My wife and I have been trying to get to 1776 for a few years now and this past weekend we finally made it to the restaurant. We arrived at 6:55 pm for our reservations at 7pm and we were told our table is not quite ready but we can go hang out at the bar while they finish up our table. This was fine because I was looking to get a few drinks into me before dinner. We went to the bar and sat near the corner and we were immediately greeted by the bartender. We ordered our drinks and hung out at the bar and it took 20 mins additionally for us to get seated at our table. Again, this was fine because we were not in a rush but I can see someone who is tight on time may get annoyed with this. We get sat in our seat and we look over the menu. I went with the short ribs and my wife went with the chicken with the mushroom gravy sauce. My meal was pretty good and delicious. My wife was not a fan of her meal. She compared the gravy to that out of a can and it was cold. She was not happy! I was glad we stopped by but for the price we'd probaly try a different place next time. read more

We stopped here as a last minute dinner with some friends. First time at a farm to table restaurant. We had Darcy who could not have been better. She really guided us with our order. Starting with Octopus, crab cakes and bacon wrapped dates. All were excellent. Then my husband and I split a salad. A perfect choice the salad was really large and very flavorful, with beets and grapefruit. Yum! He had the pork with Pepitas and sweet potatoes. Excellent! I had salmon with shredded Brussel sprouts. Nicely cooked ! We all tried the desserts... each one was better than the other. Lovely atmosphere. Even with a fairly large crowd we could have a nice conversation. read more

We have not been to 1776 in some time and we were looking forward to enjoying what has always been very good food with some friends. When we went to make the reservation it required a $25 deposit along with your credit card information to charge you. This is something I was unwilling to share or do to make a reservation locally. I am not sure where 1776 gets off charging a $25 deposit for a reservation. Also, the reservation was for a Thursday night, hardly prime time. After all it is Crystal Lake IL, not downtown Chicago where people are notorious at making several reservations and not showing up. I find it hard to believe they have an issue like that in the burbs. Are there any other local suburban restaurants requiring a $25 deposit??? Sadly to say we will not be going to 1776 until they change their reservation policy. Our group of friends also agree with our decision. Instead we dined at Region in Barrington and had a wonderful meal! read more

Was excited to try this gluten-free restaurant (the whole restaurant!), options for me are somewhat limited at all restaurants, and was honestly not expecting much...Was blown away! The indoor areas were just beautiful, clean and beautiful bathrooms, the food was A-MAZING, the drinks were great, and our server Lauren was fantastic. They including baffling on their ceilings in their decor, which made it quiet and very easy to talk even with music on in the background. Super cute outdoor area with a camper serving drinks outside, which is where I'll be sitting next time I go, which will be soon! Not super-cheap, but this place was just fantastic! I wanted to love this place so bad. I've heard about this place pretty much my whole life, but I've never been, so when some friends were in town, we made an excuse to finally give it a try. I'm gluten free now, so their gluten free kitchen was an insane bonus that I was not expecting. It's honestly nerve wreaking to try new restaurants now for fear I'll get sick and it was a relief to not have to worry here. The service was absolutely, over the top incredible. I cannot express this point enough. So it comes down to the food. I was so excited to try everything I could on the menu. The only standouts were the cheese curds (which aren't hard to nail), the gluten free bread (in the world of gluten-free breads, I would travel 100 miles to eat this again) and the apple fritters. Everything else we tried - shrimp appetizer, lamb shanks, fig pizza special, carrot steaks and both soups - were completely lack luster. The presentation was good, but the flavor was lacking on all. I wanted so bad to love it all but it just wasn't there for me - so disappointing :( I'd give this place another try, everyone speaks so highly of it, but we just did not have that experience at all. We came here to celebrate birthday, and the birthday guest is celiac. So, this is a perfect place for the guest because 1776 restaurant is a 100% gluten free kitchen and does not compromise taste! The menu is seasonal to have the freshest gradients. We started with fried chicken thigh meat on a corn cake. The fried chicken was crispy and flavorful. Then we had cream of mushroom soup topped with mushroom chips. We had duck breast (prepared perfectly) and barramundi (crispy skin and cooked just about right on the meat) as our entrees. We had their seasonal dessert of the upside down apple cake. Every bite was delicious and incorporated nicely with some seasonal ingredients. Best of all, you will forget that you have to avoid gluten, because everything was prepared thoughtfully delicious. This restaurant also offers an extensive wine list. Absolutely loved everything about this restaurant. Dining is elegant, service is mindful of all allergies. Being an all gluten free restaurant is AMAZING to say the least. Wine selection is long so choose wisely. The service was excellent, our server was personable and I felt like she understood the struggle of eating at a restaurant with a gluten intolerance/ celiacs disease. An amazing dinner with quite the selection to choose. The menu changes seasonally which is awesome because you can come back later in the year and they will serve different things. We came here for our anniversary dinner on a busy weekend night, and luckily we had made a reservation as the restaurant was busy. The parking lot can be full and hard to find parking, we got lucky and we're able to find parking. Others we noticed had to look for parking on the streets close by. The interior design is nice, but we noticed the restaurant can get a bit loud. All the staff were great and the food came out quickly. For a reservation, the dining takes about 90 minutes. My favorite part of the meal was actually dessert with the apple fritters paired with dairy free custard. We enjoyed our entrees, however for my rainbow trout I had to be careful several times as the dish had many of the fish bones present. The total for two people with drinks and a three course meal came out to about $120. read more

