When COVID hit last year our volunteer jobs became essential worker jobs. It was highly stressful work all week. Every single week the only thing that got us through it was knowing come Friday night we would go to Roots, toast to having gotten through another week and just relaxed with good food, beer & sangria in a place that felt like home. We have never been the only regulars there, which should tell you a lot about this place. The pizzas are great, the beer selection good and they make sangria, which for me makes them saints. The staff are the shining stars for us. We always look forward to seeing them. We've lived here for decades and this is the only place that makes us feel like its "our place" to unwind from our week, enjoy some good food and listen to music. Yes, its old and hasn't changed in ages but I like that, especially when everything else about this beloved area is changing rapidly. We took a 4 month break recently due to the COVID numbers continuing to climb and felt we needed to be safer so it killed us but we stayed away for four long months. I craved their pizza literally on a weekly basis. We finally went back tonight. It felt like coming home. Nothings changed and that's the way we like it. To our surprise the staff was so relieved to see us. They didn't know why we had stopped coming in and were concerned about us. How many places do you go to that you can say that about? So stop in sometime. Hopefully you'll walk away feeling like you've found a new place to come in and stay awhile too. read more

I am a Georgetown local and business owner. I have visited Roots several time and have never had bad service until today. March 15th 2019 my Aunt and Uncle from out of town and I decided to have lunch and a beer there. Knowing that they have good food we expect good things. However on this day it was not to be. My Aunt got her soup but my uncle and I did not get our food. As we watched both the server and the cook walk out back to have a cigarette we stared and wondered what was going on. I walk out back and asked if we we're getting our food. He said oh though your food was delivered. We were the only customers in the place waiting for food. These employees need to be let go. Don't let a good place be ruined by poor service of a few bad employees. read more

Some nights are busier than others, so there can be a wait. No different than any other place that gets packed. Nobody knew any of the songs they played and it was July 2nd so we were hoping for a fun night out listening to great music & they were not taking requests. We decided to try Roots based on an article in the local Georgetown paper. The article emphasized the "craft" beers and the great pizzas. The place looks like a bar. The décor is early-American garage sale. There are license plates on the wall around the room, a couple of bicycles on the wall, and some artwork. We walked in the front door and waited for someone to greet us - there is no hostess station and no signage indicating that it is OK to seat yourself, so we eventually just picked a table and sat down. A friendly young man came out from around the bar and dropped off two paper menus - pizza on one side and sandwiches on the other. He invited us to order at the bar when we were ready. We ordered a pizza and two margaritas. Sorry, no liquor. I looked over the "craft" beers - they are all bottled. Two beers are on tap, neither beer tickles my fancy. We tried to order wine, but they have a limited selection and nothing we would care for with pizza. We settled on ice tea (self service). This is a "pay when you order" place, so I passed my American Express to the bartender. Sorry, no American express - so I fished out another card. At this point, we're slightly disappointed but still hopeful. We sat down and our pizza was delivered to the table after about 10 minutes. Apparently, plates are optional here - you have to ask for them. "Some people don't want them", the bartender told us. The plates were brought out, we started to dig in to the pizza, which unfortunately was soggy on the bottom. The pizza was edible, but certainly nothing to get excited about. So what is this place? The first time we went in this place, we stood around for a bit and couldn't figure out how to do it. We were unsure if we should seat ourselves or what. After a few minutes of wandering around we left. We were a group of 8, so not only did they lose out on a big ticket, we were kinda hard not to notice. Fast forward 6 months: Decided to try again since I now work in a salon down the street. Called in an order for a margherita pizza and it was amazingly good! So my wife and I often drop by Roots after dinner downtown. They have a big chalk board with their weekend roster of entertainment. Seems like it would be easy enough for them to snap a photo every week and post to their Facebook page, but no. You gotta go in. Anyway we were there this weekend and a singer was doing original tunes. Good for us as we got a beer. They got better and then started a version of Delta Dawn made famous by Tanya Tucker back in the 70's. I did a quick search on my phone and noticed the name of the song writer was the same as the name on the board. Crazy. This guy was the original writer of that famous song. And he was terrific. We were lucky to be there. How many more people would have come out if Roots had just put a little effort to promote their business? Come on guys. Try a little harder. read more

