I haven't been back to this place since living in New Jersey over 10 years ago, and OMG!! The food is STILL outstanding! Talk about a place that continues to deliver on flavor, quality, and deliciousness! Whether you're craving chicken or pork BBQ, you simply cannot go wrong. The Brazilian BBQ is just as amazing as I remembered it. The flavors, the quality, and the overall experience make it well worth the stop. If you're traveling along Route 22, this place is an absolute MUST-TRY! Don't just drive by--stop in, grab some authentic Brazilian BBQ, and treat yourself to something delicious. Definitely a satisfying experience, and one I highly recommend. You will NOT be disappointed! Enjoy, bring your appetite, and fill up on all that deliciousness! I'll definitely be back! read more

I ordered grilled salmon, red beans & rice, and plantains. The plantains, rice, and beans were tasty but not worth $30. The salmon was extremely dry & hard. Highly disappointed! A waste of money. I threw the salmon in the trash before thinking to take a picture. read more

The food was ok, I ordered the chicken and plantains. The plantains were delish! The wait wasn't long for the food. However, I cannot speak to the inside of the restaurant as my husband made the pick up. read more

Finally got to check out this bbq joint located off 22. Really good Portuguese style bbq, I could smell it walking into the place! I ordered my take out order through seamless but then saw a wing deal and ordered extra because it was too good to pass up! If you go here, make sure you don't miss the exit, it comes up really quick! Highly recommend getting the bbq chicken and the sauces that come with it! read more

Very casual style restaurant. Mostly people order takeout food. We've been going here for decades & thought I'd written a review before. I guess not; they have great food - 1/2 or full trays of BBQ ribs & chicken that are served with your choice of 2 of these: Fries, Yellow rice or black beans (most places don't have the latter 2 items). That's partly why we drive the distance instead of a local Portuguese restaurant. They also have sautéed fish fillet. They have Homemade Flan !! For the take out, it's not always ready when you arrive. It's helpf if you speak Spanish when you call. read more

Stopped here for lunch because I was in the area. Used to go here years ago, but haven't been here for awhile. First of all the girl behind the counter seemed more interested in talking on the phone than taking my order. Finally got her attention and ordered the half order of picadinho , which was posted on glass as a special for 8.99. Gave her my card and was charged 11.99. I said wait a second it's right here for 8.99 and she says I should have taken that down and it's already been charged to your card. Then she say do you want fries or beans and rice. I said beans and rice and got fries and rice. Anyway , it was tasty but the whole episode was painful. read more

Who doesn't love Portuguese BBQ? It's a silly question because everyone should love Portuguese BBQ. My family has platters like this pretty often, I feel like I've grown up on them! My mom came over for dinner but instead of cooking, we went with a few trays from here. We got the chicken with rice and salad and the salmon with rice and beans. And of course a side of fried plantains. The chicken was amazing, juice and soft and so much flavor. My mouth is watering just writing this review. The salmon was also delicious and seasoned so well that it even tasted great cold the next day but it was a little dry. Overcooked fish is hard to bring back to its full glory so that's the only thing. Other than that it's all delicious and you can't go wrong. My tips are to skip the fries for take out because they get cold and soggy quick in my experience. And also to get extra beans! I love the black beans and there are just never enough. Also, don't skip the fried plantains. So good. Enjoy! read more

Extremely Disrespectful and Unwelcoming This establishment's treatment toward Black customers and delivery drivers is outright disrespectful and unacceptable. I visited Route 22 BBQ on 11/6/24 at 2:30 pm to pick up an UberEats order, and the experience was shocking. Upon entering, I quietly waited as two white customers were served in a calm, respectful manner. When my turn came, however, the man behind the counter immediately started yelling, repeatedly shouting "accept it now!" before I could even confirm the order. I tried explaining that I needed to take a photo of the food as part of UberEats protocol, but he only got louder. His volume and aggressive tone were so unsettling that even the kitchen staff stopped to see what was happening. I remained calm and attempted to de-escalate, but he refused to hand over the food, saying I didn't have to take it. It was apparent that my presence as a Black person was treated differently from the white customers who faced no such hostility. No one--especially someone doing their job--deserves to be humiliated and yelled at like this. It's clear that this restaurant has no respect for Black customers or delivery drivers, and I would caution anyone against supporting an establishment with such a disregard for basic decency and respect. read more

Was so excited to see that my favorite Brazilian/Portuguese BBQ spot is now on Uber Eats! I've been going here for 20 years and never without being completely satisfied! The food is delicious, always fresh and the portions are generous. The salad was smaller than in past orders (they used to give a tray, now it's a container) but with prices the way they are, it's still the freshest salad and worth every penny! I guarantee we get at least 5 meals from it for $85.04 I got: Half Chicken Lunch combo (yellow rice/fries) Whole tray Beef Ribs (black beans/yellow rice) A tray of Garlic Broccoli Maduros Salad Extra hot sauce Extra Dressing This included the fees, delivery and a $6 base tip. I tip cash for those that don't leave my food or give attitude. read more

