We celebrated a special occasion at Roots when visiting Summit and found it as good as ever. Our server, John Leone, took good care of us. We started with the seafood platter for four, bringing back fond memories of our first visit to this location. Scrumptious and well worth the market price. Entrees of beef Wellington, 16 oz. Kansas City steak were excellent, though the halibut was dry and overdone. Sides of creamed spinach and potatoes au gratin were superb. Flourless chocolate cake was excellent. read more

Food: very creamy burrata, fair portion for the price; the snow crab claws were overpriced...$24 for 3 small claws...definitely needed to ask how many would be for 1 order, won't repeat that mistake again; steaks were good; I had their Tailor plate with the petit filet and jumbo shrimp, the shrimp was cooked perfectly, not over at all; the steaks were a tad over but fine. The cowboy butter was worth it! The au poivre not so much. Their portions for the a la carte sides were decent for the price. We recently returned to Roots Steakhouse for a date night after remembering about how delicious the food was and how incredible the staff had been during our last visit, and wow, they somehow doubled down on both customer service and quality. We had an 8:00 PM reservation, and unfortunately it was a packed house that night. Dinner at a steakhouse in December is clearly a popular choice, so we completely understood. We initially waited outside (between the restaurant door and the outside door) for about 10-15 minutes. When they let us know there still weren't seats available, they kindly offered us drinks, which we declined, and we waited a bit longer. Since it was pretty cold, we eventually moved inside to wait at the bar. The hostess was the same one from my last visit, I wish I caught her name, but she is truly lovely. She continuously checked in on us and apologized for the wait. While I'm not sure exactly how long we waited, it was close to 30 minutes. My fiancé and I were totally understanding, these things happen, and we were just happy to eventually sit down and enjoy dinner. As soon as we were seated, they brought over two appetizers on the house, the shrimp and the burrata. Our waiter apologized and thanked us for our patience. This level of genuine kindness is something that rarely happens, and it immediately reminded us why Roots is one of our favorite local gems. The rest of the evening was exactly what you'd hope for: great service, incredible food, and a fun atmosphere. The couple seated next to us was celebrating their anniversary, and our waiter, John, serenaded them, and us as well. (That man can sing!!!) Roots is a traditional steakhouse, and sometimes that is exactly what you crave -- a plain piece of steak. I had dinner here with a large group, and we had a good time. I started with the lobster bisque, which was flavorful without too much cream. Then I had the filet mignon, but unfortunately, that was overcooked and dry. All ~10 steaks at our table were overcooked actually (1 star off). The steak flavor was still good, and the seared salt crust was nice. There were options to add sauces to the steak, like bernaise or hollandaise, but I am a purist when it comes to steak so did not add any. For the sides, I liked the sautéed mixed mushrooms and the whipped potatoes. For dessert, I had the warm butter cake, a plain yellow cake with blueberry compote; it was a little dry, but a decent dessert to follow a classic steak...which ironically was also dry. read more

Roots is a consistent, well-managed, old school steakhouse nestled in the heart of Summit. The food is always top-tier, and the service has generally been very strong as well. As for ambiance, the only "watch out" would be if you get stuck sitting in the long bench to the right when you first walk in. While this is great to eavesdrop, it can be disastrous if you get next to a bad grouping. I had that luck, sitting next to two people who seemed to only find joy in complaining, including sending back French fries and wine for various issues. My personal favorites here are the loaded baked potato and filet mignon. They've got a good French onion soup as well. I'm not a fan of the bacon slabs, but I think that's more a personal preference. read more

Would give it a 4.5. Went on a Tuesday afternoon to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Waiters were very attentive and courteous. We both got the aged cowboy steak as we like steaks cooked different ways. We were both very pleased. Also got the loaded potato which was large, plenty for 2-4 people depending on appetite, had thick bacon pieces but was a bit salty. Brussel sprouts were a bit tangy and with a little kick- pretty good It was cooked as requested and more tender than other steaks. Would recommend and look forward to returning. read more

Everything was great here, from the service at the bar to the super attentive dining room staff. They went above and beyond to make sure I was taken care of. I had a big bouquet of flowers that they offered to hold in the back for me since the booth was too small to lay them down next to me and they didn't fit on our table that was crowded with food and drink. The popovers with fresh butter are a delightful treat while you await your food. My steak was delicious and perfectly cooked. I'm giving out one of my rare five-star reviews because everything was perfect the night I went here. The staff goes above and beyond, and one of the hostesses even helped me with a fussy necklace clasp I couldn't quite get myself. Definitely worth the money to go back here again. I've been to the Morristown Roots, and I prefer the Summit location. The space itself is cozier and feels more special. read more

