Solid Mediterranean bowls, salads, and pitas topped with a variety of fresh ingredients and perfect for a relatively tasty, quick, and affordable meal. The concept is pretty similar to CAVA -- you can either build your own by choosing a base, main, and toppings, or you can pick from one of their chef-curated options. I usually opt to build my own with their salmon fillet or roasted butternut squash over kale, and topped with all the veggies and hummus. All of their veggies are super fresh, and their sauces all pack a ton of flavor (watch out for the spicy ones -- they actually are quite spicy). Their salmon fillets tend to be very small and a touch dry, as I assume they've been sitting under the heat lamp for a while, but they still pack a good flavor. Although the food is solid, it's generally not my first choice for fast-casual Mediterranean fare, as (1) they're not always aware of which allergens are in their food, and (2) despite being a fast-casual spot, service can often be quite delayed. Starting with the first -- the staff is wonderful at handling dietary restrictions; they'll put on new gloves, make sure your order is on a clean service (i.e., new foil or bowl), and avoid working on other orders at the same time as yours. However, I'm worried they haven't been told what all the allergens are in all of their ingredients. For example, I've received their gluten-free falafel pita box at several catered office lunches, and, unfortunately, ended up feeling pretty sick afterwards. Although I appreciate that they have a gluten-free pita (although it does taste pretty dismal) and that they have gluten-free options for desserts and sides, I don't believe their falafel is gluten-free (or maybe it's something in the rice or one of the toppings...I'm not entirely sure what it is or if there's just some cross-contamination, but something in those boxes definitely isn't sitting right with me). Beyond dietary restrictions, the only other drawback to Roti is that it's not always as speedy as advertised, which is not at all the fault of the employees. Every time I go in, there are usually only 1-2 people working the entire restaurant, fielding a slew of both in-person and mobile orders. This naturally creates a delay in getting out all orders; for example, I'll sometimes wait upwards of 30+ min. for a line of five or so in-person customers because the staff is so swamped with mobile orders. On the flip side, if you get a mobile order, definitely go to pick it up instead of using their delivery service (which includes third-party apps like UberEats, as Roti opts to use their own drivers for those services). I usually have to wait over 45 min. for a delivery order, despite the quoted wait time of 15 min. and that my apartment is less than 2 miles away from the restaurant. All in all, I think Roti is a solid place for fresh, flavor-packed Mediterranean bowls, salads, and pitas. However, I would recommend caution if you have dietary restrictions or if you're in a huge rush. read more

Wanted this to work for a quick take out order but it didn't - beware if you have food allergies! Food: I ordered a gluten free falafel salad, and appreciated that it was very customizable. The server changed his gloves, put GF pita on a foil, and made sure he took care of the previous order before mine. The problem? I don't think the falafel itself is gluten free! I had a rough night. Pita also was not very good. Service: The young man behind the counter was friendly and apologetic for the long wait. I do wish he would have checked if the falafel itself was gluten free (as I couldn't find the info online). I think this could be okay for those without dietary restrictions needing a quick meal. Delicious fast casual Mediterranean food bursting with flavor, better than Cava! While Cava is good, Roti has higher quality and better ingredients with more manageable portions. The turmeric rice is very flavorful and love to the fire roasted veggies. It's nice to not have to choose my protein between falafel or veggies. I can get both at Roti with a scoop of veggies without getting skimped on the falafel. At Cava, I would always have to choose between the two or get skimped on something! The fluffy cous cous and crispy falafel are quite tasty. All the sides and hummus, garlic lemon and spicy roasted red pepper dressings are flavorful. It's hard to go wrong! The chocolate chip cookies are a hit/miss depending on the location and time of day. If you can catch a freshly baked cookie out of the oven, they are hands-down the best cookies in DC with a a crispy shell and soft and goey inside. However if they've been packaged for hours, they taste stale and need to warm them up - not a fan. These sadly were stale! I came into Roti today for the first time for a quick lunch and was pleasantly impressed with my meal. I honestly expected it to not be as good, since it's sort of a faster-food option. I was wrong, it was delicious . I ordered a rice bowl with the roti chicken, then added both types of cabbage, carrots, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, feta, the classic hummus and vinaigrette on top. I think the deciding factor for me was the hummus, it added a great flavor to my bowl, and when I tried my partners bowl with the yogurt, it didn't stand out to me. I definitely would recommend the classic hummus to tie your dish together! They also included a medium sized pita on the side, which I really appreciated. The workers were also very nice and helped us choose what we wanted to eat by giving recommendations. Have only had the opportunity to eat at a Roti twice, during some different trips. Both times I've had a wrap with chicken, and boosted w/ hummus, pickled onions, feta, and some other things. I've been happy every time. It tastes fresh and wholesome, without sacrificing flavor. The chicken is not dry, I've found. You'll genuinely feel good after eating it, verses eating something more rich or heavy or fried for example. People often say, the concept is like Chipotle but for Mediterranean food, and I think that's true. That said, very subjectively, my wraps here have been better than what I typically get at a Chipotle. Another comp you'll hear is Cava, but my limited experience eating this is better than Cava. read more

