Viet Ice Coffee: bold with hints of sweetness. Really good!

@fortunefoodfinds: "The past week was surely filled with a LATTE L.O.V.E. n' plen-TEA to eat + drink! A Fruity Pebbles Ice Matcha Latte, Glitter Lychee Dragon Tea, n' a Viet Ice Coffee that were all yuMmmy n' tasted great from SAAP SAAP HI. Now I need to give their food a try!" SERVICE: friendly n' accommodating INTERIOR: n/a EXTERIOR: You can find them at various events all across da island. On this visit they were a vendor at the Village Night Market that takes place on Saturdays. WAIT TIME: 5-10 mins PARKING: Pearlridge Sears lot OVERALL COMMENTS: the fruity pebbles ice matcha latte was true to its name. You can definitely taste the fruity pebbles yet it wasn't overly sweet, which was good. Wish the matcha shined through a bit more, but still a fun n' tasty latte. The lychee dragon tea was so refreshing n' full on tropical flavor. Enjoyed every sip n' the glitter also made it fun. The Viet ice coffee was really good, bold with hints of sweetness. I liked how each drink was different n' delicious!

Coconut Chicken Curry + Lemon Grass Chicken Combo Plate

I've been eyeing this spot for a while. They go to various locations but they seem to be consistently at UH Manoa on Monday and Wednesday mornings. I would recommend checking out their Instagram for their weekly schedule. I saw them when I was at the village night market at Pearlridge, the one every Saturday night. I ordered the combo plat with lemongrass fried chicken and chicken curry. My friend was the one who wanted the chicken curry so he seemed to enjoy it. It was alright to me, the chicken pieces were tender and the curry was loose & creamy, not strong in taste or spicy, reminds me of any other thai chicken coconut curry. The lemon grass chicken was fire, it was crispy and flavorful. They were small wings though, but each bite was packed with flavor, and the chili sauce was a must have combo with the wings. I also really liked the salad and the dressing it was very good. My friend ate most of the rice with the curry so I don't really have a comment about that. I would definitely recommend saap saap, and I am planning on trying their lao sausage the next chance I have.

What a bonus, happen to be at the family fair event, Bishop Museum which was put on by Hawaii USA FCU, this event also included a bento. After enjoying our bento dinner, I walked around looking for some desserts at the food truck and came across Saap Saap's HI food truck. I was already stuffed but ended up trying the mini bowl of purple rice & sausage bowl ($7.), OMG... Wow, the flavors was Saap Saap! & more stuffed, didn't make it to desserts. Not knowing anything about the business, while at the event I searched Yelp page and read some reviews and photos, bookmarked, follow the Saap Saap's Instagram page for their schedule, I kept trying to attend one of the pop ups but didn't work out until finally it happened! On Friday, 7/25. They were at the Calvary Chapel Food & Craft Fair, out in Aiea. It was so worth the drive! After walking around, I head straight to Saap Saap, I also got there early as I was worried they might sell out (yes. that good!) I really wanted more Lao sausage and purple butterfly pea rice, I got the combination plate with upgrade to papaya salad for $2. more. The plate is steep, comes out to $27. (taxes and upgrade) but it is so yummy & worth it, I treated myself, for such a long work week! Excited I finally got Saap Saap food again, I loved my plate, the flavors of the sausage, purple rice, Lao Fried chicken and papaya salad. I could just taste the freshness, spices, the flavors, it was a major flavor explosion, while enjoying my plate. My very first time trying the butterfly pea rice and wow, I loved it , cooked perfectly & so fragrant! Happy I had some leftovers which, I made a salad and added the sausage & papaya salad to it. For my future visits, I want to try the rest of the items Saap Saap has to offer, curry and the braised pork with egg & also the drinks are so colorful in the cute bucket. I look forward to more visits to this amazing food truck! Please support & follow Saap Saap HI on Instagram for the schedule, I hope they open a shop soon. The couple who runs this business are the nicest couple ever! I am going to be that person- your true loyal customer

It's hard to find good Laotian food. So when I saw this food truck had at a night market I had to try it. Kinda bummed they were sold out of the Lao fried chicken. I got the red chicken curry and Lao sausage plate with an upgrade to papaya salad. Food came out pretty quickly and portion size is pretty good. I love the papaya salad. So flavorful but it does pack heat. The spice level reminded me of my besties papaya salad. If they had papaya salad as a side order, I would have bought more to take home with me. Red curry packed the heat as well. Loved that they had mushrooms in the curry. If I ever come across them I hope they have the fried chicken .

After strolling through the Mari Garden Summer Fair, searching for something to eat, my eyes caught sight of the bright blue butterfly Jasmine rice from Saap Saap HI's food truck. "Saap Saap" is a Lao phrase that means "very delicious." And everything on the menu seemed like it would be exactly that. I ordered the combo plate with the Signature Lao Sausage and Braised Pork ($23), upgraded to get Papaya salad ($2) and got a Viet Iced Coffee ($8). The highlight of the plate was the Lao sausage. Juicy and flavorful! I would definitely order it again. The coffee was also delicious. Very strong and sweet! Overall, a great choice if you're looking for authentic Lao food on the island.

