A cute and cozy cafe. They have a wide variety of coffee and tea. The cookies and brownies up front at the counter are always fresh and trustworthy. I had the PBB sandwich today which is multigrain bread toasted with banana, peanut butter, cinnamon, and honey. It was a PB overload for less than $6. The staff is always extremely friendly and accommodating. It's comfortable in here despite the small space. I wish Roots was in a more central area. They would do so well on 7th Ave or PPW up the street. read more

Amazing. Cute place in Brooklyn, vaguely heard that it was good, so decided to stop by. Definitely lives up to its reviews. The ambiance is casual and I could have stayed there all day doing work and eating (mostly eating of course). The staff at the counter was friendly, I asked for recommendations and she gave me a few, the roots burrito being a classic, but that her personal favorite was the country kicker ($8.00). It has ham and cheddar and a bit of a kick with the hot peppers. I like a bit of spicy so I took her advice. This sandwich was made fresh and came out delicious and super filling. The ham was delicious and plentiful. and the hot peppers gave it that perfect kick. All of it was also toasted to perfection. I also tried some of the breakfast sammie with extra meat added, and surprisingly the turkey is almost even better. As a take home (since I was so full after the sandwich), I also got 2 biscuits that they sell courtesy of Brooklyn Biscuit Company. Unfortunately, it turns out they are friendly and able to deliver pleasant customer service, but only for a specific type of people. Considered not writing this review, but sat there for a while and watched the pattern happen of who they smiled at and who they barely made eye contact with. This review is for vegetarians and vegans. Roots has many vegan and vegetarian options. I highly recommend their Jamey vegan burrito with tofu. It included a giant portion of tofu spiced with turmeric, vegan cheese, and black bean spread for about $9 and worth it. It was well seasoned and tasty! I also liked that the menu was labelled clearly with ingredients as well as if options are vegan or vegetarian. It is a fast casual so no table service. I wanted to also try their cheddar grits but I got there at about 2pm on a weekend and they were sold out! I recommend going early as it seems they sell out. read more

This is the perfect place to grab a quick breakfast, lunch or brunch or linner. The food is awesome with vegan and dairy free choices. The place is a tad tiny and could get crowded at times. The customers are friendly so it's easy to share a seat with them. The staff are helpful and accommodating to everyone. My son loves it here because play area. Can play a game of chess or the kids can play with small toys or puzzles, while enjoying their mochas, lattes and hot chocolates like we did. Some artwork and weaved decor on the walls. The drinks were rich in flavor, which made them worth the price, between $4-5.50 each for my group's orders. Tried the turmeric latte which was strong so maybe not for me but at least I tried it. The space is very cozy with a "home" feel to it. I just absolutely adore Amanda. She greets you with a smile, exchanges in small talk and just lightens the mood. She made me forget about the hassle of the day by simply writing 3 words on my coffe lid "YOURE SO SPECIAL". Unfortunately a couple of things have declined: *Every time I've been in since Roots changed owners, the clientele has gotten ruder and ruder. This is my biggest gripe. The ambience sucks now. It seems as if once credit cards were allowed every overpaid south sloper decided to come in and be selfish and inconsiderate. *The food is made with less care than it used to be. Cheese not melted or burrito not wrapped tight. Little things, but it makes a difference. Every time I have cash on me I have to get my morning coffee at Roots. Food is great, service is so welcoming, and the coffee is amazing. Borderline Burrito is my favorite burrito in NYC I once ate half of it in the cafe and then when I asked to get it to go, they refilled my salsa cup It's the little things Grilled cheese is also simple and yummy, Hummus wrap is another favorite of mine, next time I'm in I want to try their grits! I love the relaxed , old-school feel of this place. Comfy chairs, reading material, quirky art on the walls, no one is hurrying you out the door - the way cafes used to be (don't I sound old!). Also, the food and coffee is delicious and I love that there are a few vegan options. The veggie breakfast burrito is my fav but everything I've had has been tasty. The barista knows a lot of the patrons (and their orders!) by name, so it seems like this place has a loyal neighborhood following. Places like this feel few and far between these days in Brooklyn! First: *The atmosphere: chalkboard menus, old wood, local art, books! *The customer service: the best EVER. I've been in here twice. The first time I was in here I met Kimi who was absolutely lovely, complimented me on my choice of drink, and talked to me while she made it, welcoming me to the neighborhood. Kimi also does this cute art she makes into magnets that you can buy at Roots. The second time I met Amanda, who was cute and bubbly and talkative as well. When I returned to Roots last night for a poetry event, Amanda remembered my name. A summer time must visit. This small coffee shop is super fun and trendy. The staff are awesome. The large board to the right of the register lists a bunch of home made custom lattes. For instance they had one which is made with yoohoo. I have yet to try it but will be back soon to get my hands on it. They have a petty good breakfast offering which is why I stopped in here. I had the egg and cheese panini but for $1 a topping you can add things like avocado, bacon etc. One of the foods this place is known for is the Cheesey grits. Unless you are ravenously hungry the smaller size will likely be enough as these grits can be a bit heavy. The best part of them is the top layer which is drizzled with a touch of olive oil and dusted with a touch of herbs/spices. I will admit I had thought the dish would be a lot cheesier then it was in reality. The grits had enough flavor to hold it's own but I would have liked to taste a little cheeyness. The highlight of this place for me is the out door seating area. It is hard to see from the front of the store but make your way back there if you want to sit back and sip on some java. It is very quiet and relaxing and the decor is perfect. This place is an escape from the hustle and bustle I would definitely recommend coming here with a book or some work and just relaxing outback. The coffee I had was the house blend which was very well balanced. Some places have a tendency to go to extreme either brewing motor oil or coffee tea. The service is by far superb and outstanding. The owner is delightful and engages every single customer like they are the only customer that matters. Service is definitely a solid five stars. The food was plentiful and flavorful! I am drooling just thinking about it. I had the egg and cheese burritos with all the extras I.e beans, tomatoes and guacamole. I also added the vegan sausage. I love that they put the burritos in a panini press it adds an extra layer of flavor and the crunch is good. With all that wonderful stuff said the wait for the food was punishingly long. We waited over 30 minutes for the sandwiches which in my opinion was way too long. During our visit we saw several patrons leave because the long was long and moving slowly. read more

