Nickel and dime dinner. We booked for a group of 13 people and they required us to show up in advance to fill out a contract. I guess we should've read it closely, there was a 3% admin fee ($15) and a $40 minimum fee because two in our party did not show up. This was a line item on the bill, and not the traditional "two drink minimum" kind of thing. Ending with just under a $700 tab, (their 15% gratuity built-in) one would expect they'd happy with that. Following a mediocre first experience a number of years ago, I wasn't particularly keen to try Rusty Scupper again, not tempted even by its superb Inner Harbor views. The restaurant rose higher on my list of places to eat, however, once we discovered that it offered an extensive, high in food variety, unique brunch buffet extravaganza. Sunday brunch is served in style with beautiful scenery and live jazz music, both being a nice touch for the wow! factor and perfect to spice up special events or Mother's Day. Aside from featuring complimentary bottomless mimosas (or champagne or bloody Mary's or bellinis; other drinks available for extra), Rusty Scupper's buffet offers mountains of shrimp and mussels, platters of raw oysters, a tropical paradise of fruit, numerous baked goods (bagels, muffins, donuts, cookies), as well as many types of meats, cheeses, smoked salmon, salads, noodle combos, and meat dishes. To add to all these options, a few chefs stand around a set of portable stoves in the main area and cook to order eggs and omlettes stuffed--if you wish--with any of a diverse array of veggies, meats, and/or cheeses. You can also get slices of ham, turkey, or beef carved to order from towering if naturally uneven meat spheres. As if one could possibly leave this place hungry, next to this is another stand where fresh Belgian waffles are prepped and served with a variety of toppings. There is, of course, also a separate dessert area featuring the usual suspects but the highlight of which is an endless delight of large chocolate covered strawberries. Unfortunatley, the price of this experience has gone up rapidly over the past ~1.5 years, starting out as a great value for ~$26 a person for the all-you-can-eat-and-drink to its present $37 cost, which--while perhaps reasonable for all that's offered--is no longer a bargan. I mean, I know that we are fishing out our seas and pushing populations of sea critters to the brink, but I was under the impression that the rate was not at the order of ~$10 in 18 months! My boyfriend is celebrating his birthday this month so I thought to take him to dinner at the Rusty Scupper, a place he has been wanting to try out forEVA, during Restaurant Week. The ambiance was amazing as expected with it being right on the water. And since it was nighttime, it made for such an intimate experience. We were seated off by ourselves which gave us a lot of privacy, even though I thought the seats might have been a little bit better where some of the other patrons were seated. Anyway, he got the seafood chowder and crabcake and grilled shrimp for his first and second course and I got the cream of crab soup and the blackened shrimp and grits for mine. While the food was fantastic, both of my entrees were mid-warm at best while my bf's food was piping hot. He couldn't even eat his soup right away it was so hot whereas mine wasn't like that at all. It was good, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't steaming hot either. My cheese grits had I believe Gouda and perhaps a touch of tabasco sauce was really good and my blackened shrimp was insanely good. Medium hot but still really good. Bf's grilled shrimp had a citrusy flavor to it and he said his mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables were really flavorful. He had a locally brewed beer and I had a chardonnay to go with dinner. For dessert, we each had a sample of creme brulee and key lime pie. Honestly, I ONLY wanted the creme brulee but I decided to play along. Both were good (the creme brulee was better) but neither were anything to write home about. But here is the part that gets weird: the check comes and I take it because it's my bf's birthday (sort of), put my credit card in and I leave it for the waiter. My bf excuses himself for the restroom at the same time the waiter comes to take the check. I'm thinking "great, it will be all settled by the time Boyfriend comes back." I watch the waiter swipe my card, get the printout receipts and proceed to walk PASS our table to watch the weather report on TV with a few other members of the waitstaff. I think he deliberately didn't come back until bf returned! I couldn't believe the waiter would walk right by me so he could watch TV. Up until that moment, I was going to leave more than 20 percent for a tip. Oh well. I wish I remembered his name; I found him condescending and so did my guy. All in all, it was a good experience and I was so glad I could do this for my man. But I won't be paying those prices anytime soon! read more

