Ukrainian Borscht

We loved this restaurant! Great food, borscht with pampushka was my favorite We also ordered meat holybtsi and assortment of varenyki - everything came out delicious. The customer service was great as well. Everyone was very friendly. We will be back

Outstanding food and outstanding service! And all in a cute and nice space. The menus are limited in the sense there are only a few offerings. But all those offerings are delicious. Challenge yourself and try some new things. Can't say enough about how lovely the staff are. We had a truly wonderful brunch experience here.

We made a reservation for early lunch. Early is the time to go! We practically had the place to ourselves and were delighted to see others heading in as we heading out. Our meal was great. Fish and chips ruled the day. Dessert was as tasty as the presentation looks. This place is a gem. The place is well appointed and exudes a nice style.

Eastern European food is usually a miss for me, but Ruta came through! The Varenyky was absolutely fantastic and full of fresh ingredients. The Pickled Herring on rye bread was also decent and the best I've had in the states so far. Our server was attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere was lively yet quiet enough for easy conversation.

This was my first time trying Ukrainian cuisine. It was very tasty! We shared a couple of things from the brunch menu and they were all excellent. The bartender was friendly and made some recommendations for classic Ukrainian drinks and they were lovely. We took home a piece of honey cake for later and it was very good! The place was clean, the food was great and the service was friendly and efficient!

I was very happy to find this restaurant. 1. Reservation: A must! This establishment is small (see picture) and you want to make sure you have one by reserving by calling them or through their own website only. Opentable, resy, yelp etc all do NOT work! 2. Food: 4.5 /5 Borscht: very good, delicious, has lots of beef Vareniki: I was not fond of it, It had this animal fat taste, which I really could not get over. Normally this is my favorite food, but not in this restaurant Beef tongue: It is wrapped in a crepe (blini) and very small amount. I assumed it would be like all other russian places: slices beef tongue. It wasn't. tasted good but hardly any. Luckily the blini is good 3. Drinks: 4/5 Strong! They use Ukrainian vodka as base and it is quite unique. The one I had jam in it and do not recommend. It is like you dropped your jam by mistake and does not go well. I drank it anyway Martini: good 4. Service: 4/5 we were seated at the bar after waiting for 20 mins although there were enough tables empty. This made no sense to me. Bartender was our server in a sense that he took our order. Can't really speak of service considering there was no specific waiter going back and forth. I still like this place and like the fact that we have a different cuisine we can try and adding variety to the DC food scene.

We decided to do our own neighbourhood food crawl around eastern market and found this place while exploring the area. It was my first time trying Ukrainian food and I enjoyed it! We got the varenyky dumpling sampler (favorite was the chicken) and the holubtsi (cabbage rolls stuffed with meat).

Three strikes in just one month -- and I'm officially done with Ruta. First visit: my steak was completely overcooked. Not medium, not medium-well -- just dry and rubbery. Second time: the manager personally promised to send me the catering menu for my housewarming party. I was ready to give them real business -- but they never followed through. No email, no call, nothing. And today? They brought out a dessert by literally tossing a small plate into a bigger one like it was cafeteria service. No care, no presentation, no pride. Three failures in one month -- that says a lot about how much they value their customers. You better start taking your customer service seriously and learn to appreciate loyal clients with the respect they deserve. Because right now? It's not just disappointing -- it's embarrassing.

Amazing. I loved coming to Ruta. It's a smaller sized restaurant but the menu and vibes were immaculate. The food was so good and filling, while being presented so well. Our waitress was very kind and gave us such great recommendations. I would definitely recommend the pierogis and dessert!! The cake was so so good and the cherry strudel was one of the best desserts I've had this year.

Ukrainian Burrata Beet salad

This is my favorite Ukrainian restaurant in D.C.! Everything we tried was delicious, but the Ukrainian Burrata Salad was my fav... it was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. I'm currently obsessed with beets and theirs were absolutely perfect. Our server, Anastasia, was wonderful and so attentive, and I loved how authentic the atmosphere felt. It seemed like the entire staff was Ukrainian, which made the experience even more special. It's also in the cutest area to walk around and on weekends for Eastern Market.

