Wanted to love Thai House but it's just OK. Since there are only a haMcCullough of Thai restaurants in Hood River, I had high hopes because Thai is one of my favorite cuisines, especially for takeout. While the process for ordering, and the service when I picked up my order, was friendly, offering hot sauce, chili oil and utensils for the taking, the food was definitely sub-par. Darn. Pad Kee Mao (drunken noodles) is one of my favorites and man, did I have a craving. Figured this was a safe bet since its a staple of Thai street food and served in most restaurants. I did ask for spicy, number 4 on their 5 spice scale since many Thai restaurants cater to the American palette and their spicy is Super spicy, even for me! This popular dish is made with wide rice noodles and is stir fried with Chinese broccoli and Thai basil plus carrots, scallions and cabbage. For protein I selected chicken. Well, their version had zero Chinese broccoli, Thai basil, or cabbage! The sauce was practically non existent making the dish so dry. I've never, ever had a rice noodle dish that was dry. I added water to try to make a sauce. The chicken was also dry and over cooked. And the spice was so hot, I could only eat about a third of the dish. For my Thai fix while in Hood River I'll have to stick with Lampoei's, a food truck on OR-35, that typically serves curries, Pad Thai and fried rice, not drunken noodles.

Google says OPEN, but it's CLOSED. Closed by 8:15 on a Friday night.

So mad. Google said "open", Yelp said "open". We rush down and was there 45 min before closing and it's closed??!! And on a Friday night??? Ridiculous. Luckily, every other restaurant around was open so we walked to one and had a quick meal, but this the third time to try this place and they're never open for us. Supposed to be, but aren't. We won't be trying it again.

Got the Thai house noodle today and it was phenomenal. Medium spicy no egg, the peanut sauce was delicious and made the dish. Our waitress was fast and nice. We sat outside and the weather was great but nearby construction sort of killed the vibe. Great experience nonetheless!

Drunken Noodle with Beef... over a bed of lettuce? Odd choice.

I absolutely love thai food, so I was excited to try one in the city I was visiting. I was absolutely shocked at how good the reviews are for this place and how everything was here. Either they're using fake reviews and/or paying for reviews. The food was absolutely bland as all could be. My beef in the drunken noodles was overcooked, stringy, and totally flavorless, even dusted lightly with seasoning you could hardly tell. The potstickers were very clearly frozen ones, with hardly any veg, and no seasoning. Everything here seems to be made for the palette of someone who has never actually had thai food before. Onto drinks. They had no soda available, which was written over the menu in sharpie, no change or update to what they offer officially, just scratched out and written not available. The 'hot tea' which you normally order at a thai place did not come when I ordered it. Instead what came was a cup of hot water, and a bunch of assorted tea bags, expecting me to steep my own like I'm in an elderly diner from the 90s. Their thai iced tea was primarily milk and sugar, and had a very underwhelming use of spice. The acoustics in the place was very odd, very echoing. I could hear things normally you wouldn't expect to. The one thing I will say that was good was the waitress that occasionally checked in with us.

Thai House is the only Thai restaurant in town and they abuse that fact. I ordered a Panang Curry for $15 (I asked for extra veggies and was told they'd be an additional $5!). We're locals (grew up in Hood River) and have been going here for years- the quality has continued to go down. I received a tiny (12 oz) Tupperware, not fully filled, with 7 pieces of tofu and way too overloaded with just frozen peas and carrots. I can't believe I almost spent an additional $5 to get a piece of broccoli (or maybe just extra freezer vegetables). The curry itself was mediocre at best. This was the final chance I gave to Thai House. What a disappointment.

Okish food. Tried pad Thai and yellow Curry with mild option. Go only if you are depriving if Thai food, not with great taste to find. It's close to multanah falls and on the way to Mt. Hood, so I would say location is pretty nice.

Lunch size portions at a dinner price.

The food here is very good. Unfortunately the portion sizes are getting smaller and smaller by the day but the prices are not. The lunch portion and the dinner portion seem to be the same these days. I've recently discovered they charge more for the dinner portion but there's no difference because they don't fill the containers all the way. I've been eating here for years and when they started the containers were always filled and my girlfriend I had more food than we could eat. Now I have to buy three dinners for the two of us and we finish all of them. Sucks seeing restaurants pinching pennies and still expecting high prices. Normally for the dinner portion the containers are all the way full of food. This is the lunch serving, just in a bigger container. The containers on the right contain potstickers they are the normal cheaper lunch serving. I have kids and I can't afford to feed them here anymore. By the way this meal cost $55.00. Also our soup said there would be button mushrooms and straw mushrooms. There were only 4 total button mushrooms. The cheapest mushroom you can get. Just one more example of why I'm done with Thai house. They did it to them selfs. There food was on point and they just started cutting corners. Sad.