The only good thing about this restaurant are the views. You can see the entire inner harbor and at sunset, it's really beautiful! The food and the service were sooo soooooo bad. Our server couldn't care less about anything. I'll give you some examples I still remember from almost a month ago: 1 - me: "My food is cold" her: "What would you like me to do about it?" (i'm not kidding, that is a verbatim quote) 2 - me: "What kinds of bottled beers do you have?" her: "All the regular ones" (um... that's not helpful to me at all. you should have this memorized!!) Besides the horrible service, the food was gross. All of the food was lukewarm. Everything was brought out together, which is what we asked for. But we didn't ask for cold food. If you can't bring it all out together and all be hot, then don't do it. Shrimp was overcooked and overbattered. Everything way too salty. Barely any seafood in our barely warm crab soup. First time experience and I was pleased. Staff was amazingly on point, and the food wasn't bad either, however I'd rather cheaper prices for some oldbay spiced seafood at a shack type place - this was for the fancier me. Location is the main attraction here, as you look out onto the water, you don't realize your still in Baltimore. Watching the sunset is a plus if you can witness it from here. Parking in the garage is discounted, but you have to remember to get your ticket stamped from the hostess before exiting. read more

Have I had better seafood elsewhere? Yes. Have I paid much less for it? Yes. Is the view pretty great? Yes. Have I been to nicer restaurants? Yes. Is this the best seafood option on Inner Harbor? Probably. Inner Harbor, and anywhere you'd want to go in Baltimore is populated by chain restaurants. No way around that. Some are good, but they're chains. Maybe people here are cool with that. I'm usually not. If you come to Baltimore for a weekend and want some seafood by the Harbor (as many do) I'd recommend this place above other more hokey (Bubba Gump) places. Where should I start! Went here for Valentines day dinner. The parking; parking is a bit of a headache. When you head to the Rusty Scupper parking only section, you most likely won't find a spot or find people sitting and waiting for someone to come out, holding up eveyone else. Then you have to go back out the way you came in only to have to wait in line for the people trying to leave, paying an attendent one car at a time, with a traffic light holding up the line to get out as well. For the location and type of restaurant they claim to be, you would think they would have valet service. Reservation was handled pretty quickly, nIce table looking out on the bay. We were expecting great things. Since it was valentines day, I'm okay with a limited menu but as a seafood restaurant, I would expect seafood to be on the menu. Only seafood items were lump crab cakes and salmon. Come on! The rest of the menu, tenderloin, rib eye, lamb t-bone, chicken and add a lobster tail to any one if you like. Wife ordered the cream of crab soup for an appetizer. It tasted like gravy instead of soup. I had the muscles, they were good but somewhat cold. I ordered the crab cakes for my entree, wife ordered the lamb. Crab cakes were okay, I've had better. Wife got the lamb. I watched her try to cut into a piece for about 2 minutes before she could get a bite off. She took a taste and started eating the vegetables. The server came by and asked were we enjoying our meals and my wife hesitated and then said a polite yes. I asked what's wrong and she said it was tough. I had her order something else, the crabcakes that she didn't eat either. I don't blame her, they were just ok. Not what you would expect in Baltimore. I get better crab cakes at the fast food spots in Baltimore. Just because of the occassion, I ordered dessert, rasberry sorbet with cream and blueberries. Lets start by saying the customer service was impeccable! I found a piece of glass/hard plastic in my mashed potatoes...right I know....yikes! The waiter immediately got the GM and he took the foreign object in Question and replaced my meal immediately! They comped my meal and cocktail. Daniel was very responsive. I've lived here for almost 4 years, and I never had the desire of going to Rusty Scupper. Finally the opportunity came where I had to recommend RS to my family as they wanted seafood with a good view. We