Rose Ave lives up to the praise they receive. My friend and I made a stop here as it was on our way to where we were going, and it happened to be during their Oishii berry collab. The wait was a bit longer than I would've liked, but I assume it's quicker when they aren't having special menu items. We ordered the strawberry matcha latte, the strawberry lychee rose donut, and the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, which is in a scallion bun. Everything was a hit. A short line formed even before 8 am on a Friday (we were visiting, on the way to the zoo), but it cleared quickly and they have seating for about 12 parties both inside and outside. Summary: very well done! The pastry's have a great way of taking on southwest Asian flavors and are good. If you're bored of regular pastry's, or are southwest Asian and missing some tastes of home this is for you! Food: the pastry's I got were well done. The pandan donuts filling was the perfect amount of sweet with coconut although the donut itself was a little too dense and not super super fresh. The mango sticky rice pastry was super well done! They use actual sticky rice and not just mango and coconut. The curry pastry's smelled super good, I'll have to try that next time. As a southeast Asian this really blew me away, I didn't think these two things could be combined. That being said they aren't the most quality pastry's, would get it if I was in the area. Atmosphere: wasn't super memorable, cute and clean though. Service: kind and polite. Final thoughts: I was apprehensive but these were good! These were some of the most delicious and unique pastries I've had! All of the pastries were perfectly flaky and flavorful. The coffee was also great and had a really nice ube flavor. I got the Thai curry tart, garlic scallion bun, pandan coconut donut, strawberry donut, and ube cheese kouign amann. There was a long line to get in, but I think that these pastries were worth it. I got in line at 9:05 on a Saturday and waited about 30 minutes. If you're planning to come on a weekend, I would try to get there are early as possible since this bakery is so popular. In my opinion, DC is a little lacking when it comes to top-notch bakeries. However, I'm very happy that Rose Ave bakery has been successful. I'm always looking for great laminated pastries, and this bakery does them very well. Sure, you can find bakeries in New York with pastries with a more flaky exterior and a more soft and light interior, but Rose Ave bakery does a pretty good job with their quality. Where this bakery shines however is their flavors. This bakery's flavors are right down my alley, with Asian flavors like Ube, matcha, black sesame, etc. Be prepared to wait, as there is usually a line on weekends that starts forming before opening, but the line doesn't usually take too long, and they don't run out of things as much as they used to. Came here for a business conversation and was shocked to find exceptionally limited seating. There was barely room for a couple of pairs to sit down and talk to each other and outlets are not very conveniently located next to each spot. I was also shocked by how dirty the floor was; there were dust bunnies flying around in each of the corners. I do appreciate the free internet. The drink availability was also a shock. They only have coconut and soy milk as alternatives and when I asked for my matcha to be made with an alternative, they informed me that their matcha drinks are pre-mixed with regular milk. That is a telltale sign of poor quality. While their pastries look delectable, I am unlikely to return here for anything but those. read more

Personally this place does donuts the way I like them; light and fluffy, not greasy, and not too sweet. Was visiting a friend and she had this on her list for awhile. We knew it would be crowded on a Saturday and there was a decent line when we got there, around 45 min after they opened. Could've also been busier because it was during August moon festival, so they had a moon cake special for the weekend. We tried almost everything, and it did not disappoint. My favorite was the sesame cookie. Might've been the most perfect cookie I've had--the outside crunch to center softness ratio was PERFECT. The pineapple bun was delicious (for anyone not familiar, it's the shape of a pineapple but no pineapple flavor). Bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich with scallion croissant curry butternut squash tart was such a scrumptious savory pastry. There are maybe 5 tables/long bench but not many people were sitting there, maybe because the line disrupted the ambiance. They provide water, which I appreciate! Love the pastries here. They're all very cute and nicely presented. The lychee rose donut is my favorite. It's sweet, but not overly sweet but also flavorful and very soft. I visited here on a Saturday late morning and there was a line outside of the door which I reconsidered if it was worth waiting for, which it absolutely was! I was extremely impressed by all of the pastries, baked goods and coffees we tried at Rose Ave. Rose Ave is a small space and usually pretty crowded so unfortunately it's not a spot I would suggest to spend hours at a cafe studying or working. Wanted to see what D.C.'s boulangerie game was like while I was in town and was not let down! Rose Avenue and its Asian-inspired menu was a must-go for me; I love Asian chain bakeries like Paris Baguette and Tours le Jours, but have never found their pastries to be the right kind of flaky. I stopped by Rose Avenue on my way to the Zoo and struggled to pick a pastry and drink--they all looked incredible. I settled on the scallion pancake croissant and the ube cream cheese kouign amann, and the mango matcha. Shout out to the staff at the counter who took the time to give me recommendations even though the place was pretty busy. The dough on both pastries was excellent, but for me, the scallion pancake croissant was the standout. The scallion flavor was prominent; perhaps the butter used to laminate the croissant already had scallion in it. The ube kouign amann had a nice, shattery panel of caramelized, buttery sugar, but I struggled to taste the ube in the cream cheese filling. The matcha was a bit disappointing, as it tasted watered-down and had more milk than matcha. All in all, I enjoyed Rose Avenue, but think that some of the flavors could be amped up. read more

