WARNING: Based on my experience, I believe this company's pricing and diagnostic practices are predatory. We called about what was clearly presenting as a drainage leak and explained the history. They told us they would "look for the leak," charged us $1,100 for less than two hours of work, and found nothing. Only afterward did they explain that the $1,100 was for looking for an active supply leak, NOT the drainage leak we'd called about. When I questioned why that distinction wasn't made clear beforehand, their response was essentially: "You signed the paperwork." They then wanted another $1,800 to smoke test the drainage system. Another licensed plumber performed that same test for $600, found multiple drainage leaks, and ultimately got our $11,000 repair job. Their justification for these diagnostic charges was that the money would go toward the eventual repair. But that's precisely my concern: their process would have had us nearly $3,000 committed to them before the drainage problem was even identified or we knew what they would charge to fix it. Maybe their eventual repair quote would have been competitive, maybe it wouldn't have been. We'll never know because we stopped there. But when one diagnostic alone was quoted at three times what another legitimate plumber charged, I wasn't willing to find out. The technician was nice and seemed competent. Please please please ask family and friends before calling here. They over charge the f out of you. Unfortunately I wasn't home when Rooter Man came out over the weekend. When I arrived Monday I noticed they were out in the front yard doing work. I asked the family I worked for how much they were being charged and they hadn't received an invoice from them yet because they needed to find the problem. RED FLAG #1 I saw similar reviews with our same problem -- It was going to cost them about 42k! Thats a brand new car & the family are all elders. I asked the family to get a second opinion because Ive worked with plumbing and septics. I asked my uncle to send a plumber. Once she told John (the main head on the plumbing job) she wanted a second opinion he started getting angry with her and telling me " your uncle doesn't know what he doing". RED FLAG #2. He ended up calling his supervisor and telling him what was happening. They brought the price down to 32,800$. Keep in mind, they were charging about 42k. If they were genuine about their work, they wouldn't be getting agitated and dropping an excessive amount. RED FLAG #3 Once the price dropped, the family was willing to move forward. I was still skeptical because it was still an enormous amount of money. They had her sign a contract and guess what. They didn't send her anything because they had problems trying to send it to her. They couldn't give her a full invoice or contract until AFTER it was done. RED FLAG #4 I was waiting around because my uncle's friend wanted to drive by and check it out for himself and John over heard the conversation and he comes rushing out the bathroom and says "why are you waiting, I don't want any problems and I don't want anyone looking at my work". The family already signed the contract so he said he doesn't want anyone else there. He started getting angry with me and we argued back and fourth! The daughter had to say "let's be professional about this". Unbelievable. LOL RED FLAG #5. A few days after, I over heard the father talking to one of his friends and she asked what was the total. 1. The website advertises $49 for one day service (see attached) for new customers but, on the phone, they quoted $125. It was an emergency, so I went ahead. Note other reviews cite similar experiences. 2. After the first sink was snaked, I was told it was $250 because they had to carry equipment upstairs. By "equipment", they meant something the size of a woman's makeup case that a 10 year-old could have carried upstairs. 3. The person they sent out was exceptionally nice and friendly (so that's great), and he resolved the first problem (also great). 4. Unfortunately, things did not go well at the next location. The technician got the snake caught in the pipe and acknowledged to me that he had forced it too far. 5. Instead of the company taking responsibility for their own mistake, the company wanted to charge me $2,320 to cut open the pipe (which, by the way, would not have solved the problem). I would have been an idiot to trust them to do the work, let alone pay them for it. 6. They said they wouldn't charge for the service. All I had to do was initial three places on the technician's tablet probably indemnifying them -- hard to know since it's difficult to read small-print contracts on someone else's tablet. 7. I was told the paperwork would be emailed to me. It never was. What a coincidence: nothing in writing to prove their involvement. I guess that's what my several security cameras are for. 8. A real plumber spent a few hours under my building, opening up multiple pipes, removing the snake in two separate pieces, and putting the pipes back together. NO CUTTING. And guess what... He didn't charge $2,320 that Rooter Man Plumbing wanted to charge for their own mistake; he charged $600 to remove what Rooter Man Plumbing left behind, snake multiple sections of pipe, and also my main line. One fourth the cost for a real plumber. When we had a backed up kitchen sink and nothing would work, we called Rooter man and Jose was dispatched to us same day and within the hour! He was kind and personable, and extremely honest. He took videos of what was happening under the house even before the repairs began so that I could see multiple areas and damage to our foundation and not just the immediate trouble area in the sink. I am so happy he did a full inspection!! During the repair, he actually brought me out to see some of the pipes being replaced and they were 95% blocked. We even had a large leak underground that he was able to lay completely new plumbing. I am so appreciative because everything under the house is wood and our house collapsing would have been catastrophic. I called for a simple shower drain clog. Don't be fooled by the $40 drain cleaning "special" - that is only if they can fix it from the cleanout, which is not like likely with a shower. But fine, whatever, I needed the drain unclogged. The plumber came out, spent some time snaking the drain, but then said he was not able to unclog it. He charged me the full call out price even though the drain was not draining. I called a second plumber, who came out the next day and fixed it in about five minutes. Worse still, the Rooter Man Plumber scraped up and damaged my drain. So not only did I pay for a call out that did not fix a very simple shower clog, had to have a second plumber come, but I also now need