An amazing way to get introduced to Burmese food. We arrived 30 minutes before closing, and the owner graciously still accommodated us. We ordered the tea leaf salad, chicken curry roti, and nan gyi dok. Everything was amazingly prepared, with attention to detail in service. The tea leaf salad and prepared and mixed in front of you and was light and refreshing. The roti was hot, fresh, and savory. The noodles were balanced, and reminded me of a dish that would bring up good memories of home. We left, having only spent $25 for the two of us, with our hearts and stomachs full. read more

Delicious food! They take reservations and are wonderful with customer service, especially Lin who has been our favorite waiter for years.

Beyond Rangoon, it covers a dynamic fusion of Chinese and Burmese. Best to go with large crowds so you can order a diverse family style number of plates. So much has already been reviewed. But as for my favorites, they were the Burmese BBQ Pork Garlic Noodle and the Salmon Lemongrass. Anything pork and anything lemongrass is going to be exemplary. Last advice for newbies: Pair every dish with Coconut Rice. Simply put, this cuisine was one of the great discoveries of the year for me. We've come to RS many times and liked it as an alternative to Burma Superstar, with reservations, good food, and a more relaxed atmosphere. We had no issues with the restaurant until our final visit several weeks ago. I waited to write this review to be more objective, in case I'd feel differently. Nope, still bad. Here goes. Pros: The food. The great waiter (Lin), who managed to eclipse the bad at various points. We pulled him aside as we left to thank him and inform him that should a negative review be written, it wouldn't be due to any fault on his part. Again, Lin was awesome and tried his best to make us feel welcome despite the bad. I'm actually glad we were a large group and had to pay a set gratuity, since we would've been really torn about the tip otherwise and Lin didn't deserve to get docked. Cons: The hostess (presumably one of the managers), who managed to demonstrate poor service beyond our wildest expectations, despite our familiarity with various hole-in-the-wall Asian eateries you go to for the food and not the service. We were a party of 13, including children. Knowing it'd be a busy time, I made the reservation about a month in advance for 12-13, then re-confirmed the reservation a week in advance for 13 since our party was finalized. During these conversations, RS never indicated that there was an issue with accommodating a party of our size or that there'd be time limits. We arrived in separate groups, and we the organizers arrived later. The first party to arrive was apparently asked by the hostess if we could try to finish in 1.5 hours. Not knowing what to say to a request to have a party of 13 finish dinner in 1.5 hours, they said they could try. This request was not reiterated when the rest of the party arrived until the very end, when it was communicated in a very different way. Once we the organizers arrived, they asked if we're actually going to be a party of 14. I'd made the reservation for 13, so I was confused, but I recounted numbers in my head and said we were 13. We were shown to tables along the main hallway next to the entrance, a high-traffic area. The hostess demanded that we sit from one end, and said that if we were wrong about having 13 people, they'll take a table away. We reiterated that we were 13, but the hostess brushed us off. The tone with which the request was communicated made us feel like we were actively lying about our party numbers just to have a spare table. When everyone arrived, we attempted to ensure that everyone was seated in a sensible way because there were children. The hostess began pushing past my guests, demanding in an irritated voice that we "get out of the way" and sit down. Functionally, we understood that guests needed to get through the hallway. However, the tone of the request made us feel we were entirely at fault for being a large group seated in a high-traffic area. When we voiced our concerns about the situation and explained why we needed some time to situate our party, the hostess brushed us off. We were not in our best mood as Lin arrived, but he was great and defused our group's mood considerably. We continued to observe the hostess directing other staff in an irritated manner, and we talked about whether she was having a bad day. We were starting to feel okay about it all thanks to Lin and the food, but then we paid the check. As soon as the check was paid, the hostess arrived at our table with two staff members, and loudly proclaimed "'You paid the check, you have to leave now." We weren't intending to dally since we saw that there were people waiting, but many couldn't help but stare at her at that point. Perhaps in an attempt to explain, the hostess then said, "I told you, you have to leave in an hour and a half. I told you, okay?" At this point, I couldn't help but to retort that we were never in fact told that we'd have to leave, but the hostess shook her head and started to clear the table around us. We left, since we could tell that further attempts to communicate would be unproductive. I've worked in the food service industry before. If you're having a bad day and you can't control your mood in front of guests, it is a bad idea to work as the face of the restaurant. If your establishment cannot in fact handle a large group for a given time period, they should not accept the reservation. If your establishment needs to set time limits for reservations during a busy period, that restriction should be communicated at the time of the reservation, or prior to the visit (that's why phone numbers are requested when people make reservations). If it's an unforeseen predicament due to accidental double-bookings or whatnot, there are ways to communicate ad hoc requests for accommodation to guests without making them feel like they are the ones at fault. That's basically it. We regret not being able to return to RS on account of this experience. The food's good, but it's best to avoid if you are a large party. read more