Went here with the wife last week after our first time like 25 years ago back then we really didnt care for it as it was a wild game type restaurant. But this time it was great , its all gluten free but you really cant tell except for the desserts they were a little dry to our liking , but we did really enjoy the crab cakes they were delicious I had a melon type salad with a hot honey and almonds that was surprisingly delicious some really great melons. My wife had the wild rice mushroom soup she said it was very good . I ended up getting the special a a braised short rib and it was amazing my wife had the pork tenderloin and she said it was fantastic which it was very good(I tasted it) but the special short ribs were a better choice in my mind. We finally had dessert to go and it was very good but just a tad too dry for me. We had reservations but we thought they'd were for 5:30. And they had it marked down as 6:30 so we ate at the bar. We have been wanting to support 1776 restaurant and finally made a special night by ordering take out for the family. The staff was super helpful while ordering since we had some questions being that we are vegetarian. It was nice that everything is made to order and had customized a few things and the team member even double checked with the chef since one of the dishes had carrot bacon... which was thinly sliced carrot marinated and prepared to be like a bacon taste.. Pick up was very smooth and the team comes out tor the car with your order when you pull up. They were super nice and very appreciative of supporting 1776. We had a number of items on the order and here was some of the highlights: Brussel Sprouts- loved these with our bacon... prepared just right Butternut Squash Nosh - a roasted squash with an amazing mix of ground nuts ( substituted for bacon) loved this ... simple but cooked just right! Cocktails- we got uncles lemonade which was good but really enjoyed the 76er smash- a smooth old forester 76 whiskey drink which OMG ... so good... and I would highly recommend the 76er Protein bowl- I was excited about this one but it was a little bland...but liked the squash and beets. I guess on a protein level I thing the name is a little deceiving. Not bad and appreciate catering to us vegetarians... just was okay. Marinated Tofu or something would be nice. Mac N Cheese - this was heavenly... loved the blend of cheese and just tasted great on a chilly winter day Monk Fish- this was decent. The fish was cooked nicely I was not a fan of the tarragon aioli it's was a bit strong. The mushrooms were okay but messed with my taste with the fish. Glad I tried it but was not what I was thinking it would be like. Desserts- peanut butter pie ... wow that was amazing . Perfect balance of chocolate, peanut butter and just tremendous... next we tried the banana pie which I also really enjoy.... either were 10 out of 10s. Overall - we enjoyed our dinner and was a great meal. 1776 chefs are always known for excellent quality ingredients and attention to detail. Was pleased and was nice to have such great quality food safely at home. Unlike some local restaurants who feel they need to go against the orders to place guests and staff at risk by opening ... I am very impressed that 1776 been doing all they can to follow the guideline and take the Heath crises seriously... it is admirable and applaud the team for staying strong. Definitely support 1776 restaurant ... the food is amazing and have to support a local business like them to do what's right and operate safely. read more

Good food , confusing as to what the objective of this establishment is given the chain of verbal communication we were provided during our first time to this lovely establishment. Walked into bar to await our party , the bartender greeted us with , as you can see we are really busy. When we were seated with our group for the reservation we had made weeks ago , our server greeted us stating , so you know we are booked tonight . Ok ? Then after dinner our server stated , you have 15 minutes left on your Table . Goodness, both of our checks totaled to over $400, seemed a bit like a Portillos shuffle . Nonetheless, great food , I will say that my husband wanted to order the filet but asked if he could have it with different sides and our server says , no unless you have an allergy . Fun read more

Then we were told we had to move or leave because of their 90 minute limit which they didn't tell us about until the end. We weren't seated on time and all delays were on them. My boyfriend and I came here for our anniversary this past weekend for the first time. Our waitress Kristy was AMAZING! She was so friendly and bubbly it really made us feel welcome. She helped us through the menu, suggesting drinks and entrées to have. She went above and beyond to make sure we were having a good night and perfect first experience. The food was delicious. We got the duck breast and the hanger steak. Both were incredible, done to perfection. It was my first time having duck and honestly blew it out of the water for me, it is definitely a favorite meal now. The ambiance was very relaxing and inviting. This restaurant is a joke. Incredibly overpriced. Appetizers at $10 a plate that were barely portions for 1. Service was friendly but slow. It took them until 45+ minutes into seating to get our food orders (after a waitress asked us if we wanted to order more appetizers, and we had to ask if we could order entrees) and then they inform us when we asked about drink refills that there's no refills on fountain drinks. I'm waiting 45 mins to order then 30 more mins for the food to come out and I can't get another Diet Coke? The truffle fries had next to zero truffle flavor and only one small slice of cheese. The tomahawk pork chop tasted like they simply dusted it with lawry's seasoning salt and it was under seasoned at that. (And what restaurant asks what temp to cook pork to?!) I tried a bit of the short rib ordered by one of the others in my party, and while cooked well to tenderness, I found it under flavored considering the menu said it was served with kimchi it had almost no flavor at all. My dad had the dry aged strip steak special... he described it as chewy and not tender. My brother described the flatbread as flavorless and bland, and began grousing that he'd rather have gone to White Castle. We came here because my sister eats gluten free and raved about this place, but either her taste buds are completely broken or this place had an extremely off night. Either way, never coming back here again. We are leaving hungry, significantly poorer (we had a party of 9, so they even added a 18% gratuity!) and ... the only way I can describe my post meal experience here is extremely utterly disappointed. read more