to replace the drain hardware. I called the office, who said they'd note it, but I doubt any report or notes were made. They did not seem to care. One of the worst experiences I've ever had. Charged me around $4400 dollars and replaced 3 feet of drain pipe which solved nothing. We had a clocked toilet and bathtub called for them to run a snake. Ended up having a problem that needed them to run a camera. Turned out we had a bunch of roots in the pipe just at the back yard property line leading to the city line in the alley. They cut a 3'x3' in the concrete, dug down to the pipes, cut the old pipes to remove the roots, inserted a liner from properly line to the alley, refilled the hole with dirt, lairs new cement, and put in a concrete patch and box. This cost me $20,405.00. They wanted to replace my main sewer line that also needs to be replaced but that would have been a total of $47,000. I truly feel ripped off and strongly recommend shopping around. Being new to owning a home and not knowing better at the time I went with my 1st call. Turns out I paid way too much. I have to give at least two stars because the people that worked on my house were nice as can be and very hard workers,.......BUT, it started off as $22,000 to have a trenchless pipe put in from my clean out to the street. The trenchless pipe was put in sitting a couple inches higher than the old and when tested the water wood pool as if there were a belly in the pipe. Then the head guy had the nerve to tell me the pipe coming from my house to the cleanout was at an uphill slope and I would have to pay $17,938.53 to have a new pipe put in from my house to the clean out. They just caused this situation by the trenchless pipe not being put in at the right level and I was paying $22,000. Then we added $17,938.53 on for a new pipe from the house to the clean out and it didn't correct the slope so they spent an entire day digging under the trenchless pipe to get the angle right. They could only get the angle right at my clean out by putting in rocks and boulders on top of the starting of the brand new trenchless pipe to pin it down. They essentially created a new belly because that pipe has to go 15 more feet before it makes a sharp downward turn into the sewer. They overcharged me $17,938.53 for a situation they created. When I tried to confront the head man(Sam) about it through text, he would send back horribly long paragraphs about how wrong I was and even threatened to put a lien on my house if they didn't get all of their money in one payment . The job ended up $64,000. Never ever use a trenchless pipe for this purpose. Before they cashed my last payment, I made sure to complain as much as possible about being overcharged $17,938.53 for their mistake in putting the trenchless pipe in inches higher than the old that destroyed the downward slope of my sewer pipe. They knew I was unhappy and that I was right so they offered me $5000 and I said no. They offered me $12,000 and I said no. I said we're very close to you just giving me back the unfair portion of the bill, $17,938.53. They finally agreed to give me back my $17,938.53 on the condition that I NO LONGER HAVE A 15 YEAR WARRANTY for their very flawed sewer system they installed now at $46,000!!!!. Now I have 4 inches wide of standing water in my clean out not moving and that is not right, any idiot knows that. I really won't be happy until I get all of my money back. Sam the head guy says that standing water in my sewer pipe when I'm looking in my clean out is OK because the water keeps the smell out. He is describing a P-trap not what you should be seeing inside of your sewer pipe and he was just trying to bullshit me, this man is an ass! Do not listen to this man except for maybe where he has found your clog because he did a good job at that! After all of this horror story the people that say that they specialize in trenchless pipe repair, never even got a permit from my city to do their job. read more

I had both sides of my kitchen sink backing up, so instead of calling my regular (expensive but trustworthy) plumber, I figured I'd save money and use one of the larger rooter/plumbing companies for a simple drain snake service.ROOTER MAN was the first name I saw. They had decent reviews. The quoted price was around $140 if they cleared the clog.( it was after hours that was an after hours price.) The technician arrived and barely looked at the actual sink ...looked at the drain trap from several feet away and exclaimed the pipe was "crumbling." He really wanted to find and inspect the crawlspace which is on the opposite side of the house and he was gone maybe five minutes before returning to tell me that the pipes underneath the house were failing and that he would not even attempt to snake the drain because he might "break the pipes." He then said the repair would involve replacing about 10 feet of pipe and suddenly came up with an estimate of exactly $5,678.90 that he could do "tomorrow." A few things really stood out to me: - he never seriously inspected under the sink itself - he showed me only one blurry photo of the the trap that proved nothing - he claimed to have crawled through a 16+ year old crawlspace, ( that would have taken 15 minutes at least due to obstructions and proximity). yet somehow came back perfectly clean without a speck of dust, dirt, or cobwebs on him - right before giving me the estimate, he suddenly shifted into very personal "family man" conversation designed to win my trust. - the oddly specific estimate number looked made up on the spot and was in ascending order. 5678.9 Unfortunately, as I don't own my house, he had no further course of action but to wait and see if I would call back in the next day I called my regular plumber for a second opinion. He came out, snaked the drain normally, cleared the clog quickly, and everything was fine... he also informed me that I do not have cast-iron pipes and that trap is rusted on the outside, but not crumbling. This was just a textbook upsell. Way too many red flags to be a real threat but a waste of my time and shady no matter how you look at it. read more

My usual plumber only does emergency calls on weekends, so I tried Rooter Man since it should have just been a quick and easy job, or so I thought. We have plenty of clean outs, and easy access, but before even trying, their tech Vince immediately said they might have to hydro jet the line, which by the way is $1,175!! He then barely tries his 25' snake, and no luck..."you have to hydro jet, but if you do it with me, I'll tell the office $1,000, not $1175. I said "thanks but no thanks". Had my usual plumber come out on the Monday and snaked it in 20min, and good as new. My kids got a wipe down the drain that we didn't know about ‍.