My wife and I and another couple had dinner here on Saturday. We have eaten here before and have enjoyed the food. We ordered the usual popular dished and were not disappointed. However, we ordered a bottle of wine and the waiter brought 4 separate glasses of wine. When questioned the waiter said he had poured the wine in equal amount in each glass (Didn't look like it ). We were so taken aback we let it go. However, on reflection, we decided that what the waiter had done was wrong. He should have brought the bottle over to the table so we could have ascertained that it was the correct wine, tasted the wine and if acceptable, approved the wine. It is the first time this has happened to us. Anyway, the food at the restaurant was very good. However, the service gets a black mark! read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a long time but never got around to it until last month when a friend had a birthday dinner here. We came in at 8 and made a reservation for 15 people. With a big party, orders can often get complicated, as people are sharing dishes but despite that, the workers were still very patient with us. I shared a tea leaf salad with two other people and ordered Nan Gyi Dok for my entree. Everyone raves about their tea leaf salad; I finally tried it and definitely agree with them! The tea leaf salad is absolutely delicious! I probably wouldn't order it as an entree just because I don't think it would be substantial but it's definitely something everyone should try. There's a generous amount of greens and a ton of toppings including fried garlic chips and sesame seeds. My favorite part was the tea leaves. The texture was The garlic chips' crunchiness contrasted very well with the other ingredients, which were softer and had a different texture. I liked the addition of sesame seeds because as soon as you bite into a seed, a burst of flavor comes out, enhancing that bite. They didn't roast or grind the sesame seeds so there wasn't as much flavor, but I definitely think that adding grinder sesame seeds will make the dish even more delectable. I love peanuts and adding them to any dish immediately makes the dish even better because of the texture and aroma. The Nan Gyi Dok was also very good. I was craving noodles and this seemed to be the most popular noodle dish. I was not disappointed. The portion was pretty generous and I saved half for lunch the next day. The noodles were soft and they gave a generous amount of chicken, which was tender and juicy. My favorite part was the sauce, a creamy coconut chicken sauce. It was creamy with a hint of sweetness, reminded me of the sauce in ma jiang mien (Chinese noodles with peanut sauce). You could also taste the coconut; it was enough to give the dish flavor but not enough to overwhelm the flavored of everything else. I'm so happy that I got to try this place! Had B-day lunch with bf and another day with my Mom, and really enjoyed coconut chicken noodle soup, tea leaf salad, rainbow salad, pumpkin pork stew, coconut rice and lemon grass chicken! Tea leaf salad--must have! Theirs has a tea leaf paste (compared to others that use whole tea leaves). Yummy. Pea Greens with tofu: Good sauce, overall very good. The pea greens should have been removed from the stems; they were not so there were some that had inedible parts. But overall very good. Garlic noodles: No flavor to speak of. Lots of garlic, but even that didn't add much flavor. J suggested that other garlic noodles had more oil, which contributed to better flavor. So I guess I can say healthy choice, if taste free. read more

He was so courteous and patient and had incredible people skills. I would return to this place just to be served by him (pity I don't know his name). I'm like a huge fan of this place. I think it's rare to go to an Asian restaurant where the service is this damn amazing. Not to mention why is everyone so nice, so gracious. And their food! It kicks ass. Seriously, it's a step up from typical Asian restaurant. It's a little more interesting. It's not quite sweet or herbaceous as typical Thai food, and without the grease of the Chinese food, without the simplicity of Japanese but with all the flavor, grace, and quirk of awesome Asian food. Such a great joint; the wait is never long either for seating or eating and the vibe is really lively, but chill at the same time. Parking is also easy. Highly recommend. read more