    Panang curry

Stopped here for some Thai.. service was good, the food was definitely lacking. The spring rolls are fried store bought egg rolls. My Panang curry was nothing more than chicken with frozen peas/carrots? The pad Thai however was great, so just stick to that!

Supposedly Keng Pha-Nang (Panang Curry) with pha-nang curry sauce, kaffir leaves. Peanuts, green peas, carrots. (No peanuts or basil!)

This place is really good. I had the Larb and my friend had a mushroom noodle dish. A little weak on the service but overall good food.

The vegan and GF choices here were actually exciting. My friends ordered the vegan Khao Soi and the Kati noodle soups, and both were full, thoughtful dishes, not afterthoughts. It made dinner so much easier and way more enjoyable for our whole group. This isn't a traditional ramen shop, but my husband's black garlic chintan was every bit as satisfying as some of our favorite ramen spots back in the Bay. Rich, comforting, and absolutely worth ordering at $19 for a hearty bowl. (The others were slightly pricier at $24 a pop) That said, the star of the night was my spicy shrimp ramen. Easily. The broth reminded me of a laksa base with a deep, layered flavor heavy with aromatics and umami. The shrimp on top were excellent in their own right, perfectly seared, well-seasoned, and not just a garnish pretending to matter. I also want to give the ramen eggs a shout out. I can't believe how many places get this wrong. These beauties were perfectly marinated and served warm. It's one of my biggest pet peeves to have an ice cold ramen egg dropped into my hot soup and I appreciate the consideration given to addressing this common faux pas. Fast service, a beautiful outdoor patio with a great view, and food that genuinely impressed all of us. Highly recommend if you're in the area.

We ended up coming back the next day without hesitation for 2 days of tacos in a row and I'd return in a heartbeat if ever back in Hood River. These tacos are addictive! With their mix-and-match fusion menu, your taco of choice can really taste any way you like. The Hawaiian taco with grilled shrimp was my favorite, but I also enjoyed their Thai taco with chicken. I wish I could have tried all of them as everything featured good, fresh ingredients. Don't skip the drinks here either. I usually avoid cocktails but they offered to make their frozen margarita spicy for me and I couldn't resist -- fantastic! The service was over-the-top amazing. This is a casual restaurant where you order at the counter, seat yourself with a number, and wait for your food to be delivered. Service at such establishments is usually pretty perfunctory, but not at Love & Hominy. The servers are all super friendly and seem genuinely enthusiastic to be working in their restaurant. That in itself says a lot. As mentioned, this place is casual but still fun and eclectic. While eating your tacos in-house, check out the wall on the entrance side. It's pretty entertaining to look at.