Marci F.

I really like the place and the customer service was great. It's very homey and great food for a cold night. I do think the prices are a little bit on the high side for the portions, but that might be just Washington DC. it is a small restaurant so I recommend reservations.

Meat holubtsi
Gregory T.

Anastasia provided highly professional service, the ambiance was intimate but casual, and the food was outstanding! Delicious beef tartar and meat holubtsi (cabbage roll). The sauces were unique and tasty. Since it was anniversary, we shared a piece of honey cake (it was enough for two). I don't like cake...until I tried this honey cake. Loved it.

Syrnyky

This place is fabulous! It was too hot to be on the patio so we sat inside, but once we cooled down I kind of wished we were outside with the puppies and people watching! We came for brunch on a Saturday and it was busy but not packed. The service was great and the food was amazing and presented so well. I would definitely come back for brunch but really want to come for lunch or dinner now!

Ruta Ukrainian Restaurant…read more What a lovely introduction to Ukrainian food. We began with their appetizers and it was uphill all the way. Not only is their food prepared to delight but each dish was visually appealing that elevated our whole experience. I would recommend arriving for an early dinner and making reservations. There is metered parking on the road or paid parking structures not too far away. The restaurant is cozy with a welcoming atmosphere. Well appointed tables and an important part...comfortable chairs. Splashes of color and decor reminded us of their proud Ukrainian heritage. Service from the staff was well coordinated, friendly and never intrusive. I felt I was being fed a family's long standing recipes of traditional specialties. The condiments, creamed sauces or microgreenery complimented each individual dish. Even a simple dinner roll was elavated by its absorption of garlic oils and a house made spread. We tried the Varenyky dumplings with sauerkraut filling and one with short ribs. The Deruny (potato pancakes) were delicious layered with sour cream and a portion of a tasty mushroom mixture. Some items are marked gluten free or vegetarian. Our main entrees were Banosh with pieces of bacon, goat cheese with a polenta cake, the other Banosh Vegetarian also came with a Ukrainian polenta cake, a Mushroom Mixture and goat cheese. My daughter tried the Chicken Kyiv with mashed potatoes which was also very delicious. This memorable meals was complete with their award winning honey cake, moist layers of cake and creamed filling that is now one of my favorite desserts. Not overly sweet and large enough to share with the 3 of us. My only regret is that they are located in Bethesda, if a store opened in Columbia, I would gladly become a regular. I'll just need to make a special trip here again to try more of their selections. Highly recommended for all age.

When we walked in, we thought it was gonna be packed because there were no reservations on OpenTable however they were able to see us right away. A very nice touch to add a stem of Rose for the women. I would say that I gave it a lower star rating not because the food was bad. It was actually delicious, but probably the experience itself. The restaurant felt chaotic, and even though all the tables were not completely packed of course there were flowers everywhere people gathering with grandmother's mother's children, etc We were seated in a two people table and all the top past dishes started to pile up very quickly. Instead of monitoring, the progress of the finished dishes and removing those dishes due to space constraint, the dishes came from the kitchen, almost on top of one another, and at one point I had to hold a dish in my hand in order to make space to put a dish on top of another flatbread pan/dish, making things super chaotic. Also dishes had to be put on top of the menu because in order to order additional food, you need to leave at least one copy of the menu at the table. Overall, again the flavors and taste were good, though I might have had similar dishes from other places, and my partner commented that some of it is actually very close to the Capital One landing at DCA. I would just say that it was more due to the chaos and just the way that all the dishes piled up on top of us we felt like we were we had to eat super quickly so that we could stack dishes ourselves and create room at the table. Also, when serving the dishes were not kept level and basically was slide to the side of the dish, making presentation off

