Over the past decade, Rumi's Kitchen has grown into an Atlanta staple for Persian cuisine. I have to agree with what many others have said. Rumi's serves some of the best Persian food I've tasted. The restaurant is located just OTP (outside the perimeter) on busy Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.
This is a nice restaurant. It's perfect for a date or special occasion (or if you just want good Persian food). The space is big, open, and airy. Due to the spacious seating areas, group dining is common here and it can get loud. The decor is modern, elegant, and there's a Persian rustic vibe to it. There's a candle-lit ambiance at night. There's a wraparound bar, small "pantry" where goods are sold, indoor fountains, and my favorite part: the large open kitchen. The kitchen has two tandoor cylindrical clay ovens on display. The naan flatbread and other foods are baked in these cool-looking ovens.
It's hard to go wrong with many of the menu selections. Lots of folks rave about the beef (barg - barbecued filet, koobideh - ground/minced kabob) and lamb (shank, rack), but don't overlook the other fantastic, lighter dishes. My favorite dish here is actually the Chilean sea bass. To give you an idea on pricing, expect to spend about $10-15 per lunch entree and $20-35 per most dinner entrees.
Every meal starts off with a small, delectable plate of fresh herbs (mint, tarragon), chopped radish, green olives, a cube of feta cheese, and walnuts. These are served with hot-out-the-oven, semi-puffy, slighty charred naan bread. I like to snack on these foods individually, but you can make little wraps out of them too. You can also add the mint leaves to your water to make it taste more refreshing. A bottle of water is left at every table for instant self refills.
If you're looking for a good shareable appetizer, order the kashk badenjoon. It's fried eggplant dip made with cream of whey, crispy onion, garlic chips, and mint. It goes perfectly with the naan. I think this is one of the restaurant's most popular appetizers and for good reason. It's tasty, mouthwatering, and different from the "typical" hummus and mirza ghasemi (smoked eggplant dip).
The arugula salad is good. It comes with chopped Persian cucumber (sweeter than a regular cucumber), mint, radish, and feta cheese, and is drizzled with EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) and lemon juice. It's simple, light, delicious, and refreshing. Note: You can substitute a salad instead of rice on most of the entree dishes for a few dollars.
If you want to go lean and healthy, order the chicken barg. As mentioned above, barg is Persian-style barbecued meat. In this case, chicken breast. The marinade soaks into the meat which is cooked with olive oil, onion, garlic, saffron, salt, and pepper. The resulting chicken is tender and quite savory.
Each table comes with a small container of sumac, which is a tangy, crimson-colored Persian spice. It's supposedly healthy for you. It's not nearly as bad as salt and it supposedly aids in digestion. It's good stuff. I like to load it on my meals. It's typically added to meats and/or rice.
Speaking of rice, the saffron basmati rice at Rumi's is amazing. This rice comes with many entrees. The rice is long grain and fluffy. I love this type of rice. The rice also contains generous amounts of dill and fava beans for extra flavor and a contrasting texture. If I had to describe the rice in one word, it would be addicting. I can't get enough of it. Along with rice, a whole roasted tomato is also normally served with entrees here.
Last but not least, I highly recommend the Chilean sea bass. The way the chefs prepare and cook the fish is out of this world. It may very well be the best restaurant sea bass in metro Atlanta. The fish is melt-in-your-mouth good. It's fresh, soft, and and full of flavor. I've daydreamed about this particular dish. That's how good I think it is.
Service is very good.
Parking is complimentary valet. If you want to self-park, I wouldn't park at the IHOP next door. However, if it's after hours, you might be safe parking at some nearby strip malls. Just be sure to obey parking signs.
