I loved it! The garlic and Brie soup was a surprise. Really good. Steaks were amazing! Had a nice grilled taste and cooked perfectly. I had spaghetti on the side and the flavor was super, pasta cooked perfect. The only thing I didn't like was noodles should have been drained a bit more. Too much liquid on the plate drowning the steak. I used my bread plate for my steak and everything was great. Creme brûlée was so creamy and sugary! Yumminess! We were lucky to get a table. There was a misunderstanding with our reservation and they got us in! Feel so fortunate. I would definitely drive out here for dinner! Love the ambience and the service was great. Man I hate leaving low reviews but I feel it's necessary. Service is spot on, very friendly. Prices are not cheap. Ok we went to Hood River for an escape, yep during COVID and not everything was open for dine in. This place was and we decided to give it a try, holy hell they make some amazing food!! We came to Hood after a day hiking and looking at waterfalls., this place looked interesting and after looking at the menu went in. Two of us had the eggplant Parmesan and thought it was by far the best they ever had. The Tomatillo Chicken was also excellent. Melissa was an excellent server and Lisa was also fun to chat with. We've be coming to Hood River for years and have always wanted to try this place. We would have been better off leaving it on the bucket list. Subterranean was subpar. We walked in to a half empty restaurant and were told they didn't have a table for 5 (despite multiple tables available for 6). Nonetheless we persisted. Seated and ordered a bottle of wine (wine was good), dinner shortly after. We asked for bread - were not impressed. We ordered three specials, each were underwhelming and over priced. Weird service and mediocre food, we learned a $175 lesson. Won't return. read more

This little subterranean sort of hole in the ground, is an excellent spot for getting some serious perfect cuisine. I ordered the shrimp appetizer in garlic and wine sauce and the shrimp were cooked to perfection. My family and friends ordered at another place and they were all very jealous of my food. I've been here a couple of times now, and had the same experience twice. The wait staff (lady with short hair) is very polite, friendly and attentive but in no way overbearing. CON: They don't have sparkling water (most places in HR don't) and the bread you get with dinner is mediocre at best...very best. PRO: The service is really good, the food is delicious! The restaurant is in the basement with narrow staircase going down. Hostess/waitress was very friendly. We ordered ribeye, flat iron steak and linguine carbonara. The meal came with soup or salad and a side. The clam chowder was not quite creamy enough. We asked for medium rare flag iron steak, medium ribeye. The middle half of the flat iron steak was rare. We had to send it back. The kitchen fixed to by searing the steak, but the middle (now a smaller portion) was still rare. We just ate around it. Ribeye was charred around the edges. But most of the steak was close to medium rare instead of medium as we requested. Linguine carbonara was good, huge portion. Service was great. We enjoyed the casual vibe. It was raining and we were looking for a place to wait out the rain. We saw the sign that said Happy Hour and we followed the arrow to the basement, like the name of the restaurant, Subterranean. It was their first day of offering HH, in time for the Blossom Festival, so they don't really have a HH menu yet. But we were told that it was $1.00 off the Appetizers and specials on the house wines and cocktails. We had a great experience here. Our bar tender/waitperson was really friendly and personable. She gave us the scoop on Hood River and we had a great conversation. The atmosphere was casual and cozy and family friendly. And the place was clean and presentable. I brought my mom here for her birthday and everyone on in our party was disappointed. She ordered the salmon dinner and was served to her without any sides just a single piece of salmon her plate! When we asked our server about it she was rude and told us it didn't come with a side because it was the daily special although it was clearly written that it came with a side. When out bill came we paid in cash with a $100 bill and then waited another 15 minutes for the waitress to return. I finally had to flag her down and she made it obvious that I was bother her just to get our change. She claimed she "forgot". The service was beyond terrible, she scammed us with our food then tried scamming us with our change and the food was only mediocre. Went here for dinner tonight. Recommended by the hotel. Nice cozy spot in an old downtown basement of sorts. I would give it a 4.5, but that is not an option here. Service excellent. Had the tortellini with marinara sauce. Both were outstanding, although the marinara was spicier than I like, in fact my lips are still kind of burning