Date of visit: December 13, 2025 I love a good Mexican place, and as much as I enjoy Carlos's, it is good to have other options for when I go to visit my friend in the McHenry/Spring Grove area. The restaurant is very large with a variety of seating options including some interesting swings. I say interesting because it's really more of a novelty than anything; honestly, do you really want to have a seat that moves while you're eating chips with salsa? The menu is interesting, with a heavy focus on birria (think brisket, if you're unfamiliar) including in a dipped/fried taco as well as a grilled cheese sandwich, which is what I went with. While the meat in the sandwich was good, there was very little cheese to speak of, and that should be an important component of a grilled...cheese. However the chips and salsa were excellent, with some of the best chips I've had in quite some time, they really taste like more. In terms of the salsa, they are not lying with the "Diablo" in their name. If you are not a fan of spicy, stay away from the salsas as even the mild is fairly potent after a few chips. Also note that sour cream is available but doesn't tend to come WITH things by default, so be prepared to ask for that if it's a key part of your Mexican meals. Also disappointing, the tacos come with raw onions on top. This isn't mentioned on the menu, and was a very unwelcome addition to the dish. Service was a bit of a mixed bag; Jasmine was nice and attentive but struggled on some aspects, including telling us what the three salsas were when she brought them to the table, and saying that birria was a "biscuit," which thoroughly confused us. She asked if we wanted more chips and we declined, but then she brought more anyways. read more

Hope ownership at least thinks about making adjustments for these comments.. The food and drinks are great...really good. The ambience is great. But you have one small problem, it's critical and it can be fixed. Waiters and waitresses need training and management. They take your drink order, delver you drink and take a break on their phone at the bar And pay zero attention to the room. Take your order....same process, deliver your food, same process. Getting their attention outside of these main "dinner events" is next to impossible. They need guidance and management. It's really bad. Fix it and you win big. read more

This is definitely hidden gem in downtown McHenry across from Bimbo's. The ambience is very nice and the staff is very friendly. If you have a chance to sit at the bar, the seats are extremely comfortable. The steak burrito was fresh and delicious and same with my mango margarita. I give this place 4.5 stars. read more