My husband and I were traveling back to the DFW area after spending time in Austin - attending a concert and hanging with our two dogs. Our criteria for lunch on a Saturday afternoon: dog friendly patio (with shade - it was 98*F), better than average food, not too far from I35, and definitely not a chain restaurant. Success on all fronts! Waitstaff was super friendly - they brought water for the dogs and ever offered to bring them some bread to snack on. I had the best BLT I've ever had and my husband also loved his breakfast tacos. Great experience. We will definitely be back. read more

What a cool little spot on the square in lovely Georgetown, Texas! Arriving in town for a wedding in Austin, my wife and I met her sister and our niece at Roots Bistro for a quick lunch. They offer a nice variety of salads, sandwiches and homemade pizzas as well as a soup of the day. They also offer a nice variety of draft and bottled beers along with a decent wine list. I opted for the Reuben sandwich, one of my all time favorites. Served on toasted marbled rye with a nice portion of corned beef, coleslaw, swiss cheese and dressing, the sandwich really hit the spot. I was in a rather foul mood after a ridiculous drive down I-35 from DFW (those of you who have done it know what I'm talking about) so my wife encouraged me to have a glass of wine to take the edge off. I chose their pinot grigio - I don't recall the vintage, but it did the trick. Upon leaving Roots Bistro, my tummy was full and my attitude was in proper alignment with the coming nuptial celebration. I look forward to returning. read more

Lacking would sum up my experience at Roots. Which is sad because I always seek to support local businesses over chains. Went for lunch this week & it was bad from when we walked in the door. We stood there looking at the bar as the staff stood there staring at us. It is NOT clear that you should order at the bar & a simple "order up here" would have sufficed. Instead we received silence until we walked up to the bar. After to ordering food, the waitress then yelled at us across the restaurant to "get your own drinks." Nice. The staff was more interested in talking with each other than providing any kind of customer service. Our pizza arrived and was a lake of grease. We ordered the pizza with pesto and artichokes & I am guessing neither had been drained. The grease was so bad that it had to be eaten with a knife and fork - several paper towels were unable to get all the grease. The taste was just okay. I can forgive kinks in food for a new restaurant learning its way, but I can't forgive being treated poorly. I have other lunch options and I won't be back!! read more

I have been back several times since my last review, I just never got around to updating my review. (Stopped using yelp for a while). The great news: the pizza has greatly improved and tastes as amazing as it smells. The speed of service has also improved. The wait to order food is still a tad slow, though no fault of counter person. Usually a long wait in line due to people ahead of you reading the menu. Bottled beer a bit pricey, but nice selection. My dining companion commented on the tables are a bit close together making it hard to navigate through the restaurant. (Recent knee surgery and uses a cane). But will be back. I want to really love this place, but it really needs to find an identity. As a previous reviewer already pointed out, there isn't a real cohesive atmosphere. Do they want to be a bar? Are they a restaurant? Are they a pizza joint? When you walk in the door, it's difficult to figure out how things are done. There isn't a door greeter, or a true ordering counter. There is an "Order Here" sign at the bar area. It's kind of tacky. We ordered a pepperoni pizza. It's decent, but the need to do more research on how to get the bottom crust as crispy as the around the edges. It was definitely better than your fast food chain pizzas. Their pizza has real potential if they firm up the bottom of the crust. We visited on a Friday night. Live music at 7. It was so loud, we got up and left. That place is way too small for amplified music. It should be acoustic only or turned down so that people can still have conversations. If they're going for the bar atmosphere, bands shouldn't start until 10 p.m. or later. My critique to management: Find an identity, because the identity you have now is confused. We will probably not eat in anymore. If anything, we may order pizza to go in the future. read more

Seeing as I live in Austin and work in Georgetown, it is funny to me when people complain about hight food prices being in Georgetown. I think Roots is a bit overpriced, but it's standard compared to Austin sandwich places. I had the Florentine Turkey (see the one star review that knocked it below). Was it the best sandwich I ever had? No. Did I enjoy it and feel satisfied afterward? Yes. That's really all want from a sandwich, honestly. And spinach wilts when it's heated.