Celebrated my mom's bday. Smoked Old Fashioned were good, but no the special. The popovers were one of the stars of this restaurant. Perfectly executed!! Had French onion soup and the surf and turf. The onion soup was flavorful and probably one of the best "broths" I've ever had. However, for the price, the portion size was quite small and not enough cheese. The filet was perfectly cooked and temped and the two huge shrimp, while slightly overcooked (they were chewy), had good garlic flavor and enriched the steak. I also tried the lobster / cherry pepper sauce add on and again, while the lobster was over cooked / chewy, the flavor was awesome and the cherry pepper provided a nice amount of heat. I also tried the potatoes au gratin and they were spectacular. Perfectly cooked potatoes in a nice creamy cheese bechamel sauce. For my mom's bday, the brought out this monstrosoty of an ice cream Sunday with all the toppings and a candle, which was more like a torch. Excellent and while the food was 4 star, I have to give this place 5 star for the service and thoughtfulness. read more

Really want it to work... so our server was great, but he was busy, missing at times and a lot of time between courses which is ok for the business meeting but probably not efficient for a family dinner. Popovers to start - hot and fresh, this time not too crunchy or overcooked so that was great. Green tea that was cooked fresh in a pot, then poured over ice to chill it. Great technique. The appetizers - bacon was good, fatty and rich - aroma all over the restaurant for this. The burrata was ok, and the sliders and the wontons were just ok; nothing that made it better than others I've had. The steak was a disappointment - prime ribeye, and asked for medium rare. Instead, I had half a steak that was well-done, and the other half was more like medium well. =( Sides of three styles of mac & cheese (original, truffle, and lobster) were all excellent. The wild mushroom mix was good, and the horseradish cream great. The dessert - people really liked the custom sundae in a giant martini glass, edible containers of chocolate. The hot butter cake was also delicious with ice cream and berry compote. Wine selections by the server were very good. Overall, steak was a sad 0, the appetizers ok, the sides and the dessert very good. Still such an inconsistent dinner! Will try again I'm sure, but may just end up going to the Morristown one. read more

I don't know how Roots has a 3.8 on Yelp because this was a 5 star dinner hands down. First off, the service was amazing. Raoul was our server and he was so nice and attentive. There was always a staff member around for more water or to clear plates without asking. The food was amazing. We got the tuna tartare, chicken parmesan, truffle mac, potatoes au gratin, arugula salad, and beef wellington with spinach. The beef wellington was cooked medium rare and served was juicy and flavorful. We could've passed on the spinach just because it didn't have a ton of flavor but the rest of the meal did. The arugula salad was fresh and completed the rest of the meal very well. The truffle mac was creamy and I loved that they actually put shaved black truffle in it. Perfect amount of truffle flavor, wasn't too overwhelming. The chicken parmesan was thin and crispy and then burrata on top really made it stand out. The potatoes au gratin were my favorite, which shocked me. Perfectly crispy on top with the appropriate amount of bechamel (some places do wayyyy too much). The tartare was a crowd-favorite with the right amount of saltiness from the soy, creaminess from the avocado, and great texture and taste from the tuna. My drink was the ginger pear and it was one of the best cocktails I've had in a long time. For my dad's birthday, they comped the build your own sundae dessert, which was so generous. The popover to start was also a nice touch and delicious! The ambiance reminded us of a NY Steakhouse. I loved the elegance and I really didn't feel like I was in NJ. Also got a mocktail, but for a $10 drink would expect some type of garnish. We just werent so impressed with the food. No highchairs for kids. I came in with my husband and we were not dressed for the occasion. He had found roots in summit while I was shopping in short hills mall. Despite how ridiculously underdressed we were, my husband was in his work clothes, they treated us amazingly. Our server was Luis. He is the beyond gentlemanly and we were treated beyond great by him. His recommendations were excellent. Our last visit with friends, I was upcharged for my Jefferson's Manhattan as Ocean (which I didn't order and wondered why it didn't taste like my regular) and one of the steaks was upcharged to the 12 oz from 8oz filet even though everyone heard 8 oz order! No one said anything bc neither couple knew that had happened when we split the bill. Just disappointed to find out after we left restaurant. still Roots has phenomenal food, but repeatedly, hate feeling not appreciated even though we go there 2-3 times a year for special occasions. read more

