I was visiting from out of town with some work colleagues. We got the dates wrapped in bacon and pimento cheese balls as starters. They were both delicious. I got the fried chicken meal. It was the best fried chicken meal I've ever had. Lighting is very dim, which seemed to be the norm for this area of Tennessee. Seemed like every restaurant I went to it was dark. Not a fan of that. But that didn't sway my review. The only thing that is keeping this review from 5 stars is our service. To me it was disappointing. We had 7 people in our group. Most of us got water, while a few others chose alcohol. Our server couldn't even keep our water cups 1/4 of the way filled. We sat empty for a while and we never seen our waiter. We were there for about 2.5 hours and my glass was filled twice. I would much rather preferred him leave a pitcher for us than to not check and see if we wanted more. read more

I love coming to Grays on Main when I find myself in the Franklin area! Such a cool old building with so much character in this quaint little town! We started our lunch with cocktails all around which were the Grays famous ANTHYM SPIRITS. So very good! My choice for lunch was the shrimp and grits, which seems to be what I always order unless the hot chicken sandwich is on the menu. The dish is over the top delectable and you can't go wrong! During our recent visit to the Nashville area we visited Franklin and found this fabulous place on Main St. The building was the site for the original Gray's pharmacy. The new owner Johnny has pulled a great team together and this places rocks. On the second floor there is live music. The bartender makes wonderful cocktails, we the kitchen turns out fabulous food, we had the short ribs so tender. Also the fried chicken is the best I have ever had. A+ for the classic old school decor and old time feel. Drove down to Franklin to get away from Broadway for a night and check out the old school charm and vibe. Think old architecture classic buildings. We popped into Grays for a drink and immediately fell in love with the decor and old school vibe. The bartender was a true mixologist. Both cocktails we tried, the Grays and the Giant Peach and also the Anthym Spirit were delicious. The bartender was friendly and informative on the area and also the bar itself. He knew his craft for certain. We don't go upstairs for the live music as we were heading somewhere else after this stop, but this is a must stop if you're in the area. Gray's is regarded as a Franklin date-night staple and after our Friday evening of eats & drinks, I am glad to say its reputation holds up. Seated by the window at table for two, we watched Main Street buzz while we chased our own, me with the "Main Street Squeeze" (tasted like a liquid creamsicle) and he with Some Sorta Bourbon Pour (the particulars of which are unbeknownst to me). As a starter, we chose the bacon wrapped figs and agreed we could've eaten about an entire popcorn bucket full of them... They hit all the right sweet / salty / smokey notes that keep a person wanting juuuust oooone more. My red blooded American date went with the New York Strip for his entree, while I opted for the Heritage Fried Chicken per our server's ringing endorsement. We had not a single complaint as we smiled and ate and stole bites off each other's plates. Really tasty food. Definitely recommend to start with the Bacon Wrapped Figs and Crispy Smashed Potatoes...super yummy. The Rose Cocktail is delicious and quite beautiful and is similar to a Cosmo. The Looking Glass is a strong gin drink that mimics an Old Fashioned with the block ice but nice if you love gin. For dinner I would absolutely recommend the Fried Chicken...SO good. The Shrimp and Grits were yummy but you have to understand they are not your typical grits. Uniquely enough, they add popcorn to the grits as they are made to create a thicker consistency. Personally, I would stick with the beautiful recipe of the shrimp with okra and sausage but keep a more traditional grits recipe. We tried to order coffee and dessert but oddly they were "Out of coffee." Great service with ample parking as it is downtown Franklin. yes yes yes we loved our time here! definitely make a reservation on bust weekend nights! it's super easy through the website, but they will charge you $25 per person if you cancel your reservation last minute on them (which is fair they're a busy restaurant!!) please note: they do change their menu so if you like something now it might not be around next time you go back! we loved our food! we had the shrimp and grits, fried chicken, and seafood alfredo. Turns out the whole second floor had been rented out for a private event, and our table was no longer ours. No "we're sorry," no offer to make things right -- just a "you're downstairs now." Now look, we know the restaurant biz ain't easy, and you've gotta take the big parties when they come knockin'. We get it. But the way it was handled felt a little... cold. A comped appetizer or even just a warm "thanks for understanding" visit would've gone a long way. As it was presented, well -- it is what it is. All that said, we decided to roll with it, and honestly? We still had a nice lunch. Our booth was comfy, and our waiter was a real bright spot -- kind, attentive, and just the right amount of friendly without hovering. The food mostly hit the mark. The cheesesteak was ok (though they serve the cheese on the side -- a little surprise there), and the chicken salad was downright delicious. Fries come standard with everything. We probably should've sprung for a salad upgrade. The beer's all canned, but cold and enjoyable. I had a great experience here! I came alone so was going to sit at the bar, and the hostess mentioned there was an upstairs dining area as well. I fell in love with upstairs and if I ever go back, that's where you'll find me. The bar does have a side along the windows where their marquee sign is and you get a great people-watching view of the street if you turn your chair. My bartender was super sweet and excellent. I actually went for a mocktail and tried their Vanilla and Pear Spritz; that was unbelievable! So good. For food I started with the Goat cheese stuffed, bacon-wrapped dates. These were good, but something about the sauce was not jiving with the dates for me. I still polished them off, though. However the star of this visit was my entree; I got the Market fish, which happened to be halibut with veggies an artichoke veloute sauce. The veggies included squash and eggplant and even lemongrass; the sauce was stunning!!! Absolutely fabulous. I always go to listen to the live music on the second floor. However, I went last night and the host on the first floor told me there was no seating until 8:30 then he tried to get me to make a reservation with my card instead of adding me to the waitlist which seemed off. I asked if I could go upstairs and check out the bar and he hesitantly allowed me to. When I went upstairs there were many open tables. I asked the hostess on the second floor if I could sit there with my family to listen to the music. She was wonderful and sat us immediately. They almost lost an entire table of business because the host downstairs turned me away. Their food is pretty good, and we like their drinks, but when you're turned away at the front door when there's open seats there's a problem. The staff on the second floor were incredible though and made up for that weird encounter! read more