Probably wouldn't recommend as it was hard to eat swinging the whole time and trying to lean over the plate lol I think if you are just ordering drinks and appetizers it would be more fun/easier to gab and swing. The atmosphere is immense, so much to admire but without the feeling like it's trying too hard. And if you're not a fan of their decor, you'll be a fan of the food. (They got swing seats too that's an extra bonus) Sitting down and looking at the menu, I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting much. I asked my server, Jasmin (who was phenomenal by the way, attentive to all her tables) what was good here and she was very helpful and a big fan of the birria, and I was too once I was finished. So much flavor! I ordered the chilaquiles with birria and it sounds like a strange combo but it works! The presentation was something out of a food magazine. The salsa verde had a really good balance of flavor and heat, the frijoles were amazing, chips were crunchy. The cheese and cilantro were evenly distributed. My fiancée and I were able to finally have a kid free date night and wanted to try something new. She had heard of this place in McHenry that was a Mexican style restaurant and had swings as their seats . After googling, we found out it was Whiskey Diablo. We decided to give it a go and we were not let down at all! First, we saw that a reservation was recommended online so we booked at table at 630. Fast and simple to do. We weren't sure if we would get a table with swings but we booked anyways. We were seated promptly upon arrival at a high top for 2 near the bar. Immediately, our server, Makayla came over and greeted us. We asked if it was possible to get a table with swings if one became available. Makayla couldn't have been more accommodating as she had a table that had just paid and she was able to move us. The ambiance of the restaurant is amazing. A little loud but overall a complete relaxing, fun and social atmosphere. We started with the Devil Wears Tequila and a Whiskey Cilantro Smash to drink. These two were absolutely delicious and refreshing! For food we ordered the Jalapeño Poppers (pic below after we ate 2, our apologies). The presentation was unique and the bacon, chorizo and cream cheese blend was perfection with a great kick with the jalapeño salsa. My fiancée orders the Handmade Birria Tacos. The birria was perfectly done and served impressively on 3 different tortilla shells. The rice and beans were exceptional. I ordered the Camarones a la Diabla Bowl. I asked Makayla if they were spicy she said yes. To be fair, I like spicy. Like sweats and nose running spicy. The shrimp flavor was phenomenal but I wanted more spice so I added the spicy hot sauce that came with the birria tacos. This was an amazing dish, perfectly balanced and filling. For my 2nd drink, I ordered the Old Fashioned Inferno. This was an EPIC presentation of a drink. It was served smoked and the smell was so strong and pleasant. It definitely has a bit of a kick but is a wonderful drink to sip on. But to top the evening off, and the main reason we will come back, was the service, smile and attitude of Makayla. She was an absolute pleasure to engage in conversation and easy to make jokes and laugh with. She makes you want to work at Whiskey Diablo and enjoy the staffs company. She offered us flan as a dessert and we couldn't say no. It's pictured below but of course we got to it before we took a picture. So smooth and refreshing and light. Perfect for a dessert and tasted like ice cream and not too much caramel. Whiskey Diablo quickly moved to the top of our list of restaurants. We will be back multiple times. The menu has so much to offer and so many more drinks we want to try. And of course, we will make sure Makayla is our server ! Whiskey Diablo - (2/5) I had high hopes for Whiskey Diablo, but unfortunately, it was a complete letdown. From the moment we walked in, the service was abysmal, and the food was even worse. Our server was completely inattentive. She didn't even bother asking if we wanted drinks--at a place called Whiskey Diablo, you'd think they'd be pushing their drink menu, right? Nope. We sat there waiting, assuming she'd come back, but she never did. To make things worse, when we were finally done eating, she didn't even bring us our bill. We had to track someone down just to pay and get out of there. Absolutely unacceptable. I came here expecting flavorful, authentic Mexican tacos, but what I got was bland, uninspired, and clearly made for people who don't know what real Mexican food should taste like. The tortillas were dry and tasted store-bought, the meat was underseasoned, and the toppings felt like an afterthought. It's almost like they just threw together whatever they had lying around and hoped for the best. If I wanted tacos this disappointing, I could've just gone to a fast-food chain and saved my money. The only reason this review isn't a 1-star is that the place itself looks decent. The décor is trendy, and it could be a good spot if they actually cared about service and food quality. Unfortunately, the vibe is completely ruined when you're sitting there waiting endlessly for your server to do their job. Whiskey Diablo is all hype and no substance. The service is some of the worst I've ever experienced, and the food is a sad excuse for "Mexican cuisine." I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone unless you enjoy being ignored and eating flavorless tacos. Do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else. read more

We sat in the booths with swings for seats, so it was definitely a unique experience. My wife had the chicken fajitas and also said they were good. 2 of the 3 salsas were very spicy, but the green one was mild enough to eat without needing a drink to sooth my tongue! Aesthetically pleasing! This place was visually stimulating...and I loved it. The music was great and perfect volume. We could enjoy a conversation and hear people around us but also enjoy their amazing music selection. I want to sit in the swings next time- if I'm being honest when I walked by when they were in the process of opening I thought they were not a great choice. I get their vision now. Finally, the food was amazing. We had a burrito and the Birria Quesatacos followed up with churro bites. The refried beans are actually better than the birria baked beans but those were amazing too. I had the Burning Love margarita- no spice at all, very sweet and texturally kind of thick- my least favorite of the meal. The ice cube was cool though. So let's start with the atmosphere, it's kind of fun with the open windows, art work l, just all round interesting set up. I recommend checking out the bath room. I never thought i would say I had fun in it. We took selfie like we were teens ;). . The swing seats are fun but they need a bar under the table to rest your feet on for us shorties. That would be a great addition to them. We will not sit there again. Ok on to the food. The food was delicious and had great flavors. I can't wait to go back and try more. We started with cocktails. Arrived on a Thursday evening at 5:00. Was warmly greeted immediately by the hostess and we asked to sit at the bar. The place was at 50% capacity. Atmosphere was very relaxed and had good vibes.