went on a Saturday late afternoon. The food is overpriced (even for the prix fixe lunch for $19.95 as the portions were small), and my family said that the food was too salty (especially the cream of crab). I had the oyster sampler (3 types of oysters), and that was ok. The service was not good either as the lady tried to charge dinner when we clearly ordered food before lunch was over. And still, the waiters were kind, attentive (attentive is a theme in my reviews, methinks), and accommodating to silly requests. What? I didn't want my veggies all fried up in butter. I love butter, and I mean LOVE, but I just wanted something steamed. Dude did not seem phased. Good service. The wine list is a great reflection of all the major areas around the world, from California to Argentina, and includes ideas about what might be spicy, or soft, or whatever to go with your meal. Big list, too. Crab cakes. Yum. YUM, crab cakes. And finally, the view. Right there in front of you is the beautiful city of Baltimore and the entire harbor. I was visiting the DC / Baltimore area with my 17 year old daughter, a classmate of hers and our Norwegian foreign exchange student over spring break. We had lived in the area 20 years ago, but now lived in LA, and none of the three girls had ever been to this part of the east coast. The inner harbor was as I remembered it, slightly more developed, but not in a bad way. Our intention was to go to Fells Point and have crabs for dinner, as I thought that was the quintessential Maryland experience that the girls should have. Unfortunately, for being a Sat eve, all of the "good" crab spots on Fells Point were booked until late, and as it was already starting to become a drunken rowdy spot, I thought it would be better to head back to the main harbor to eat. The Rusty Supper was there, as it had been 20 years ago, and had an open reservation, so off we went on the water taxi. 20 years ago, my husband and I were newly married, and broke, with one young daughter, and eating out at the Rusty Scupper was a little beyond our price range, so we had never gone. The girls were excited to have crab, and my Norwegian daughter had been dying for fish, as she eats it much more frequently in Norway than we do at home in LA. The service as impeccable. The food was very very average, at best. They did not have Maryland crabs, only crab cakes. One daughter ordered them, and they were dry. My Norwegian daughter ordered salmon and it was overcooked. Not being much of a fish eater, I ordered the Ribeye steak ($52). I know you're never supposed to eat a steak at a seafood restaurant, but with Ruth Chris' nearby, and McCormick and Schmidts next door, I felt it was a safe bet. At least a third of the steak was inedible due to gristle. I know for a "great steak" I would pay more than $52, but for $50+ I would at least expect a "good" steak...I would have done better buying my own at the grocery store. The decor is beautiful, the views are amazing, but I would NEVER go there for a meal again. At the end of the dinner, when the check came, I left a very modest tip. But, knowing that the tips are generally split between the waitstaff, and often the front and back, I pulled my waiter aside and gave him a generous cash tip, explaining that his service was impeccable, but my meal was awful. He apologized, and said that if I had told him, he would have gotten me a different steak. I smiled and said, I doubt if you would have brought out one that was much better, and it's ok - not your fault. Don't go to the Rusty Scupper expecting fine dining. You definitely pay for the view, not the food. I came here with my parents and the in-laws, and they were full of complaints (not that they normally aren't). I ordered the swordfish and it was so dry. Everyone thought the crab soup was so salty that people had to loudly voice their dislike. I ordered some special tilapia dish with veggies for my mom, cause she wanted something fresh, but since she said nothing about it and kept on stealing bites from my brother's crabcake, I must assume that it was not to her liking. After taking a bite from the caribbean mahi mahi, mother-in-law picked up the fish and placed it on father-in-law's plate. Or, maybe it wasn't the food but the awkward first meeting of in-law families. Or, maybe it was the notion of old Koreans that if it isn't Korean food, it isn't food. read more