I've been seeing some Eastern European mukbangs on Instagram and thought the food looked good. I'm all for new cultural experiences. So I found this place on Yelp and thought I'd give Russian food another try. I knew Russian food is simple and clean, and I knew the backstory to the Borsch dish. That's all I really knew lol... when I tell you the flavors shocked me! It was so delicious and flavorful. And yes, the meat tasted high quality and clean as expected. I ordered to-go (Manti and Borsch), and my food was smelling so good in the car. I was nervous about the Borsch. I like beets but not that much. So when I took a sip of the soup, it was tangy and very delicious. I'm so glad I got it and didn't chicken out. It tasted like a good beef soup with a slight beet and tangy taste. Perfect and filling! I will definitely be getting it again. The Manti was also very delicious. At first it didn't seem like a lot, but it's packed with meat. I was stuffed for 4 hours straight. I believe it had parsley, dill, onion, and fennel, but I am unsure of what herbs are native in Eastern Europe and Russia. They also have a mini market full of Russian foods and snacks. I think I saw pickled herring in the fridge which I will go back to buy. I see people eating it online and I want to try it myself. I will definitely be coming back here and may bring my friends. The prices are high, but the meat quality and taste are worth it for me. I may go again tomorrow lol. The space also looked very nice and was clean. Give this place a try! You won't regret it! To my luck, we had great Uzbek food less than 15 mins away! It was a while ago but we ordered the samsa, manti, kutabi, plov, and chohohbli, and I can't recall what else but we loved it! Last night my husband and I decided to dine in. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with cultural artifacts and art. This may just be a me thing but the serveware was envy worthy. It was gorgeous. I'm obsessed with beautiful dishware. There were only two people taking orders and serving food for an almost full dining room so we were understanding of a bit of a wait time. The staff were very friendly and checked in on us when they could. We ordered the khachipuri, samsa, oxtail, chohobli, steamed rice, pilmeni, and hot tea. Both the khachipuri and samsa were flaky pastries: khachapuri filled with a salty stretchy cheese with a cheese pull that tasted better than it was Instagram-able and samsa filled with a savory meat/onion mixture served with a tomato based sauce. Get one per person because you will not want to share. We ordered fried mini dumplings which are filled with meat and also served with same tomato based sauce that came with the samsa. They were delicious but afterwards I saw that you can get them steamed in a broth, I told myself I have to get that next time. The slow-cooked, tender oxtail was served over the best crispy, fat-fried potatoes I've ever had. The chohobli (chicken stew) was fall off the bone into a delicious tomato-based stew. We ordered the rice to sop up the delicious stew. The tea really helped to cut the richness of all the delicious food. I have not shut up about this place since we had this meal. I will rave about it to just about anyone that will listen in hopes that they will come with me next time so we can order more dishes to share.

Unfortunately it never came back in our area. We stalked and studied its location pattern for months. Finally this past Wednesday, it came back! My husband and I each ordered the two blintzes (one meat and one chicken) with borsch special $11 - we thought about sharing but let's be honest, no. The owner was extremely friendly and even threw in a complimentary kale salad for us in celebration of their 1 yr anniversary! I loved their crepe skin! it's a bit fluffier, thicker, and sweeter than French or Japanese version. In fact, a little closer to American pancake consistency. Meat version - overstuffed with delicious mixture of rice, ground meat, and veggie bits. Reminded me of the stuffed cabbage center in Eastern European cuisine! The spicy marinara sauce paired so well. Wished I ordered two of these! Chicken version - similar to (canned) chicken salad. It lacked the cheesiness and creaminess it advertised. The mushroom sauce did help but it was too runny. Flavor was fine but meat version was just 10x better. Borsch and kale salad - both were refreshing, tasty side options. Choose depending on your mood for the perfect pairing. Overall - meat blintzes all day every day (I do have a troubling obsession with everything crepes). Hope the truck makes another round back in my area soon.
