Though I may prefer their previous location in Northvale which was very cozy, I was happy to see Roots finally reopened in an inviting space with an art space, plants, books, and a stage area. Though not huge, their menu is plant based with an assortment of brunch/lunch items like bowls, salads and interesting sushi, as well as smoothies and other drinks. If you're open to vegan food and uncommon items in a western diet, you'll enjoy it. The pad thai slaw and sushirito were delicious and well made and everything on the menu was inviting. The teas were lovely and I really enjoyed being able to select a blend of herbs for my tea mug. There was some herbal water available, and a selection of desserts on the counter and in the fridge - chocolatey delights like "snickers" bars. We found a corner next to the stage with two armchairs and a coffee table which was the coziest corner to sit and chat. Though it was Friday afternoon at lunch time and there were several other small groups, it never felt crowded and we were able to stay for a few hours enjoying our tea and meal. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, and non-intrusive. You order at the counter and then sit down, and we were not disturbed at all besides our meal being brought to us when it was ready. So glad they're back! The other day we stopped in for lunch at the new location in Closter NJ. We had the lentil and chili soups--with peanut butter cups and cheesecake! Everything is vegan--I love it because for me it's less to worry about. Ambiance is comfortable, very similar to how they setup the dining room in their old location--which was earthy and homey. This location has an addition of an art room! For art days--appeared to be an area where adults and children can create art. I didn't venture in. Animals are welcome, some patrons had their dogs. Service was great. The cashier charged us for something we did not order and promptly sent a refund. They didn't have the salads and burritos from the previous menu but the owner told me that the menu items will eventually return. Will definitely come back! read more

Super cute place which might be difficult to locate until you try and go till the end of the suites located at the location, turn left and then enter the cafe through the tent. Friendly staff and the cafe has a quirky interior, their entire menu is vegan. We tried the Trio Timeless Tacos and the Mediterranean quinoa bowl. The Trio Timeless Tacos tasted good, we got one of each, they were so light and healthy, each tasted unique in their own sense. This is where delicious food, amazing staff, laidback ambiance and magic meet. I went here last week for the first time. When we walked through the parking lot, we were amazed to find such an open outdoor seating area. Perfect for summers and cool fall days. Inside, the decor is fun and warm. The staff were so friendly and made some great recommendations for food and drinks. We ordered quinoa bowl, a classic pizza, the tropical smoothie and a lavender blues smoothie. Everything was fresh and delicious. The meal was so satisfying. We felt full but not weighed down. The cafe also has the sweetest mascot, Riley. Everyone seemed to know her! My mom is in town so I decided to try to take her to a few vegan spots. This was both our first time at Roots Cafe but not our last! Everything from the coffee to the food was amazing! My mom ordered an iced coffee and I started with a cold brew. Both were out of this world. We decided to share the pad Thai salad and Buffy Chicky burrito. OMG. Both dishes were delicious and filling. We did not have room for dessert but next time will make a point to try something chocolate. Our only complaint was the outdoor seating. I couldn't decide what I wanted so I got the reishi pnut cup and the lavender blues. So good! I could only finish less than half of each of the small. The only thing I might change is have the plantain chips came on top of or on the side when you order Togo (easy fix). Just keep in mind that since it's a small hole in the wall restaurant ordering Togo is probably the best way to purchase food from here. Consistently inconsistent. It's a very hit or miss experience depending on the day and who is preparing your food/beverages. Also, I'm very confused by their use of honey... when I asked about it I was told since they use honey, they NOW consider themselves plant based rather than vegan. This didn't make much sense to me as honey is neither vegan OR plant based... maybe they meant to use the word raw but that would still be contradicting from being considered a "plant-based" establishment. This is the coolest place that seems more like it should be in Venice Beach, CA then bucolic suburban NJ, but that's what I love about it. It is so hard to be gluten and dairy free and find food in any restaurant around here let alone be able to eat every last item on the menu...and everything is 100% raw, fresh and quality ingredients. Everything passes the taste test whether a fresh smoothie, coffee or tea or any of the food choices form pad thai to burritos to salads. The place has a calm, zen vibe. The hype is real my friends, this place is a legit five star raw food cafe. They have friendly staff, a unique seating area, and amazing raw food. I really, really hate to use Yelp clichés, however this place is a "Hidden Gem" by definition; I mean really hidden. The cafe is literally on the rear side of a comercial complex building. There signs for the cafe when you turn off the main road, but no signs on the main road. If I didn't find this place on the Yelp app I would never know about it. When you walk in its like stepping into another dimension. The place is decorated to be peaceful and tranquil. They have a counter where you order, but the room to the side is such a cool room. It's not traditional seating it's more like the comfy seating you would see in an indy coffee shop with lots and lots of plants; so beautiful!! On my first visit I had the raw garden burger with dried plantain chips. This was my very first raw food meal and I have to say I was quite impressed on how good it was, and those plantain chips were so good! The second time I had the Guc de Wrap which was another amazing dish; I was unaware of how awesome the actual wrap made of dehydrated vegetables could be! I work all over northern NJ and this gives me a reason to be excited about working in Northwestern Bergen County! read more