The best part of the meal was sitting with my wife and looking out over the bay. The server was great even though he had to deal with some horrible food. My wife sent back a cup of soup and she NEVER sends back food. The calamari was done well, not over cooked. The rest of the meal was down hill from there. The special of the day was a blackened rock fish with crab, beans and carrots. The crab had no flavor, the fish was sparse and barely there. It was also 43 dollars. I had the fish and chips, I figured it was simple enough. I could have went to captain d's and saved myself some money. Between the drinks, the appetizers and meals, it totalled almost 100 dollars not including the soup they took off the meal price. There were two other entrees sent back that I know of from surrounding tables. Avoid this place if at all possible. Update: the management team contacted me asking for more details and said they wanted to make things right. Their efforts seem genuine, however I declined the offer. We went here last night. It's been a little while since we've visited the Inner Harbor so we thought we try the Rusty Scupper out. It was relatively easy to get a table and we were seated along the harbor with beautiful views. We started with crab nachos, which really aren't crab nachos at all. They are really pita chips with onions, tomatos, and then cheese melted on them with a side of their artichoke crab dip. No thanks on the artichoke but we had no way of knowing when we ordered it. For entrees, two had the shellfish platter (crab cake and stuffed shrimp), one had the fish and chips, and one had a salad and crab cake. The bread and aioli served was very good and out waiter was very polite and attentive. The entrees were average at best. We all agreed that the fish and chips were probably the best entree. The crab cakes were very fishy and the vegetables were overly salted to the extent that you just didn't eat them. So, this is a beautiful place with friendly people and pretty good service. It's unfortunate that the food doesn't match these attributes. Add to that that we spent $300 for four people and you can see why the 2 star rating. There are a ton of better options at the Inner Harbor (and Fells Point) if you want great food and service. In the end, I cannot recommend the Rusty Scupper. read more

I went on a date here and let me say I'm giving two stars for the atmosphere and the view. It was SO pretty!!! I would come back to sit at the bar and have drinks. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn;t good. I'm all about paying a lot for a good meal, i mean i would eat at MiniBar all day every day lol. But i can't get with paying high prices for sub par food. I got the stuffed shrimp, and the crab meat was not lump. It lacked flavor so much that i had to use some of the pepper dipping sauce from the bread to put on top of it. The green beans were the best thing on my plate, maybe because they tasted like butter, and who can go wrong with that? My date had the Alaskan crab legs, and they were 60$ for a pound and a half. They were soggy and difficult to pull the meat from. Def a disappointment. Again, beautiful restaurant and view. The service was good, but the food reminded me of banquet food. Yuk. read more

Came here for a group event on the top floor. First let me say the location/views are great. Really nice view of the harbor and you can walk out onto the deck for additional seating/standing room - very nice space to spend and evening. The service was very very good, the food was good. My one complaint would be that the crab cakes were charred on the outsides. All in all I'll return again. So I came to this location last weekend for some seafood. I hadn't heard very good things about the restaurant but have always seen it and wanted to give it a go. I made a reservation and the lady I talked to on the phone was very friendly and accommodating... Upon arriving I found the hosts to be not that friendly and maybe a bit overwhelmed, I don't know if they were or were not. They just didn't seem to be the first thing you would want to be greeted by when you first come in. The server we had was ok. For a "fine dining" establishment I would expect the staff to be a tad bit more polished and at the very least have an immense amount of menu knowledge. Considering the prices that are charged here, I want to know what I am buying. I had the oysters for an appetizer they were good! But they require absolutely no preparation accept shucking them, so I would hope you wouldn't mess up an oyster it's almost impossible lol.... The dinner, that's what I had issues with I ordered the crab cakes which were 36.00. The taste of the crab cakes were ok. I have had better at the corner stable in Towson and other places in Maryland. The sides were mediocre and lifeless. You definitely don't come here for the sides lol... I out of curiousity asked about the crab cakes and was informed that they actually are not authentic crab cakes because the meat itself is not from Maryland... That was very disheartening to know especially for the price... It is quite sad they would make it seem like you are over looking the harbor and thinking this is where the crabs come from.... Yea not the case... In my opinion these need to be revamped if you want to charge 16.00 just to add one to anything you have for dinner. The tropic tornado drink I had was good, nice tropical drink... It's made with Malibu so it's not that strong and it is sweet. The dessert was good, the trio. I wasn't to bog on the sweet potatoe cheesecake but that may have just been a preference for me... The view was breath taking, however I think that is why these prices are so high, you are paying for that... Definitely not the quality of the food. I may have just had a bad experience and it may not always be like that. I am open to try it again but am in no rush to find my way through their doors anytime soon. What an amazing location and view. My wife & I walked through the Inner Harbor to eat here. It has great ambiance and we scored an amazing table for two on a fairly busy Thursday night without a reservation. We enjoyed good but deliberately slow service throughout our meal. Our grilled watermelon salad and crab cakes were both delicious as well was the mashed redskin potatoes and green beans. The meal was simply terrific. No dessert because we were too stuffed. Our waiter learned we were in town for the weekend and for the first time. He produced all kinds of tips for things to do and places to see. Nice bonus. The food was reasonably priced for the location and quality of cuisine. The two Maryland crab cakes were $32 which included the mashed potatoes and green beans. I recommend eating here. read more

