Love Roma. They have great consistency and prices. The staff is friendly and helpful. Pizza a bit pricey but their sandwiches made from their premade section cannot be beat. The food was amazing, the waitstaff (Jonathan & water guy) were friendly and attentive. My friend and I didn't know if we were moving to speedily for them, or they were taking their time, either way the food was amazing. When we were greeted by the host, he asked if we had a reservation, um... the place is empty (2 other tables) we thought, but he was able to seat us after a few seconds of comical reactions to us wanting to be seated. The actual restaurant could add a bit more decor for authenticity sake, but we were there about 600pm and not sure what the nighttime atmosphere might lend to it. The restrooms seemed to have seen every venue in this locations as they could use some immediate reno. We were super excited when we got the food and it really turned our minds around on this place. I had the Pappardelle al Ragu Napoletano, and my friend had the, Salmone Alla Griglia... we both reported immediately that it was amazing. I am not a fan of Salmon so I didn't try.. .but my friend tried mine and even she was surprised not being a heavy fan of Italian. The pasta in mine was made in house, and done just right... my friend salmon was cooked to perfection. We would definitely recommend to others. read more

Stopped in last night (10/15/2011) to order a pizza to go. Decided to stay and eat. Our waiter Mark was great. Suggested we have the pizza as an appetizer so we can try some of their main courses. What great advice! First off, the service was very attentive, friendly and made us feel like home. The bread basket included wine biscuits that were so good we took some to go (all baked there). The pizza was topped with ricotta cheese and spinach. Delicious. Thin crispy crust. Sweet sauce. My wife had baked eggplant. Not doughy and fried but light and creamy so you could really taste the eggplant. I had a pasta dish with pancetta. Smokey flavor. Also delicious. Portions were large enough for us to take food home and eat today. We ended with tiramasue and the cannoli that first brought us into the place. We loved it there. The service and food was great. I've been there twice. Reading above reviews not sure why they treat Groupon holders as second class citizens ??? The first time I sat by the windows and everything was very nice, everything went well, the food was good and Alma our waitress was excellent. The second time I sat in the back room and I spent the entire night blowing & waving fruit flies away from the bread basket, our bread plates, the top of our wine, I had to send my water back because one fruit fly decided to drown in my water glass. The waiter was apologetic but did nothing to help the situation, IE: move to a different table ( which were many ), heck a free Cannoli might have been nice but to spend 90 minutes to two hours blowing & waving 3 or 4 fruit flies is totally unhealthful and if you know anything about fruit flies, they multiply exponentially. I didn't see anyone else going through the motions so stay the heck out of the back corner !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Had to send the fish back, asked for it well done and it wasn't. Had a wonderful dinner there! The veal parm, Spaghetti a Vongole, antipasto, calamari and Fettuccine Bolognese were fresh and delicious. Tomato sauce had a 'light hand' and was well-balanced. The staff was wonderful- always checking patron needs. Restaurant filled up with happy people- yet it was NOT noisy. No screaming to be heard. It would be nice to see the restaurant a bit updated. Every time I'm home sick for the motherland I come here and I feel like I'm back in Italy in the streets of Rome.

I had Easter dinner here with my family and it was terrible. When we walked in and gave our name for our 3pm seating they rushed us to our table and once we sat down the servers threw our salads down in front of us. We were rushed through our entire meal. When we ordered a bottle of wine the waitress said they only had large bottles for $40. When I asked how much a glass was she said $5.50. We're not big drinkers so we stuck with glasses. When we got our bill it ended up being $7 a glass. The meat in the antipasti was ok but the greens were not very fresh. The pasta course was fine. The meat course was awful! The advertisement for Easter dinner said family style, it was not. We each got a plate with a slice of lamb, chicken Marsala, ham and green beans. The lamb was over cooked and rubbery, the green beans were over cooked and mushy. The ham was nothing special and the chicken was dry. The dessert plate had biscotti and assorted cream pastries all of which were stale. The servers also forgot to pour us coffee. The cost for this bad meal? $30 per person not including wine. This meal was so bad it was laughable. What made me laugh even more was the restroom. When I washed my hands in the restroom I heard a funny noise, turned out there was a big hole in the pipe and they had a bucket under the sink to catch the water. Needless to say my whole family was disappointed that we didn't have a nice holiday meal together and paid way too much for it. read more

