Rufino's is located in Coventry in the kind of small strip you only notice when you live nearby or you are looking for it on purpose. Lights on, cars swinging in and out, people walking back to their trucks with boxes held flat like they are carrying something fragile and important. Inside, the room is pure function. Counter up front. Coolers of soda and water. Racks of chips. Stacks of boxes built into a cardboard skyline against the wall. A couple of tables, but the whole space feels designed for takeout more than lingering. It looks like a place that knows its job is to get hot pizza into people's cars as fast as possible. The service that night was just that. Functional. Orders taken, names called, boxes handed over. Nobody was rude. Nobody was especially welcoming either. It did the job. Whatever warmth was in the room came more from the customers talking to each other than from behind the counter. This was a Lord of the Pies stop, and for me, a second look. Last time I came through, Rufino's landed in the category of "fine, but forgettable." A place I would use if I lived around the corner, not one I would tell anyone to drive to. This year felt different. We ordered two pizzas. They offered a full pie with one topping on the coupon. We went with pepperoni on one. Grilled chicken on the other. When they landed on the table they looked exactly how you want them to look. Eight slices. Cheese bubbling and browned in spots. Cup and char pepperoni curled into little cups with edges that had gone dark. Crust with real color on the edges and that freckling underneath that tells you it has seen some heat. First bite, you get the crust. It is on the thinner side. The end crunches clean. The middle holds together when you pick it up and then settles into a nice chew. You taste dough. It tastes nice. It is definitely better than a vehicle for toppings like many places on this list. Rufino's leans hard into the cheese. These are cheese forward pies. The whole surface is covered, right out to the edge. For a lot of people that is heaven. I am more of a sauce and crust person, so heavy cheese usually makes me nervous. Here, it stays on the right side of the line. It melts evenly, gets that light golden browning in the right places, and never breaks into that orange puddle that ruins everything. The sauce still has a voice, which matters. Bright tomato flavor, a little sweetness, some herbs, enough acidity that you notice it under the cheese instead of having to go looking for it. You get a clean flash of tomato in just about every bite. That is all I ever ask. The pepperoni is exactly what it should be. The little cups crisp at the edges, pick up some char, and bring salt and heat that cut through the richness. Those slices go first for a reason. The grilled chicken pizza was solid. Chicken on pizza in the wrong hands can be dry punishment. This wasn't. The pieces stayed tender, had decent seasoning, and added texture and taste to the bite instead of dragging it down. With the same sauce and cheese underneath, it carried the pie a lot better than I expected as compared to the spicy pepperoni. My friends live about 20 minutes from Rufino's and have been trying to find "their" pizza spot. First couple of bites, they were quiet in that way that means they are actually paying attention. Then one of them looked up and just said, "Yeah. This is it." By the end of the meal they had decided this is where they want to get their pizzas from now on. That is the redemption here. The room has not changed. The pizza has. Last time, Rufino's felt like background. This time, the dough, the balance, and the toppings all felt more deliberate. It moved from "I would eat it if I had to" to "I get why the people who live near here choose it." If you are a cheese lover, this is going to land even higher for you than it did for me. If you are a sauce and crust person, you will still find plenty to respect. Either way, if you live in that part of Coventry, you do not need to go searching far. You already have a place that can be your regular. And if you do not live nearby but you find yourself out that way with an appetite, turning into that little strip and walking out with a Rufino's box under your arm won't ever be a mistake. read more

This is a couple weeks late, but regardless, warrants a review! I had the Italian grinder, ordered without cheese, olives or onions. It was delicious! My only other thing was the spring mix they use instead of iceberg lettuce. In my opinion, it's too delicate for this hearty sandwich. Plenty of meat, there was a good bite, and the bread is awesome! My husband had lasagna, which came with a Caesar salad. He was very happy with his choice! Chef Dom always has delicious food whether you take out, eat in, or enjoy the food at local festivals. Omg, we have no choice for delivery in our area. This is the reason this restaurant makes any money. Ordered a chicken cutlet parm paid for extra sauce, no didn't get it. Ordered jalapeño poppers, decent, sauce would have been extra! Ordered cheese steak egg rolls. Laughable, look like small spring rolls, sauce extra. I myself ordered a spinach cheese calzone. They must have turned the oven off to go home it was as doughy as can be. Oh not to mention it's an hour and a half wait and it said 50 minutes. Suckers of Coventry and Scituate keep paying them and we'll keep having terrible delivery. We need different and better. Closing out a late after-work run of Kent County pizza stops on my Rhode Island food fights 'Lord of the pies' tour, swung by here to grab a slice, and I was quite surprised at the size of this pizza slice and actually had trouble finishing it. The girl inside was super friendly and offered me a choice of slices but I just went with regular cheese nice sauce really heavy on the cheese and a very good crust. It's a pity it's so far out of my regular neighborhood. I don't know that I'll make it back here, but I was very pleased with this slice. read more

At the Federal Hill Columbus Day Festival I got their Philly cheesesteak sandwich which was only $12 with peppers and onion. It was large and the bread was very fresh. They stuffed it well with steak which was cooked exactly how I expected for a great cheesesteak. My mom got their eggplant parm sandwich for $10, (I scored half). Layers of good ole Italian-American eggplant parm with great bread. Can't get much better than that. read more

Found this place via an online search and we decided to give it a try...and we are so glad we did. Small place with just a few tables, but they went out of their way to make sure everything was good. We started with just an order of onion rings which were very nice and crunchy. We then had the Mediterranean Pizza with a garlic and olive oil base, and we were just floored at how good it was. After driving by the Rufinos restaurant for the past year we decided to order a large cheese, mushroom and onion pizza. It was probably one of the worst pizzas we have had. The crust was totally soggy. (Wet) there were probably 2-3 pieces of mushroom on each slice. Honestly I could of gotten a better slice at Cumberland farms. I don't like writing this bad review because I do believe in supporting small businesses. It is not meant to throw Rufinos under the bus but hopefully make them aware they need to step it up on quality and not serve wet, soggy pizza to their customers. Stopped in last night to check out the newest place in town and was very pleased with our meal. Before we ordered we were offered some garlic knots to sample and they were yummy. I would get them with a side of marinara for dipping. We ordered a meatball grinder and a chicken parm grinder. Both were HUGE!!! We did ask for a side of sauce and once we added just a bit more sauce the sandwiches were really good. Did I mention they were huge?? Could only eat half, the other half is my lunch today! 3rd visit to Rufino ... first visit - OK if your really hungry; two other visits: (on the plus side) food properly prepared - kitchen appeared clean and reasonably organized.... (on the less positive side) Pizzas crusts have tended to be "kinda chewy" - dough is better suited to their calzone (which is Rufinos better dough base menu item).... The staff tries hard - but prone to "disconnects" between the front and the kitchen during "peak" activity ... I guess everybody's still learning. I work in scituate, down in this area, and there are only a handful of spots to eat. I Go to ruffinos 3-5 times a week for lunch / dinner during work, almost daily. Food is amazing, I've tried almost everything on the menu. The sandwiches are giant for the price. The dinners are very large portions aswel. Great and friendly staff; and the food is always great. Runfino's has some of the best Italian food in Rhode Island, without the hassle of parking on Federal Hill. They are mostly takeout, but they do have a few tables inside. I brought my family, and everyone loved what they ordered. They use premium and fresh not frozen ingredients, so you'll pay a little more, but it's well worth it. Just check their hours to make sure they are open. They tend to be really busy, so order ahead of time for takeout. I highly recommend the food. read more
