Very attentive staff and good food. The portions were very generous. Dinner and dessert were more than enough to fill me up. Very cool atmosphere down there as well. Regardless of what you generally like to eat, you will find something on the menu that works for you. Would eat here again on my next stop through town.

This is our 1st visit to the city of Hood River, on a Tuesday night. We found this restaurant based on yo reviews. The restaurant is in the middle of downtown and under street level. This is a small restaurant. We are the only order party in the entire restaurant. The hostess and waitress was very helpful with our order. Nice food and service.

I've been here a couple of times now, and had the same experience twice. The wait staff (lady with short hair) is very polite, friendly and attentive but in no way overbearing. CON: They don't have sparkling water (most places in HR don't) and the bread you get with dinner is mediocre at best...very best. PRO: The service is really good, the food is delicious! I haven't had any meat dishes here, so I have no idea how they might taste. But the pasta and sauces are spot on! As far as "Italian" food goes, this is the tastiest in hood river.

The pasta is simply amazing!!! A family-owned restaurant that's friendly, fast, and has very tasty food!! I tried the Linguine Carbonara and it was delicious!! The owner was working alone serving and not once was frazzled or hurried. He got our food out pretty fast and checked in on us. Super friendly and kind! Definitely recommend this place!

Great food - wife and I tried different pastas that were both pretty good. Couldn't go wrong with our deep fried pickle appetizer either. The name of the restaurant doesn't lie - a dark, cozy basement atmosphere. Pretty lonely on a Thursday night in November but that was perfect for us.

We are new to town and we've already had two recommendations for The Subterranean. We went for dinner tonight and it was heavenly! We shared a Caesar salad and a pasta special (Linguine Milanese?), with tiramisu for dessert. All were delicious! The pasta was incredibly good and I'm glad to hear it's earned a permanent spot on the menu. We can't wait to go back and try a steak. Glad to know of this fun little spot.

So if you are traveling thru Hood River on the Columbia River Gorge You must stop to eat at the Subterranean restaurant- steakhouse. Adam & I decided to share each other's choices. I went with the Salmon Dill Aoli special with side veggies. It was amazing! Adam kept raving about the piece he ate. We also got their Flat Iron steak which was very tasty. Hubby got the garlic mash. Great service. Family owned and operated.

We all got different sandwiches and every single one of us loved what we got. Wasn't too busy on a Friday morning, plenty of open seating. They did have pastries as well but did not partake. Ordered the bagel and lox which was amazing- came with all the fixings such as tomatoes, capers & red onions. The salmon was fresh and the bagel was nice and toasty, just the way I prefer. Got to taste the sandwich with the jam and loved it. Kind of wish I got that sandwich instead just cause of the jam. The bread was really good too- I think they were homemade english muffins. Everything on the sandwich was just chef's kiss! All of the employees were really nice. The place was clean as you have to "buss" your own table. Glad that people can follow directions. The drinks my group ordered came out piping hot and was served with a smile. Cool spot!

You order at the counter and they bring it out to you. The dining space is bright with tons of seating. I love that they make their own bread!! It's super soft and such a nice touch. I usually go with the turkey which has turkey, white cheddar, tomato, pickles, onion, lettuce, and hot mustard. It was a bit spicier than I would have liked, not that it was too hot, but that flavor was really dominant for me so I'd probably modify it a bit in the future or just build my own . My daughter loved her ham sandwich which comes with sprouts, avocado, and cucumber. My husband also really liked his Italian and their clam chowder. This place is definitely worth a stop if you are hungry in the Gorge!

They have plenty of outdoor seating for your little pups, though the water dish they left out was unattended to. As far as food, they had a whole plant-based menu to meet my vegan needs. More important, they were able to make a gluten-free sandwich for my partner with celiac. They took precautions to minimize cross-contact with gluten items, including wrapping the sandwich up separately and bringing it out to us first before bringing out our gluten containing items. The three in our group had mixed reviews on the food quality. I enjoyed my reuben very much. My partner and his mom thought their food was okay, and their portions were too small for the price. As far as the actual store goes, they carry a lot of what your typical natural foods store or food co-op would carry, though the prices seem more along the lines of what a Whole Foods would charge. For example, $3.50 for a single avocado. Considering that they are a small business in a somewhat touristy town, I guess that is a sound business decision. All in all, a good experience, just expect to pay a little more if you are going to shop or eat there!

Everyone else is already finishing up their drinks and meals. Wanting just one drink after a long day, I head to the bar! My wife asks me to get her one too. Here's where it gets bizarre. Kickstand has a bar...well, it looks like a bar. But what I found out is that it's just for looks because it doesn't act like a bar. I thought ordering two cocktails and paying for my drinks would be easy, like it is at every bar in town. But the bartender, I mean employee standing behind a bar, asked if I was with the large group. I stated, "yes, I was." Then she proceeded to tell me that the drinks would be on someone's tab. But I showed up late...I don't know what's happening. I don't know who's paying for the "tab". I just wanted to buy two drinks and walk away. But that wasn't allowed at Kickstand. Then another employee walks up and attempts to take my drink order. Super confused, I tell her the employee standing behind the bar just took my drink order. And then we proceeded down the tab conversation again. The second employee said because "we" were a party of 8 or more, I couldn't pay for my own drinks and I they would have to put it on the party's tab. But again, I don't know who owns the tab. If it was the woman having the birthday, I didn't want to add to her bill...on her birthday. Then they suggested I "could just Venmo" the party girl. No! I want to just order two drinks and have Kickstand take my money. Why wouldn't they just take my money?! The place was dead tonight, other than the 5 or so small daycarel families, sitting at their own tables, that made up the "party". I canceled my drink order and walked away out of protest and principal. When asked if I was with the big party, I should have said no I guess. Lesson leaned for next time, if there is a next time. Kickstand, you're so difficult and frustrating!!