After reading the various reviews, I was hesitant to use my Groupon for this restaurant. I was pleased with my experience. We were seated exactly at the time we requested, our Groupon was accepted without question, the service was efficient and friendly, and the food was excellent. First time going to Roma on a Saturday night for dinner. I've heard great things. We were greeted in a professional manner by the host and offered a window view table. It was surprisingly slow for a Saturday night with only 3 parties eating. We waited a few minutes while the bus boy cleared our table then were seated. Immediately I noticed the white table cloth was very badly stained. I figured I wouldn't be "that guy" and just let it go....The unenthusiastic bus boy came back and poured our water out of a pitcher with no ice...strange. Our waiter was young and seemed new but was very friendly. We ordered mussels for an appetizer. Amazing. I wanted to also get a bottle of wine...their wine list is "under construction" so they only had a few choices and were uncertain on prices....Very bad move. An Italian restaurant on the hill not having a good selection of wine? Also had to mention to the server my wine glass had lipstick on it. The food was great. I got the chicken Marsala. My girlfriend got lobster ravioli. Would definitely come back for the food. But the lack of attention to cleanliness and awkward service is an issue. Would recommend they find a manager to oversee the waitstaff until everyone is more experienced. read more

We made reservations and told the restaurant we were bringing an infant. We were seated with bread immediately and things went downhill from there. We waited for 25 minutes for a server and had to ask twice for someone to please come over. The waitstaff seemed very unorganized and frenzied. People arriving after us were receiving food. It took another 15 minutes for the milk to come for our baby, who by that time was hungry and crazed. We ordered a salad as an appetizer and pasta for dinner. We arrived at 7pm, at 8:20 we still did not have food and had to request our food to be packed up so that we could take it with us because the baby had reached his threshold. We expected to be in and out in 45-50 minutes for pasta. The food was good, but the service is horrendous. This place needs a manager to manage the waitstaff and become more organized. read more

Very disappointed! I frequent the deli part many times, but today was the first time we tried the ristorante although we were seated quickly( reservations for 7 pm for 2) , it took a while for a waiter to take our order. We had the pre fix dinner . It took almost 45 minutes to get an Insalata and a calamari. We complained . (My husband actually asked if they had gone fishing for his appetizer). The appetizers were fine. The main course, which was ordered along with desert at the beginning of the meal, was a different story. I asked the waiter how was the Vitello Milanese prepared. He told me breaded and baked with asparagus and mashed potatoes. It came breaded , but with arugula salad on top and 3 large French fried cut pieces of potato. Although my husband liked his spaghetti with shrimp, he found it to be too spicy to enjoy all the flavor of the shrimp and it's sauce. The desert was even worse. On the pre fix menu it states cannoli, tiramisu or limoncello mascarpone cake, none available! So we were told that there was a chocolate mousse and raspberry lemon cake. Ok. When it came, it was chocolate mousse cake and the raspberry lemon cake was more like a cheesecake. Our first time dining and very disappointed. Service terrible. We asked for the bill and it took almost half hour to get it! Not good experience and staff needs to be educated as to what items on menu are all about! We fave the waiter the bill with a gift certificate we had been given by friends of ours. It took another half hour to get the bill back. The waiter tells me that it took so long to get the bill because he was trying to rub the gift certificate and it wouldn't go through because it was for the deli!!!! Are you kidding me???? Nowhere does it say on that certificate that it is to be used on the deli only!!! Certainly our friends didn't intended it to be that way( I called them). So, when you purchase a gift certificate, you must tell the purchaser that it is for the deli (and mark the card as such) or it is for the restaurant! And mark it as such!!! I gave it one star for my husband's scampi. It was just ok. Never again!!! Terrible experience!!!! . read more