It had been years since I last ate Roti. I had it again yesterday and was quite happy with it, I went in and ordered the cauliflower and added salmon to it and paid $15.95 total. Today I went in again and ordered the exact same thing and was charged a total of $18.15. I told the cashier about the change in price and she said that since I got double protein I was charged double. Very confusing because the chili tahini cauliflower is included in the base price for the bowl. I paid for it and when I got back to the office I went to the online ordering to see if the price would be the same. I added the saffron rice first, then I selected my main protein and added the chili tahini cauliflower, next it asked if I wanted to add another protein and I selected the salmon, the total price came to be the same I had paid yesterday! I like Roti Modern's concept of customizable Mediterranean dishes at a affordable price. Each meal ranges from $9-$13 depending on your order. There's a wide variety of protein, vegetables, carbs and condiments to top of the entrees. My favorite here so far is the is the falafel in the wrap with hummus and slaw. I tried the Classic Pita but the chicken was a bit dry to me. If you don't want to customize your own entree, they also have a set of specials with ingredients already preselected. The one thing that wasn't appetizing was when one of the staff members used his hand to wipe of some food scraps of the counter and then proceeded to wrap someone else's food order with the same hand. Yes, cleanliness is important but not in the middle of prepping someone's meal. Maybe that's why their health score was 87 out of 100. When my order looks exactly like the yelp photo submitted by the business owner-- Roti did that!! I have gone sparingly to Roti in downtown DC and have always left satisfied. They serve chipotle style Mediterranean food, evidenced in their name, though "Roti" is questionably masala vibes lol. I was ambivalent with this NoMa location due to poor ratings but after one order experience (ubereats, weekday lunch time) I'm pleased. The chicken roti is my go-to! At just $10 Roti offers such a wide array of frills to accompany your protein choice; red cabbage, feta, olives, hummas etc... 13 condiments at your behest! All of my Roti bowls have been fresh and the taste is consistent throughout the chain. They even have alcohol!! One of the best fast food places I have tried. The food was fresh and flavorful. You get to choose rice, wrap or salad as the base and then you can add protein and toppings. I did take away with Roti Chicken wrap and spicy lamb balls. The roti chicken has a nice marinated spices and roasted on a grill. It was very tender and loved the taste. I also got the spicy lamb ball on the side. This was amazing too. Another best part is you get a variety of options to add as toppings like couscous, pickled onions, mix veggies, salsa and more along with various options for sauce. I went back again the next day to try the salad. I only hope the service improves as the lady who was the cashier , her attitude seemed as if she was disinterested ! I'm not trying to compare this place to a high-dollar restaurant, nor would it be fair to compare it to McDonalds or the like. Roti, in my opinion, is a solid 4/5 fast-casual restaurant. Now, on to the review: Roti tastes much better than fast food, and it's so much better for you! I am a big fan of the salads-- you can choose your protein (salmon, chicken or steak roti, chicken kabob, falafel, or just veggies). Then you can top with all the amazing sides, sauces, and toppings you want! I love them all. Seriously. If salad isn't your thing, you can make a sandwich with pita or a rice plate. BUT due to the TASTELESS rice and save for the S'hug, the TASTELESS chicken, it drops to 2.5. When you think Mediterranean, you automatically think flavorful and this is not the case at all. I actually walked around to other people in my office to see what they thought and they agreed. So perhaps, to give Roti the benefit of the doubt, it may have been an off batch, but I don't believe that that is accurate. Again, the service was perfect, super nice people and even one of my old students all waited on me courteously and professionally!! But as for the staple, uhhhhhhhhh, probably never again. While this is my absolute favorite lunch spot in the NOMA/Union station area it's still a hit and miss... so why the 4 stars?? Because the miss is still a hit! For instance, today I ordered the chicken roti pita pocket... the pita pocket just came out of the oven and was made with too much yeast (Says the Manager) so it kept falling apart while he was making it for me. He actually threw away 3 of them before finding one that would actually hold the toppings. Also today the Falafel was fried a little too long for my taste, kinda dried out.. but still the peas and spices are awesome. I got the rice plate with roti chicken, dill yogurt & cucumber sauce, tomato & cucumber, humus, and cous cous. The chicken was on the dry side. The rice plate comes with a side of pita, which pairs well with the humus. They gave a heaping scoop of humus too - more than enough for the rice and pita. If you order the rice plate, you're limited to three toppings only - additional toppings will cost extra. If you want more than three toppings and don't want to pay extra, I recommend going with the salad - it's "healthier" and you can get all your toppings. If you get a wrap (the other possible vehicle), you can really only get as many toppings as the wrap can fit. It wasn't busy at 11:30am, but as it got closer to noon, the crowd picked up and service slowed. All in all, this is a nice place to grab a fast casual lunch, and the Mediterranean menu is a great alternative to Chipotle or its neighboring sub/sandwich joint. read more

