The only reason I gave this place any stars is because of the Vegan Market. Their food is horrible. We ordered their Neat Balls and our plate had so much liquid in it our food was drowning. The flavor was odd. I wonder if they even taste their food before serving it. We also tried their tostadas and it was a little better but still not great. It was spicy but for the price it wasn't good. Small portions. I definitely will come back for the Market but skip Roots Cafe all together. Their food was not good. Their seating area was very relaxed but when it gets full there is so much wasted space that people have to stand. They could have better seating other than pillows on the floor. Not practical at all. The ordering area is sooooo small that you can't fit more than 5 people. They ask for your name and bring your food to you but, they don't even serve you in the order you come in. We waited a half an hour for our food. Meanwhile, people who arrived after us got food before us and they ordered the same food. I guess if you stand in front of them you get your food first. If we hadn't gone and asked, who knows when we would have eaten. Not worth it and I definitely won't waste my money on this place again. Thank goodness for the vendors at the Market, we were able to eat good food. read more

I just ate here for the first time and am wishing I had gotten more food to go! This place feels like a secret hydroponic garden with a clear mission to serve clean, raw, healthy food. I cannot recommend the burrito enough. Fresh romaine, seeds and avocado are wrapped in a sweet plantain wrap. I also had an iced coffee crusher, which is made from homemade nut milks and ethically sourced coffee (it's basically a healthy frappuccinno). I did get the cheesecake to go and was even gifted a nut bar as a welcome gift. This is a small family-owned business and am thrilled they now have a food truck. The whole experience from the food, to speaking with the staff and owners to petting their rescue turtle was such a pleasure. Highly recommend! read more

This was a super cool cafe but I'm allergic to tree nuts and they blend everything in the same blender so I couldn't have anything! :( I'm not sure why they don't have an option for people who can't eat nuts...that's a common allergy where you'd think a company would go the extra length to prepare it in a separate blender or something. Had the best lunch! We got the mocha madness and mint chocolate chip shakes which were both so creamy and filling! Had the enchilada and burrito for lunch and have to say both were delicious. Loved the tomato sauce on the enchilada and the wrap for the burrito. Nacho cheese made from cashews was exceptional. We also loved the raw desserts we got which were the turtles and mocha cheesecake. The seating is so naturey and adorable. read more

Delicious food here! You don't find raw vegan restaurants in NJ. However, there are many in California and that's where I was turned onto this cuisine. As a vegan, I love eating raw but don't always have the time to prepare for these meals. The cauliflower crust pizza with pesto is absolutely delicious and filling! Their veggie burgers as well as the walnut taco meat is also sooo tasty. There is a really neat area inside to sit with hydroponically grown herbs and leafy greens growing. Reminds me of being...somewhere else- not in North Jersey. It takes me about a half hour to get here from Fair Lawn so if I lived closer I'd definitely visit more frequently but now I will try to get there as often as I can! I came in with a vegan friend who was curious to try out the raw vegan food. Unfortunately we came in 15 minutes before close on our fault (we didn't check before driving) but the owners were gracious enough to serve us. The food here is delicious and clean eating at it's best. The food here is simple, letting each ingredient stand out. The smoothies are so delicious and unique, as the desserts. If you are not used to eating vegan/raw vegan it is going to taste extremely different from your average restaurant. Owners are really nice and really care about the cafe and customers. read more