Oh my god. This was amazing. Very rarely do I think a bakery like this lives up to the hype, but Rose Ave was genuinely phenomenal. I think what I liked about it so much was that it was a bunch of Asian twists on non-Asian classics (kouign ammans, donuts, pastry puffs, etc) rather than just a traditional Chinese bakery (also good, but not the same thing). I got the strawberry lychee donut (4.5/5), the ube cheese kouign amman (5/5), and the thai curry puff (5/5). The most unique flavor to me was the ube cheese, but my favorite (maybe I'm biased) was the (savory) thai curry puff. Will definitely be back -- be warned, was a little expensive though. Also got a mango matcha (4/5), was good and had strong matcha flavor but nothing crazy. Friends got a mango basil donut (4.5/5) and a mango passion fruit donut (3.5/5) which I also tried. Line is long but went super quick. Workers are efficient. Super super crowded on a Monday morning, pretty limited eating. A lot of people (including us) had to loiter and stand around the entrance/on the street to eat. read more

My fiancé gave me a gift card for Rose Ave on my birthday (One of the many reasons why I Love Her) and I finally got the chance to visit their new location near the DC Zoo. Albeit parking may be a bit tricky in the area I suggest you make a couple loops around the residential neighborhood to find street parking. A short walk to and from the bakery wouldn't hurt right? Besides those delicious calories make it all worth it. Lol Expect a crowd especially during the morning rush or brunch hours on weekends. You'll be lucky to find seating, during these hours you'll hardly find a table inside. The staff do their best to accommodate everyone efficiently. I admit to their pastries are on the pricey side but hear me out. You get your money's worth. Their ube and lychee doughnuts are exquisite. Not too sweet just subtly perfect. I was staying at a nearby hotel and ventured out for some breakfast. A quick search led me to Rose Ave Bakery. Pastries are packed as you order but drinks take a little longer to be made. I ended up choosing the Szechuan Hotdog Croissant and the Ube Donut. The hotdog pastry was super flaky and the Szechuan mustard had a decent kick to it. My only complaint, if you can call it that, was that it wasn't very warm despite being under a heat lamp. The donut was stuffed with Ube cream, light, fluffy, and sweet without being cloying. Everything tasted great and I recommend it to my coworkers who were also at the same hotel if they were looking for a treat. read more

I tried Rose Ave Bakery years ago when they were just a pop-up at Pike & Rose and their baked goods were just ok, nothing I wanted a repeat of and nothing to go running back for (they had no savory goods or coffee at the time). On our way home from an event, we decided to make a pitstop here. I'm pretty sure I got one of everything on the menu because $72 for 2 coffees and an assortment of pastries is either an expensive breakfast or just breakfast. Banana Saigon Latte - Hubs got the hot and I got the iced. He said he preferred the hot version. I enjoyed my iced and the banana flavor was not terribly intense for me. I did not add any additional sugar or milk/creamer. If you don't enjoy anything with any kind of sugar, you will not enjoy this drink. Pastry Highlights: Thai Curry Tart, Garlicky Scallion Bun, Pandan Coconut Donut, Passion Fruit Kouign-Amann I was really leery of ordering the savory pastries at first, but they were all tasty and none of the flavors were a "kick in the face" like I was prepared for. I've been a big fan of Rose Ave bakery since the days they were just a pop-up of sorts in the DC food hall and they released their orders a week in advance online. I've since moved out of the DMV area, but when my wife and I recently came to visit, we knew one of the places we had to try was their true brick and mortar store in AdMo. And we are so glad we did! From before and after they moved locations, I've pretty much tried everything on their menu and everything is great. Seriously. It's a true passion project of incorporating Asian flavors into some amazing baked goods it makes me so so happy. My personal favorite items from the savory side is the hotdog bun and scallion bun. Both are so flaky and buttery and absolutely bangers when they're fresh out of the oven or gently warmed. Sweet side I like their kouign amman and ensaymada. Drinks their banana and ube lattes hit. But again, any flavors and ingredients you like will hit the spot! Line was crazy on a weekend, but it seemed like they never ran out of anything which is great and moved quick enough. If you can catch them on a weekday though, that's more ideal and a lovely space to study/work in. Anyways, not much more I can say about Rose Ave besides it's one of my favorite Asian-American bakeries and probably one of the best bakeries period in the DC area. 10/10, would try. read more

The hype about this bakery is for sure true! As a recent transplant from Southern California I loved the fact that they were donating proceeds to the fire relief so it was the perfect time to try them out. I have had a lot of donuts, but these were honestly some of the best I have ever had. I went with the passion fruit filled, milk bread with vanilla glaze and a savory garlic pastry. Rose Ave Bakery is so popular and often sold out of all pastries before I can get myself to wake up and stop by back when it was at the Block food hall (RIP). I'm sure with its new location in Woodley Park, it's still really popular, but that also means it's even farther away from me. Thankfully, my friend stopped by Rose Ave this last Saturday and picked up a few donuts for us to try. I was able to try the PASSION FRUIT, PANDAN COCONUT and BLACK SESAME donuts which were still fluffy, yet chewy and fresh after a few hours. My favorite was the black sesame since it had a strong and nutty flavor. The passion fruit had a tart flavor that was surprising, but pleasant. The pandan coconut fell a bit short to me since it didn't have a very strong pandan flavor. Overall, solid donuts and would definitely stop by if I'm ever in the area. People hype this place up a lot and I would love to try other pastries, baked goods and coffee/tea drinks. read more