We had a reservation  for 6 and arrived promptly on time and were sat right away.  Once we were sat, our waitress took our drink orders right away and brought them out. We sat around looking at the menu for too long.  After about 35 minutes, the server actually came and acknowledged us for the first time after getting us our drinks.  She told us the specials and asked if we wanted any appetizers.  We ordered two orders of cheese curds and one order of the truffle fries.  The cheese curds came in a small portion for the price and were flooded in sauce that didn't add much flavor.  The truffle fries had no truffle flavor and had a single curl of cheese on top.  We weren't impressed after the apps but weren't super angry yet. We had finished the apps and were just sitting chatting for quite some time.  Then we had an employee come to our table and ask us if we wanted to order some more apps, to which we replied that we would like to order dinner.  This was over 50 minutes after we had sat down.  I had to ASK to order after 50 minutes.  All while our waitress spent more than ample time with a few other tables of 2.  While I understand parties of 9 can be daunting, but the service we received was absolutely horrible. We ordered and waited some more.  After being in the restaurant for over one hour and twenty minutes, before we even recieved food, I asked our waitress if we could get some drink refills on our soft drinks, to which she responded they were not free and she ran off.  She kept us waiting for over 45 minutes with our drinks in front of us, without food, and refused to get us refills on our soft drinks. When we first arrived, there were 4  other tables sat and the longer we were there, the more tables that were sat, until the entire restaurant was packed before we even got our food.  Once we received our food, a few of the dishes were mediocre at best to downright bad at worst.  My boyfriend ordered the pork chop, and he said it tasted like it had Lowry's season salt sprinkled on it, and it was underseasoned at that.  The apple bacon chutney was underneath everything and was good but hidden and difficult to get to.  I had the flank steak.  It was nothing special, bordering on flavorless.  The mashed potatoes were buried under the steak and were mediocre at best but the best thing on the plate.  The butternut squash was very undercooked to the point it was crunchy. My father in law had the special, a dry aged strip steak and he said his was tough, chewy, and cold, and the brocolini was bearly cooked and almost inedibly crunchy.  We had two kids in our party and they said the corn dogs and chicken strips were "really yummy!"  The person who had been there previously said that they had never received such horrible service there previously and that this was a complete anomaly. Our experience was so horrible, that we will never be back.  Our waitress guaranteed that.  Had service been at least good or great, the underseasoned, bland food could have been overlooked.  But I'm not going to pay over $60 per person for frankly bad food and worse service. read more

We came here a while ago for a double date and had a nice meal. We made a reservation but still had a bit of a wait when we got to the restaurant. We were seated in a slightly cramped area but it was fine for the 4 of us. Our waitress was very pleasant and attentive. She wasn't familiar with the bourbon/whiskey selection when we had questions but was knowledgeable about the food. We ordered the venison ,Mushroom flatbread/pizza, a mocktail, the Stagg Jr and the Midwinter Nights Dram. The venison was cooked perfectly. Very flavorful and probably the best dish on the table. My mushroom pizza was good but very heavy after a slice or two. The mocktails were great! It was nice to get a cocktail experience when I couldn't have alcohol. Overall the experience was positive even with a few kinks here and there. I would like to come back in the future and see what other seasonal items they have on the menu. read more

The flatbread was okay, flavor was good but it came out warm, pretty much cold. Service was terrible. Got attitude from all bartenders. We saw other customers getting treated better then us. Other customers got the run down on food specials & we didn't even get asked if we wanted a menu. We were ready to spend a decent amount of money (considering every entree is $30) but only got the appetizer & one round of drinks. Have not been in years and was pleasantly surprised. Filet and scallops were cooked to perfection and so tasty. Will definitely go back for that! Artichoke appetizer was also delicious. The mushroom soup was so good I ordered two quarts to go home with us. Then we had the white chocolate mousse with raspberry sauce for dessert. Yum! Our server was excellent as well. Very disappointed. We had looked up the menu on yelp, and when we got there, it was totally different. The waitress says they change it quarterly but obviously they didn't change it on yelp. Ordered a bloody Mary and was told they don't make them. Had a very small Coke for $2.50 and was told no free refills. The meal itself was mediocre. The waitress was very accommodating and apologetic about my concerns. What is frustrating is they do not answer their phone that I could've asked questions. Everything is automated.
