Fun lively tavern with decent and reasonably priced food. Love The atmosphere and friendly service. The chicken wings were good but the fries were a tad soggy. The shrimp were hot and tasty but the cocktail sauce had the consistency of jello. The tartar sauce was good. Tons of locals - it has a very welcoming atmosphere. The outdoor patio has nice seating and the interior of the restaurant has beautiful paneling and booth seating as well as high top seating. Will try the burgers next time - people say that is what this place does best. Bartender was also our waitress and despite serving a large crowd at the bar - she was very attentive. read more

This is the perfect bar / tavern to relax and have a drink and some food after visiting the Illinois Railway Museum. The bar is just beautiful and when you enter you feel like you just stepped back in time to the prohibition days. The bar definitely has history and you can feel it. Even if you are just passing by and the crowd is definitely local with regulars you will feel welcomed. Staff is friendly and effective. The menu is what you would expect for bar food: burgers, wraps, salads... so plenty of choices for everyone and it was good and well priced. In a nutshell it was a perfect experience and I wish more towns would have a bar of that quality. read more

Ever since going out to the IL Train Museum since 2020 this place is the place to go when eating at the train museum. The food is great! I enjoy the cowboy burger with bacon and mayo added in there as well with fries or tots and it's worth coming to every time I come out to IRM or in Union IL. read more

The seating inside consists mainly of tall tables which is so popular but not everyone likes those and they are not exactly handy for challenged people. Thus the 4 star rating. read more

We went to this bar this weekend in hopes of sitting in the beer garden, unfortunately the weather prevented that from happening. We sat inside and had the burgers and they were very good! Ahhhhhh oldest and best wateringhole around. This place belongs in the untamed wild west. Where else can you find an "original" 1898 Baby Grand keyboard hanging on the wall. Story has it William Clasen opened the bar in 1900. It is truly the oldest tavern/bar in McHenry County. The building inside is as it was over a hundred years ago! It is a time warp when you walk in starting with the old time creeky aluminum screen door. The food is absolutely excellent. From appetizers of cheese bites to the crispiest wings around to sandwiches and burgers you will NOT be disappointed nor will you leave hungry. My heart of hearts wants me to leave 5 stars. Now comes the but....... Clasens was recently bought from the original owners. And with new owners comes price changes. And it really is a shame. We went for appetizers (we shared one), two burgers and a four or five beers. The bill was over one hundred dollars! $100 for beer and burgers. This is a dive bar. Nostalgic and lovely but it is still a dive bar. If I'm going to spend $100 on dinner and drinks this wouldn't be my first choice. It's so sad that they ruined this little piece of history, a gathering spot for locals and farmers alike. Waitress/bartender isn't very friendly and doesn't have a great attitude with regular patrons if you're not a reoccurring local or buying her a shot. My new little gem!! Great little bar off the beaten path in Union. Situated in nice old building (from 1900) brimming with history. Love the (what looks to be original) nostalgic - turn of the century decor. Complete with baby grand piano circa 1898! Perfect bar ambiance. Very comfortable inside. Nice sized bar staffed with friendly bartenders. This is our second time at this bar and first time we ordered food. We ordered a Mac n cheese bites for an appetizer and they were delicious. For dinner we had the half pound burger which was delicious as well. Their website claims the meat is fresh never frozen and triple ground. I believe it. The patty was hand packed, cooked and seasoned to perfection. They have an impressive menu. Be sure to visit their website to familiarize yourself. There is something for everyone including a veggie burger. Drinks are reasonably priced and served nice and cold. I ordered a dirty martini that was made to perfection. I also had a couple Bud Lights which was served nice and cold. This little bar has everything I look for in a neighborhood bar. They also have an outdoor patio if you would like to sit outside but you would be missing out on fantastic atmosphere the inside has to offer. Wanted to take a drive out a farm area to have lunch. Found this place on Yelp. Friendly place, staff & owner very nice. We always dine in momma poppa restaurants. We had the the shrimp special & I had the homemade burger. The red clam soup was also good. We met the great grandson of the original owners from the 1900's that was so n for a drink. How often do you meet a great grandson from an establishment that started in the 1900's. Spoke with the nice owner & he told us that they have pig roast, LOBSTER bakes, & much more through out the year. read more

An absolute gem in the cornfields! Not really far away from surrounding towns, but far enough that you feel like you've escaped the everyday bustle. Oldest bar in Mchenry County holds the tradition of never closing even during prohibition I've heard. This bar has as many folk tales as it does cold beer and good patrons. The wine selection is excellent and the kitchen produces some amazing meals. Inside enjoy the nice a/c and outside the cozy patio. We found this place (way off the beaten path for us) It's a super old bar with awesome food and drinks. They always have a food special and just opened an outdoor patio. What else do you need? Pleanty of parking and there is always a few classic cars or bikes parked up front. The owner is always here walking around and hanging out with the guests. This place is 30 mins from our house but we would drive an hour for the experience. Oh did I mention that dogs are allowed on the outside patio? Just awesome! read more

Great looking interior. They have plexiglass between the booths and the bartender/waitress kept her distance. I had the American burger with cheese and bacon. It was excellent. My hubby had the buffalo chicken wrap. He liked it; it was spicy but not too spicy. Our meals came with chips but we ordered a basket of fries as the appetizer. They came out the same time as our meals but that was OK. They were the large crinkly kind and they were very hot which we enjoyed. No draft beer and no moscato. Stopped here for lunch after driving the Autumn Trail. My husband ordered a glass of red wine. He was offered either one of those mini Sutter Home glass-size bottles or a second choice that the bartender rated as just a little better than Sutter Home. Huh? We are at a bar and those are the only 2 red wine choices? For lunch he ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with chips. The cheese slices on the sandwich were not melted. So the cheese tasted cold. As far as the potato chips, I think he was served the bottom of the bag because they were small little broken pieces. Also, the portion size of the chips was minimal. Oh well. read more
