We've eaten at Gary's on Main several times back when Michael and Joni Cole owned it, and while the place always had great potential, it never quite lived up to our expectations. When Jonny Weber took over earlier this year, we were genuinely excited, we've always enjoyed his work at Country Boy in Leiper's Fork and Zolo's, and you can immediately feel the difference at Gray's The entertainment quality is noticeably upgraded. The staffing is dramatically improved, from the hostess stand to the servers, the attitude shift alone makes a world of difference. The menu has seen subtle but smart changes: keeping some of the old favorites while adding more sophisticated choices that elevate the dining experience. We're also glad to see a more efficient layout for the second floor stage area and dining area. When an owner can pick up extra seating without impacting other diners, that's smart business, more revenue for him, and ultimately better cost control that helps keep prices down for all of us. Our only hiccup this visit was the kitchen. The Sweet Pineapple Chili Drumsticks were really good, and all the orders were correct and arrived together. But both halibut plates and the the pork chop were all overdone, and the carrot cake was overly chilled. Timing and coordination are huge parts of a dining experience, and we expect those issues will get ironed out as the team settles in. Even with that, the overall improvement is undeniable. The direction Jonny is taking Gary's on Main is exactly what this spot needed, and we fully expect the kitchen to catch up to the rest of the operation. We'll be part of that future. read more

With Grays on Main recently changing ownership, we were curious to see what, if anything, had changed. We made reservations for a Thursday night upstairs and were looking forward to the experience. When we arrived, there was a singer on stage playing acoustic guitar. He was fine and provided a nice atmosphere, serving more as background music than the main attraction. To start, I ordered an Old Fashioned, and it was very good. The clear ice was the first clue that they knew what they were doing behind the bar. My wife ordered a martini, and it looked as good as it tasted, be sure to check out the picture! For appetizers, we had the Fried Pimento Cheese Balls, and these are an absolute must-order. Crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and packed with flavor. We also ordered the skillet-baked cornbread with cinnamon honey butter. Wow! Another must-have. The cornbread was delicious, and the cinnamon honey butter took it to another level. For entrées, we tried the Shrimp and Cheddar Grits, which had great flavor and were very well prepared. The Pan-Seared Halibut was beautifully presented and tasted just as good as it looked. Unfortunately, my New York Strip was the low point of the evening. The peppercorn butter added nice flavor, but it couldn't overcome the fact that the steak was tough and difficult to cut, even with a butter knife since no steak knife was provided. The cut of beef simply wasn't what I would expect at this price point, and it's not something I would order again. Service was a bit inconsistent as well. My wife ordered a second glass of wine that never arrived, and after waiting for a while, we decided to skip dessert and call it a night. Overall, Grays on Main still offers a great atmosphere, excellent cocktails, and some outstanding menu items. The appetizers alone are worth the visit. However, the service needs some attention, and the steak program could use improvement. If those issues are addressed, I'd gladly give it another try. read more

Came here for lunch with some friends after doing some shopping and walking around Franklin. First thing I noticed was the fried pimento cheeseballs. They are absolutely amazing. They sit on a spread of pepper jelly that adds just the right amount of sweetness and a bit of spice to the richness of the pimento cheese. It's a darn shame what's happened to Gray's on Main since the new ownership took over. For the last five years, this has been one of our primary spots in Franklin. The staff was always amazing and friendly, the food was fantastic, the cocktails were great, and the atmosphere had that small town Main Street feel that made the place special. When new ownership took over, we really hoped that would continue. We've gone back four or five times since, trying to give it a chance, but unfortunately this last visit will be our last. It's pretty amazing how quickly a great restaurant can decline. The food is no longer what it used to be, the staff isn't nearly as friendly, and the restaurant just doesn't feel inviting anymore. Our last dinner was with a large group. It took almost an hour for our food to come out, multiple entrees were wrong, and there was zero apology. Our server acted like we were bothering them when we brought up the issues. We finally asked to speak with a manager and were told the manager didn't want to come over. That was honestly pretty shocking. It's unfortunate because Gray's was one of the coolest spots on Main Street and a restaurant we genuinely loved supporting for years. I was visiting from out of town with some work colleagues. We got