Saap Saap! Meaning Delicious/Tasty in Lao. Come by for the best Lao Sausage I've had on island. You can choose mild or hot. All food comes in plate style with the pretty blue butterfly pea rice, salad (or papaya salad $2), and crispy spring roll. We chose the Lao Sausage and Lao Fried Chicken combo for $25. Everything was seasoned perfect with explosions of flavor in every bite. They also sell buckets of various drinks that I have to try next time! Laotian food truck that goes around the island (follow on IG for schedule). We tried them at the Saturday night Pearlridge farmers market. Friendly staff! Highly recommend!

True flavors of Laos. So good in fact that I haven't had anything this aromatic and explosive in flavor except at a Laos friend's home. Outstanding Sai Oua (Lao sausage). Purchased raw (vacuum sealed package; 5/$20), grilled over charcoal on one occasion and broiled on another. Extremely juicy. Excellent balance of coarse ground pork and pork fat and starchy sticky rice. Aromatic AF! Loaded with lemongrass, galangal, lime leaves, sweet shallots amongst other things with just the right umami kick of fish sauce. Great use of fresh chilies to ratchet up the heat. Beyond anything I've had in a brick and mortar eatery. Other less traditional dishes also burst with the classic Laos flavors. The well made spring rolls once again with a good fish sauce umami kick and aromatics. The dipping sauce that comes with bursts with fresh chili flavor and heat. A creative crawfish curry with eggplant and bell peppers with a side of Gram worthy but basic butterfly pea colored rice and a side of papaya salad compliments all the Lao flavors well. The owner / chef is friendly and personable. Follow on IG for popup locations. Flavors so explosive with great authenticity, they are worth seeking out.

I saw this plate at a Bishop Museum event but already ate dinner, so i checked their schedule and found them at another event in Aiea. Totally worth it! Food and drinks are delicious! You can't go wrong.

It came with three sides so I got cole slaw, potato salad, and Mac and cheese. Cole slaw and Mac and cheese were solid; Potato salad was just alright. They also gave one warm bun too. The reason I gave 3 stars was because service was extremely slow. It seemed like they were short staff and had one person at the cash register AND getting the food. He would take a few orders, and then grab the food. When I arrived, he was grabbing food for multiple folks so then I stood there waiting like 15 just to place my order. Then when he restarted and took my order, he took like 5 more orders before grabbing the food so then I waited even longer for another 15 min. That's 30 min of waiting! Also he wasn't serving food in the order that orders were received so it felt actually felt even longer. There needs to be a better system! Surprisingly he did a employee discount on my order. Not sure if it's because it was close to closing time. Btw they charge extra if you order to-go because of the supplies for packaging. It was love at first bite for me with musubi and onigiri, so when I saw a spot dedicated to this deliciousness you better believe I made a point to go there! I ran even faster when StaciLei, Yelp Hawaii's amazing Community Manager, told me it's a must and gave me her list of greatest hits and must not miss items as a guide! Now I've had a lot of these in my life, and I must say, Iyasume are easily the best. See musubi and onigiri have humble origins as a quickly made homespun snack or on the go lunch, and when you spot them in the convenience environment they're often a giant ball of rice with a tinge of protein or seasoning for flavor. At Iyasume, these are culinary adventures, stacked with ingredients, all in handheld form, and the variety they offer is IMPRESSIVE! Of course musubi starts with the classic, SPAM. I had to order the kimchi + spam, shiso + spam, and unagi + tamago + spam, all of which were awesome (even the next day!). Onigiri here are actually layered with ingredients, so you get them in every bite, unlike the convenience store versions! However, after having to abandon our original dinner plans, we were no less intrigued after randomly stumbling across this place. While they may not have been our first choice for dinner, coming here was far more appealing than eating fast food or at the nearby IHOP! Although seeing so many folks at this mini food truck park may have been what caught our attention, it was the boxes of fried chicken on nearly every table that swayed us to try Waikiki Chicken in Paradise in particular. After skimming the menu, it wasn't hard to see why they were such a popular choice - everything on it sounded great. Granted, that's not overly difficult when there are only eight items to choose from, but tough to argue with the likes of fried chicken loco moco, fried chicken curry rice, fried chicken sandwiches, chicken & croffle, and fish & chips! Since we saw how big the portion were and didn't want anything too heavy (read: sadly, no loco moco or Japanese curry), we opted to split a FRIED CHICKEN RICE PLATE ($16.95) which came with a Fried Chicken Cutlet over White Rice with Mac Salad & Green Salad. Funny enough, despite already having a sense of how much food they give, I was still surprised by the generous portion size. As for how it all tasted, this was great. The breading on the chicken reminded me of Popeye's (though, without the spice), the batter was crispy, and the chicken itself was rather moist. As for the sides, the mac salad was pretty good, but the salad was a little heavy on dressing. If there was one thing I could change about our order, I think I'd want to see how it would taste with a sauce or glaze. At the very least, I'd definitely go with a different dipping sauce, like their Pineapple Ginger, Lilikoi Mayo, or Guava BBQ, as the Honey Mustard we went with tasted a bit generic. Of course, we could've solved both problems if we had gone with the Fried Chicken Loco Moco or Fried Chicken Curry Rice instead! I guess I'll just have to wait until the next time I'm in Waikiki!