Love & Hominy is a rather small restaurant in downtown Hood River, seating only perhaps 25 people…read morein a mixture of tables and countertop seating. It's a brisk business, so while ordering is counter service style, the tables turnover quickly. When we visited at 12:30 on a Sunday afternoon, there was a small line ahead of us to order, but only around 5 minutes or so after we ordered, several tables cleared out and we were able to sit down. The food took about 15 minutes to arrive. Combo, Vietnamese w/ Pork, Mediterranean w/ Chicken, Salsa ($15.50) - The chips, half moon shaped, seem to be fried in house, being really thick, great for dipping with no breakage, and perfectly crunchy. They have somewhat of an oily sheen on the surface, but aren't overly greasy at all. They aren't salted too heavily and instead seem to be slightly sweetened. The salsa included in this meal is refreshingly tangy and creamy. It's completely mild, though, with no hint of heat whatsoever. The chips easily dip in without getting soggy. The tacos all seem to use the same base - a fried corn tortilla heavily seasoned with a doritos locos-esque spice mixture, then filled with tender basmati rice. I believe they store a bunch of tortillas filled with rice sitting in trays, which can then be grabbed off the shelf to customize to order. That would explain why the shells get completely soggy and why the sauces are all applied on top of the rice rather than below. They are also wrapped in aluminum foil, which allows the rice to basically steam inside the taco shell, creating more sogginess. Overall a disappointing base. The Vietnamese combines fish sauce and banh mi pickles, combined with sweet creamy kewpie mayo drizzled over the rice and thinly sliced cucumbers as a second wall complementing the taco shell. The pickles and cucumber are crunchier than the shell. There are jalapenos but there's no heat at all. The pork is shredded and tender with a somewhat smoky quality, but there's not much included at all, perhaps only a tablespoon or two of meat. It's mostly vestigial against the massive amount of pickles on the top. I'd say the flavors are somewhat similar to a vegetarian banh mi. It's definitely missing in the meat department. There are so many veggies piled onto this taco that things fall out left and right while eating. The Mediterranean includes acidic pickled onions, a slaw lightly dressed in vinaigrette, thinly sliced cucumbers, a bunch of salty feta, and shredded mint leaves. There's some tzatziki drizzle, but not enough to make a huge impact. The chicken is shredded very finely and again not given in enough of a quantity to really do much for the taco. I feel like the chicken is precooked white meat, similar to the chicken in those packaged salads. Combo, Thai w/ Chicken, Tex Mex w/ Shrimp, Queso ($15.50) - The queso is served warm. It's thick and cheesy, tasting like pretty standard queso with again no heat whatsoever despite tiny flecks of red. The Thai includes a red bell pepper, cabbage, and edamame (why edamame?) slaw, lightly dressed in a peanutty and sweet vinegar. On top of the rice is a thicker peanut and ginger drizzle, enough to give some freshness and boost the umami. The overall flavor profile does remind me of an Americanized Pad Thai with mostly sweetness and nuttiness and no tamarind fruity tang. The Tex Mex is interesting. They actually char the corn quite well, so it's sweet and smoky in flavor. They add the same queso as the dip for the chips, then cilantro and then soy bacon crumbles, which I found to be disturbing in texture, almost like crunchy egg shells. They do include three or four pieces of sweet shrimp which aren't overcooked. The seasoning on the taco shells doesn't work for me. The flavors clash with the unique ingredients used in the creative tacos. In addition, I'm so confused why they use the same rice base. I guess it's a cost cutting measure? They add a ton to every taco and it spills out all over the place. They could easily amp up the unique qualities of each taco. For example, cilantro rice for the Tex Mex, Jasmine rice for the Thai, vermicelli for the Vietnamese. It's okay to use rice, but it's just such a boring and uninspired base when they are trying to be so creative with the flavors. It feels like filler used to cheapen up the tacos. I have similar feelings towards the meat. It's the same for every taco, no uniqueness in flavor or texture. The only thing different are the toppings and the slight bit of sauce on top. Just think - for the Vietnamese, sweet lemongrass grilled pork, for the Tex-Mex, lime chile grilled shrimp, etc. Then again there's so little meat included in the first place. Overall I left a little disappointed. It seems to be targeted towards people who want fusion food without straying too far away from Americanized roots. It's just not for me. They have a small and cozy dining hall that was full. I had all ready had an idea of what I would order but quickly looked at the menu just in case I wanted to take additional item home. I ordered papaya salad, pad see ew, and tom ka soup. I also got a thai tea to go. I might have waited 15-20 minutes for my order. There were also several call in orders that people came in to pick up. I am surprised at the speed they produced the food. The bench seat had a small view of the kitchen. I believe this is a very efficient full fledged family restaurant. Everyone was friendly and nice. The way they packaged the food was thoughtful. I had a 20 minute drive back home. It stayed warm /hot and no leakage even with the soup. Now the food: Papaya salad was delicious. Great flavor. My only issue is it was marked on the menu as spicy. *Morgan Freeman voice* -it was not in fact spicy. It was completely spice free. I know that SE asians are sweet to profile us pale people as no heat, but I was really looking forward to spice.... So for next time I will request heat added as I am a non-practicing alabaster person. To be fair, every fair complexion person with a togo order clarified that their food was "non spicy." I can't call them out for playing it safe. Yes queens. Pad see ew: shrimp was my protein. It was delicious. Regular broccoli was used. Chinese broc might be out of season. I don't care. It was great. Will eat again FR. Tom ka soup: the gem of this story. They made it without onions, be praised, as I have a horrible allergy and most of my one star food reviews are about food safety in relationship to ignoring food allergies. This was fresh, flavorful, bright. Great protein to both ratio. Probably one of the best versions I have ever had. Will be ordering again. Probably regularly. Thai tea: was great. Ice, tea, milk ratio good. I like less ice in my drinks... she somehow knew this. Now I know if I want Thai I have a place to call Thai Home (see what I did there), that I won't have to drive twice the distance to Portland to get fantastic Thai food. Honestly, I think this is way better than most of the thai restaurants in the greater portland area. Thank you for a wonderful dinner and subsequent left overs! 10/10.