Talk about flavorful! I ordered from Route 22 bbq and ordered the ribs and chicken combo! DELICIOUS! The pork ribs were so tender and juicy bursting with flavor and a little char. The chicken was addictive, not to mention the portion was more than generous with rice and fries! I ordered from Uber eats and everything was still piping hot and fresh! I will be back for more! read more

So I did something crazy and moved during this Pandemic. I'm grateful to my new home, and even more for my new local haunts to grab this or that. I don't know about past reviews of rude service, but the first time I was here, I did have to yell through my mask to get my order understood! It's no reflection of the staff, who btw couldn't have been more polite to this newbie. Yes, it's located in a not so glamorous strip on Rt 22, but DANG. the food here beats BBQ closer to me. A short drive brings much satisfaction. This really is the closest taste to Newark's Ironbound BBQ All walks and kinds line up, call in, use the app and happily wait in their cars, outside, or inside. Have had the Chicken (actually better than Newark, Super Juicy!), the ribs (generous!), the Salmon (Again generous and Yum Yum!)... I will have to try the Pichana some time. Even if you get the mixed veggies, try the Collard greens!!! Garlic and the greens must be healing, No?! read more

Route 22 BBQ will quickly become your go to place for Brazilian owned and run Portuguese BBQ, whether or not you know about or have had Portuguese BBQ before. Succulent is the term which most comes to mind because "ALL" the food, from the principal meat dishes to all the side dishes are fresh, well prepared, (never over or under cooked) and just incredibly rich, flavorful and absolutely juicy. You will feel quite well nourished after dining at this wonderful place, whether you eat in or take out. If you are like me, you will absolutely fall in love with their side house sauce and want to put it on everything. I am getting hungry just writing this review. I highly recommend. read more

What a value! I ordered the Pork sandwich with an added side of rice because I expected to be extra hungry, but I was so wrong. This $8 sandwich is HUGE, AND comes with a side of fries. On top of that, the $3 rice side was a ton of rice. Everything was very tasty, too. Among our group we got sandwiches, ribs both pork and beef, steak, and collard greens, and it was all very good. I took half of my sandwich home with me, which anybody who has ever eaten with me knows, is not something I do often, if ever. read more

This is an actual Brazilian style Churascaria. They cook the meats over an open rotisserie with wood and charcoal. You can not beat the price for the portion they serve. You can get whole or half platters, or combo platters. For $21.00 I got half Linguica and a half rack of ribs. This was 6 sausages and 6 ribs, enough yellow rice and black beans for at least 4 people and a pound of Sweet Plantains. The flavors were intense. They cook meat here just like they do at Texas de Brazil and it's awesome on every level. The portion size is huge and enough to share. You can eat inside at the dining area, or just get it to go, which is what a lot of people do. Food takes like 20 minutes to make, but it's grilled right in front of you. Call ahead and avoid the wait. Don't let the unassuming outside confuse YOU...This place is absolutely awesome. read more

I've sampled their fare on 3 separate occasions throughout the last two years. Each time has been consistent. Although they claim to be a Portuguese BBQ joint, the flavors resemble their Brazilian counterparts. Either way, consistency in this genre outside of the Ironbound area of Newark is rare. You should eat this food. Today my best friend ordered a tray of the pork ribs, a tray of the short ribs, and a plate of the chicken. All proteins were served on a bed of yellow rice and black beans. The pork ribs and short ribs were straight fire. Not fire as in hot, but fire as in bomb! The chicken was a little on the dry side, this knocks them from that elusive 5-star rating. But this isn't a strictly to-go joint, even though the counter was packed with people waiting for their orders. They also offer a dining room, which was completely empty at 6pm today. You really can't go wrong with the pork or short ribs. I suggest you skip the chicken unless you plan to douse them with vinegar or their sweet sauce. The yellow rice and black beans are a necessary addition to the meal and are great complements. Parking may be a hassle depending on how busy their counter is with to-go orders. I'm ready... read more

This is an underrated spot. It's right by the Vauxhall Ave exit on Route 22 .The problem is that there isn't anything else in the area. The food is good, but short of spectacular. Great Food, Great Value. Make sure you order the Chicken Soup at $2.00 a serving. I enjoy the BBQ chicken with rice and black beans. Portions are HUGE, enough to feed two people. I do drive 5 miles to order from here. Along the way, I pass many BBQ restaurants. Highly recommend. read more

my regular stop for good bbq at cheap prices!!! BBQ ribs good.. BBQ chicken gooood. White rice! Interestingly enough that's good to! I usually order either a half order of ribs or chicken with white rice and fries for only around $7 for portions that are enough to feed 2! It's also great with vinegar sauce that you should always ask for on the side. Also I have to add that the ribs you get here are meaty. When compared to other portuguese like restaurants around the area you'll find that there is not really much meat. Over here it's a different story. Definitely a place to check out for a good meal at low prices. Don't forget the white rice! read more
