The dishes and value for price here are not as advertised. I ordered the $22 spaghetti and meatballs - this is sadly the worst pasta I've ever had. I would've told our server but she was really hard to catch the attention of. The marinara tastes like tomato jelly - very sweet and under-seasoned. The meatballs were also under-seasoned and incredibly dry, quite difficult to cut into. I don't understand why you would serve this and serve it for $22. By the time I could get our server's attention, I just decided to close out and leave. read more

We've eaten at Romul's many times over the years when visiting Hood River, and the food and service has always been amazing. We're now local residents and look forward to making this our go-to Italian restaurant. Last night we enjoyed the chicken parmesan and chicken marsala which were both excellent! Their marinara sauce is light and filled with flavor, the marsala was creamy and yummy. I'll have a hard time ordering something else next time. I was visiting family in the area and they said they wanted to go to Romuls, so five of us went there. The restaurant was beautiful, cloth napkins, servers were okay, they were just as nice and attentive and they needed to be. The bread was actually quite unique and tasted awesome. I recognized the owner from pictures online and was taken aback to see him dressed in comfy clothes, like something I've seen men lounge around the house and sleep in. We thought that was odd, but whatever, to each his own. But he seemed friendly and tried to interact with his guests. One setback was the menu prices in the restaurant did NOT match the menu screenshots found online. We were prepared for the $18 per plate price posted online, so we were a little shocked to see the $18 items were now ranging between $20 - $21. One in our group ordered the lasagna, which wasn't pretty, but he said it tasted good. The rest of us ordered chicken parm with alfredo noodles The noodles were actually flavorful, despite many reviews claiming bland food. Here is where we ran into a problem - the chicken 'breasts'. Normally when you tear into a chicken breast it shreds with the grain of the protein. However, this chicken appeared to be processed, compressed meat. It was rubbery and weird to cut into, like it wasn't even 100% compressed BREAST meat; it seemed to have more fatty chicken components mixed into the compressed meat patty. The four of us all left a good amount of chicken 'breast' behind on our plate. No one bothered to notice or ask if there was a problem. Quite frankly, based on several reviews about an easily angered owner, we didn't want to stir up trouble anyways so we didn't say anything. So at first our final opinion of the place is that we might come back someday, but just avoid the chicken 'breast' dishes. Unfortunately, before we could actually leave we had one definitively bad experience. The owner in the comfy clothes reached between a couple of us to grab some plates and we got kicked in the face with a bad odor. It was a stale manly underarm smell masked slightly with deodorant, like the odor a man gets after a day or two without a shower. It was that moment that swayed my decision to never go back. If they read their reviews and even care, their takeaway from this would be: update your online menu prices, continue to season your food well, get rid of that weird processed chicken 'breast' meat you are using in dishes, and the owner should consider upgrading his work attire and body freshness while interacting with customers. After all, this is a restaurant and aromas are an important aspect in this industry. read more

