Ruby Sunshine ended up being one of those brunch spots that was worth planning around. We visited while spending the day on Franklin's square, and the wait list was about an hour. Normally that's enough to make me reconsider brunch, but after eating here, I'd happily do it again. We were seated outside on an incredibly hot day, and our server--lovingly known as "Slacker"--absolutely earned a shoutout. He somehow managed to keep our table of indecisive food-sharers organized, never let our water glasses get empty, and made the whole experience feel relaxed instead of rushed. The only disappointment? They had already run out of gravy, which meant no biscuits and gravy for us. (My heart still hasn't fully recovered.) Instead, we leaned into sharing everything else. The fried green tomatoes absolutely lived up to the hype, the OG Bennie was fantastic, the avocado toast was fresh and flavorful, and because apparently self-control wasn't invited to brunch, we finished with the white chocolate bread pudding pancakes for "dessert." No regrets. Great food, fantastic service, and a perfect stop while exploring downtown Franklin. Just do yourself one favor... Get there early if biscuits and gravy are calling your name. read more

My first time at Ruby Sunshine, although I've eaten at several Ruby Slippers. Where better to try it than in Franklin TN? There are lots of places here for breakfast and all good and all menus a little different from each other. Ruby Sunshine is located in the roundabout on Main Street in an elegant building with an upscale feel. Picking up on the Nashville Country vibe, you'll find a wall of red Cowboy boots; but all are right-footed! The service is friendly and attentive, your coffee won't go cold, and you won't go thirsty either. Service was great, which is always the majority of the experience. We went around 10:15 for breakfast. All three in our party said nothing was "fresh". Diced potatoes had very little seasoning, and were room temp. Bacon was room temp/clearly cooked a few hours prior. Pancakes were okay. We've been coming to this Ruby Sunshine location for multiple years when visiting family in Franklin. We had been looking forward to our breakfast here all week. However, we were disappointed with our visit this time around. While the kitchen could have just had an off day, the biscuits and gravy dish was not the same, and it had always been a highlight of eating breakfast here. (Apparently there have been some changes to the menu franchise-wide, including to tried-and-true recipes, like the sausage gravy.) With the exception of the sausage gravy and some eggs that were a little underdone, the rest of our food was fine, although pretty standard breakfast fare and nothing that would knock your socks off. The meal's price point also increased with the menu changes, but that's unfortunately to be expected with the cost of everything these days and is not unique to this restaurant. I'm giving three stars because of past great experiences at this location and our thoughtful and prompt server who made our visit enjoyable. I have to be honest, walked into two other places in the downtown prior to settling on this place (other two looked historic etc but you ordered at the counter ). We were seated at a booth near the back of the bar and it was perfect (fairly quiet and out of the way). Our waitress, I believe Kelly, was absolutely outstanding. Pleasant, we never needed anything as she was very efficient but let us enjoy our meal. Now the food. Maybe the best biscuits and gravy I've ever had. Chunks of sausage with tons of flavor in the gravy. Biscuit was incredible. Silly as this sounds, even the over easy eggs were great. Bacon great flavor but maybe needed another minute in the pan. Average place to eat prices are way better than anything else we had been to in the area. Wyatt the waiter was great. The hostess took our name then immediately forgot us as we went to the bathroom came back up and she said goodbye to us as we proceeded outside to wait and we hadn't been seated yet so that was awkward. You pay with your phone just fyi and they will text you when table is ready. Parking in front on Sunday and Saturday have no time limit which is nice. Their bathroom is all the way down these stairs into a basement it was a little confusing but we figured it out. Could be a little cleaner. read more

This was a fun, bright and open brunch place we tried in downtown Franklin. There were a lot of things on the menu and everything we tasted was delicious. We especially liked the French toast bites. I usually don't eat French toast but these were delicious. They tasted almost like a churro but not as dry, with cream filling inside, and a buttery dip on the side. Their side of potatoes were seasoned perfectly. The bacon was also perfectly crispy and didn't have a lot of fat. They offer different flavored mimosas, and I had the blueberry lavender. It tasted great and I could have several at a time. Their breakfast tacos came with different meat add in options, avocado, and a really good chipotle sour cream. We had a kiddo with us and asked to get that order first. It came out extremely fast and that was very much appreciated. Our server checked on us and made sure everything was to our liking. I had a special request on my order and when the server realized I may have been displeased, he fixed it immediately. (I could have communicated my request better but he resolved it without me asking, which was excellent service.) Others in the group had eggs Benedict and biscuits and gravy, which was also delicious. The public bathroom is in the basement of the main building, so be aware you will need to exit the restaurant and use the elevator to access it. I would rate this place 5 stars easily, but none of the staff smiled. The food was great and the service was good too, but I would have like to have been greeted with a smile. Sigh. This used to be one of our favorite breakfast spots - and then they changed their menu. They eliminated my favorite dish (breakfast tacos) and ALL of their French toast options (as well as other popular dishes). They raised prices ($3.75 for a soda - even with refills - is bananas). Someone from corporate was there when we were there and we asked about the menu changes and he said they are trying to streamline the kitchen to cut back wait times, which isn't working as we waited an hour for a table (2x the amount of time the waitlist time we were given when we signed up online). There were a lot of empty tables, so our guess is they are understaffed. I will give three compliments: our food came out quickly, the new pancakes are decent, and our server was fantastic. Given the other choices we have for a less expensive breakfast with more choices and shorter wait times, we won't be back any time soon. Bummer. read more

I've been to Ruby Sunshine for breakfast several times and it been consistently yummy. Whether you're getting a sweet (French toast bites, cinnamon pancakes!) or savory (shrimp 'n grits, a Bennie!) you won't be disappointed. I've eaten at the bar and in the main dining room and service has always been friendly and prompt. In Franklin, it's right on the main circle so easy access to people watch if you're sitting outside and parking isn't difficult. We ate here for a Saturday lunch. The place was packed. The food was good, but I gave a 4 star because it took about 40 minutes for the food to come out. It was Very busy. I do think this is a good breakfast/ brunch spot. Everything we tried was good except my wife said the fried green tomato on her Benedict was mushy. We did enjoy our visit overall. They have a good selection of menu items and some alcoholic breakfast drinks along with some different coffee drinks. Downtown Franklin does have some street parking and parking garages. I am usually quite chary of restaurants claiming "New Orleans Roots" - most "Cajun" or "New Orleans" places have as much to do with the Crescent City as the average nail salon has with the North Pole. I.e.- not much. Ruby Sunshine is an exception, with its original location started in the French Quarter. Its strengths lie in the basics, like any good New Orleans eatery. The bignets are warm, coated with an abundance of powdered sugar, giving you a wonderful initial crunch until you bite into the soft, slightly gooey center. There are hints of cinnamon, vanilla, but just so. Their signature biscuits are robust and perfect for sopping up gravy or runny eggs, like any good southern biscuit should. The bacon was cooked perfectly, crisp without being burnt or, heaven forbid- undercooked. Everything on a basic level was done well. The menu is very workmanlike production, with all of the usual brunch favorites. Unpretentious, friendly with good food is a hallmark of food joints throughout New Orleans. Ruby Sunshine definitely fits the bill. That's the whole point. If you want fancy, high-falutin' gold-flecked eggs Benedict served by obsequious servers who pride themselves on their "special gastronomical knowledge" (lookin' at you, NYC!), this joint ain't it. But if you want to experience a solid, tasty, low-key working persons brunch, you can't go wrong with Ruby Sunshine. A note to readers: I give 5 star reviews as often as I win the lottery, so 4 stars is tops in my book. Well worth a visit and decent prices to boot. read more