The weird thing about South Slope is that the few dining and drinking options stomp the hell out of Park Slope. The cheaper rents tend to attract restauranteurs and artisans who just want to focus on their passion, shabby-looking neighborhood be damned. Because of that some of the best dining and drinking to be had is south of Prospect Ave and Roots is one of those places With the pricier exception of Grumpy and an equally good Southside a couple blocks away this is a damn fine place to read a book for a couple hours and sip some Stumptown. It's big enough that you don't feel like you're taking up valuable space but cozy enough where you aren't drinking coffee in someone's closet. The panine are tops and Stumptown coffee is famous for being really damn good. One warning too. Sometimes they have to close a bit early because the dudes here are in a band and have a show to go to but fear not because Southside is just a block away. Maybe an inconvenience but kind of awesome too. It's something to appreciate about a small business. read more

I have never been to this coffee shop without the people behind the bar acting genuinely happy to see me and making sure that I had a great experience in their establishment. They are serious about service with a smile, in spite of my usually cranky pre-coffee demeanor. It's a much higher level of service than I'm used to in NYC honestly, and I only come once a week or two as a treat, so it's not like I'm there every day. This place has both breakfast and lunch food in addition to typical pastry and coffee fare. It's extremely vegetarian friendly and even has several vegan items. I've had the loaded grits, which were decent but too light on the salt and pepper for my taste. I've also asked for a bagel with cheese and their vegan sausage, which is not a sandwich on the menu, but they made it for me anyway. It was actually quite tasty! I've had the grilled cheese as well and it was also pretty good. The coffee is the real star at this shop though. The iced salted caramel almond milk latte is a whopping $6, but it's the best fancy iced coffee drink I've ever had. I've sat in the cafe and also taken food to go. It's a charming little spot with a lot of character and a small group of genuinely lovely people running it. I highly recommend this place. read more

Tiny and homey, I think I'll be here a lot from now on! I mean, they were playing Skynard softly in the background, warms my heart. My chai latte, which I'm told is created in house (the chai) was very very yummy. The owner was incredibly friendly and made me feel even more excited about living in this neighborhood. I seem to have stumbled across all the young people in Greenwood Heights hanging out at this cafe! Not a ton of seats, so I will have to see how this place pans out at peak hours. Meh. Kind of a cat people's cafe. Looks welcoming but mainly for yuppies and their children they won't discipline. Not welcoming to dogs, which is quite upsetting, but welcoming to little monsters and their enabling Park Slope parents. A cup of coffee here is WAAAAAY too expensive like a lot of the other coffee shops on Fifth Ave., and even for how expensive it is it tastes like Dunkin' Donuts (blegh) or Starbucks. I was walking my dogs past the cafe and saw a sign for free soup and sandwiches. The owner of Roots, I believe her name is Patricia, was so kind and welcoming when I walked in. I work in the service industry, so I'm constantly hyper-aware of.. well, everything. And I honestly even felt a bit insecure asking about it! She packed two soups and a sandwich for my partner gladly, and I bought some muffins to support! And that meal kind of became the highlight of our day haha! It was so tasty! Roots Cafe has been a recent staple for lunch for me! The Taibi is an absolute homerun sandwich. I wouldn't change a thing about it. The cold & crisp sweetness of the veggies paired with the saltiness of the vegan cheese is truly great! I've been ordering out from Roots because of COVID & it's always ready ahead of time, so I never have to wait.
