We finally went to this charming Italian restaurant after reading great reviews, and we were not disappointed. Old school atmosphere without a staged look- felt warm & personal. Complimentary delicious sliced bread came to our table to eat with the olive oil & balsamic sitting there. Nice, healthy glass of a delicious red wine, and the roasted pear gorgonzola salad came next , which we devoured. The spaghetti carbonara was creamy & comforting, and my husband's evening special of prawns & pork cheek , with fresh sautéed spinach atop cheesy warm polenta was delicious. Too full for dessert, we ordered Tiramisu to go. The Owner came to our table with 2 glasses of complimentary Prosecco & as we sipped, his Lovely wife came to check how everything was. We had a reservation, but we arrived and the owner said they don't take small party reservations. So we had to wait 45 minutes for a table. Then another family arrived and said they had a reservation, but were also told they don't take reservations for small parties. So they are disorganized. The server didn't know anything about the wines and was inattentive. Food was just okay. The lasagna sauce was chunky with undercooked vegetables, so my teenager didn't like it. Small town gem. Food was very good, but what stood out to me was the care & attentiveness of the staff, especially the owner. He was mixing drinks at the bar, but continually walked around the dining room floor chatting with regulars & checking on all of his customers. Very friendly & clearly takes pride in his establishment which seems to be a labor of love. Would definitely recommend dropping in if you're in the area. read more

We were staying in town for a couple of days and decided to try this place. Monica was our waitress. She was helpful and informative as we tried to navigate their very large menu. She was even willing to try to make a mixed drink she had never heard of. The food was fantastic. They even gave us complimentary glasses of prosecco with are desserts. read more

Well, we should've listened to the reviews, but we were fooled by the outside appearance of this restaurant. The Caesar salad did not have any form of Caesar dressing taste that remotely tasted like a Caesar but was so watered down with a queer light vinegar rotten taste that forced me to have to doctor it with tons of salt and pepper. The lasagna and the pasta Bolognese were terrible with the noodles being a mushy soft and the sauce not being Bolognese or meat sauce, but rather some sort of sweetened Americanized marinara junk. The waitress responded that they don't advertise al dente pasta, and when the owner came over, he was very angry and disrespectful, even though we were trying to approach the situation professionally. read more

The owner makes amazing drinks and makes all his guests feel like they've been best friends for years. While the service was good along with the decor, the food was a bit bland. We started with bruschetta and it didn't really taste like anything, the pear salad was great. Then the entrees came and the chicken was very small and thin, the spaghetti and meatballs were bland and meatballs were chewy. What a lovely classic restaurant in Hoid River. The owner welcomed us as did his wife. We started with a Caprese salad with local heirloom tomatoes to share. The prawns romesco was the star of the show with the roasted peppers shining through. We also ordered the cod Parmesan, Osso bucco, Our waiter was attentive and enthusiastic. And had good recommendations. We are big eaters and we had to take leftovers home. When the owner found out we were celebrating birthdays he gave the birthday boys a dessert each. Very very expensive and overpriced for what you get. Staff is fabulous but the salad was warm, tomato sauce was too sweet, and everything was really expensive. I split the chicken parm and that was a great portion size but overall, not worth it. It's a nice place for a special occasion if you have money. For a casual dinner, I recommend going to the taco place across the street. They did give us a nice complimentary dessert at the end though. read more

Go for drinks! Sit at the bar and the owner, Dominic, will take care of you! He makes a killer martini and when he pours it, your martini glass will be filled to the rim! Every time. The wine pours are more than generous! The small bar - about 6 stools - is typically filled with locals who stop in after they close up their store. Conversation is lively and friendly. This is a family owned business and it's obvious that they all want their customers to have a great experience. Even their granddaughter, Bella, who is a server, exudes such positivity and excitement over sharing her family's food. We really enjoyed the appetizer of eggplant crisps which was lightly breaded and fried eggplant slices dusted with Parmesan. Very tasty. My veal parmigiana did fall short, the extremely thin and tiny piece of veal completely obscured by the massive amount of mozzarella. It was served over spaghetti that was cooked too long covered in tomato sauce that was extremely sweet, like ketchup sweet. Just wrong. It's unfortunate as the drinks and service were so stellar. My friend's dish was equally disappointing, the fresh caught salmon was over cooked and dry, the roasted potatoes luke warm. The sautéed zucchini was the star of the dish. We would definitely go back to sit at the bar, enjoy cocktails and have an appetizer and salad. read more

It was OK at best. They work hard to provide a fine dining experience, but nothing was exceptional. I actually expected more authenticity in the food, but instead it seemed like they catered more to American dining by adding excessive cream and cheese to many dishes. The price didn't really align well with that either. I'm a good chef, but not great. It's disappointing when I know I could make something better at home for much, much cheaper. read more

We loved eating here and now will continue to do so. However, we are bar people and I'm told we can't just come in for wine or wine and an app and sit at the bar?? Is this true? I had the mushroom ravioli & the white sauce was very sweet. Not sure why? My husband had chicken parm & liked it. His sauce was sweet too. I know sometimes a pinch of sugar is added to tomato sauce but not white. I couldn't finish it. But, I'd go back and try it another dish. The service was excellent and the owner was a very nice guy! While the waitstaff was incredible, my clam linguine arrived completely drowning in a "white wine butter sauce" -- that tasted more like watered down broth. Large portions and flavor. We got into Hood River Close to 8pm on Friday evening and landed at Romul's at 830pm. They graciously seated us and provided top notch service even with the restaurant closing at 9pm. We really enjoyed connecting with the owner and learning about the history of his family business and our server providing great recs. The imported wine selection was a refreshing change as locals who are accustomed to the amazing Pinots of the region. So worth the regular seasonal trek to Hood River to be transported back to Italy! Maria's wonderfully fresh and authentic cuisine is delectable, Romul's wine pairings are perfect and Dominic's service is always over the top. I'm so thankful they're so near Portland and easy to get to seasonally or more frequently. I appreciate their offerings are seasonal and local and fresh, but even moreso that it is the nearest thing to being back in Italy this side of the Mississippi, right here in our own back yard. Their fish is always light and fresh, their sauces are wonderfully balanced, their pasta is freshly made to perfection. This little gem is a family favorite! Romuls was absolutely incredible! I had the penne alla vodka, and it honestly tasted just like the Italian food I grew up with back in Europe. It's so hard to find truly authentic flavors here in the States, but they nailed it. My partner ordered the Mediterranean chicken, and it was amazing too -- so fresh and flavorful. On top of the great food, the staff was really sweet and made us feel so welcome. The whole place has such a cozy, inviting vibe. Great experience!!! From the moment you enter the door the staff is so nice and friendly. That is what stands out for me. They made our evening lovely. Our meals were delicious. We shared the small Caesar and the portion was large. I had the veal parm and the cheese was melty and gooey and the veal was very thin as I like it. Triple chocolate cake was magical. Stopped in on a random Friday night with my family as we drove from Portland. We were seated right away. The place was clean and inviting. Our server was phenomenal. He was attentive, friendly and accommodating. The other servers were just as great. We were checked on regularly and by the owner. He was also friendly. We noticed how playful he was with a toddler from the next table. The food was prompt and delicious. I got the Osso Bucco which was flavorful and tender. We were able to get ongoing focaccia. Before the enormous tiramisu came, my kids were treated to a little mousse filled chocolate tulip and I got a complimentary glass of champagne.