I really don't like writing bad reviews, but I feel this experience deserves to be told. I do have to preface this by saying we only tried a few things off their menu and are basing our review on this. First, the views and ambience are excellent. The whole restaurant is designed to take advantage of the inner harbor view so there really isn't a bad place to be seated. The service was fine. No complaints here. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately, the food is a perfect representation of Rusty Scruppers current 3.5 star review average. Not good, but not bad enough to complain. You would almost come back here for the view alone and ignore the mediocre food. The French fries were old and somehow over salted. Disappointing, but i can over look this. I cut into my fish and noticed that it looked like crab meat. Isn't fried fish supposed to be flaky? The fish and chips I had at another restaurant last week were, but I'm not expert. Tasted mediocre to me, but not bad. Fast forward to the end of my meal, and my wife is asking me to smell her last fish she just cut into and took a bite of. It smelled strange... Almost like ammonia? Hmmm. That's a little alarming, as I look at my now empty plate. We ended up telling our waiter the bad news when he came to clear our table. Promptly the manager came and apologized for the fish and said he would ask the chef what he thought. Moments later the waiter returned and asked if we wanted dessert, which we promptly declined. Can you blame us? At this point I'm wondering if I was going to spend the rest of my day with a bucket or in the bathroom! They comped my wife's fish dish, which seamed inappropriate. That's what you do when someone ordered a medium rare steak and got medium, not when they were served fish that already began decomposing on the plate. I don't care about the money, since that was never the issue. I'll happily pay $19 for good seafood! I would have expected that manager to come back and assure me that this was an insanely rare and unfortunate occurrence. My stomach felt queazy for the next few hours, but that was probably placebo. My wife still looks pale and nauseous five hours later, hopefully it's nothing and not food poisoning. Either way, meal was ruined. read more

Overall, I had a decent but unspectacular experience at the Rusty Scupper. NOTE: I'm not a huge seafood person, so my opinion may differ significantly from yours. I went with a group of friends after two of them became engaged. I had never eaten at this establishment before, but it's very stereotypical in it's "seafood restaurant" decor (though it was still nice). After arriving and getting seated, service was pretty excellent. However, more on that in a moment. The restaurant even gave the newly engaged couple free glasses of champagne, which was pretty nice. However, upon asking for additional bread during our meal, the waiter simply scavenged a partially full basket of bread from one side of our group (who was still eating the bread) to the other end of the table that requested it. We were shocked! For as much as the food costs here, I feel that they could have spared another basket of bread. Is bread that big of an expense where the server must "re-use" and "redistribute" idle bread? After this, the server got a little bit smart with one member of our group, but my friend was probably the cause of this. Pros: Excellent views of downtown Baltimore, very good sides (the fries were spectacular), the steak was almost perfectly prepared, and the table bread was excellent. Cons: The prices make me wonder if the food is fortified with diamonds, some of the seafood portions were notably small, the whole bread situation, the server could have diffused the situation with a member of our party better instead of resorting to like a jerk, Overall, I can recommend this place if you want a nice view of the city and eat overpriced but adequate seafood. I went to dinner tonight for my birthday. I had the best waiter ever. His name was John. I had my 5 children with me and he was great with them. He didn't mind explaining the menu to them and answering their questions. He made sure our glasses were full and that we had everything we needed. We didn't have to wait long for our food and he made sure he cleared the table right away. We even chit chatted a bit and he couldn't believe I was 42. I eat out at all kinds of restaurants but John made my day. I wish I could clone him. By the way the food was great. I loved the scallops and the drunken mussels. I hadn't been to The Rusty Scupper in over 20 years. It won't be that long until my next visit. read more

Really appreciated the customer service, it was genuinely good, I was pleasantly surprised, and I loved the food.