If they came out hot I would fund this restaraunt 5 stars. Our server was friendly but a bit slow. It was busy but I observed him not doing anything at times. That's probably why our food came out luke warm. Bacon wrapped figs were good and has a sweet sauce on top. Serving was not too big. We also had the Shrimp over grits, filet mignon, and short ribs. All amazing ! The chocolate pecan was out of this world. I've never had chocolate pecan pie and I was pleasantly surprised. We took an Uber from Nashville, it was about a 15 minute ride and well worth it. Definitely need reservations and ask to sit upstairs if you would like to listen to live music. looking at the menu online seemed like this was a good idea - - but unfortunately, when we were seated our table, I continually got water dripping from the ceiling into my hair and on my seat and my shoulder. There was a young kid with a long pole and a mop with a towel wrapped around it, continually walking up and down the restaurant, wiping up the condensation that was falling off the piping. The entire tin ceiling was corroded and pieces were hanging down. There was a large trash bin in the hallway, headed towards the bathroom that was open with visible trash in it. We had the corn bread (delicious and loved the honey butter), the shrimp and grits (very well seasoned and delicious!), the pork shank (the highlight of the meal, everyone loved it) and the scallops (the sauce was overpowering but good nonetheless). I came for lunch awhile back and had a great experience. The service was good, and we enjoyed the food. This past Saturday(6/22) we made a reservation for 8 upstairs by the stage. We ended up having 12 because more people came into town. We figured we could pull up a few chairs, maybe some of the group could grab another table or sit a the bar. We were wrong, which was totally fine. The problem is the hostess was extremely rude in telling us. It was not warranted in any way--simply asking what our options were if there were any. She could have easily conveyed the same message with a much kinder demeanor instead of going off on us. I am writing this because if I was an owner, I would want to know how poorly the hostess treated guests. If it wasn't for her we would have stayed, and just had a few people sit at bar downstairs. read more

We sat at a high top in the bar area without any wait. Our order came out quickly. I had the shrimp and grits. Very well done and seasoned perfectly. The wait staff was very attentive and helpful. Gray's on Main resides in a beautiful historical drug store, rich with history in Franklin TN. Look around, read the walls, notice the charm of this Franklin Jewel. We have been coming here for years, mostly because of their great mixologists. This time to our amazement they added a 1st floor bar, looks amazing! We retreated to the 2nd floor where there is a smaller bar, table tops, and a music stage. We normally don't eat here because the food has been average. Well, something changed and for the good! I started off with an Old Fashioned with Sazerac Bourbon, they are always on point! For our appetizer we ordered the Bacon Wrapped Figs, anything with Benton's bacon from East TN is delicious! For dinner my wife ordered the Goat Cheese & Mushroom Agnolotti, she said it was very good. I ordered the Bouillabaisse, with Red Snapper, Scallops, Mussels, Littleneck Clams, Fennel, Fingerling Potatoes, with Saffron Tomato Broth. Ok, this changed my opinion of Gray's, DANG.... This was amazing!!!! The flavor and how it was cooked was perfect! I did have one recommendation for the chef, the broth was soooooo good I wanted to soak it up with some bread! Denise our waitress was amazing, another reason this place is special. When I suggested this, she asked the chef to make me a skillet corn bread so I could enjoy the broth! There is a restaurant in Knoxville that brings out an 8 inch baguette in a brown paper bag to keep it warm, this maybe a good addition to this entree. Now for dessert, save room...
