Absolutely amazing little place!! I am so mad at myself for not finding out about it earlier. The owners are some of the nicest people I have met and had the biggest smile on their face the whole time I was there. I loved chatting with them and learning more about their small business. As soon as you walk in, you feel like you're in good company and the restaurant is clean and has a homey atmosphere. I usually like to support small local businesses, but unfortunately, my recent visit here was disappointing. My cousins and I (party of 11; ages between 3-21) came in ready to enjoy a meal, but the cashier's rude and unprofessional attitude ruined the experience from the start. One of my cousins was already walking over to throw out his drink when the cashier unnecessarily told him to "go throw it away then" -- even though he clearly was already doing it. She rolled her eyes and made us feel like we were a problem just for being there. Because of how unwelcome we felt, we decided to take our food to go instead of dining in. When we told the cashier we'd like to switch it to takeout, she got visibly annoyed and frustrated just because she had to transfer the food into a to-go box. Again, completely unnecessary attitude. We came in hoping for good food and a good time, but we left feeling disrespected and uncomfortable. Won't be coming back. read more

As a food enthusiast , I was absolutely delighted with the service and food at Flatlanders. I ordered the chicken pesto panini and my wife got the turkey bacon ranch wrap. Both meals were delicious and extremely flavorful. My wife especially enjoyed the complimentary pickle and homemade chips. Only complaint is I wish the rewards system was much better. Food was good as always but the cashier was very rude. When we were approaching I was looking for a garbage to throw away a drink I was drinking prior she saw me and said no outside drinks and I said I know I was going to throw it away and she said " do it then". Then we asked if there was more seating to see if we could combine tables then she gave us attitude with her hand. So after that we felt uncomfortable eating there so we asked if we could take it to go. She turned around and slammed the back counter. Then we got our food and left. Flatlanders came to Marengo when I was a teen and it was an instant hit with my mother and I. We regularly got their turkey bacon ranch wrap and it was a delight especially when fresh; the ultimate grilled cheese was a second favorite go to but the CHIPS, goodness, I love how thick they were and an excellent amount of crunch. I only dined in a handful of times but they were always patient and helpful, and the atmosphere had plenty of things to keep my wandering eye busy while I waited for the food. No fountain drinks :( Service isn't very friendly but you order at the counter so it doesn't matter too much. I'm a new Marengo resident and strongly prefer to support local and family-owned businesses. My wife and I came across this place several months ago and enjoyed the food at our first visit. We returned there once thereafter and I went alone another time. While the food - especially the soups - have been excellent at every visit, the personnel are not at all friendly. I tried to strike up a conversation a few times but barely received a reply. Despite the good food quality, I won't return because of the employees' (owners'?) poor attitudes. A shame! read more

This place has some really good sandwiches that are made fresh to order. French fries are made fresh as well, however, depending on who serves them to you, you receive a good portion or hardly any. CONSISTENCY lacks greatly! Decor is simple, quaint, comfortable. Desserts are delicious; my personal favorite is the RASPBERRY bars. I have driven there just for dessert-oh my GOD so so AWESOME!! Sadly, they don't serve them every day. My biggest issue with this place is the two people behind the counter; father and daughter I believe, they never smile, and really do not show any friendliness or appreciation for my patronage. I am not saying they are bad, or mean, or rude!! They are VOID of any emotion. If I owned a business I would at least say hello, thanks, thank you, take care, good day, good bye, come again... but these two have never said anything close.