Went to have dinner here, sat at the bar, were promptly greeted by the bartender who offered us a drink and gave us some menus.......and then disappeared for a good 10 minutes into the other side of the restaurant/market. We were about 10 seconds from walking out due to the awful service when he came back. I proceeded to tell him that we were about to walk out and then he left AGAIN and told us that he would be right back to take our order. This is where we went wrong, we should have just walked out right then and there. He came back to take our order and was completely unapologetic. We order an appetizer that came with shrimp and calamari, a salad, and a vegetarian pizza. The app came out and we realize that there was no shrimp on the plate, for $16 I expect some shrimp, that is absurd for a plate of calamari at a "cheap" Italian place. We finally noticed that the shrimp were missing and asked the waiter about it, he said that the kitchen probably ran out and just put on some extra calamari instead. I'm sorry but that is something that should have been communicated to us, for example, I'm sorry the kitchen is out of shrimp, would you like something else? or we could just give you some extra calamari? The service was TERRIBLE from the kitchen to the people behind the bar. Our waiter was unapologetic and unavailable. My wife and I went for dinner on 11/24/12. We went to college in Providence and have frequented many restaurants on Federal Hill over the years. We went to Trattoria Roma on a whim when we could not get reservations elsewhere. What a great surprise! The restaurant is unassuming as it is attached to an Italian food market - the ambience in the dining room was very nice despite this, however. The bread basket included different types of bread and an Italian cookie type app which was very good. Service was perfect. My wife and I both had the Sole Francaise served over spinach which was very fresh and delicious! It had a nice flavor with chopped garlic and sweet flavors. It was very reasonably priced at $16.95 as well. Overall an excellent dining experience on Federal Hill - we will definitely be returning! read more

Looks like the owner is putting the cart in front of the horse. They are offering groupons to fund their construction project. The food was very good and reasonable in portions. The reason for the two stars is the total lack of service and the fact not even following the groupon fine print. Our waitress "Page" not sure on the spelling, was the only person other than the bus boy who looked like they knew what they were doing. It was her first day there with zero training and assistance. The people around us who didn't have her we just plain out felt bad for. One couple sat in front of their meals looking for something, either pepper or cheese or something. They looked at their plates getting cold and just decided to dig in after 10 minutes. The bus boy wrapped up their dinners and the waiter came over then quickly left to see what the hold up was on their food. They had already eaten with no post-meal service and are waiting for takeout containers and a check before the waiter even came over! We are talking 30 minutes after the food was dropped off! Our waitress explained that half the entrees were not good with the groupon. No where in the groupon does it say limited menu options. We had to ask twice because we and they were confused on what we could order. We already had made up our mind with the online menu, which also has different prices than in house. No specials offered or being new, she did not offer them. Every person had a groupon, forcing you to high margin food, no training, no light to the bathroom hall, construction sheets with track lights highlighting them, AKA complete siht show. If the food was not as good as it was I would have 0 or 1 star. It will probably be a great place down the road because of the food. Oh, and did I mention forced 20% gratuity. I think this is the only was their staff can make money with service that poor... Going to ask groupon for a refund on my second one and or an extension on the date for them to have time to get it together. Great food & very bad way to change a business venture. Also, after looking at their sight, the waiter that ignored the patrons, looks like the an owner DOMENIC IERFINO on their sight. We came from cape cod, ma looking for some really great Italian food. .... disappointed to say the least. Chicken Parmesan was fresh and juicy, was sort of ruined by the generic taste of tomato sauce, salad had old lettuce which they tried to mask with balsamic dressing, lasagna. ...huh sort of soupy. My wife's entrée was not what she ordered but was replaced with the correct entrée within 5 minutes. In addition, our two drinks were at no cost because of this oversight. We went here for Christmas eve dinner. I don't eat fish, so I did not get the fish dinner. I ordered chicken parm instead. It was disgusting. The chicken was old and dry chicken tenders that were about 2 1/2 inches thick. I saw them going to the next table when I arrived and asked if I could have mine pounced down before they were cooked and the waitress told me it couldn't be done because they were already cooked... I assumed she meant they were breaded but after receiving them, I have no doubt these were left overs from another dinner service and and they were microwaved. I figured I would just eat the ziti and be OK, but there were only about 15 ziti on the plate. When I left Al but 1 bite of chicken on my plate,, I expected the waitress to ask me if anything was wrong but she merely picked up my plate as if it was normal to see the chicken almost untouched. When she asked me if I wanted to take it home, I emphatically said no, hoping she would take the hint... She didn't. I have a feeling I was not the only person to send back a full plate of chicken that night. The ziti was good but not the portion was so small that it did not help the meal. read more

