Small Business Spotlight @rustic21bistro I made my way back over to Southside Blvd to check back in and try some of the new additions to their already eclectic delicious menu. As usual, I was greeted with a smile and welcoming arms by Owners Chef Demarco and Samira Demarco These are some of the nicest and most genuine people you'll ever want to meet and they truly deserve all of the success and support that is sure to come to them. The Food is high on my list of must-try items in Jacksonville! Thursday I was privileged to be served a few of their Appetizers along with the Main Course I came in for which was the Brazilian Lasagna Bolognese and they did not disappoint!! But one of the items that stuck out as a surprise was the Dadinho De Tapioca which was both savory & sweet little squares of lightly crispy Tapioca blended with Parmesan & Queijo (Brazilian cheese) The Chicken Pasteles were also a pleasant light appetizer with a delicious filling that paired well with everything else. I've been here 3 separate times. First time was for Valentine's dinner. We really enjoyed their special menu that day. Everything was awesome! We love everything about the service, ambiance and aesthetics. It's a quaint spot and everything was delicious the first 2 times I came. It's always a treat to have the head chef/owner come out and talk to everyone. My last time going, (last night). Food was off and the owner was not there. Mashed potatoes were cold! Had to return that back! I asked the waiter if the lasagna has a lot of beef and he said yes. Lies!! It was a kids size portion of meat. However, the taste is amazing! Be careful eating it- it's lava hot but I won't order it again; Not enough protein. I have also had over time their shrimp stew dish and their picana steak- delicious flavor but a little chewy. Everything was on point... we loved every thing we ordered (except the fried pork belly, which I liked but didn't love I started the meal with a black bean soup. I never knew I'd write about black bean soup ever in my life but here I am raving about it. Not really a big fan of BB but this soup made me change my mind. I ordered the fried pork belly appetizer as my main meal. I like my pork belly to be crispy on the outside but juicy and tender on the inside, just like my grandma's lechon kawali, a Filipino staple. That's why I said I only liked it and not loved it My husband's Picanha steak sirloin was so juicy , savory and yummy that I didn't decline his offer for me to eat half . It had the perfect marbling, I've never had sirloin this good in my life. I usually order a ribeye when I order steak but this has more marbling than the Ruth's chris' ribeye. One of my pet peeves when we order steaks in restaurants is the fact that some of them use phosphates to make the meat tender instead of buying the best cuts of meat and cooking to perfection. This restaurant obviously knows how to pick steaks; the price is worth it We ordered the trilogy dessert Panacottas made with berries syrup, yellow fruits and chocolate fudge. We originally planned on splitting it but it was so good that I told my husband to order his own dessert, which made our server chuckle. It was so creamy with bursts of different exhilarating flavors and not too sweet. This was probably my favorite item I tried We also Petit Gateau de Dulce de Leche w/ pecan ice cream. It was also really good but I liked the trilogy more Our server made a few mistakes but he was so nice and friendly that we genuinely didn't mind and we just shrugged it off The ambiance was perfect for a date night or a night out with friends or coworkers. There were some kids in there but I'd recommend not bringing young unruly kids in there. It's perfectly fine if your kids can behave We will definitely be back for another date night. Entrees we had: Bobó de Camarão -Brazilian Shrimp Stew, mashed yuca, coconut milk, ginger, cilantro, white rice - it was very good, fresh juicy shrimp, just the way I like it. Picanha Top Sirloin: Picanha served with seasoned yuca flour, tomato relish, tad bit over cooked, sides were good but the steak was a bit dried. Costela Bovina: Braised short ribs with Madeira sauce served with Parmesan Risotto. Best risotto I've had in a long time, creamy and melt in your mouth. Short ribs were juicy and so flavorful. The chef came out to greet us and brought me a birthday cake, such a kind gesture. Came here for dinner with my husband and MIL. We ordered the pork belly appetizer - crispy, moist, and tender. The Bolinho de Bacalhau (cod croquettes; $11) appetizer was pleasant, but not something I'd order again. My short ribs with risotto was good, though the most expensive item on the menu at $35. It's hard to go wrong with meat you can cut with a fork and cheesy risotto. The Petit Gateau de Dulce de Leche was tasty. It's smaller than most desserts (though it came with a scoop of ice cream), so suitable for one if you've saved some room in your stomach ($11.50). Other dishes I tasted seemed good too: I liked the very tender Stroganoff, the picanha steak had good flavor, and the Torresmo (crispy pork belly) was very tasty (but the opposite of healthy: mostly skin and fat, well fried); the fried banana got mixed reactions, however: I'd like it as a dessert (it's on the sides list and only $4), but my wife preferred the fried sweet plantains she had at another restaurant recently. The setting was pretty nice, though the locks on the bathroom doors are unintuitive: I didn't know if I was locking the door or not, and my wife independently reported the same. Service was good: warm and friendly. I like this place, consider it a good value, and hope to return, though I'd try different dishes next time. read more

We had THE BEST dinner and service at Rustic 21 last night. The restaurant is just lovely, every dish was delicious and presented beautifully. I always think a business tells you how they value you, by the condition of their bathroom. We all agree this is the prettiest bathroom in town. We had Burratta, pork belly, schnitzel, salmon risotto, chicken stroganoff and the shrimp dish. Every detail was attended to. Service was horrible. My husband and I had to get up and find our server for drinks or things we needed at least 2x. Server forgot to bring kids drinks 3x. He put our order in late. I know this because 15-20 Minutes after we put it in he came up to us to ask us what it was again that we had ordered. We were the first to arrive but so many people who came in well after us got their food much sooner. We have 2 toddlers so if you're a parent you know that there is a limited amount of time before they loose their sh*t. Food was great!! I would give 4 stars for the food but honestly the service was bad enough to ruin the entire meal. Just excuses given when asked what the issue was. This could have been avoided had the server own up to his mistake and tell the chef to rush the order. I know he did not ask to rush it because the chef/owner came out to speak with me and he said I ordered 20 minutes ago in which I had to correct him that his server forgot to put it in and put it in late. Super lame of the owner and the server to be honest. Much better ways to of handled this which is why I'm leaving a review. I normally don't leave reviews but man. This is a small place that sits maybe 30 at a time so go early or make a reservation. It filled up fast when we went. The Burrata was out of this world. The only downfall is that you will need more bread. They provide four, I would request 6-8. I wanted to take my husband out for father's day, and we had friends that had recommended this restaurant to us, as well as having catered from them. I was able to make a reservation online for the first available time, which was 11:30 am. It was easy to find via GPS, and there was plenty of parking in the lot of the shopping center. We were able to walk in and be seated immediately. They have plenty of seating for a small area, and it is beautifully decorated. They were offering Father's Day specials, in addition to their normal menu. I chose the lasagna, which came recommended by our friends, and my husband and mother in law chose the picanha with yucca fries and rice. The food came out quickly and was hot. The lasagna was a large portion, enough for two people to share. The steaks came out in decent portions, and there were plenty of rice and yucca fries. My son seemed to enjoy the rice. The food here is as creative, the ingredients as fresh, the cooking as well executed and the service as friendly as a big city restaurant. In our case, Yelp double-booked us meaning we had to return the next day. It was definitely worth the wait. And the owner and staff went out of their way to make things right even though it was not their fault. We definitely plan to add this to our rotation of local favorites.