Review update, because my wife really wanted to eat Thai, and Rangoon Superstar is open until 10PM, and is close enough. Service is still confused, but somewhat better. Still below average. Food is slightly above average, but nothing special. Prices are roughly double what they should be. I can go to Saul's in North Berkeley and get sustainable salmon with sauteed seasonal vegetables and a rice pilaf for $16. The same money gets me a small portion of pre-cooked pork curry here with a few pieces of potato, when you factor in the cost of rice. ($14.00 + $2.50). If everything else was spot on, and the food was super delicious, sure - but we're talking about a place in the middle of nowhere that just isn't that great. Just not good enough to warrant going to, but you'll probably like it if you like Burma Superstar because hey, you've got bad taste and are easily pleased by foods that sound exciting and taste like what you're used to. read more

Went here for the first time today. Nice place, the mango chicken was great, sweet and flavorful. We also enjoyed the tea leaf salad. They tossed it for us at the table, and put the shrimp powder on the side as some of us are vegetarian and some are not. We were a group of four and our experience here was interesting, to say the least. We came in on Sunday evening around 8pm and were seated pretty quickly. After ordering, we didn't have to wait too long either. We ordered the samosas, tea leaf salad, garlic noodles with tofu, and the chicken curry. We got the samosas first, which was good. Next came the chicken curry and garlic noodles. However, the guy who brought out our food mistakenly called it the pork curry and Thai noodles. When we clarified our order, he took a close look at our dishes and realized that he said them wrong and explained that he was new. The tea leaf salad came right after. When we received it, someone (who I assumed to be the owner?) even came to explain everything that was in it and then mixed it for us, which was nice. It was a little too crunchy and nutty for my taste though. I also wish the ratio of lettuce was more. Our favorites were the samosas and garlic noodles. The chicken curry was okay. Towards the end of our meal when we were ready for the check and to-go boxes, we waited a bit to receive our check, but after a good while, we had to ask the new guy who came to take our dishes away. And when I say he came to take our dishes away, I mean he took ALL our dishes away. It was like he was on a mission to clear all of our dishes in one go, which he managed to do, but not without having to reach over us as he did so. Before that though, we asked for to-go boxes and said that they could all just go in one box since we only had a bit leftover from each dish. So, after hearing that, he carelessly tossed the food from each plate onto one and mixed up everything in the process, which caused some stares of disbelief from each of us. After leaving with the all-mixed-up leftover dish in one hand and the huge stack of dirty dishes in the other, all we could do was just laugh at this new guy for such weird service and having to struggle with all those dishes, lol. Had we not been a group of less light-hearted people, we would have been angry, but all we could do was laugh. So after all that and a now cleared table, we still hadn't received our check. The new guy said that our server would come by with it, but we spied our server over by the bar sipping some water and happily chatting with co-workers. Finally, one of us had to get up and ask the girl at the entrance, and we finally got our check. But then after putting our cards in there, we had to get up again and give it to the girl because no one was coming by to take it. Once she gave back the receipts for us to sign -- and surprise! -- there was no pen! Oh boy, we just had to laugh some more at the crazy service we were receiving, lol. Luckily, one of us had a pen. And then we finally left. So, in a nutshell, the food was pretty good, but the service was just laughable, literally. But not necessarily in a good way. Would I come again? Nah. read more

I grew up in Berkeley and have been to most restaurants and this place is absolutely in my top five - if not top three. We're taken to a tiny table-for-2, we see the 7 comfortable, seat-padded booths - all empty - and again ask for one. But "They're all reserved." Rangoon is a pretty spacey restaurant, with a front portion and a back portion separated by a wall. The menu is extensive, and has many of the classic Burmese cuisine favorites, like Tea Leaf Salad, noodles, curries, an entire vegetarian-friendly menu, and my personal favorite: Garlic Eggplant. The garlic eggplant was ok, but the flavoring, spiciness, and texture was unfortunately not quite on par. For dessert, we ordered the fried bananas...I do NOT recommend it! The bananas were hard, dense, and battered in a very flour-y and thick batter, which was absolutely NOT what I was expecting. The texture and taste was really off. We ordered vanilla ice cream to go with it, but we got a scoop of coconut instead, which did not meld with the banana flavor well. I hate to compare restaurants, but Burma Superstar does it better. I went to Rangoon with a group of 4 and ordered 5-6 dishes, with coconut rice. The coconut rice did not wow me; the rice was not very glutinous, and did not stick together the way Burma's rice does. It was on the dry side and just fell apart like basmati instead of jasmine. The food at Burma has this extra magic - that extra detail that really elevates their dishes into the "unforgettable meal" category, whereas Rangoon is just a delicious meal. read more

