Food is good and is quick. The man who I think is the owner is super friendly. The young waitress there is also very friendly and accommodating. There is an older waitress there however, brunette, that probably needs some customer service training. She has a bad issue with staring, and just doesnt seem very friendly. The first time I walked in, she told me she assumes I am here for takeout (which seemed rude but also kind of bizarre). When I was telling her what I wanted, she shushed me after the second thing, even though I wasn't talking very fast. Maybe we just got off on the wrong foot or something but she gave me the impression like she didn't want me there, like I don't belong. Maybe she should get some pointers from the younger lady there, she was very nice. There is an elderly woman there too who also has a staring problem but she was actually very nice. If they could just work with this one lady on being a bit more friendly, that would be great. I took one more star away because I think they need an online update. A website with a menu would be nice, and maybe an up to date credit card tap reader. Food was excellent! read more

It's ok, not the greatest food and the staff... could be nicer, I have been here maybe 10-15 times over the 10 years I have lived here, nothing has really changed. Really not priced great either, no redeeming factors, you are better off going to Dino's for breakfast or lunch. Also every time I have been there my table was not very clean or sticky. Ok, let's get past the fact that I was in Marengo and why I was there isn't important... After finishing up we decided we were hungry. After consulting the GPS, we decided upon Marengo Cafe as I'm all about whole in the wall diners. Ok, it isn't totally a whole in the wall, but it is definitely not a chain - which I was happy about. The selection was plentiful and I had a hard time deciding between breakfast and a normal meal for lunch. I opted for a burger, fries and coke. A good choice if I do say so myself. Friendly service and a warm environment rounded-out the visit. Overall, I look forward to returning the next time I'm in Marengo. read more

I was going to the Illinois Railway Museum in Union and was early and hungry, so I rolling into Marengo looking for some breakfast. state street features a couple cafes and this one was on the side of the street closest to me. It is a local place for sure. People know each other and stand and visit. I was greeted quickly and warmly and seated right away. I noticed several Museum volunteers having breakfast. Menu is pretty standard fare. Food came up quickly, was cooked properly, and was sufficient without feeling like I needed to un-notch the belt when I was done. Price was reasonable. I came in here since I was on my way to Belvidere, and was hungry. I read about the restaurant on Yelp, and wanted something cheap that wasn't a chain restaurant. This fulfilled my desire. The menu is very large, and features breakfast entrees (eggs, omelettes, pancakes, french toast, crepes, waffles) as well as sandwiches and other entrees. There is a small kids menu, as well. The restaurant is not geared towards vegetarians (or people with other special dietary needs), but there are some meatless items (e.g. many of the omelettes, the greek salad, as well as some of the many side orders). There is homemade chili, but it might not be vegetarian. Anyways, I eventually decided on the plain corned beef sandwich ($6.25). There is a deluxe option, which is $1 extra and includes french fries instead of chips. The plain option includes a cup of soup, pickles, and potato chips. The sandwich was served warm, and was very tasty. I chose the tomato macaroni soup (the other one was cream of potato), and that was very good as well. Just keep in mind that when the menu says "cup of soup", it is actually about 6-8 ounces of soup - the portion sizes are actually reasonable here. The service was decent, but when I wanted to pay, there was no one who noticed that I had my credit card out. The servers and owners were busy talking to each other, and it took at least three minutes for someone to notice that I was done eating (despite looking directly at them). Overall, this is a good place to eat. The food is inexpensive (especially for lunch - my bill including tax and tip was under $8), and the food is good. The service could be improved upon, but its still decent. If the staff get a little more attentive, then I will definitely give this restaurant 5 stars. Overall: 4 stars/5 read more

Went here for late lunch wife my wife. I had the club sandwich which was huge and delish. The wife had the fried cod special which featured beer battered fresh cod. It was the best fish fry she has had in this county by far. Attentive service. We will be back for sure. read more

Haven't been in there for a while so decided to try it again for breakfast.... The staff was very pleasant... But sadly we were not impressed with the rest... Bacon was cold and the strips were small, the coffee was way to strong ... It took 3 creams to bring it to drinkable. And isn't breakfast about the coffee? We would have given it 2 stars but the bill was $24 dollars.... While that's not real expensive, one can get much better food at many places for that money ... Which brought us to the one star rating. Sad ... I would rather give my money to the small town business but in this case... Not anymore. read more

My girl friend and I were on our way home to her house from Lake Geneva. We stopped here for lunch. Our food was very good and the service was excellent! It was like a delicious & elegant mom & pop place with homemade food. We are glad we stopped by here to eat in this little town called Marango! It's easy to find on Illinois U. S 23. This place is amazing. Their strawberry crepes are the bomb. By far one of the best strawberry crepes I've ever had. Their pancakes are cooked to perfection and their bacon egg and cheese bagel is absolutely scrumptious. The chicken crisper wrap... don't even get me started. Came in a week or so ago after work and it was a great choice. I ordered a burger and fries. The burger was pretty damn good. Very fresh veggies and the fries were golden and delicious. Definitely will be back a few more times when I'm in the Marengo area. Excited to try something new but unsure if I will be able to after how good the burger was! read more

Went there for many years a loyal customer. After waiting too long finally had enough of their waitresses. They just kept getting worse and worse. They gossip about their own customers relentlessly and have bad attitudes. One was so lazy when I ordered a bowl of cereal she just brought the box to me with it unopened. (this happen on 2 occasions actually, the first time I chose not to let it go). I had to explain to her that I'm battling cancer and don't have full use of my left arm to open it. I mean, really? Should I have to explain that to a server? That was it for me. The place is clean, but the food is average at best and the waitresses keep getting worse and don't care about their customers or their reputations and I don't think the owners care about the attitudes of there employees. To top it off Now they have sleazy video gambling machines in the restaurant like your at a bar! Gambling machines in a restaurant? Who wants to be around some local scum gambling when your eating breakfast? Bad idea. Stopped going there in 2020 and won't ever be back. Dino's is a much better experience. read more