I'm told that people come here for lunch and it's packed. However, I've come here only for dinner (given that it's close to home) and the few times I've been, it's been completely empty, so my saying that the service is quick might not be accurate if you go at peak (i.e., lunch hour). From this location I've ordered only the chicken kabob, which is the best I've had for the price (around $8 plus tax). The chicken kabobs are made-to-order so sometimes there is a wait. If there is, they are generous enough to give you a free soda cup on the house. The staff members who work here are particularly friendly and cordial, and they engage with you as they prepare your food, which is a nice touch. One of them also knows sign language, which is cool and helpful (and maybe necessary given that Gallaudet University is nearby). Highly recommended! DOWNLOAD THE APP! Remember to download the free app and get a side of hummus or falafel for free just for downloading. You have to take a snapshot of your receipt to accumulate points (which is annoying because it's not automated) but it's a great idea if you're a frequent diner. read more

I've visited this Roti a couple times and I think I've figured it out . When you go from 11:30-2:00 expect to wait in line; expect them to possibly run out of things or skip steps (like offering you pita bread); don't expect service to be super personal . It's rush time , the goal is to serve as many people as possible. I've worked in the food industry before; I understand it can be hectic. That being said, I have experienced less than optimal service at this Roti before, but it's still cheaper than the Cava curiously placed next door (why put two places that are so similar right next to each other?), so I went . Today I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was friendly and accommodating. My falafel were moist and served fresh from out the frier. I've recently taken on veganism- I was pleased by the number of options I had. I ordered a half rice and half salad bowl, which isn't on the menu - but available by request. I added the spicy green s'hug and roasted red pepper sauces, then topped it with classic hummus , red cabbage, chick pea salad, tomato & cucumber salad, pickled onion , and fresh cilantro . It was bursting with flavor and delicious . The plates aren't as deep as Cava's but it's plenty of food for a great price . If you go on off hours, this Roti is pretty great . read more

Roti has really been a lifesaver in my efforts to eat healthy. The offerings are simple, fresh, and delicious. The salad with chicken kabob, and Roti chicken are very reasonably priced at under $10 and you can double your meat for only $2; they also have salmon kabobs for a few dollars more, but it's still a great meal at a great price. The platters and sandwiches/wraps are also a great bargain, and all delicious as well. Amongst the proteins, the chicken kabob is definitely my favorite, and a double portion is more than enough to make for a fulfilling meal and then some. To complement my protein, I usually opt for the s'hug sauce, which is labeled as "extra spicy" but it's maybe a notch or two below Siracha on the spiciness scale. The milder sauces are also decent, but I'm definitely a fan of s'hug. The proteins and sauces at Roti are all very good on their own, but their toppings for your salad, platter, or sandwiches are a great bonus. My personal favorite topping is the Spanish eggplant. This particular Roti location is especially clean, and the service a cut above the rest. The staff is very accommodating and friendly, and they make no hesitations to go the extra mile; whether it be putting on fresh kabobs upon request, or being especially generous with the toppings, they do their job and do it well.
