I'm quite sure this is the best vegetarian ramen I've ever had! Rich with just the right amount of heat. The eggs had a perfect jam texture and just melted in my mouth. The sake flight was also tasty and fun. My partner found the matcha ipa to be unexpectedly good. The menu could be easier to read though! Inconsistent formatting and usage of pictures. Mugen Noodle is such a great find, especially if you, like me are traveling with vegan and gluten-free peeps and don't want anyone settling for the sad "side salad option." The vegan and GF choices here were actually exciting. My friends ordered the vegan Khao Soi and the Kati noodle soups, and both were full, thoughtful dishes, not afterthoughts. It made dinner so much easier and way more enjoyable for our whole group. This isn't a traditional ramen shop, but my husband's black garlic chintan was every bit as satisfying as some of our favorite ramen spots back in the Bay. Rich, comforting, and absolutely worth ordering at $19 for a hearty bowl. (The others were slightly pricier at $24 a pop) That said, the star of the night was my spicy shrimp ramen. Easily. The broth reminded me of a laksa base with a deep, layered flavor heavy with aromatics and umami. The shrimp on top were excellent in their own right, perfectly seared, well-seasoned, and not just a garnish pretending to matter. I also want to give the ramen eggs a shout out. I can't believe how many places get this wrong. These beauties were perfectly marinated and served warm. It's one of my biggest pet peeves to have an ice cold ramen egg dropped into my hot soup and I appreciate the consideration given to addressing this common faux pas. Excellent food, excellent service! We were visiting Oregon and took a chance on Hood River restaurant options. This was SUCH a win. I'm usually not a huge fan of ramen only bc I'm not used to it but I can't stop thinking about this ramen dish. It was the perfect meal. I wish I lived closer so we could go more. The kids had fried tofu. My older son ordered buttered noodles and didn't like it but I think that's bc he doesn't really like butter at all (and idk why he ordered it haha). I think he was hoping for something soupy. The little guy ordered chicken off the kids menu and it had a little teriyaki sauce - the kids both ended up eating that and loving it. My husband ordered a pork ramen dish and was so happy w his choice. I asked them to make mine "medium" Spicy which - big mistake- it was too spicy for my weak self! I ended up asking them for like some sort of coconut broth to bring down the level of spice and they did without batting an eye and ensured that that broth was vegan as well despite my forgetting to ask them to make it vegan. The ambiance was very family-friendly and medium-loud chatty noise which is good for kids. After we finished they had tshirts and practice chopsticks and other items to purchase by the register and my husband, who loves collecting tshirts to remind him of places/events/etc as a souvenir purchased a Mugen tshirt! The kids purchased two practice chopsticks. One of the folks in the restaurant graciously asked us if we were visiting and then proceeded to give us ideas of where to visit in the city. I got the chicken broth ramen. It was unusually they must specialize in chicken broth, because I guess the pork broth can be very difficult to pull off. The pork was good it was more like a kinda barbecue but still good. Nice and savory, as well as tender. The chicken broth was good, with medium spicy via flakes. It didn't feel super rich or hearty though, and a bit flat. The Egg was ok, and they did get the typical flavor inside! TBH didn't really like the noodles. Was visiting Hood River on a cold rainy night, so when I discovered a well-reviewed ramen spot in town. It seemed like it'd hit the spot. Mugen is in a nice downtown-ish area with its own parking lot attached. The first thing I noticed was the menu, specifically its layout. It was cluttered and could use some design work. Now, when it came to the dishes, I noticed right away this is not a typical Japanese ramen joint. With so many spicy choices, items like coconut, duck, khao soi, and wine selections, I want to say it's definitely Japanese fusion with Thai influence. I had the Shoyu Chintan ($19) and it was very good. The pork came with a generous portion and my medium spice level brought the good heat in the broth. However, I want a fan of the thick Thai style egg noodles. It was good, but not what I'd like in my ramen. I also had the Karaage (crispy chicken) (without rice $14) and it was very, meh. Both dishes were a little overpriced but considering this type of meal in a small mountain town, Mugen was an enjoyable meal. read more

We came on Friday night and the place was clean and staff was quick. It wasn't too busy but still relatively crowded. My girlfriend's miso salmon was very rich and thick and flavorful and she absolutely loved it. My garlic chicken with chashu was unfortunately pretty thin and not so flavorful. It only had 1 piece of meat and half an egg in it. At least include the full egg? The meat was very delicious but after spending 20$ for this bowl I went down the street and ate 3 tacos. read more

This place was amazing. It's the perfect spot to go to get warmed up on a cold, wet, PNW night. The people who work there genuinely care about their customers having a good time and appreciating the quality of the food. The food was as good as a ramen place you would find in Japan (I have tried ramen in Japan). The flavors were strong, the appetizers and mains were great. My wife is vegan and they had some great options for her that she liked a lot. They have a kids menu and are super friendly with children, so you can feel comfortable coming here with your whole family. Be careful with their spice levels, I would wager that most people can't handle their "medium", as their "medium" is similar to "very spicy" in most other places. Although there were a number of new restaurants near the river, I was looking for a smaller local place in the downtown area of Hood River. When I found a parking spot, it was just down the hill from MUGEN noodle. My black garlic Ramen with pork was delicious, the broth so complex the restaurant is owned and run by a small family. I checked out their website. I was delighted to see that the little girls in the family photo were now the adult women serving along with their mother, while their father (who I didn't actually see) was cooking in the back. I will definitely go back next time. I'm in Hood River and buy a sweatshirt this time, they had some really cool designs. read more

A surprise fantastic stop on our weekend getaway to Hood River. We came here for dinner on a chilly night, hoping to warm up with some Ramen. We sat outside and had a little heater to ourselves to keep us warm. Everyone was so kind and helpful getting us seated right away and taking our order quickly. We started with crab rangoon and sesame balls, both tasty and warm. We had some tea as well, served in an adorable little owl mug to hold the tea bag. It was so hot outside that we didn't want to have their famous ramen, but there were so many other options. We went with the chicken katso salad (had a fancier name) and it was fresh and delicious! The chicken was crispy yet so tender inside, which isn't always the case. The chili lime dressing gave it a fantastic kick. I'm already craving it again! For an appetizer we ordered the tempura shrimp; it was crispy and delicious. There were five shrimp for $12, a bit pricy, but they were satisfying. Even at this time of the night, the place was bustling! Lots of people sitting outside, some inside and even more arriving for pick up. Families, couples, singles - everyone. Second time visit today with my whole family. Service was kind and friendly and the food was delicious. I had the Khao Soi for the second time. It's my favorite noodle dish and I'm just thrilled that there are so many versions of it in Northwest Oregon. Back in CA, there was only one place an hour away. Now I have like 5 different Khao Soi restaurants to try. Anyhoo, the one at Mugen Noodle is my current favorite. I had medium spicy and it was exactly what I was expecting. The mustard pickles were really tasty and the soft boiled egg was perfectly flavored. The noodles are perfectly chewy. Husband had the black garlic noods and eldest son had the shoyu. We also ordered the shrimp tempura appetizer and it was enough for all four of us to have a taste -well I had the salad and not the shrimp, but the salad was great too!
