I had a great time due to the bartender (Jessica) being a complete joy and hard working.

Whiskey Diablo - Chilaquiles with birria

We went this weekend and had such a great experience! We were put on a waitlist when we arrived,…read moreand I loved that they text you when your table is ready. We got seated in the swing seats, which honestly weren't nearly as impractical as I thought they'd be I'll admit, some of the prices threw me off a little at first, but once the food came out, I completely understood. Everything was SO good. We got the tableside guac, steak fajitas, birria quesatacos, and a kids meal, and I genuinely wouldn't change a single thing we ordered. And the birria beans?! INSANE. Already looking forward to coming back!

Date of visit: December 13, 2025…read more I love a good Mexican place, and as much as I enjoy Carlos's, it is good to have other options for when I go to visit my friend in the McHenry/Spring Grove area. The restaurant is very large with a variety of seating options including some interesting swings. I say interesting because it's really more of a novelty than anything; honestly, do you really want to have a seat that moves while you're eating chips with salsa? The menu is interesting, with a heavy focus on birria (think brisket, if you're unfamiliar) including in a dipped/fried taco as well as a grilled cheese sandwich, which is what I went with. While the meat in the sandwich was good, there was very little cheese to speak of, and that should be an important component of a grilled...cheese. However the chips and salsa were excellent, with some of the best chips I've had in quite some time, they really taste like more. In terms of the salsa, they are not lying with the "Diablo" in their name. If you are not a fan of spicy, stay away from the salsas as even the mild is fairly potent after a few chips. Also note that sour cream is available but doesn't tend to come WITH things by default, so be prepared to ask for that if it's a key part of your Mexican meals. Also disappointing, the tacos come with raw onions on top. This isn't mentioned on the menu, and was a very unwelcome addition to the dish. Service was a bit of a mixed bag; Jasmine was nice and attentive but struggled on some aspects, including telling us what the three salsas were when she brought them to the table, and saying that birria was a "biscuit," which thoroughly confused us. She asked if we wanted more chips and we declined, but then she brought more anyways.

No one was there except us....the entire night.....weird compared to back in the day. The deck was a little overgrown and we didn't see any ducks. The paddle wheel is now on land and not in the water, but hey, I am sure I don't look the same as I did 20 years ago either. Once we got inside, It was just like old times. Quaint. The service from Barbara could not have been more personable and attentive. We truly enjoyed her! She mixed a wicked Brandy old fashioned and was quick, but not too quick with her service. The food was all excellent from the relish trays, to the beer cheese pretzel ball and mozzarella sticks. Our dinners ranged from prime ribs...fantastic by the wAy, to meatloaf, butt steak, a burger and ribeye. All were cooked wonderfully. Excellent flavor, fresh salads and nicely prepared potatoes. They prepared a homemade birthday cake. Our entire experience tonight could not have been better in any way. Although it has been 20 years since we were last with you, it will be soon that we return. Don't miss this diamond in the rough!!!

Whether you are sitting inside this establishment or outside, you will not get disappointed with…read morethe food or service! This local town pub starts your table off with a bowl of freshly popped popcorn to get that salty fix we all desire before indulging in an ice cold beverage. Their menu includes everything from burgers to seafood specialties. My sister gobbled up their shrimp tacos that were bursting with flavor! As for myself, I devoured their wings, as they came out hot, crisp, and spiced perfectly without having to drench them in sauces. For the first time, I brought my pup with me to enjoy sitting outside - who then proceeded to entertain fellow diners along with their live musician. My Frenchie took pictures with town residents, had a young customer take him for a walk, and even got a selfie with our waitress. Everyone treated him like a celebrity! Casual, extremely friendly, and great tasting food sums up a hometown experience you shouldn't pass up! Keep popping GROVE!
