I haven't been to this place in over five years! I am glad it is still standing! The atmosphere is still friendly. The layout has changed and it still has that authentic vibe but modernized for the times. The staff were friendly and diverse which I love! I ordered the ribeye banh mi, baby thai chicken soup and a side of ginger sauce for $16. Reasonable. The sandwich was as good as I remember! It's all in the softness and butteriness of the bun. The meat was flavorful and the veggies fresh and crisp. What set it off was the garlic aioli. The soup was pact full of flavor with a kick. Their motto is "Good Vibes" and indeed that is a motto we can all live by! I recommend! read more

Legtimitely one of the best restaurants in H-town. I've been coming here for about 5 years since it's close to work. They have consistently great food. So I came in after buying fajitas next door from La michoacana , just looking for a refresher. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place itself has a nice vibe, clean, and the food is actually pretty solid.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] What threw me off was the drink. There was a sign saying they had a purple drink, so I ordered it expecting exactly that. But when I got it... it was straight up blue. Not even close to purple. I was a bit disappointed, honestly. The guy told me that's just how the drink comes, but it definitely felt a little misleading. That said, the food is good and worth trying. Tasty banh mi and all around good Vietnamese bites. I had been disappointed by banh mi options in Austin so its nice to stumble upon a shop with crispy airy bread like how I had it in Vietnam. The special with pork slices and pate is *chefs kiss*. Their abc noodle soup with beef tastes like Pho - very yummy as a side. I think their grilled pork bowl is a bit salty but husband loved his. Roostar has been recommended by multiple coworkers of mine as having the best banh mi sandwiches in Houston. So, of course, I had to check it out. I will say that the banh mi sandwich I had was good but to call it the best is a bit of an overstatement. I got the special banh mi which has pork and garlic aioli. The price is about the same as other banh mi places but the sandwich was very small. Additionally, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it didn't have a very traditional banh mi taste. It tasted like a fusion between banh mi and Philly cheesesteaks. Again, it was tasty, but just not what I was expecting. The service here is top notch though. Roostar Vietnamese Grill is my go to restaurant for banh mi whenever I'm in Spring Branch, specifically, north of Katy Freeway. Yesterday, I had a chance to introduce banh mi to my friend, who has never tried a Vietnamese sandwich before. He needs to have the best banh mi to set the standard. Parking was pretty easy because we were here in a Sunday evening. I remember the traffic gets worse during commute time. Line wasn't long but prep line was very busy. I ordered a chopped rib eye sandwich and lemongrass chicken sandwich for him. I have been back since my original review. The restaurant employees were very friendly and helpful every time, including during the Covid era. Never miss a beat. Over 6 years ago, I remember vividly right after I posted my review. Within 20 minutes, the owner sent me a message asking who I talked to about my catering experience. That just shows they care about the customers. I'm an avid diner of Roostar more times that I would like to admit but they are fast, convenient, consistent, and delicious. The price is steep for Vietnamese food, $9+ for banh mi, and protein is a little scarce in some dishes like the curry. Banh mi bread is soft and won't cut the roof of your mouth. The garlic aioli butter is decadent yet leaving you wanting more. The lemongrass chicken is always moist and tender. The veggies are not traditionally cut or thick enough for some banh mi connoisseurs. Lately, I've been obsessed with the Asian slaw with added chicken. It's refreshing and light. Sometimes DoorDash has the slaw and other dishes for bogo free. If you haven't had Roostar banh mi living in Houston, you're living under a rock. read more

The consistently solid bahn mi sandwiches from this location has been a staple for many a road trip routing thru Houston. Most recently, we ordered the grilled pork bahn mi and the special (pork belly, ham, pate) bahn mi. Quality and taste were on point as usual: crisp bread crust with soft interior, fresh veggies, tasty meat fillings. This time I branched out and tried their beef alphabet soup. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is kinda of in the middle of nowhere, and it's just a simple place from the inside[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], but the sandwiches were really good, and the curries were also very very good. I loved the ribeye Banh Mi, so that's what I will recommend, but I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. Service was lightning fast too. Definitely try it out. read more

Probably the best banh mi I've ever had! Definitely one of the top spots and I've been from the west coast to the east coast of the United States and the banh mi here is like nothing else. Food: My family and I got the loaded fries, banh mi, and the alphabet soup (honorable mention btw! Very well seasoned and not bland at all). Loaded fries were great, loved the cilantro and how well sauced the entire dish was. Banh mi was the star of the show. Why? The pate. The pate is GREAT here. Never had other pate like it. Service: Service was okay, nothing super special but the food did come out pretty quickly. Easy to find parking too. Overall, I love this place a lot. When I come back to Texas, I'll definitely be visiting again and taking friends and family. read more

Houston has so many affordable banh mi shops, the one thing they all have in common is the extra toasted baguette that painfully cut up the roof of your mouth at the end of your sandwich. Was craving a banh mi for a week now and finally ordered one from Roostar. The baguette is soft and crunchy and fresh, the veggies both sweet and tangy. The pork and ham almost melt in your mouth and adding an egg takes it to the next level. I will be ordering this again and again. Perfect size sandwich so I don't feel too full just satisfied. The beef curry is also great but the banh mi is star of the show. Iced coffee hits on all cylinders too. No pics because I took one bite and couldn't stop eating! read more

