Roostar has been recommended by multiple coworkers of mine as having the best banh mi sandwiches in Houston. So, of course, I had to check it out. I will say that the banh mi sandwich I had was good but to call it the best is a bit of an overstatement. I got the special banh mi which has pork and garlic aioli. The price is about the same as other banh mi places but the sandwich was very small. Additionally, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it didn't have a very traditional banh mi taste. It tasted like a fusion between banh mi and Philly cheesesteaks. Again, it was tasty, but just not what I was expecting. The service here is top notch though. Although there was minimal interaction between customers and employees, they were welcoming and answered questions with a smile.

Just for the record. These prices are seen on April 1, 2017.

Roostar Vietnamese Grill is my go to restaurant for banh mi whenever I'm in Spring Branch, specifically, north of Katy Freeway. Yesterday, I had a chance to introduce banh mi to my friend, who has never tried a Vietnamese sandwich before. He needs to have the best banh mi to set the standard. Parking was pretty easy because we were here in a Sunday evening. I remember the traffic gets worse during commute time. Line wasn't long but prep line was very busy. I ordered a chopped rib eye sandwich and lemongrass chicken sandwich for him. I have been back since my original review. The restaurant employees were very friendly and helpful every time, including during the Covid era. Never miss a beat. Over 6 years ago, I remember vividly right after I posted my review. Within 20 minutes, the owner sent me a message asking who I talked to about my catering experience. That just shows they care about the customers. I used to come here often because I work north of this Gessner location. After being work from home, I go to the one by Galleria because it's near my house.

The girls from the office decided to check out this nearby restaurant + one of us loved they were UH alum. This location looks small from the outside, but has plenty of space during off hours. Service was nice, food prep was fast and everything was delicious.

Quick, tasty, and popular. Service and atmosphere: This place offers good number of seating places but they get taken quickly during lunch time. The restaurant was clean and staff were operating efficiently. Food and drinks: Good selection of various options. You can also build your own box/bowl. The ordering process was easy and quick. The food came fairly fast considering how busy they were. The food tested good. You can order soft drink with your meals. Pricing: $$ affordable and definitely good spot for quick bite or takeaway.

Just got off a plane from NYC and Roostar (even before going home) is the first place I hit! Yes, Roostar has better banh mi than NYC. It's not even a contest. If I wanted cheap Chinese or sushi, NYC has houston beat.... BUT Vietnamese.... BUT Tex Mex.... Come on. It's not even close. I plan on coming back a lot.

Love it! Definitely the best Banh Mi I've had, but I haven't tried many. The place is kinda of in the middle of nowhere, and it's just a simple place from the inside, but the sandwiches were really good, and the curries were also very very good. I loved the ribeye Banh Mi, so that's what I will recommend, but I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. Service was lightning fast too. Definitely try it out.

Fantastic spot for lunch. The ribeye banh mi was so flavorful. The matcha green tea was the perfect addition.

Probably the best banh mi I've ever had! Definitely one of the top spots and I've been from the west coast to the east coast of the United States and the banh mi here is like nothing else. Food: My family and I got the loaded fries, banh mi, and the alphabet soup (honorable mention btw! Very well seasoned and not bland at all). Loaded fries were great, loved the cilantro and how well sauced the entire dish was. Banh mi was the star of the show. Why? The pate. The pate is GREAT here. Never had other pate like it. Service: Service was okay, nothing super special but the food did come out pretty quickly. Easy to find parking too. Overall, I love this place a lot. When I come back to Texas, I'll definitely be visiting again and taking friends and family.

Houston has so many affordable banh mi shops, the one thing they all have in common is the extra toasted baguette that painfully cut up the roof of your mouth at the end of your sandwich. Roostar Vietnamese Grill has perfected the way they prepare their baguette to ensure customer satisfaction. The banh mi is definitely priced higher, but I'd splurge on their sandwiches just to not experience discomfort. I've also catered Roostar Vietnamese Grill for parties, the banh mi is cut in half and individually wrapped for an easy, delicious, and no mess to clean up. This is such a hot item for any occasion, there won't be any leftovers and you're guaranteed to satisfy your audience.

Roostar has expanded from their original location and this spot is in Spring Branch on Gessner. There's some parking spaces in the lot and adjacent lot. There's also indoor and outdoors seating. It's a fast casual spot with no service; a few banh mi and other viet options. Their grilled pork banh mi is pretty solid; it's a bit light on the quantity of pork and missing the liver pate but at least their bread tastes fresh and has the right consistency.

I'm kinda addicted to their food. Love the pate you can add to their banh mi. Love the seasoned tofu, which is a rarity for me, and I love the juicy chicken, which is never ever dry! The owners are active in the community and were donating along with others, free food to those who lost power during hurricane Beryl. Their own stores were without power for over a week. Really enjoy the variety of their menu. There's something for everyone, and the flavors are all there!

What can I say I'm a sucker for fabulously fried wings! Popped in for lunch and service was fast and friendly. All the food and drinks options were clear and tasted great. The location is in a well placed spot with decent parking. They seem to have a lot of takeout or delivery orders so you know the food is good to pay those fees. The Bahn mi were crispy with the nice bread if you know what I mean. It's a nice spot for lunch or snacks!

