I ordered their haupia iced coffee and a chocolate almond croissant. The coffee was okay but sadly not worth $8. I expected the croissant to have filling but it only had a chocolate glaze on top. It tasted great despite no filling but didn't have much chocolate flavor. The glaze was more sugary like a krispy Kreme glaze coat rather than a chocolate coating. This spot was lovely! They opened at 6 AM. I arrived at 6:30 AM and there were already two other parties waiting for the 7 AM breakfast start. Staff were super nice and on top of everything. I loved that the atmosphere engenders a community spirit so strangers were chatting each other up throughout the whole visit. A line formed at the door right as breakfast was about to start, so this place is popular. And the crowd was a rich mix of locals on their way to work and tourists. We discovered Sunny's Local Grind while on vacation in Waikiki, and we're so glad we did! It's an easy walk from the Hilton Hawaiian Village, making it the perfect spot for breakfast before heading out for the day. We ordered the loco moco and the brekkie burrito, and both were absolutely delicious. The loco moco was outstanding--the gravy was rich, flavorful, and they gave a generous amount, so every bite was perfect. The brekkie burrito was packed with fresh vegetables, lots of ham, and was incredibly fresh and satisfying. Everything tasted homemade, fresh, and full of flavor. The friendly atmosphere and excellent food made this one of our favorite breakfast stops during our trip to Oahu. Sunny's Local Grind in Honolulu was very satisfying overall. The kimchi fried rice was flavorful and the portion was perfect. Very filling and satisfying without feeling too heavy. The steak sammie was really good. It almost complements a Philly cheesesteak in how the steak was cut and prepared, with peppers and cheese, but it definitely stood out on its own. The steak was cooked perfectly and the bread was soft and buttery, which made the whole sandwich come together really well. The banana bread latte the first time we had it was just okay, but on our second visit it was very good and had a great balance of all the flavors. The matcha was just okay. I sweetened it with vanilla, and only after swirling the drink did the vanilla come through--and even then, only temporarily--before it went back to tasting like flavorless green milk. Overall, the food is solid, filling, and satisfying. I'd definitely come back for the kimchi fried rice and steak sammie, but I'd skip the matcha next time. read more

Went there for lunch on a Saturday. Awesome time, as there was no line and lots of seats. But also no biscuits and gravy. Fairly easy to find street parking. I could see how this place would be super busy in the morning, as the inside only seats about 8-10 people, while outside maybe 20 but you brave the weather and birds. Great service. Tried their garden omelet with wheat toast, breakfast burrito with Portuguese sausage, hot latte, and freshly squeezed lemonade. Im glad their food is not salty, but then it does need ketchup or something. The omelet and burrito tasted like what we'd make at home. Very comforting. This is a tiny little place off the beaten path in Waikiki. It's well known with the locals but you can find tourists there as well. It only seats maybe 10 people, but they deliver to a local bar down the road (Suzi Wong's...equally off the beaten path). The food at Sunny's is excellent. Amazing, delicious, quick, friendly. We walked up to Aloha Cafe from our hotel to find it was fully packed with a line out the door waiting to be seated. We walked 350 feet further and found Sunny's Local Grind where we were able to walk right up and order! They have an amazing looking assortment of pastries, a solid menu, and legit coffee! Food trucks are right across the street, but I decided to come to this place based on the Ube coffee and the Loco Moco. It was worth the wait as I needed the Loco Moco to satisfy my savory craving and the Ube to satisfy my sweet tooth. Just know the place is packed it the morning and there is limited seat inside. Tried out a local favorite, breakfast spot. What a winner! A cozier spot, off the Main Street, with fantastic service. As we walked up, we could tell there was already a sense-of-community with this place. Everyone was very friendly, the restaurant itself was clean, bright, and there were patrons that were quite obviously regulars of this establishment. You order at the front register and take a seat, if any are available. Thankfully we got to sit inside, enjoy our food, and watch the interactions of people coming and going. I ordered the Trashcan Scramble, which is a bit more on the traditional side of breakfasts, but it was so worth it. ABSOLUTELY delicious. To top it off, I ordered the Mauna Loa Mocha, which is one of eight barista concoctions they are testing out. The MLM was seductively sweet and has my vote right from the jump. But if I had time to try out some of the others, I would go for either the Banana Bread Latte, or the Ube Cookie Crumble. A slight trek from central Waikiki, this little patio cafe is worth it. They serve such a wide variety of breakfast stables and they do it well. It is pretty small and I wish it had more indoor seating especially on a hot day like when I went but there is a fair amount of covered outdoor bench seating and two very small outdoor tables. They leave the door open to the cafe and what fan they do have doesn't fully cover the tables inside so it's hard to escape the heat. The sunrise tea is very tart and the banana bread latte was pretty weak flavor wise (tasted nothing like banana bread) but the coffee itself was strong. My mom enjoyed her avocado toast although $11 is a little steep for 1 slice of toast. Grandpa found this spot, and what a wonderful breakfast. They are a cute little breakfast, lunch, and drink shop (coffees, teas, etc. The order: Daddy: Sunny's (wagyu hamburger) Loco Moco with fried rice. What a delight, their gravy is on point and just how a like it. For most , they may say it's a tad or maybe too salty, but I love it haha. The fried rice had a nice garlic kick, the burger was a nice mid-well with a tad of pink like I want it, (Although had they not stated wagyu, I would have thought it was a normal burger), and a runny yolk egg to add some lusciousness for the gravy. Mommy: Caprese Sammie with a side of avocado. Mommy's always the healthy one :-). She