Came here for Saturday lunch and was surprised to find it pretty empty except for one other table, especially given that it's gotten a decent amount of English press over the years (including a Chronicle article). The highlight was probably the duck blood vermicelli soup, which is hard to find. The rendition here was actually pretty tasty and authentic. Royal signature pork feet jelly I didn't love - I found it a bit liquidy at parts. Couple's delight was also not the best rendition I've had. The beef pancake roll was tasty, but again nothing standout. Deep fried lamb leg was pretty tasty, tender flavorful meat. Lamb with scallions was tender but way too oily for me. The space feels dated and a bit depressing - sure most Chinese restaurants aren't that nice, but even compared to other ones in the area, this one still felt dated. read more

Great food, nice people! Came on the late side of a Sunday with my teens. They were a bit quiet and s service was very swift and accommodating. My kids are not very adventurous diners so we stuck to some basics but everything was delicious, serves promptly (and piping hot/fresh). We particularly enjoyed the spicy chicken in a basket, and crisp fried mixed noodle, as well as chicken egg-drop soup. This place was featured on an episode of of Check Please, Bay Area so we had to try when we were in the area. What brought me in was the spicy prawns and scallops. Looked so good on TV. I didn't think the actual dish looked quite as good. The prawns and scallops just weren't as prominent in the actual dish. It was still pretty good and quite spicy. I actually like our other two dishes better. The dry sautéed string beans were cooked just right and the crab meat fried rice hit the spot. Portions were generous so we took some home. We've had a generally decent experience over the years at Royal Feast but our experience today was so disappointing. I had placed an online order at 5 pm for a pick up time of 5:30. When my husband went to pick up at the restaurant, they told us what they didn't even see the order! They ended up making it then but were not even apologetic about their mistake - extremely frustrating when we had two hungry toddlers at home waiting. On top of that, they replaced one of the vegetables that we ordered for a cheaper alternative without even telling us! We clearly paid for a choy and they gave us bok choy. Peking duck - no longer need 48 hours in advance. We ordered right when they opened at 11am on a Saturday. this was good. great even maybe. very juicy and meaty. the duck soup they made was rich and umami. cleansed your soul albeit a little oily. lol I only had a bite or two of the stirfry they did with the rest of the "meat/bones". that was meh. shrimp in creamy sauce - ??? I still don't know what this was suppose to be. photos had shown it with strawberries and describing it as dessert. but we pretty much got...honey prawns? I mean it was really tasty. lol pork belly in garlic sauce - oh boy, not sure what I was expecting, but this was oily and HEAVYYYY raw garlic as heck. not for the weak. tomato egg and noodle - this was okay. they didn't rinse the noodles after boiling so it was a clump when packaged. but alright flavor. we wanted to try this "squirrel fish" dish but they didn't have the right fish so we got a fish fillet and eggplant dish that was not bad. decent. overall, solid Chinese food but just not quite what I was expecting? I've ordered Door Dash out of Royal Feast and really enjoyed it, so we finally decided to stop by and dine in person. We were not disappointed! The servers are really attentive, and even though we showed up once 10 minutes before the kitchen closed, we never felt rushed. We've tried a few different dishes and havent' had a miss yet. Some of our favorites include the Couple's Delight, Chongquing chrispy fried chicken, and the Mapo Tofu. The beef brisket in spicy numbing soup rice noodles are also really good. The Szechuan fried rice is also some of the best fried rice we've had. They manage to create a crisp on all the meat for both their fried rices and their chow meins. We're still making our way through their menu, but this has def become our go-to dinner spot. read more

If you're looking for excellent Szechwan food, go to Millbrae and hit the Royal Feast on El Camino. This place is top shelf high line Asian cuisine. Not only are their plates incredibly delicious, the presentation and serving size will floor you. You can order your dishes as hot as you want, and the quality of the ingredients are excellent. I recommend the Mapo Tofu and the chili chicken. They both have the perfect amount of Szechuan pepper in them that wakes up the flavor of the ingredients and leaves your mouth slightly numb. Have not had the chance to dine in, given the COVID pandemic. Luckily, we were still able to order takeout for my dad's and my birthday dinner at home. The restaurant offers a pre-order seafood boil that comes with duck, abalone, oysters, chicken, sea cucumber, dried scallops, and assorted mushrooms. Broth options are either a creamy chicken/pork-based broth or red Shaoxing wine-based soup. The waiter who took our order through the phone recommended the former, so that's the option my family chose. Upon pickup, the meats were already cooked, so all we had to do was reheat the broth and serve. Couldn't be easier than that, right? This meal was absolutely delicious! Super simple, yet the broth was so flavorful, that everything tasted luxurious. I believe the total cost for the dish was about $200 (tax not included), but we received high-quality cuts of meat. Plus, we had plenty of leftovers to last us the next day. Another dish my dad recommends (which I haven't tried, since I'm not in the Bay Area as often) is the kung pao chicken. read more

