OK, where to start. Rumi's is tucked away between an IHOP and a Mellow Mushroom, so finding it is a little tricky at first. If you aren't going in the direction of 285, then you'll probably miss it since the sign is so small. However, that's not all-bad since they only have valet parking. If you don't mind walking half a block, you can save yourself $5-$10 by parking at on of the other places on the same side of the street. Otherwise, if you're going in a large group CARPOOL. Miser-ing aside, the valets were quick and attentive, plus it's only a $2 fee (without tip- don't be a scrooge).
After entering, you'll find that the ceilings have been left open, but you almost don't notice because the eye-level decor is very nice. There's even a fountain (shaped like a large vase) in the middle of it all. The bar was clean and simple. It was clearly designed to be able to handle a large amount of individuals, but the amount of alcohol on display leads one to believe otherwise. However, I only ordered a couple glasses of wine to go with dinner, so let's just leave anything to do with drinks out of this aside from surface-looks.
I was able to make a reservation for 7:00 PM at 2:15 PM on the same day (Sunday). I even made a request through OpenTable (an app that lets you make reservations) that there be a vase placed on our table for flowers I'd brought for my date. However, once I entered, the place was PACKED. So packed, in fact (light rhyming never hurt anyone), that it was kind of difficult to hear my date sometimes due to the roar of people. Initially, when I gave my name, they took me to a table of 4 strangers and then looked confusedly at the waitress serving them, asking her about me and my table and their table. After that, the hostess took me back to the front, checked my reservation again, and passed me off to our waitress. The waitress brought me to my seat, but there was no vase, so I requested one- which she said they didn't have, but that she would look for something that would work (she brought a wine chilling stand), which was good improvisation. I managed to get the flowers arranged before my date arrived.
Note: I really think they need to consider installing some noise dampeners in the ceiling space.
The first thing served were some complimentary herbs, walnuts, radishes, green olives, and pita bread. We didn't even touch them, but they looked very fresh (this coming from someone who gardens and often eats directly off of the plant).
We ordered our food and wine at the same time, but they brought the wine well in advance of the dishes. My date ordered the roasted salmon and ordered the lamb kabobs (medium rare plus). My date took one bite of the salmon and I saw a look fall across her face... When I asked, she said she didn't like it at all. So, I offered her some of m lamb kabob so she could check and see if the food (in general) was to her liking. She said that the lamb was good, so we asked our waitress if we could please order something else. The waitress said yes, then took her plate away.
Note: I still paid for the $30 roasted salmon that no one ate. :(
My date ordered the chicken barg (chicken's always a safe bet) and she enjoyed them this time. Either way, when we talked about it later, she said that the salmon didn't taste like the fish, itself, was bad, but that she just did not like the flavor of the roasted salmon. I imagine that it was the way it was cooked that threw her off. My lamb kabobs were delicious, perfectly seasoned and cooked (again, medium rare plus; this means not medium rare, but not medium, just a little over medium rare), tender, juicy, and flavorful! The rice that came with the kabobs was fine, but it wasn't anything special- just white basmati rice with lentils and a little saffron rice on top (I asked them not to put raisins in my rice). I get that they are trying to add another dimension to the dish, but it just doesn't need it.
Finally, we ordered some desserts: hazelnut tart and a single scoop of the persian ice cream. The had me at "it's cardamom ice cream with saffron and rose water plus pistachios" on the Persian ice cream. I LOVE rose flavor in ice cream. It's actually a big deal in India and Thailand- they even call rose water "India's Summer Drink of Choice". May date offered me some of her hazelnut tart, but I just wasn't feeling the hazelnut. I offered her some of the Persian ice cream and after she took a bite, she stopped for a beat. Yes people, it's that good because it's that different!
Overall, 4.5/5. They took away the salmon and still charged me for it. That's a $30 plate that I can only assume that they tossed in the trash. They could have at least put it into a box if they were going to do that. I don't like wasting money. However, actual service receives a 5, flavor of the different foods receives a 5, price receives a 4 (so pricey!), and atmosphere receives a 4.