Yes Roots is Raw/Vegan/Organic and Gluten Free, but the one thing missing from that statement is that it is delicious, satisfying, and addictive. I am not vegan, and my every day diet is not Raw or gluten free, however, I visit this cafe often. I have had the Guacamole Wrap, the fruit crepe, the fruit drinks, among many different snacks and I was completely shocked that it tasted so unbelievably delicious and satisfying. Just went here for the first time today and Me and my father had such a great experience that I have to review it so soon! First off, the counter boy was young but so polite and knowledgable and answered all of our many questions. Then we sat in the little cafe area right next door and met the owners..and they were so amazing! They were so friendly and welcoming I have never had an experience quite like it at any restaurant. They talked with us in depth about their food and the quality of ingredients they use and it was refreshing to hear. The grow some of their own herbs and produce right there in the cafe and they get the rest from a organic farm right in emerson! Then we got our juices and they were so delicious we both finished them while waiting for our food. We took our food to go and it was absolutely delicious! Im not a vegan or gluten free so I was not expecting to be wowed when I came here but the food and juices were exceptional. Overall this place is a hidden gem, its hard to find really good food but its even harder to find good food made by great people and this place does it. Got to know this place via vegandale festival past weekend!! So glad we've found the truck. Everything is fresh and made with love. It was one of the best food option in the festival. You know how we have a tendency of eating junk whether you are omnivores or vegan. Most trucks that had long lines were pretty much vegan junk food, which once in a while is okay but it wasn't something we were looking for. Love love everything they served. Honestly think we may have ordered everything on their menu. Lol! Wish I can get to them easier since they are in Jersey and seems far from the city. Let me know whenever your tuck is in the city. Coming over with bunch of friends. Guys it is just so good. Highly recommend beyond good burrito, their wrap is just die for, and pad Thai slaw salad, the harmony of their ingredients are just magical. The food I received was fine. But each item was missing ingredients listed on the menu. My burrito was supposed to have chard and sunflower seeds - there were none. I was supposed to have a choice of a side - I did not (and was not told that I was limited to crackers until my food was given to me). My juice was supposed to have beets - it did not, and possible was the completely wrong juice order. We ordered three burritos, but were given two - at that point we had waited so long, we decided not to bother asking for a third. What we were given tasted good, but it was disappointing and felt like a waste of money in that we didn't receive what was promised. We did place these orders 30 minutes before closing, which could explain the lack of ingredients - but this could have been fixed by simply telling us what they didn't have before we placed our order. I am sure this place is great - but I simply don't trust that I will get what I ask for. read more

The only problem I had was that the girl preparing my food had her long hair down hanging all over. It totally freaked me out that I may get a hair in my food. Everything in the house is gluten-free. Let me repeat that...everything in the house is gluten-free. Music to my ears. Roots Cafe is a little place tucked away on the far side of an office building. You order your food at the counter and have the option of eat-in or take out. There is an adjacent dining area (garage) nicely decorated with a Woodstock-ish 60's feel to it. Outdoor seating is also available. The menu is limited but interesting. I had the veggie burger. I can only guess at the ingredients but there was a definite seed/nut emphasis going on here for both the burger and the roll. A glorious slice of tomato and lettuce accented the burger along with a spread ....again I can only guess...that this might be a tofutti inspired dressing or something similar. Along side the burger were salad greens, tomatoes, "croutons" and creamy garlic dressing. Nicely done. My companion ordered the zucchini pesto which he enjoyed very much. The rejuvenator smoothie was sweet and citrusy with a blast of carrot and ginger. Real good. The people behind the counter were helpful and friendly. Had a co-worker recommend this place to me. Wasn't sure at first, but once I tried the food I got hooked. The pad thai is so damn good and the mocha shake is freaking amazing. I'm always never sure about vegan but this place hits the mark. They use frozen bananas in their shakes and the ingredients are all natural. Wow! I have never had a bad treat here. From their delicious smoothies (the spirolina one is my favorite), the fresh and clean salads and food, to their "healthy" desserts, I am never disappointed. The staff is super friendly and accommodating to anything that you may need or want. I also love hanging out in their zen cafe right next door (the swinging rope swing is the best spot.) Finally raw food in Bergen County, NJ! It is a bit tucked away but worth finding! Navigation will not take you to the right location. Google the address for "taste of spain" restaurant in Northvale. Roots is tucked away behind taste of spain. I tried a sunburger, crumbcake, almond joy and a macaroon. I didn't mean to eat them all in one sotting but once I started eating, I didn't want to stop. Roots Cafe is an extremely small family owned Raw/Vegan/Organic/Gluten Free eating establishment. Don't let the words raw or vegan scare you away, they're food is absolutely fantastic and leaves you with both satisfied tastebuds and an even more satisfied body. I ordered a Guacamole Wrap for my first (but far from last) visit. Not only was the guacamole freshly made within minutes, but the wrap itself was handmade from fresh vegetables. The biggest mistake you can make with Roots is being scared away by it's promise of vegan/gluten free/ organic. Experience something fantastic tasting and fantastic for you. I recommend this to anyone except maybe the American male meat lover, but hey with a four page menu and everything fresh as can be, even they could be swayed into a healthier life style. Really nice place. Funky vibe and good food. I had the Zucchini Meets Sauce which was pretty tasty. Berry lemonade was really delicious. I don't usually eat raw but we were up for an adventure. Owner and staff were very nice and super friendly. It was the end of the night and they offered us good bars and coconut bars at no charge. I will definitely be back. I am gluten free and dairy free so Raw was a good fit for me. read more
