is terrific; don't fear the carbs. * Local beers on tap, as well as locally fermented grapes. * I don't recall the server's name, but she was amazing and made us feel welcomed the entire time. * The clam chowder is easily one of my top five all-time favorites; just get it. * The ahi tuna was delicious and fresh. First of all - the best fish I've had in years! I had the Sand Dabs which I never heard of before this and the way they prepared it was on another level - very crispy on the outside, soft and flakey on the inside, well seasoned... just perfect. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of our server by the time I got to this review as I really wanted to give her props but she was amazing - great energy, very attentive, and the recommendations on point! Terrific! Visiting Ventura for a few days so stopped by here for lunch on a lowkey Monday afternoon. Not a single complaint to be had. The blueberry margarita and limoncello beverages were my two drinks of choice, recommended by our lovely waitress Bethany. I liked my drinks a little sweet and girly and both fit that vibe. Shared some oysters with the wife and some crab cakes, they all hit the spot and were solid appetizers to start with. I also got a cup of clam chowder before my main meal. One of the better clam chowders I've had to date. Nice and creamy, fresh and satisfying, it almost had me wishing I ordered a bowl instead. My wife tried mine too and had to order her own right after. The lobster roll with some fries was my main course. So good! The bun was lightly toasted and crisp and the lobster was just sweet and buttery without being too heavy. Very satisfying. And then finally I had to wrap things up with a dessert. Their strawberry basque cheesecake was the easy choice for me. This is the kind of dessert where everyone says they're just going to have a bite and suddenly half of it is gone. I'm glad I split it because I could have easily indulged and eaten the whole thing on my own if the temptation was there. And again, service was excellent. It wasn't particularly busy when we were there. The drinks came in a little slow because there was only one bartender and the bar was busy but otherwise, our waitress checked in on us a healthy amount of times to see if we needed anything or to refill our waters. Our first time at Lure Fish House, and we had a great experience from beginning to end. We walked in on a Friday night without reservations and put our name down for a table inside. The wait was about 20 minutes, which was no big deal for a busy Friday night. The host recommended grabbing a seat on the patio and enjoying happy hour while we waited, which ended up being a great recommendation. Katie approached us with a warm, welcoming smile. I mentioned that it was our first time, and she recommended the clam chowder, charbroiled oysters, and fish tacos. We also ordered the crab cakes, a hazy beer, and limoncello. We had just returned from a trip to San Francisco, so we had our share of clam chowder, but Lure's really stood out. The charbroiled oysters were also excellent. I highly recommend both. I ended up missing the text that our table was ready, and by the time I noticed, our reservation had been dropped. I went back to the host stand and explained that we had been enjoying ourselves on the patio. Instead of giving us an attitude or making it a problem, they happily put us back on the list and gave us a few minutes to close out. That kind of hospitality really took our date night to another level. Once inside, the atmosphere was lively and crowded, which was great to see. Joel was our server, and if management is reading this, Joel is an example of how five star hospitality should be done. I haven't received that level of service in a long time. Anytime we have guests out of town, we bring them here because we know the food is always gonna be good and fresh. We have been here no more times however they're happy hour is our favorite, even when we go during non-happy hour, we still order the items from the happy hour because they're just so good. Their bread is always so fresh. A must have from their menu is pop rock shrimp, oysters are always amazing. Their sliders is a new menu item and it is really good. We usually get two sliders with one fries. Clam chowder is also on their happy hour and it is amazing We have had so many dishes, including their salads, lobster, ravioli, tequila, lime, shrimp, sand is another favorite of mine One thing I wish they would change back is their spicy seafood ceviche, they used to have it better however they changed the recipe slightly. Lure in Ventura is such a little gem. We just moved to the area and we're looking for a place for a nice little happy hour. We decided on Lure and we're so happy we did. First and foremost, they are dog-friendly on the patio , so that's a HUGE plus for us! The staff is super friendly and solid with their service. Great happy hour menu with some amazing choices. The crab cakes are fantastic. It has a sauce and corn relish that is so flavorful and makes the dish;The pop rock shrimp is really good with its spicy and sweet flavor; the calamari is tender and spicy and the fish tacos are large and so tasty. My husband and I came on a Saturday and was quoted 35 minutes for a wait. I recommend going to the bar like us if you want to skip it. Sally's sand dab - 5/5. My go-to for a reason. It's lightly breaded with capers and a nice garlic and Parmesan sauce. It's not too heavy and is always so tasty. I got it with the pineapple coleslaw and butternut squash. I would probably sub the butternut squash with fries or another side next time. Charbroiled oysters - 5/5. I didn't get it this time, but these are a must have and my favorite. My usual location is the Santa Barbara one but I was closer to the Ventura location so I decided to give it a try to see if the flavors were consistent between the locations. Spoiler alert: the flavors were consistent! I ordered the Baja Kanpachi which came with two sides. I chose the sweet potato fries and the cilantro corn salad. The Kanpachi tasted fresh, buttery and was well seasoned. The sweet potato fries were fresh and sweet and didn't taste like it was from a bag of frozen fries. The cilantro corn salad also tasted very fresh and paired nicely with the Kanpachi. Service was decent. This location has less seating than the one in Santa Barbara and is much smaller. This location is situated nearby quaint retail stores and more. There are plenty of free parking lots nearby. We ordered the fish and chips and a salad listed as a Fall Harvest Salad with the ingredients listed as such, Chili dusted butternut squash, goat cheese, beets, quinoa, kale, pepitas, maple vinaigrette. Seeing as the kale is listed late in the list we expected it to be more butternut squash and beets. However it was a huge kale salad with some of the other ingredients added.