Roostar is a no-brainer for fast Vietnamese food in the neighborhood. There are several parking spots in the small strip center and a casual atmosphere when you enter the restaurant. They have a decent number of options on their menu, but I tend to gravitate to their chicken rice plate which also includes an eggroll. It is plenty of food and I love the grilled flavor on their chicken thighs, balanced with the freshness of the vegetables, and fat from the fish sauce.

Lots of TVs to watch the Olympic Games while you wait for dinner. I liked watching the open pizza oven. They make a lot of pizzas here. The Eat, Drink, HTX menus are a great way to try new restaurants while giving back to the Houston Food Bank. A starter, an entree and a dessert. $25 for dinner. So many choices on this menu. A great deal while helping out those in need. "Started" with the Turkey Samosas. Four crispy pastries that are filled with seasoned ground turkey, potatoes and parsley served with cucumber yogurt. Delicious! The Ember & Greens Soup that my family had was hot, hot, hot and so tasty. The fresh soup was filled with a blend of spinach, parsley, and cilantro with chickpeas, caramelized onions, pinto beans and quinoa. My FIL polished off his bowl! For dinner, we all had the Blackened Salmon. The salmon with lemon butter and avocado salsa served on roasted carrots, broccoli and potatoes and a bed of quinoa. It was a full plate, which we all took home for dinner the next day. Note: it is quite buttery. My FIL had his butter and avocado salsa on the side which worked for him. I loved mine as is. Even though we were pretty full, we still enjoyed dessert. The tiramisu was so indulgent. Loved the layered mascarpone custard, whipped cream, coffee liqueur and coffee-soaked ladyfingers. My FLI had the Chia Seed Pudding with fresh berries. What a great meal. We had a slight hiccup where the appetizers came slightly after the main meal was served, but they were so honest about what happened that I still have to give them five stars for their food and their service. Would try them again for their generous, delicious meals. Lots of parking. Water glasses were frequently filled both with and without meals. Thank you for a really nice Sunday night dinner with family.

It was a beautiful day, so it would have been the perfect day to eat outside if you like that. I'm an eat indoors kind of person, but if you like to eat outside, they do have a few tables for that. I was meeting a friend for lunch and she suggested Ember & Green. We really couldn't decide what to order, so we decided to order a few things and share them. We started off with the Persian Cucumber Sald. It had Persian cucumbers, heirloom cherry tomatoes, red onions, and Kalamata olives with oil and lemon dressing and topped with parsley and feta cheese. Let me tell you, thats lemon dressing was delicious! It went so well with the cucumbers. Next we ordered Blackened salmon with lemon butter and avocado salsa, served with charred broccolini, roasted carrots and potatoes on a bed of cilantro green pea quinoa. I'm really not a huge fan of salmon, but I'm trying to like it more by trying it different ways. The spices that they put on the salmon were really good, not too spicy, but also, not bland. It was also cooked perfectly. Oh, and that lemon butter... that lemon butter made the meal if you ask me. It was so good. So good in fact, I had to try and make salmon with lemon butter at him the very next week. Mine didn't come out as good as Ember & Greens, but it was decent. That just means that I need to leave the cooking to the professional. For dessert we decided to share the Skillet Cookie. Its a house made chocolate chip cookie baked in a cast iron skillet and topped with Amy's Mexican Vanilla Ice Cream and chocolate sauce. This was the only thing that we ordered that was a nope. I dont know what happened, but it didn't seem like it was cooked at all in the middle. We took a few bites, that was all we could eat of it. All and all, it was a good experience and I will go back. I'll just skip dessert next time.

We finished almost everything except a quarter of the Pan, about a quarter of the rice, and about a third of the ribeye. All were great dishes and would definitely order again. We skipped dessert because honestly none stood out to us. He said their popular dessert is the souffle but they were sold out. Our total before gratuity was about $250 and that included one cocktail. There were a lot of staff on this Sunday afternoon, but didn't really see there was much effort into the overall experience. The food station was dirty and messy, there were gnats flying around our food where we were sitting, and when we got our zeppelins, it was drenched or drowning in the dressing and th overall sandwich was overly salty because of it. I ordered the Mediterranean Cobb and held off on the blue cheese and subbed feta. The grilled chicken literally was so chewy and tasted like rubber I had to spit it out and then pick the rest of the chicken out, this place is NOT cheap. Quite pricey for a large sub stuffed with a salad. If you're paying $15 for a sandwich, you expect to get quality ingredients. The chicken was not edible. Staff just stood around and would chit chat, not really attentive or maintaining the restaurant very well. For instance, we ordered the Greek fajitas, which was pieces of gyro meat with bell peppers, and onions served on a hot sizzling plate. It was very similar to going somewhere and ordering a Gyro plate, but I appreciated the way it was served. The meat was tender and so well seasoned. In my opinion it's hard to get Gyros right, it's easy to dry it out, and often it's too salty. That's not the case here! Around the table people ordered a slew of diverse dishes, and the clear winner was the lamb shank! Next time we go we're getting that. The person who owns this place is incredibly sweet, there was a birthday party at the table next to us, and she came by to us, introduced herself, and explained that when they drop plates to celebrate we are to join in, and yell Opa! There are more tables and seating outside in front with napkins rolls available which I sat at when the food ready. The Coffee Cowboy pizza had coffee-crusted hereford flank steak, smoked onion bianco sauce, mozz, white cheddar, caramelized onion, smoked salt, and truffled arugula. But sadly wasn't to my liking along with the Dad's Bruschetta. Overall, food wasn't really to my liking, and recommend ordering ahead of time.