as I write this 30 minutes after. I would rather my marinara come For me to spice up, but hey, this is how they do it and it was a damn tasty marinara. One of the best. My aging guts will be unhappy later. The garlic and Brie soup. Stumbled in, probably just about closing time. Met with a smile, as I asked about the late hour and was told everything was good, as the young man lead me to my table. Perfect in every way. Nice glass of wine with an excellent filet. Perfectly medium rare. Nice salad and baked potato too, but the star was most definitely the steak. Great relaxed vibe and I discovered on the way out, that this is a family operation. Makes it even more special. Thank you. Been working in Hood River for about a year and a half. The hubs and I came to the Subterranean for our anniversary dinner and it was wonderful! The atmosphere was cozy and romantic. The service was fantastic. The waitress was very informative and attentive. I had the lemon chicken with the mashed potatoes. The chicken was cooked perfectly and had a delightful crunchy coating. The sauce, oh my god, the sauce. If I could die in a vat of it, I would. Since it was a special occasion, I had a sparkling wine. I can't remember what vineyard it came from, but it was good and sweet. The husband had a carbonara that he really likes. I thought it was on the rich side since it was a carbonara with alfredo sauce. He had a draft beer from their decently sized draft list. He enjoyed whatever he had. On a long drive between Eastern Oregon and Portland, through the Gorge, I needed a place to stop and walk around. I wanted to find a locals type of restaurant to relax and be left alone and this place was perfect. It is literally subterranean. A steep flight of stairs leads you to an intimate restaurant. It was bigger than I initially thought. The restaurant had about 4 tables full when I arrived and quickly filled completely before my meal was done. They did have a large party reservation, which may have made it seem busier than expected. The food was wonderful. I'd never had a blue cheese salad with sundried tomatoes and found it surprisingly enjoyable. The steak I had was a large, thick cut, perfect to my taste. The vegetables were heavily buttered and bite sized. I would definitely come back here, particularly for a romantic evening. read more

My husband ordered the chicken cordon blue... it looked like frozen shrimp and chicken with a piece of deli ham laid on top and his pasta was cold. We felt ignored. Locals came in and got all of the attention. Don't order the garlic and brie soup. It was mostly broth, almost no veggies, and where was the brie? We ordered dessert and coffee and waited more than five minutes for our coffee. Oh, and did I say locals? I am not against locals, but don't ignore your other "paying customers!" My friends and I decided to try something new for dinner. Walking around downtown HR we spotted this place, enticed by the sign reading "Happy Hour" we all agreed that we should give it a shot! Unfortunately all 5 of us were smushed together in the "only clean table available" (which was actually a 4 person booth) according to who I presume to be the owner. After sitting for what was probably 15 minutes we finally were served water. It seemed like the only person willing to help us was the young waitress who was incredibly sweet! The man who I guessed was the owner buzzed around to all the other tables filling waters and chatting with them about the specials, but failed to ever reach ours. Then another group came in, a group of adults probably in their 40's, they were seated after us but the waitress took their order way before our table. We ordered and started drawing on the butcher paper that was laid out on the table. We had filled our ENTIRE table with drawings and still no food in sight. We must have waited for at least an hour and a half before the owner came to the table asking my friend if they could butterfly his steak to make it cook faster because if they didn't we'd be waiting another hour! My friend of course said yes slightly annoyed (we were all a bit hangry at this point and just wanted to eat and leave). I noticed the owner walk over to our waitress and mimic the conversation he had with our table and roll his eyes. Very unprofessional. When they brought our food they only brought the three salads out and said the other food would take longer. 30 more minutes passed and three of us were done but they finally brought out the steak and chicken plates so we sat there while the others ate. We were so disappointed in this place, nobody even apologized to us for the wait. It seemed very unprofessional and unpolished. The owner, although nice to older adults, treated us like we were children (we are all younger adults in our early 20's). Service was poor (although our waitress did her best!), there was NO happy hour anywhere to be found, food was alright but not as good as expected, and the owner is rude. Would not recommend.
