Went here on a Wednesday night for dinner and it was packed! Not surprising after the experience we had. All of the employees from the hostess to the waiters were super nice and on top of everything. They kept the food and drinks flowing and checked in on us consistently. There was no wait for our table which was surprising since again, it was packed. Food was all really good. The only note I'd make is that the mashed potatoes were very yellow and mushy as if they just put way too much butter in it. Definitely dress to impress here because most people will be dressed up. The atmosphere and service at roots is great, and what you would expect from a restaurant in the city. The drink options are wide, and the popovers are a unique start to the meal. My brother had introduced me to the Roots Steakhouse in Morristown, which I had loved. So, I was looking forward to my recent lunch at their Summit location. While not as big or spacious as the Morristown one, Summit had a very rustic, masculine vibe. They had complementary, Roots-personalized golf tees near the front door, which made sense, as it really seemed like a place for the upscale, golf audience. We were seated at a round table in their middle dining room, which had one stone wall and the rest made of windows, which allowed us to watch the hustle and bustle around the restaurant. Once we got settled, we each received a large, cheesy and airy popover. Those fluffy pastries appeared to be so light that it was easy to overlook how fattening they probably were! I paired mine with one of the mocktails that was called something starting with the word, "Zest"...It contained the non-alcoholic spirit, Seedlip, as well as NA prosecco, and one of two gave the drink a slightly "off" flavor. The mocktail also had a bunch of fruity and citrus notes, which helped minimize the strength of the bizarre NA flavor that tried to immerge. We ordered a bunch of appetizers for the table, though I only sampled a few. The Yellowfin Tuna Tartare was excellent! The diced fish was extremely fresh and tender. It was served over crushed, ripe avocado, but the two layers were separated by crispy wontons, which was an unique take I had never seen elsewhere. The crunchies were texturally appreciated, though they could have included less of them. The whole thing was topped with fresh ginger, black sesame seeds, wasabi cream, and ponzu sauce. I adored the zest from the added ginger, which offered a real kick. The Crispy Wagyu Dumplings were too fried for my liking, but the steak inside was flavored with what we believed was soy sauce and perhaps sesame oil; it was a very interesting rendition. For my main course, I went with the Chopped Salad, which included iceberg and romaine lettuces, tomato, corn, broccoli, carrots, feta, cucumber, and asparagus. I thought that the salad could have used much more of each of the ingredients, as it was mainly lettuce. In fact, the included romaine was even a bit wilted. I had added 3 shrimp to the salad, though I found it odd that I would need to select a preferred number. It turned out that they charged $7 per shrimp, which had not been listed on the menu. Thankfully, they were jumbo-sized and more like prawns; they were also perfectly cooked and the best part of the dish. I had ordered the salad's black peppercorn dressing on the side, which I was thankful for, as it was very thick and creamy. While each person at the table had ordered their own entrée, we decided to share a few sides, though I did not personally try any of them. However, I particularly heard rave reviews about the Whipped Potatoes, which were very smooth. Lastly, it was one of my dining companion's birthdays, so the restaurant sent out a complementary ice cream sundae that was large enough for the 6 of us. The restaurant called it "The Roots Super Sundae". While I did not taste this either, it also received positive remarks. The monstrosity was served as a giant martini glass that was holding an ice cream cone bowl filled with chocolate and vanilla scoops. On the dish, surrounding the large glass, were a bunch of semi-sweet chocolate cups that held a variety of toppings like sprinkles and M&M's. There were also little pitchers of chocolate fudge. Essentially, it was a "build-your-own" ice cream delight, which was such a fun way to end our lunch. After having two excellent meals at two different Roots locations, I could honestly say that it was one of the top steakhouses in New Jersey. It was perfect for our special occasion meal and would be for yours, as well! read more

Ambience is great, classic dark wood bar, tasteful lighting, no televisions (amen!). This location had a weird and not-well-known unofficial "reservation policy" for bar seating which was annoying for those who were unaware (you'd be standing at the bar waiting for a space to open up, and when seats eventually turned over the bartenders would deny you a seat in favor of someone "one the list" - what??). I came here with my parents a few months ago. As usual, Roots rustic ambiance, excellent food/drinks and impeccable service did not disappoint! I ordered the surf and turf and it was cooked to perfection. Our server was prompt, polite and checked in frequently without being overbearing or annoying. The cocktails were unique and stellar. I'm so thankful that such a high quality restaurant exists in both Summit and Morristown. This steak house competes with all of the upper echelon ones in Manhattan. This is probably the best steakhouse I've been to. I originally had plans to have dinner in Manhattan for my 19th birthday with my friend, but after waiting an hour for the bus to arrive, we decided it was better to drive to Jersey. We heard about roots steakhouse from a friend and decided to give it a try. The hostess was so kind and immediately asked us what we were celebrating. After being seated, we were brought the most DELICIOUS bread and butter, and trust me, my father owns an Italian restaurant, and I have to say the bread at Roots was even better. The hostess soon brought me a birthday card signed by all the staff members. This