This restaurant seems to have everything in its favor. A beautiful 360 view of Baltimore, the water, and the most delicious crab cakes and seafood. We came here as a party of 6 as our penultimate family vacation dinner. We had to wait around 15 minutes as we were early for our reservation but they gladly accommodated us in the bar area until our table was ready. Our table was right next to the piano player and he provided the perfect jazz accompaniment for our night. We ordered the oyster sampler, calamari, and maryland crab soup as starters and they were all delicious precursors of the meal to come. The fresh oysters were amazingly crisp and clean tasting rendering any need for sauce useless. The calamari was standard as could be found in most other restaurants as was the crab soup. The crab cakes, however, were the star of the show. Horrible experience on my B'day! 1st of all I was ask to show my ID the moment I walk in. I had a schedule dinner party that was seating in the main dining area not private, but due to unfortunate circumstances some of my guest couldn't make it. I must admit I had an excellent waiter who wanted to wait on me as well as my guest on ordering individually on what they wanted to order. Well here we go the General Manager walk up to me asking to speak with me about a menu that was prepared by me, and my guest had to select from that menu otherwise they'll be charged an additional price for ordering something else. The General Manager didn't want to here from me nor my guest and wasn't trying to make the transaction run smoothly, not to mention by Visa card was charge $200.00 in advance days before the dinner.. My brother took me to have dinner near the harbor since i was in town. This restaurant had a nice atmosphere the workers were nice. They all worked together to take care of tables in the restaurant which I thought was awesome. I ordered a long island and he ordered an caramel apple martini. My drink was good I did the usual. We ordered calamari and I had crab cream soup for my appetizer. The calamari and the crab soup was flavorful and tasty. For dinner we ordered the crab cakes that came with two sides. The crab cakes were really good. Jumbo lump crabmeat with spices and drizzled in a butter sauce. Green beans were ok and the mash potatoes were luke warm. However when I told our server Shanara she immediately returned with a hot portion of mash potatoes. The overall experience was wonderful. Nothing negative to report. The view was also beautiful in and outside the restaurant. read more

Brunch buffet; I expected more and better. There is significant hype surrounding the cuisine, here...; why?? The food is OK; nothing memorable. I found nothing from the spread enticing, sadly. The view of the harbor from within the dining room, however, is very lovely. I would give the RS a second chance but would not return for the brunch buffet. read more

We drove into Baltimore, figured we'd try some sea food. I ordered crabcakes Bridget ordered fried oysters. I have to say the view was fantastic. Right out over the water. My crabcakes was a single cake, clearly containing crab, but I who have never made acrabcake could have done better. Underwhelming. The fried oysters looked good but were filled with an unappetizing green goop oozing out. Maybe normal for a fried oyster I stand corrected it is normal. Also had the calimari. Meh. read more

Came here for dinner during a business trip in Baltimore. I was a little hesitant to come here since it was a chain restaurant. But I'm definitely glad I decided to come. The restaurant is located right on the water at the inner harbor, so the views of the water and the whole inner harbor itself while dining are amazing. I ordered the crab cakes and bouillabaisse and both were delicious. The bouillabaisse was some of the best I've ever had and the seafood was some of the freshest that I've tasted. Had a few glasses of red wine to top it off and it was a great meal with great atmosphere. Definitely recommended. read more

Dinner was enjoyable, Me and the Hubby went last night for our Anniversary. I had the Chilean Sea bass (Maryland Style, which had quite a few bit of shells in it), which was very tasty, but a bit small.. I was expecting a bigger portion of fish. My hubby had stuffed shrimp, which were rather small, but tasty. The drinks were good and so was the appetizer (Calamari, which was recommended by the waitress) also we had the cream of crab, which was surprisingly good, but hubby said the crab in it tasted old, lol. Overall not too pricey and the view was beautiful. read more