We 5 (+ twins - almost 2 yrs) came on a Sunday evening and were seated immediately. Ordered a bottle of Sangiovese (to be subsequently followed by another one.) The service was excellent and the owner was nearby during the time we were there. The "kidz" wanted cheese, cheese, cheese. The waitress brought two plates and shreaded, what appeared to be a 1/4 lb on to each plate. They were happy. We were happy. The food was outstanding. My "measure" at an Italian restaurant is linguini and claims. Here, the clams were fresh and the linguini "just right" and served in a plate/pot-like) dish. And it was excellent. The best I've had excepting, of course, Italy. We also had eggplant chips, stuffed dates, gnocchi, girella primavera, the torte of the day, bread pudding, gelato AND espresso. We are foodies with discriminating palates, and love when we find places and people who are passionate about great food. This is that kind of place, and these are those people! I feel a little bad leaving this review because everyone who worked at Romul's was super nice to us and I really *really* wanted to like the food there. I had the chicken parm with alfredo sauce, and my husband had the manicotti. Huge portion sizes, and fast service, but oh man, both of these dishes were so incredibly bland I didn't even want to finish it. Went here for Valentine's Day weekend dinner with some girl friends and it was nothing short of perfect! The lobster ravioli and vodka al penne were so rich and amazing. Gourmet level and old world styled Italian food, well anointed wine list, beautiful European-like decor and motifs, and Italian opera music that added to the romance of our date and celebration . The owner seated and served us, gave very honest menu recommendations and even brought us a couple of stems of sparking wine for our celebration. I was ready to pay corkage on a special bottle of wine I brought and that was waved, so I shared some of it with her and her chef-husband. They interacted with us, made us feel welcome and guided us through the menu. This was the best Italian food I've had in a very long time and at reasonable prices. Sauce was like they had thrown on some tomato sauce from a can and called it a day!! My friend and I did not even get what we ordered. Hers had chicken "bits"in it which she did not even want. My Eggplant Parmesan was terrible and looked like a "bunch of burnt cheese double fried thrown on top of some gray matter." The service was not good either. When we were outside to be seated no one is there to greet you. There should be someone out there greeting people very disorganized! I'm giving a 4 on potential. I was quite crestfallen that one of my favorite eateries in Bingen would be closed for moving on my most recent visit to the gorge. Now off to find a new restaurant that isn't a giant brewery or a pretentious snobby cafe. I had heard good things about Romuls so I tried it out with my wife and friends. We brought two kiddos and the waitress was very accommodating with their needs. However, the place seemed a little understaffed and service suffered as a result. We had to actually ask for our dessert menus. Pasta was fresh. Can't really get that anywhere. It was a little dense and clunky though. I got the bolognese and I feel it would have been better with a lighter noodle like a parpadelle, but what do I know. My wife got the Lobster Ravioli and my behest. A light should have gone off when I saw the difference in the cost from the other dishes. Proportionally it was more inexpensive than the other dishes. Basically the ravioli were filled with cheese and bits of ground up lobster. Probably not that much actual lobster thence the lower price. I'd probably go back and try some other things. The dessert definitely saved this place. Excellent tiramisu. Give it a try. Try some things other than what I did. Maybe this place is awesome. Prove me wrong. read more

Great little Italian restaurant. We were looking for a romantic place for our anniversary. This little gem was the right place. The owners were very friendly. They even sent over champagne after dinner as a gift. On to the food: Eggplant Parmesan chips with marinara sauce were perfectly crispy and not at all greasy. Chicken Parmesan over spaghetti was my favorite Pear bread pudding was the best. I always try the bread pudding if it's on a menu. This one is a winner for sure. read more

STAY AWAY!!!!! This restaurant is the worst restaurant I have ever been due to very rude staff and poor Covid procedures. If I could give a zero I would. This business will fail miserably in winter as they have no clear cut method in which to handle lines and people waiting for tables during these tough Covid times. Just got take out there for our anniversary. The food was amazing, the service excellent, and the attention to detail was amazing for take out. They included focaccia bread, oil/vinegar combo and fresh Parmesan for each of us. I had the manicotti, my husband the carbonara, and our son the Mac and cheese. We shared a pear salad. I live in town and I had avoided coming into this establishment as I have some dietary restrictions and I thought the hassle of eating gluten free and low carb in an Italian restaurant would be difficult. Not at Romul's. My group of 6 came in at 8:30 (they close at 9) and we were immediately greeted with hospitality and weren't made to feel like we were coming in too late or rushed as some places in OR have been. We sat down and our waiter Kilian (sp) took to waters and drinks. I asked him my options for being gluten free and eating low carb. He was so knowledgeable about what low carb and gluten free was, I was blown away. Usually I have to do all of the thought process and suggestions on side substitutions, but Kilian had it under control. I ordered a Mediterranean Chicken off the specials list. It was stuffed with feta and spinach, topped with a scrumptious cream sauce and accompanied by delicious zucchini. I was in heaven. Romul's himself even came to check on us.