was so sweet. For appetizers we got the calamari and crab cake, which were phenomenal. For dinner we got the petite strip steaks with mashed potatoes, asparagus, and french fries. There are many sides to choose from. Our server was amazing and gave us many recommendations. At the end of the dinner, because it was my birthday, our server brought out a huge ice cream sundae with candles and it was on the house!! Have gone here many times over the years and it can be inconsistent. Last night we went with another couple and it was excellent. We started with drinks. They give a good pour and make a good drink. For appetizers my wife and I split a chopped salad . Very good , but a bit underdressed. One of our friends had the tuna tartar and commented that it was very tasty and a nice portion. Our other friend had a Caesar salad and said it was good. For dinner we all had steaks. Prime cowboy ribeye, aged ribeye, NY strip, and one had the ribeye medallion special ( kinda looked like a big filet) Everyone really enjoyed their steaks. For dessert we shared a really delicious carrot cake. Service was very attentive. If it wasn't for the waiter spilling a martini on me, I would have had no complaints. The host wished us a happy anniversary and then were seated a nice, cozy booth. Our server Katia was very sweet and attentive. This is the seconds roots location I've had the opportunity to visit and unfortunately this location did not deliver the same quality of food or service. The location is inside of a building and felt crammed. The bathroom was outside the restaurant and the servers were confusing on who was actually taking the order. As for the food we reordered the onion rings and they were over battered and not cooked all the way. When we ordered our steak how we wanted the waiter insisted we order it a different way and we needed to send it back. The worst were the Brussels sprouts. They were soggy, very heavy smoky flavor and I the bacon was gummy. We also ordered the butter cake and it was not the same. Since we went for a birthday we received a complimentary sundae that comes with dry ice so that was pretty cool. Overall the dinner was average and not worth it the second time around. read more

Hubby got dried aged New York strip, and quote "was pretty good". It was our first time having roots steak sauce and we'd much prefer their version over the Peter Lugers. For drinks, I recommend the "You're a star" cocktail for someone who normally doesn't like the taste of alcohol. That someone is me. Though beware, although you don't taste the alcohol, I got tipsy after 3 sips so it's a strong drink. My husband got the old fashion which he enjoyed and got a second round of. Con: The sides were less than memorable. We got the cream of spinach and shaved Brussels sprouts with bacon. Cream of spinach was too salty according to my husband but I felt that it didn't have enough of that cheesy creamy goodness you'd expect from such a dish. Returned to Roots for my wife's birthday. She likes to go out for an expensive meal, if not a good one, on special occasions. Perusing the extensive wine list, they only offer a choice of two red wines under $70 a bottle. We got a decent 2017 Cabernet from Washington State. Apps were the jumbo shrimp cocktail ($18 for three shrimps) served over a bed of smoking dry ice, which was eye-popping. I was less impressed with my tuna tartare ($17). The tuna was minced very finely, like cat food, over a bed of insipid mashed avocado and salty soy sauce, topped with a small dollop of bland "wasabi cream". I would not order that again. My entrée was the 12 oz. filet mignon ($50). I ordered it medium-rare, and it was closer to raw in the middle. The steak was dry-seared and unseasoned. I failed to order any of the specialty sauces, and unlike my last experience here, the gratis house steak sauce was not automatically offered. I guess you have to ask for it now. Beef tenderloin is not the most flavorful cut, so I had to repeatedly douse the steak with salt and pepper from the shakers on the table. I would have preferred a grilled ribeye, but they only offer a 48 oz. tomahawk ribeye for two for $125. Our ala carte sides were the au gratin potatoes and the braised mushrooms. The mushrooms were delicious, the potatoes meh. We didn't order dessert, but the server presented my wife with a tiny scoop of vanilla gelato with a candle in it, and four bite-sized chocolate cookies on the house. The server was very friendly and personable, and the service flawless. If my critique of the food seems picky, I expect near-perfection when I am spending $250 for a two-course meal for two with the cheapest bottle of wine on the menu, plus tax and tip. There have been many times that I wanted to dine here, I finally had the opportunity. I really wanted to enjoy my experience but was let down. For being a walk-in, I was shown to a table rather quickly (much appreciated) however, expectations began to decline as soon as I realized I was sat not only at an unturned table but even the water coaster was dirty?? Also I was a bit confused at the different people who eventually did come to check in. Another server asked if he could get me more wine. A busser or two filled my water. When my waiter decided to come back over at the end of my meal, I asked to wrap my meal and for dessert. This is when I noticed he really seemed annoyed. Needless to say, he finally came back again - I ordered creme brûlée and asked for the check. He literally "yepped" me looking even more annoyed? Disappeared again, FINALLY dropped the check after the dessert was eventually dropped. Fine. THEN, he all of the sudden appears again- OPENS the check book literally right in front of me to make sure I signed, smacks it closed snatches it and left the table with it in hand??? I've never felt so unwelcome. With that being said, I understand that I came in at 9pm but I spent well over $100 on just myself and I am also very aware of steps of service and how things should be done. Especially with attitude at the end of my meal, I couldn't help but to be straight up offended.