We got the braised pork belly with chestnuts ($14), which was quite good. The meat wasn't quite as tender as I like it, but the flavor was good. I loved the cabbage dish ($11) - I swear I ate the entire cabbage. It was really tender and flavorful. The pork and chives dumplings ($9 for 12) were a hit as well. I didn't really like the cold pigs feet jelly ($9) as much, but I think it is an acquired taste. They also have a selection of desserts. Delicious meal! Came in with a party of 6 with reservations on a Sunday night, but wasn't really busy at all. Got seated promptly, with tea at the table. Food came out pretty quickly after we ordered, which we got a lot of! Definitely the stand out dish was the Peking duck, which we did order in advance when we made the reservations to make sure it was available. Big portion of duck with wrappers, cucumber, shaved scallions, and what I would assume is a house made hoisin sauce. The waiter was kind enough to get us another round of wrappers since there was a lot of meat. And a really nice surprise: it came with two more dishes, a really comforting duck broth, and the duck bones wok fried. The cumin lamb was also delicious, as were the Szechuan style dumplings. I rarely order fish dishes, but their fish fillets still managed to be perfectly cooked even though we took this to go. The broth they were cooked in was very flavorful and had a good amount of spice- recommended! -Chongqing Crispy Fried Chicken (Boneless, $18): I'm not a big fan of this dish, but this version was solid. The pieces of chicken were very crispy, and it got spicier as we ate it. -Sauteed Shredded Potato w/Vinegar ($12): I'm not a big fan of this dish either, but it was also cooked well. Everyone else liked it. -Dry Fried String Bean ($12): Solid dry fried string beans, and a good portion. -Szechuan Tan-Tan Noodle ($10): The noodles were just ok, but they give you a GIANT tub of the sauce. I loved all the numbing spices in the sauce, and it also had a good amount of spice. We used it as a sauce for all the other dishes. -Cumin Lamb ($19): Solid version of cumin lamb, and it was a sizable portion. This was enough food to feed 10 adults for almost 2 meals (we also had other food but didn't finish everything that we ordered), and we had some people with big appetites. We took my sister here for her birthday lunch so she could try a real royal cuisine. Unfortunately, most of the dishes were underwhelming for us. We really tried to like each and every dish. We started with the eight treasure duck which we ordered a week ahead. The duck was pretty tough, and the skin was not crispy. The "treasures" inside were good, lots of delicious sticky rice and chestnuts. But we just weren't impressed with the quality of the duck given the price. I saved some for my parents since we couldn't finish it, and they were not impressed either. Our only favorites were the sauteed shredded potatoes with vinegar and the crab meat and egg white fried rice. They weren't too greasy and were cooked perfectly. The rest of the dishes were drenched in too much sauce, including the braised fish maw with crab meat and braised Napa cabbage. The saving grace was dessert. We had the caramelized bananas which were sweet and ended the meal nicely. Customer service was good. We just were not impressed with the dishes we ordered. read more