Roostar has expanded from their original location and this spot is in Spring Branch on Gessner. There's some parking spaces in the lot and adjacent lot. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's also indoor and outdoors seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It's a fast casual spot with no service; a few banh mi and other viet options. Their grilled pork banh mi is pretty solid; it's a bit light on the quantity of pork and missing the liver pate but at least their bread tastes fresh and has the right consistency. read more

I'm kinda addicted to their food. Love the pate you can add to their banh mi. Love the seasoned tofu, which is a rarity for me, and I love the juicy chicken, which is never ever dry! The owners are active in the community and were donating along with others, free food to those who lost power during hurricane Beryl. Their own stores were without power for over a week. The sandwiches were pretty good. I would say a solid 6-7 or so. The bread was nice and toasty and fresh. There was enough meat. I wish they did put in more pickled veggies though. We also ordered the creamed corn and salad. We liked the salad and it was nice and refreshing. The creamed corn was a miss for us but I could see how people would like it if they like coconut a lot. This is one of my go-to places for a quick takeout meal. I've been to multiple locations, and the foods have always been consistent. My recent order was from this location (Gessner), and it was a delivery order to eat at home. I always like ordering the rice boxes with 2 proteins. The boxes come with just 1 with options to add extras (meats, etc.) if you want as well as pickled carrots and other veggies. I ordered the Sous Vide Pork Belly Box with Crispy Tofu (Wholeshebang flavor) and also the Grilled Chicken Box with Chopped Ribeye. I chose fried rice and house fish sauce with the orders. All of the meats were flavorful, and the boxes were packed. They are on the pricier side though compared to other similar Viet food places, but the flavors, portion sizes, and speed definitely make it worth it. read more

Fast and furious . It's kind of like a fast food Viet spot. There are a few tables inside and outside. There were a lot of pick up orders as well. Tried: Grilled pork banh mi - it was standard, the meat is a mix of really soft and tender and then some burnt pieces, marinade was ok Chopped ribeye box - this was ok, tons of rice and meat, cha gio was a bit bland even with the sauce I also had the beef alphabet soup and coconut cream corn. The soup was flavorful, slightly salty but very tasty. The coconut cream corn was soooooo very good. Overall, it was a good experience. Will def go back. read more

A cute little restaurant. I love Roostar! I use to get their lemongrass tofu banh mi, but my friend recommended the special banh mi.. and man oh man, is it delicious! It comes with so much pate too.. mhmm yum! The sandwiches are a decent size.. and I was full after eating it. We ordered 2 banh mi's (one with an egg) and some eggrolls. This place is my go to usually for bahn mi! I've ventured out my most recent time and got their fried rice bowl with bulgogi, egg, and jalapeño cream sauce and it was also really good. The cream sauce adds great flavor to the dish and is worth paying extra for. What aren't pictured are the AMAZING lemon pepper wings. They're a must get every time I come here. They have the perfect amount of coating and are made fresh! I usually them with fried whole also getting a side of fried rice. Their fries are amazing and are also not to be missed. Fantastic Food! I absolutely love Bahn mi. I'm a real traditional/classic guy. This place is amazing, but it's a little bit of a twist on flavors vs just hitting China Town and getting the old classics at Lees Sandwich shop. I'm definitely not complaining.... I really enjoyed the Vietnamese Cole slaw and the garlic bread. The garlic bread did have a little too much sauce but easy to remove. Both Bahn Mi Sandwiches, "the special and classic" were off the CHAIN!! Amazing flavor and amazing bread!! The French bread can make or break a Bahn mi. Roostar has a reason to crow. This Vietnamese Banh mi shop is very small but simply put, Delicious. We decided a Banh mi for the plane ride home worked well. The other passangers were curious as to what we having as it smelled good. We ordered 2 Bahn mi's with grilled pork, pickled veggies, jalapenos and pate. The accompanying sauce was spot on. They threw in a french roll coated in garlic and butter, AMAZING too! The french roll was crispy outside with a soft, light airy inside. It was perfectly made. I was really looking forward to trying Roostar Vietnamese Grill, but my experience was extremely disappointing. My order was filled incorrectly, and when I brought it to the manager's attention, they were very dismissive. This was by far the worst customer service I've encountered. While I had heard good things about their food, the poor handling of the situation completely overshadowed the experience. Mistakes happen, but the way they were addressed left a lot to be desired. read more

This place have really good Bánh mì. It is a little bit overprice, you can get the same food for cheaper somewhere else, but we do think their food has a unique taste . We would definitely come back. read more

I came to check out a vietnamese restaurant because I didn't know what to eat for lunch and I was starving. When i came in the place was kind of busy with several tables taken, people waiting to order or waiting to pick up a to-go order. I viewed the menu and basically wanted to order everything on the menu. I talked through the menu with the cashier, Dat who gave me details of items on the menu. I decided to order 1 order of egg rolls (2), 1 order of bread with pate and butter, a deluxe special sandwich with pork, and an order of curry fries. Everything was super delicious and I definitely over ordered simply because I was hungry but overall I would definitely come back with friends to get lunch here! The service was also very good. Yes yes yes! So the bbq pork sandwich are very nostalgic for me and the place I went in my childhood is no longer open. This place filled the spot with ease. The food was delicious and I can't wait to go try more items. It's a fast food style place, but there's also tables and seating areas if you don't want to take the food to go.
