BLUF: Somewhere between OK and Good, but there might be consistency and customer service issues. Dim-sum in Downtown Flushing, Queens, is mediocre. There are no great places here. There are some generally Good (4 stars) places, like Asian Jewels and Emperor Seafood, but most other places are somewhere between OK and Good (between 3 and 4 stars). Royal Queen 君豪大酒楼 is part of that latter group -- there are good things, but there is also mediocrity; and there are customer service issues. The good: - Beef Rice Noodle Rolls: The rice noodle rolls here are generally silky soft. There is supposedly parsley in the beef mince but we noticed little to none in the versions we've had. Royal Queen is generous with the sweetened soy sauce; they pour it from a teapot. - Pan-Fried Leek Dumplings 韭菜煎蝦餃: the shrimp are generally fresh and crisp. - Shrimp Siu Mai with Pork 蝦粒乾蒸燒賣: above average. - The Osmanthus Jelly 杞子桂花糕 has a deeper hue than most other places in Queens. The OK: - Five-Spice Braised Beef Tendon 五香蒸牛筋: pieces are generally little too large and not as consistently soft as other places. - Steamed Leek Dumplings: get the pan-fried version instead. - Stuffed Peppers 煎釀青椒: as with other places, inconsistently cleaned so there can be one or two bites that have an extreme amount of heat. - Shrimp Siu Mai: essentially the same as the ha gow, but in a different wrapper. We arrived at 11:30 AM and were seated promptly at a four-top. We requested soy sauce, hot sauce, and a Diet Coke, all of which our server brought over quickly. One of the pushcart attendants was especially helpful and proactively went to find an item we asked about, the steamed pork buns, which we appreciated. Such a happy accident to find this spot. Was looking for the food hall but walked in to the New World Mall instead. Bottom floor has a couple of food stalls. Second is a grocery store. More food on the third I think. Royal Queen is the top billing. I haven't been to a legit Dim Sum place in some time. Starving though and the idea of having food immediately was appealing. Man. Look at the selection. Everything hot and fresh. I had the rice paper wrapped donut for the first time ever and honestly, what's up with that?! Definitely give it a try if you like the Taiwanese donut. There was dessert as well. Other typical dishes available. You can also order off the menu if you prefer bigger dishes. Honestly my family enjoyed the food for our first time being there , however when my family and I had discussed with multiple servers about accomodations because of a medical condition ( Silent reflux ) , and asked for plain steamed chicken , they gave us the regular steamed chicken with the shaoxing wine and scallions. Don't get me wrong that's a great dish for someone who can eat it. But it felt very unprofessional. As a family we even pre planned what we were going to order , we even came at a less busier time. I get that restaurants like this prepare things ahead of time , but it's disappointing to see that accomodations for medical conditions are not much of a priority here. We hosted a party here Royal Queen and it was a disaster. We rented what we thought would be a private room off the side of the restaurant turned out to be only make-shift ultra thin panel dividers separating us from (what we thought would be a private party) and ended up be in the MIDDLE of a wedding! Our so-called private party was accessible only by walking through the middle of a wedding and next to another party who were karaoking (really badly!) This restaurant did not inform us that there would be a wedding at the same time! We asked if there is anything going that the same night we would host our party, and their response was no. What a liar! Our guests were horrified by this and to top off my baby had to deal with all that noise, from the loud wedding and then the horrible karaoke, all separated by thin panels. Went here for dim sum on a Sunday afternoon and was able to get a table for 7 pretty easily. They have dim sum carts until about 2:30-3 pm. I liked that they put a lot of shrimp in the shrimp dumpling. I wish the turnip cake was pan fried a little bit more so it would be crispier. I appreciated the wide variety of dim sum that they had. I saw a TikTok recommending the dim sum at Royal Queen, so I decided to give them a try. These days, the quality of dim sum in the neighborhood has really taken a nosedive and unfortunately, Royal Queen does not prove to be the exception. The restaurant is located on the top floor of the New World Mall, and the space is absolutely grand and built to entertain (think high ceilings and chandeliers galore). I think I would be open to return for dinner service, but currently I don't think the quality of their dim sum warrants a revisit. There was an extremely limited selection available when we visited on a Sunday morning around 10am, which frankly I find unacceptable as these are prime dining hours. What few dishes were available like the siu mai and har gow were overcooked and mushy. Located at the top floor of New World Mall, Royal Queen had the perfect opportunity to make a grand entrance a decade ago. Instead, it faced one of the most tumultuous starts for a dim sum spot, plagued by poor service, mediocre food, and frequent price hikes. Following the pandemic, they've managed to stay afloat and correct its course. The changes have been met with praise: the food and variety has improved drastically, the service is an improvement over what it once was, and the name 皇后名粥 which is "Queens Famous Congee" seems well-deserved. One area that they've never struggled in is the ambiance. The interior is well-lit, spacious, and with enough gaudy decor to keep the mood festive and ideal for banquet gatherings. They even deserve kudos for the cleaner bathroom and touchless faucets. Folks who enjoy the nostalgia will be pleased to know this is still one of the few places that incorporates push cart dim sum (#1). Some of the highlights have definitely been the siu mai, silky soft cheung fun rice noodles, a fragrant sticky rice in tea leaf, and a very tasty bbq pork pastry. I was also pleased with their fried taro dumpling and congee options. Of course, there were some misses, which were the pork spare ribs, sesame balls, cow tripe strips, and egg tarts. Their premium plates, such as the truffled siu mai, or the scallop medallion dumplings are fine but not for the upcharge. I find that their dinner variety is more appealing and wedding receptions are actually halfway decent. Where I think a lot of their snafus lie is in the latter, in which special occasions are completely overshadowed in lapses in service. I realize they're better than what they were, but for many large parties that require extra coordination, the risk is still very high for some kind of mishap. The foods are really bad and the dim sum cart people come over were super pushy, and wanted us to grab everything. The foods are pretty bad and they pretty much add sugar in everything. And we ordered tea, which is $6 a pot and they never came to refill it for us. There's a sign saying we get free parking eating there, but turns out it has to be at least $100 to get free parking, or after 6 pm. Their manager and waitress are pretty rude. My cousin had a birthday party here and it was overall a good experience. The location is a little hard to navigate but it is located on the fourth floor of the Grand Mall. After they consulted with each other, informed that we will only be given the seafood noodle dish as a lunch item ($29.95) and everything else we will have to order from the dinner menu. we decided to order everything in the dinner portion and pay the price, but only to discover the noodle dish was actually more expensive during lunch. Dinner price $26.95. Not OK. After a short wait food came and we enjoyed our meal pouring behind the incident we just had. Upon finishing we requested the bill only to find out that we were charged for tea. We did not have tea. Upon inquiring, we were told that because we were served tap water in a glass, there's a tea fee per person. Not ok. Unheard of. We felt again we were taken advantage of for a few dollars where they can. The dinner bill came out to about $200 which we did not mind paying for good food & service but we will not be served in this way.