I've dined here a half dozen times over maybe 6 years, always wonderful. Most recently in Feb '23, before that in Nov '22. In Nov '22, we were warmly greeted by the chef, to whom we returned that warmth. in Feb '23, that chef was not around, and our reception was cool, perhaps because we aging Anglos arrived trailing lunch hour to avoid COVID issues. I've loved every meal and everything I've ordered from this restaurant -- Royal Feast is the thing I missed most during the pandemic, so I was disappointed by that cool reception. I love the Cumin Lamb (worth driving MANY hours), and the Szechuan Style Hot & Spicy Fish Fillet. My wife, who doesn't dig spicy, loves Shrimp/Egg Napa Cabbage. There are many other things on the menu I'd love to try and that she would enjoy). The Chongquing crispy fried chicken is great, but DON'T take the dark meat option, which is chopped wings, more moist, but a PITA to eat. Tried to order the Fish fillet with garlic and eggplant Clay Pot, but it had to be ordered in advance. I've also enjoyed Hot and spicy shrimp with scallop, roasted fish with spicy numbing sauce. Let's hope the chef returns and attitudes improve. We WILL return when it fits our schedule -- we live almost 2 hours away, so schedule visits with appointments in the area. Love royal feast. The flavors from this place is just pure goodness and always a hit for my Szechuan cravings. Avid foodies might say don't order fried rice because it's usually nothing special but the special Szechuan fried rice is sooo worth it especially when you are craving a rice dish. The flavor and the amount of meat (beef, chicken, shrimp) is top notch. I always order the chongqing fried chicken boneless from this place. And I always order it with extra chicken - half order more. Because it's that good. If I order royal feast I will always order this dish. This is my first time ordering steamed fish with pepper on top, this dish also had some tofu in it. Flavors were great, it had a slight sour spicy to it, a bit different from the usual fish dish im used to from this place. Overall royal feast is my go to Szechuan place. Disappointed. I wanted to love this place. I had high hopes. I was told that this chef has won many awards, including a prestigious French culinary competition award, that very few Chinese chefs have won. When you walk in, you see many awards and plaques on the left wall ... but these awards and culinary skills did not translate into my dinner. It was just dishes after dishes of plain old disappointment that lacked flavor, lacked sophisticated use of spices, lacked quality ingredients, and simply did not taste good. Service was friendly yet subpar without much attention to guest or detail, with the restaurant was only 40-50% full on a Monday night. Tea was served luke warm, had to ask multiple times for refill (with yet another pot of luke warm, watered down tea bag tea). Now onto the dishes: 1) Signature pork feet jelly - this is the chef's award winning dish and this is the only good dish for the evening. It's different, flavorful and shows off the chef's culinary skills. Using the pork feet and skin, and the natural jelly found after boiling, spices were added after grinding down the feet into smaller pieces and resetting the pieces together in its own jelly. Brilliant. This dish makes eating pork feet a breeze and one would no longer have to chew around the bones to eat pork feet! You can just pop these pieces into your mouth and wala!, it's just like eating pork feet. lol. This dish is topped off by Chinese balsamic vinegar to heighten the flavor, while also balancing the dish with a bit of acid. Overall an excellent dish. Minor issue - this dish truly delivers when there's no bones. There were small pieces of grind down bones in the jellies. Not a big issue for me but it's not meant to have bones. 2) Abalones braised with 4 delicacies (fish maw, sea cucumber, beef tendon, and quail eggs) This dish was my splurge of the evening and it was a big disappointment. The quality just isn't there. They used the cheapest possible sea cucumber and dish maw. Then, beef tendon and canned quail eggs, paired with a mild sauce (many places serve an intense abalone sauce that screams...) THIS, is NOT that sauce that I had hoped for. With perfect consistency and color, yet bland as heck. 3) Large bean sprouts with garlic How can you even mess up this dish.!?! A Chinese classic vege dish and the large bean sprouts are often pricier ... this dish was WAY too salty. The bean sprouts was also old (and / or not fresh)... think unable to chew through the stem. ugh. 4) Fish Filet in Chili Oil A classic Szechuan dish - this dish is supported to use the chili's and soak in the oil, the using the hot oil to cook the fish. The result was supposed to be the fragrant of the chili yet the dish itself not very spicy. This dish lacks the sophistication and missing the key numbing berry that gives that signature numbness to the lips. Overall flavor is ok. But I probably wouldn't order again. 3 out of 4 miss. The only dish that's good is the appetizer. Service is friendly but just not good. They took the order, dropped off the dishes and that's pretty much it. We had to ask twice for tea twice. Tea was served luke warm both times. Carpet is in dire shape. Looked muggy and smelly but didn't smell. Bathrooms were clean. Overall disappointing - probably wouldn't come back. read more

This is so close to my house and I'm kicking myself for only coming for the second time ever for takeout tonight. They currently have a limited menu for COVID shutdown, but are offering a deal where you can get 3 of the available entrees + egg flower soup and rice for $39.99. Note - if you order this for delivery (or pickup even) via Grubhub, this same deal will be $49.99. We got the twice cooked pork, creamy crispy shrimp and fish eggplant claypot. Everything was delicious and well-executed. I guess my only comment if I had to make one is that the twice cooked pork was a hair overcooked, but the flavor was on point. The creamy crispy shrimp was refined and balanced. And the fish eggplant claypot was flavorful and I was so impressed with how the fish and eggplant were cooked so perfectly. At a glance, this place is yet another Chinese place in Millbrae. Simple decor, quite a few large round tables for gatherings. If you look at their menu though, it's got a lot of interesting dishes, including abalone, fresh seafood, and claypots, things that would be served in a Chinese family banquet. I honestly didn't know what to order when I went (pre-Covid19), and asked for suggestions from the chef. They suggested the squirrel fish (which is a filet and fried treatment of a whole fish to puff it up looking like a squirrel, then slathered in sweet and sour sauce), mapo tofu, and then we also rounded it up with our usual favs like the dry fried string beans and the crispy fried chicken. The squirrel fish was a great recommendation. Not only was it pretty looking, probably one of the best I've seen out here, it was a crowd pleaser with the sauce and the fried fish meat. It's also a heck of a difficult dish to make, so kudos to the chef. The other dishes are pretty average -- delicious? Yes! Extraordinary? Not really. We are spoiled with all the delicious Chinese food around here, so there's serious competition. But I would say it's a great place to get a big family meal, and I really wanted to come back to try their more pricey dishes, like the abalone and the claypots, to see how they compare with what I grew up with.