loved it and the addition of pesto was a welcomed addition. Grandpa: Brisket Loco Moco with a side of Bacon. He enjoyed it but thought the smokiness over powered the meat just a bit. Son son: Veggie fried rice with a side of bacon and some of daddy's hamburger. He loved his bacon and breakfast. My husband and I absolutely loved this breakfast spot during our trip to Hawaii; we liked it so much that we came back with his parents later during our trip, even though it was a bit of a walk from our hotel. Sunny's is clearly a local favorite. When it opened at 7 am, the line was already wrapped around the block. Thankfully, we beat the rush on our first visit and only waited about 15 minutes the second time. Don't let the line scare you off because it is absolutely worth the wait! The restaurant is super cute and very small, with only a few tables inside and out. The first time we snagged a spot indoors, but on our second visit, it was packed, so I grabbed an outdoor table while the rest of our group went in to order because otherwise we wouldn't have had anywhere to sit. Both times, I ordered the Biscuits and Gravy with Italian Sausage ($12), and it was honestly the best I've ever had. I couldn't stop raving about it. The gravy was rich and creamy, and the biscuits had the perfect texture. My husband got the Sunny's Omelet ($13) with bacon, cheese, peppers, and onions and loved it. It also came with a side of white rice. He also ordered a side of Spam each time! The ingredients are all fresh, and everything is made to order. In addition, as amazing as the food is, I still dream about their coffee. I will literally never forget it because it was so refreshing and like nothing I have ever had before. Both visits, I ordered the Haupia Macchiato ($8), which uses white chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, coconut syrup, and coconut milk. If there is one thing I learned in Hawaii, it's that coffee there is pretty expensive, but when it's as unforgettable as this one was at Sunny's, $8 is NOTHING! The service was always warm and friendly. After you order, the staff brings your food to you, whether you are sitting inside or outside, which we really appreciated. We ordered the ube and haupia latte which she said were the 2 most popular drinks. The haupia was delicious and flavorful but I would've liked a little more of the syrup as once it all mixed together it lost some of the haupia flavor but was still good. I like my coffees pretty sweet. The ube latte was a little more mild in flavor and not as sweet as the haupia but still yummy! Only a few tables for dining and tight space inside. This place stays very busy. There is alwasy a line. We wanted to check it out for a local dish that they serve called a loco moco. Although the line was long it moved at a steady pace. The staff was pleasant. There is no like "service" for the tables you order then you seat yourself (if there is room) but they do bring out your food if you find a seat b/c it's so small inside not everyone can wait in there. We both ordered the beef Loco Moco. It comes with the egg sunny up but I asked for it to be over med with yole still runny, only b/c when I saw someone else's the white part of the egg around the yoke looked undone. And they said they would try to accommodate that request. We sat outside in a patio area that they have. Now mind you this place in tiny. Only one area to sit inside that may sit like 4 sets of 2 ppl or a group of 4 and 2 couples. But if you're not there early that is gone or you have to wait. Outside is about the same maybe a tiny bit bigger. May seat a total of 10 couples. We did get a seat outside which was great and there were 3 of us. With enough room for about 4 more ppl at our table. The tables were picnic style that you would see at the park only one side was bench like. The food was really good it was my first time having it. Loco Moco is just rice with black beans and a meat and egg on top. Doesn't look like anything I would order, but my coworker said it is very good and it really was. It was not anything I ever thought to eat all together, but glad I tried it. The only think I didn't like is that there were 3 of us and we all ordered right behind each other, but my food came out so late. My coworker was almost done by time I got my food. The server stated it was b/c an online order came in, but I think that it unfair to the ppl who are physically there waiting on their food that they push the order to the side to fill the online order. There should be a separate service for online orders and not cut off the ppl who have ordered already and are actually waiting for their food. It should at least be taken after the last in person order was put through not cut in fro t of an order that has already be placed. The food and drinks came out really fast and great quality. We tried out the iced black tea and mango peach tea. If you get the mango peach tea, I recommend just mixing it well cause otherwise it's really sweet. I recommend the Avocado toast because it was fresh and flavorful - I loved how I could taste the hints of lemon and seasoning. First morning wondering around Waikīkī we stumbled across Sunny's Local Grind. A little gem that has the nicest waitresses. They were all so thoughtful and caring. We ordered more of the lunch time options, like fish and chips, a caprese sandwich and buffalo wings. Everything was solid. The fish and chips weren't too greasy and the fish had a crispy thin batter. The wings had a crispy crust and a juicy interior. The caprese sandwich was fresh with a warm crusty bread. The tartar sauce and ranch dressing were next level delicious. You can see and taste the extra herbs and seasoning in the sauces. My family really enjoyed this cute little restaurant. Great prices, awesome service and amazing food. You gotta try this spot. read more

Pay by QR. Service was fast but they did mess up a few orders ahead of us and messed up ours too. We had to wait awhile for them to remake it. We got: -vegan hash (not recommended) -chickpea scramble (not recommended) -shrimp fried rice (decent) -sunrise tea (nothing crazy good) All items tasted OK and fills the stomach. Portion is OK but the price is a bit higher for the simplicity of the meal. They did give us some Tabasco that helped add flavor to everything. I probably wouldn't make the trip to try it again but I'm glad that they have so many vegan and vegetarian options.