the dates wrapped in bacon and pimento cheese balls as starters. They were both delicious. I got the fried chicken meal. It was the best fried chicken meal I've ever had. Lighting is very dim, which seemed to be the norm for this area of Tennessee. Seemed like every restaurant I went to it was dark. Not a fan of that. But that didn't sway my review. The only thing that is keeping this review from 5 stars is our service. To me it was disappointing. We had 7 people in our group. Most of us got water, while a few others chose alcohol. Our server couldn't even keep our water cups 1/4 of the way filled. We sat empty for a while and we never seen our waiter. Gray's is regarded as a Franklin date-night staple and after our Friday evening of eats & drinks, I am glad to say its reputation holds up. Seated by the window at table for two, we watched Main Street buzz while we chased our own, me with the "Main Street Squeeze" (tasted like a liquid creamsicle) and he with Some Sorta Bourbon Pour (the particulars of which are unbeknownst to me). As a starter, we chose the bacon wrapped figs and agreed we could've eaten about an entire popcorn bucket full of them... They hit all the right sweet / salty / smokey notes that keep a person wanting juuuust oooone more. My red blooded American date went with the New York Strip for his entree, while I opted for the Heritage Fried Chicken per our server's ringing endorsement. We had not a single complaint as we smiled and ate and stole bites off each other's plates. Really tasty food. Definitely recommend to start with the Bacon Wrapped Figs and Crispy Smashed Potatoes...super yummy. The Rose Cocktail is delicious and quite beautiful and is similar to a Cosmo. The Looking Glass is a strong gin drink that mimics an Old Fashioned with the block ice but nice if you love gin. For dinner I would absolutely recommend the Fried Chicken...SO good. The Shrimp and Grits were yummy but you have to understand they are not your typical grits. Uniquely enough, they add popcorn to the grits as they are made to create a thicker consistency. Personally, I would stick with the beautiful recipe of the shrimp with okra and sausage but keep a more traditional grits recipe. Mimosa flight 3. Quick food times Cons: 1. The live music was way too loud (I'm just not a live music person unless it's someone I like/know). I feel like I couldn't even talk to the person across from me without shouting. It was annoying to the point that I was eating quickly so our table could leave quicker. 2. Service was okay.. our waitress was very monotone, had to be asked about drink refills several times, came back to table to ask us about things she forgot to include in the order. She just seemed like she didn't know what she was doing. 3. The menu. We came for brunch, and the menu was majority breakfast items with a couple of lunch items sprinkled in. It was already after noon, so I was in the mood for lunch. I ordered the burger... oh no they ran out of the burger? How do you run out of a burger? It's been just over an hour since open. What I ended up getting was just alright. 4. They're very picky about the menu and what is possible to order. My sister wanted to get a plain waffle with biscuits and orange juice for her kids, and the waitress was so confused by that and said that you can't get orange juice unless it's with a mimosa?? During our recent visit to the Nashville area we visited Franklin and found this fabulous place on Main St. The building was the site for the original Gray's pharmacy. The new owner Johnny has pulled a great team together and this places rocks. On the second floor there is live music. The bartender makes wonderful cocktails, we the kitchen turns out fabulous food, we had the short ribs so tender. Also the fried chicken is the best I have ever had. All amazing ! The chocolate pecan was out of this world. I've never had chocolate pecan pie and I was pleasantly surprised. We took an Uber from Nashville, it was about a 15 minute ride and well worth it. Definitely need reservations and ask to sit upstairs if you would like to listen to live music. I had a great experience here! I came alone so was going to sit at the bar, and the hostess mentioned there was an upstairs dining area as well. I fell in love with upstairs and if I ever go back, that's where you'll find me. The bar does have a side along the windows where their marquee sign is and you get a great people-watching view of the street if you turn your chair. My bartender was super sweet and excellent. I actually went for a mocktail and tried their Vanilla and Pear Spritz; that was unbelievable! So good. For food I started with the Goat cheese stuffed, bacon-wrapped dates. These were good, but something about the sauce was not jiving with the dates for me. I still polished them off, though. However the star of this visit was my entree; I got the Market fish, which happened to be halibut with veggies an artichoke veloute sauce. The veggies included squash and eggplant and even lemongrass; the sauce was stunning!!! Absolutely fabulous. And I didn't get dessert, but they were able to make a pot of coffee for me, which I greatly appreciated, especially since it was pretty late by then. read more