I initially gave Rangoon Super Stars two stars, (see older review below) but recently went back, at a friend's request, and my experience led me to give it another star. This time, I tried the vegetarian Samosa soup, which was a bit salty but very enjoyable, the great mango lassi, and a very delicious eggplant with garlic sauce. The special of the day, bamboo shoots with your choice of protein, had a sauce that overshadowed the bamboo shoots, unfortunately, and the ginger salad didn't compare with the other salads; and I'd get one of the others next time. But the overall experience was definitely better, with excellent service and enough tasty dishes that I will return. Old review: I just happened to go to the Oakland Bombay Superstar for the first time during the same week (last week) that I went to Rangoon for the first time. Both were very similarly priced, and the one advantage to the Rangoon was that parking and seating was easier. But it went downhill from there. I was surprised that the service, which started out well, got worse and worse, with delays in filling water glasses, and a large delay in both getting us the bill and then returning with our change. The food was significantly better at Burma Superstar than at Rangoon. The tea leaf salad, which I had before at the Burma restaurant in San Francisco, was ok, but a bit bitter. The mango lassi was fine, but the rest of the dishes (garlic eggplant, and pumpkin curry) were quite bland. Perhaps their main spice is hot pepper, because we ordered our dishes mild and they were really mediocre. (We ordered mild dishes at Burma Superstar and they, on the other hand, were very flavorful.) The much-vaulted Palata bread was terribly overpriced and quite mediocre too. I wonder why others loved it so much, it's just basic fried bread that I've had better at several Chinese restaurants for 1/2 the price or less. I went with my partner tonight because I'd heard great things about this place. Maybe it was a weird night, but this is my take... Service was criminally negligent. We actually had an awesome server, who I think was named Oussama, but as far as I could tell, he was greeting and sitting all customers, serving all the tables in my view, refilling everybody's water and making sure everything was running smoothly/taking payments. I felt really bad because he was really great, but how can this guy be expected to do everything by himself? We ordered a salad, and apparently when it arrives your server is supposed to mix it for you and point out all of the different ingredients. We got a salad, but then our server got called away because inevitably one of the other 40 people he was serving needed his attention. We went ahead and ate our salad and 10 minutes later he came back and mixed the remaining bit of salad left and said he felt bad because he was supposed to do it upon serving it. That sums up the service really. The ownership really needs to address this. Oussama was awesome but he needed at least one or two other servers on the floor with him. Food was actually good. The layout is pretty awkward though and if you're at the bar, be prepared to endure a stressful night. Also - such a pet peeve of mine!! They give you the tiniest water glasses and never refill them! Not okay to do with spicy food especially! I understand you're busy but at least give me a full size water glass so I don't drink all of my water as soon as you refill it. Rangoon Super Stars is a restaurant that I want to love because the food really is pretty good. Portions are on the smaller side for the price but most Burmese restaurants are similarly priced so I wouldn't really count that against them. I've been here twice, once with the girlfriend and once with some friends, both times kinda on a whim. Everything we've ordered has tasted at least decent and at best very delicious. Definitely suggest the minted jalapeno tofu, pumpkin pork stew, and eggplant dish as some go to's. Unfortunately what sets this restaurant back is the fact that it is expensive and because of the price you pay, you kinda expect a certain level of service. Rangoon Super Stars definitely tries to pull off a more upscale Asian restaurant kinda like Burma SuperStar or Great China but the problem is the waiters and busboys are just really inexperienced, awkward, and shy. Maybe its a cultural divide because I have noticed that most of them have poor English, but regardless it creates a slightly uncomfortable dining experience. As an example, on our most recent visit, we ordered the tea leaf salad to start as an appetizer since we had not all decided what we wanted yet. But then no one came to check on us or take our order for a long time and so we had to call someone over. Then when we finally ordered and were working on the tea leaf salad, we had to wait another 15 or so minutes before our food came. During that time, a busboy came to ask if we wanted our tea leaf salad packed, which I guess is a nice gesture because we were waiting for our food, but typically I would expect food to be packed at the end of a meal. Add on the fact that we were waiting so long for our food with no check ins from our waiter, I was honestly a little concerned that they thought we were finishing up our meal rather than just starting. Anyway, the food here is good and the I've never had to wait unlike at Burma Superstar. But just keep in mind that the staff is a big awkward and the restaurant is very slow. read more
