It was the perfect pick - the whole staff is friendly and took great care, the ambience is intimate and cozy (and it was packed! But we could still hear each other and felt very comfortable), and that's not even getting to the food. The food. THE FOOD. the menu is small which tells me they know exactly what they're doing with each dish - and this was proved absolutely correct. Pão de queijo - I could've eaten the order of 6 by myself and then asked for more they were so warm and chewy and delicious. The short rib and risotto - Perfection. There's nothing else to say because it just was that. The Picanha top sirloin with bacon and egg fried rice, yuca, and chimichurri - WOW! Even the n/a berry breeze mocktail was a delight! Really enjoyed dinner here! It's located in a little strip mall off southside Blvd, not a huge restaurant but decorated very nice! Our server was nice but it was a little hard to communicate being english was not his first language but hey that means the food is authentic right! Everything we got was delicious!! The drink was good it got better as it melted and the sugar dissolves into the drink. I would say my favorite things were the Shrimp stew in a flavorful coconut sauce, so good! Went here because my wife really wanted to try it on our 24th wedding anniversary, and I was determined to make it a very positive experience for her sake. A very small shop, and it appeared there was only one server. I later noticed that the hostess also helped out as a server. I went out of my way to be pleasant and supportive of our server because....thats just what one does to be reasonable and supportive of a short-staffed server. But I must note that the three times we tried to get their attention we weren't noticed, and once we were ignored when the server was behind the bar, drinking a soft drink. I realize that servers need a break because they work very hard, but I expected they would come to our table after their break because I know they saw me trying to get their attention. But that didn't happen. It took nearly 20 minutes to get our server's attention to make a request for a dessert menu. The food: The food itself was unremarkable. I ordered the chicken stroganoff from the menu, only to be told that wasn't available, beef stroganoff only. My wife ordered the picanha, cooked medium. Outwardly, the steak was perfectly cooked, but it was just one tough, chewy piece of meat. The stroganoff was delicious, but I will admit the beef was quite tough and chewy. To sum up, our visit - the food and the service - was unremarkable. It was difficult to get our server's attention, but the place was busy and the floor understaffed. The quality of the beef in the dishes we ordered was (and I'm being kind here) unremarkable. I've noted a number of harsh reviews over this shop, and the owner's replies. So, Owner - I'm not giving you a bad review. I think your service staff was doing their best despite being short-staffed, and they were most pleasant when we COULD get their attention. The food simply wasn't that good. I'd suggest cooking your steaks sous vide to the varying levels of doneness and then a quick grilling to achieve the Maillard effect. This will make the beef more tender. I believe in fully supporting local Jacksonville business owners. I believe we supported your business the day we visited by not causing a ruckus and by tipping the server well. But I have to end this review by saying our experience at your shop was underwhelming. While we most likely won't visit again, I DO wish the owner all possible success for the future. Understand, though, that our experience at your shop was in keeping with a tiny shop in a strip mall. Sorry, but your offerings felt like "minimal effort" foods. read more

It was my turn to surprise hubby with a new spot. I chose Rustic 21 Bistro because the Yelp reviews were strong and the menu looked unique. We arrived for dinner and the atmosphere was so welcoming. I loved the decor! We started with drinks and an appetizer. Hubby ordered an intuition beer, I ordered a Bellini which was fruity and refreshing. We shared the escondidinho de carne seca - a Brazilian style shepherd's pie. Very unique and yummy. I loved the mashed yuca and baked crust on top! The chef also gave us a little bowl of cauliflower soup to try on the house. Very creamy and smooth with a mild cauliflower taste. For our entrees, hubby ordered the costela bovina con risotto de parmesão - braised short rib with Parmesan risotto. He loved this dish! The short rib was braised well and so flavorful. The Parmesan risotto was nutty and creamy. Really a great combination. I ordered the feijoada - Brazilian black bean stew. It came with traditional Brazilian accompaniments - fried banana, sautéed greens, white rice, pork rind, fried yuca, farofa, pico de gallo and an orange slice. This was an outstanding meal! Everything worked so well together. The stew had chunks beef and pork sausage that added so much flavor. I loved the farofa - toasted yuca flour, a must try item! I would totally order this again. For dessert, the petit gateau de doce de leite com sorvete de nozes - dulce de leche cake with pecan ice cream. Simply amazing, not overly sweet. It was just the right size to share after our yummy meal. The service was spectacular! Our server was very attentive. The chef came out to check on us and chat a bit. This place is very cute. Walking in, it feels like you're in a very charming atmosphere to have a good dinner. When we arrived, there was only one other person there but things picked up shortly after we begin looking at the menu. Our waiter was very nice, but I think he was the only waiter for the place. Therefore, things moved slowly. We ordered two appetizers - the black bean soup and the chicken and cheese pastries. The pastry was excellent. It was crisp and flaky on the outside, and the chicken was shredded and flavorful inside. The black bean soup was just OK. It lacked the flavor that I was expecting and it was a bit watery. It needed some texture and perhaps a fresh component on top. For the entrée, I knew I wanted steak. I was between the picanha and the short rib. After looking at reviews, I decided to go with a short rib, and it did not disappoint. It was tender and flavorful, and the Madeira sauce was just enough on top. The risotto was also good but the amount was not proportional to the beef. I assumed that the cheese in the risotto was mixed with something more than parmesan given the color of it. I thought $35 was a bit high for this dish given the size of the meat. The special was fried chicken cutlets on top of penne pasta. My dining partner really enjoyed that. The chicken looked very nicely fried. We enjoyed this place in general and I really appreciated that they showcased the Italian and German influence on Brazilian culture and food. As a Brazilian immigrant I crave authentic Brazilian food that I can share with my American friends. Rustic 21Bistro delivered it all . From the bolinhos de Bacalhau (one of the best I have had in a while ) , pastéis to the Bobo de Camarão , the Short Ribs with Risotto, which of course was enjoyed while sipping a tangerine caipirinha (you got to try !). We ended our meal with some delicious Cocada de forno a Petit Gateau De Dulce De Leche both warmed and served with a scoop of ice cream and an espresso coffee. Their prices were reasonable and portions were generous. I can't finish without also complementing the ambience which was inviting, modern , sophisticated yet not pretentious. The pears are grilled to a perfect ripeness. One tried the Brie salad, large amount of Brie topped with pepper jelly and dressed spring mix. Last of us had their version of the croque monsieur - beautiful béchamel sauce and lovely overall flavor of sandwich. Also tried salted cod fritters with their house made tartar - which was more of a a sauce. Plenty of parking. Definitely worth a stop in. Good value and quality of food in lovely setting. They are in a strip center near Beach Blvd. The restaurant is Brazilian-inspired cuisine and the bistro is very charming inside with wonderful music and decor. We ordered the Burrata as a starter and it was delicious! For our main - Top Sirloin with fried yuca (not a fan!), biro biro rice & salsa! It was filled with flavor - but the steak was a bit tough! We were hungry and the Town Center was a pre-holiday blur of traffic so up to Southside Blvd we went. Yelp suggested this lovely gem so we gave it a go. Super cute, spotlessly clean and somewhat elegant even, a lovely surprise tucked into a strip mall. Fresh flowers on the tables is such a simple lovely touch. We both got the new soup to try - pumpkin blue cheese. It was so good and so filling we had to get our sandwiches to go. The balance of flavors and slight texture was superb.
