Came here as this place won best fish & chips in the recent past years. I got the AYCE combo which came with 2 pieces of fried fish & 2 pieces of baked fish. I liked the fried portion (good, not great) but the baked was over cooked. You also get a side of coleslaw (good) & a choice of either potato pancakes, fries or home made kettle chips. Fries is the best, the other 2 options were mediocre. Service was good. Parking tough in the lot, be prepared to wait for up to 10 mins for someone to leave. However the place is crowded so I'm sure it's probably good for other things. The ambience is very casual. I did not get more than one portion of fish so they were sweet to let us take home leftovers from our plate. read more

First time here. Drove up from Arlington Hts to give it a try. Well worth it. Went on a Friday night and the place was packed, a good sign. Had an hour wait but they had a separate room in back with a bar set up & pop corn machine & a server handing out hot pretzel bites. Every person working there, from the hostess, bartenders, server handing out pretzel bites to our waitress (Amy) were above and beyond friendly and helpful. Our fish fry was the best we've ever had. Perch was excellent & combo plate was just as good. Can't wait to head back up. Kudos to the owner(s). You have a great restaurant with happy employees!!! read more

Be prepared to wait, because it's worth it. They don't take reservations so we waited about hour for a table for two. They have an area where you can wait for your table. You can grab a drink and they provide snacks (popcorn and pretzels). I have to say the bartender and waitress were wonderful!! The woman at the door seating people was incredibly rude and abrasive so be prepared!! But I have to say over all great date night! The fish was amazing and perfectly breaded. The interior was nice and the banquet room was attractive! The shells and marinara lacked sauce, but not cheese. A Pasty mess that a third of it was left for the garbage. The waitress was not friendly, more interested in the party going on or something else. The carry out boxes were too big and a waste of space for what we had left over, they were just thrown towards us. The garlic bread was salty and over- seasoned! The kettle chips were great! So..THE FISH FRY. It's not all you can eat when the server is trying as hard as possible not to bring you any extra fish. Our server MELANIE asked if we wanted more fish while we still had some on our plate. We said no (obviously), we'll wait till we're finished. She comes back 20 minutes later very quickly trying to finish us up and give us a check. We had to awkwardly ask for more fish. She was literally trying to RUN away from our table as we're talking. Well..we get more fish. One whole piece each served on one plate for three adults. lol. She then proceeds to spill the remainder of one of our beers on the table and not bring another one for the accident. Ok MELANIE. They charge 16.99 for a meager plate. They'll make you feel bad for asking for any more than that. Typical fish fry. Kind of a scam if you ask me. The food was ok but nothing memorable. The Fish Fry is Excellent It's been several years since we went to the Rusty Nail for fish so we gave it another visit and we're glad we did. Located in quiet little Ringwood, their parking lot, especially on fish fry Friday, is packed, but we did find a spot. There are many dining areas inside and all were pretty full, but we opted to eat out on the back patio taking advantage of the warm weather. The patio is huge and there was only one other couple there when we sat down. A few more groups sat outside during our visit. My wife ordered the Reuben Sandwich ($13.00) and a side salad for an extra $1.50. I ordered the Friday Fish Fry Special which is all you can eat haddock, baked, beer battered, or a combo of both for $16.00. I know they have several beers on tap, but don't recall what I ordered. I do remember that a 'tall' was only $3.50 and that's a pretty good deal. It was just a short wait for our meals to come out. The Reuben is a stack of juicy, tender, tasty, thin sliced corned beef piled high an marble rye with just a bit of sauerkraut and 1000 island dressing with a side pickle. The side salad had fresh greens and veggies and my wife had the house made creamy garlic dressing which our server recommended - and it was a great dressing! My fish plate had two portions of baked fish and two beer battered and fried filets. Joining the fish was a pile of what I think were battered french fries. A super light crunchy coating over the potato fry and the inside was nice and soft. The baked fish was seasoned well, just the right amount of salt, paprika and maybe some house blend. The fried fish was just the way I like it. A very thin batter covering a thick, flaky fish. The flavor is very much like the usual cod you see at fish frys. A few dabs of melted butter and fresh lemon on each bite just made both styles of fish even better. Tarter sauce is available for those that want it. I'm a big eater and had no desire for more fish, but it is all you can eat. This has to be one of the best fish frys around. read more

Love this place for the fish fry. Went for lunch with mom (91 in a wheelchair). We were just before the lunch crowd so getting a table was easy. Not sure what the accommodations are for people with mobility issues. I'll Have to ask the next time we go. Luckily there was a low table available to accommodate the wheelchair. It was even nicer that right next where we sat and an arm reach away were the slots. $20 in and $68 out. Not a bad day. Oh yea..... We both enjoyed the lunch fish special, the potato pancakes were very tasty. Can I get the recipe? Our server Rory made our visit enjoyable. My friend and I love a good fish fry and the Rusty Nail had won the Best of The Fox just for that. With that said, we talked about going there for a couple years. In the end, I wished we stayed away. Yes, it's packed with people, yes we had to wait for a table and yes the place is huge but what a disappointment. The service was good, but the fish fry was awful. Hands down the BEST fish fry around including into Wisconsin! The coleslaw doesn't have a grocery store bitter aftertaste so you know it's homemade. The fish portions are huge to start with and be sure to try the combo fried and baked haddock. This place is busy for a reason and the potato pancakes aren't the skimpy small ones some places serve. Listen, I rarely write bad reviews, but I can't understand what people like about this place. I'm all for greasy, deep fried bar food, but this was all pretty flavorless and unimpressive to me. I knew this would be difficult, but the menu offered only 2 gluten free, pescatarian options, so I settled for the jumbo shrimp appetizer. It was 5, overcooked and flavorless, overpriced shrimp on a soggy piece of lettuce - not a fan. The rest of my party got the cheese curds, fish fry and chicken tender meal. We came for the fish fry and unfortunately it didn't sound like anyone enjoyed what they had. I'm surprised because this totally seems like a place my family would like. Everyone said their meals lacked flavor and just weren't really worth eating. Sucks when you spend that much on food and don't even want to eat it. The only redeeming quality was the service and how quickly the food came out - that was all great. The servers were all over it and were very attentive. Video gaming available. Large bar area. I would like to leave a great review, but I never had a chicken dinner that was the worst one of my 62 years in my life ! The other guests that I had dined with were happy with the the things that they ordered. Broasted chicken that I had ordered was at least 3 days old & had been re fried. I thought that I would have choked to death if I already had some water to re hydrate the jerky that was on my plate. Please don't order that or BLT sandwich the bacon is old also!! read more