Definitely one of the best steakhouses in NJ. While the steak was amazing, I want to say the apps and sides were possibly the stars of the show. I've been to quite a few steakhouses (you know if you've been reading my reviews) and I've always thought what seems to be a letdown at some of these high-end steakhouses is the sides, but I am very happy to report that Roots kills it here! Along with an amazing steak and accompanying sides we ordered (that cowboy ribeye hit every highlight - perfectly cooked seasoning and impeccable), it was an amazing way to spend my birthday with my family. Not only that but the old fashioned was great and ice cream dessert was just the cherry on top. Location is nice, municipal parking across the street and the staff was AWESOME! Visited the Roots Steakhouse location in Summit for a late Valentine's Day date with the fiancé. We had arrived a little earlier than our reservation and thankfully they were able to seat us. We had this cute booth right by the bar. Emilia was our waitress and she was wonderful! Since it was our first time she gave us great recommendations. I ordered one of their espresso martini and it was soo good! Then we placed our order for appetizers and started with the calamari and crispy shrimp scampi. Before our apps came out, we were served their famous sweet rolls. It was nice and fluffy. The apps were brought out and I will say their portions are generous! We made a small dent before our entree came out. We had ordered the porterhouse for 2 to share and then ordered sides of the onion rings, truffle fries and Mac and cheese. Omg everything was to die for! The steak was cooked perfectly and I had requested for a horseradish sauce on the side. Wow! And all the sides were def shareable and I loved the macaroni and cheese. Very disappointing. We have been here before, but probably never again. Steaks were not cooked properly (some too rare, some overcooked but cold) lobster roll was cold and chewy. Came here on a Thursday night. Parking was easy to find. Everyone was welcoming. We sat at a table in the back. I can admit the tables were pretty close together but we were ok. The service here is immaculate. They even cleaned the crumbs off our table after every course. We started out with complementary bread and butter which was good. We then ordered the dry aged steak, lobster mac, salmon, mash, and regular mac n cheese. Everything was good and the food came out within reasonable timing. For dessert we had the butter cake. The yorkshire pudding that came out during the apps was very tasty and well made. We split a porterhouse for 2 and ordered several sides. The steak arrived not completely sliced through which made it difficult to cut from the bone however it was cooked as requested. All the sides were quite good. We went here to celebrate my daughter's master degree. As expected service was excellent and d the food was perfection. We started with cocktails: Raspberry Beret; Spring Fashioned; rose, and Knob Creek Rye. All delicious. We then had a dozen east coast oysters which were ultra fresh and d hit the desire for a briny sea taste. We all got steak ranging from The 20 oz dry aged cowboy, to a 42 oz port house for 2 and a New York strip. All cooked perfectly. You can't go wrong here. Best steakhouse in NJ in my opinion. We've been coming here for years. It's never been perfect, but last time we were here just wore us out. We could not get the table we wanted. Fine. We then sat down by the bar, which is awful because everyone who is waiting for a table hovers over you. It's terrible to have people's behinds brushing agains you/table while you're trying to eat. It's also very loud. We ordered apps, and I asked to keep the wine list bc once I was done with my cocktail, I was going to order a bottle of red. Well, we finished the bread, apps came, we finished the apps, and no sign of a server to take our wine order. Richard came to the rescue and got us a cocktail, but at this point it was too late to order a bottle of wine. We then decided to order a glass of wine each instead. On the positive side, the food was excellent. Everything was cooked to the right temperature unlike previous occasions. Emily was welcoming as always. Nonetheless, we will not be coming back... at least to this location. There are just too many choices for dining in the area to pay $$$$ and get inconsistent service and less than desirable atmosphere. read more

Roots steakhouse is a lively scene that's great for a night with family, friends, coworkers and/or a date. The restaurant was nicely busy on a Saturday night. We hade reservations and were sat promptly at our reservation time. Our table was next to the bar which although was busy, didn't negatively impact our evening. Our server John was very pleasant and knowledgeable. He recommended dishes based on our preferences and nice wine pairings. The burrata was good, but firmer. Personally I prefer a creamier, looser burrata but it was still good. The shrimp cocktail was fresh and cooked nicely. We shared the porter house for 2 with three sides the mushrooms, broccoli and asparagus. The mushrooms side dish was the best of the three. The filet pice of the porterhouse has tremendous flavor and texture. We celebrated my birthday and was brought a Sundae on the house. It was a such a nice surprise and yummy! I love this steakhouse and every time I'm home to visit, coming here feels like an extension of home. The service is always great and the food is great and well executed. This is our go to place for any occasion, multiple graduation lunches, birthday dinners and just casual stop while running errands. I'm always impressed by the team here and their attentiveness and overall attention to the customer experience. I sat at the bar for the first time for a quick lunch and Oscar and Dexter were the highlight of my stop this time around. They were so nice and accommodating. I love seeing teams work together to bring food out and make a point to support and acknowledge other guests while on the floor. The lunch express is my favorite and is such a great value for a well balanced lunch. The lobster bisque is so good- best I've had. Dexter made the best drinks with muddled cucumber and offered a great liquor suggestion that made the drink so refreshing and not too sweet as I requested. I recently dined at Roots in Summit with a client. The 12 oz New York strip was $49. It came cold and it was obviously not a prime cut; rather it tasted like a steak purchased at your average supermarket. Likewise, the creamed spinach came cold and watery. The restaurant was packed so it was obvious that the place is making money. Management therefore may not care. STAY AWAY! Roots is no longer a high end steakhouse. read more

Let's face it, the average American steakhouse is boring. Unless it's a horror show, you generally know what you're in for -- dark, brooding upscalia decor, overweening service, usual suspect sides and a better than average "you can't get this in a supermarket" slab of meat cooked to order on a plate hot enough to remove your fingerprints. And did I even have to mention the obligatory "if you have to ask..." pricing. So by that measure, our visit to Roots was a smashing success. The steak is superb (if a bit undercooked,) the Caesar, spinach and mushrooms were all done well and the service was stellar -- especially in this day and age when you're likely to be sneered at by the tattooed dolphins slinging meat at lesser venues. The ambiance of roots is always enjoyable and makes the overall dinner experience feel special. Food was very good and cooked to perfection.