I used Roma to cater lunch for about 60 people 3 days last week. Day One: I ordered chicken parmesan, eggplant parmesan, penne with marinara and grilled vegetables. More than a few people commented that the eggplant was some of the best they had ever tasted. Personally, I find their sauce to be excellent. The chicken parm was made with chicken tenders instead of breasts, which was fine, but there were plenty of those tendons that run through the tender. (Not a deal breaker, but part of what keeps me from giving 5 stars here.) The grilled vegetables were out of this world - perfectly cooked, and a beautiful variety that included zucchini, summer squash, red and green peppers and asparagus. The large catering pans are advertised to serve 24 people. I found this would probably be true if that were the only item people were being served. Because I was offering 2 entrees, pasta, and vegetables (pus I made my own salad and bread), the pans were really enough for about 35 people, so I WAY over ordered. And that made a very fair price turn into a very impressively low price. Day Two: Roasted pork loin, roasted vegetables, rice pilaf and asparagus frittatas is what I ordered. The girl who took my order wrote the correct date on my order, but put the wrong day of the week down for pick up, so when I showed up for it, it wasn't prepared. Luckily, I stopped in early, and we came up with an alternate plan: roasted pork loin, sauteed vegetables, rice pilaf and vegetable calzones. I was most impressed with their ability to make such a huge amount of food so quickly and so well. The pork was perfectly cooked, flavorful and moist. The sauteed vegetables were pretty basic, as was the rice, and while the calzones were quite tasty, I ran out of them before half the people had gone through the buffet, so I was a little disappointed in their ability to determine the proper portion of calzones to replace the number of frittatas I had originally ordered. But, no biggie. No one went hungry on this day. Day Three: Meat lasagne, spinach lasagne, sauteed green beans, garlic bread and salad. Not sure how things changed so much on this day... I ordered meat lasagne for 48, spinach lasagne for 36, beans for 36, bread and salad for 60. The bread ran out before half the people were through the buffet and the salad was gone with about 5 people left in line. After lunch was over, the only thing left was a few servings of beans. (So, perhaps the large pans of lasagne feed about 20, while the large pan of eggplant parm feeds like 30?) I paid a little over 1000 dollars for all of the above food, which made my per person lunch expense to be under 6 bucks. That is phenomenal. The quality of the food far exceeds what I would normally expect for such a low price. These three meals have been my only experience with Roma, but based on these experiences, I would definitely recommend anyone give their food a try. I am looking forward to trying them out for a quiet dinner. read more

I had a Groupon so I called to make a reservation Friday afternoon and got a 8PM reservation. We arrived right around 8PM and were seated by 8:05. Asked waitress if I needed to do anything special with the Groupon and she said no, other than you can't order from the Prix Fixe menu which I already knew. Calamari was very good and came out very quick, around 8:15. Soon after we were done our entrees came out and they were both very good (eggplant parm and veal parm). Got a cannoli for dessert while the check was being finalized and were out of there by about 9:15PM so everything was well-paced unlike many of the other reviews I've read. I'd probably go back again because the food was good and the prices are reasonable. read more

First off, my husband and I tried ordering drinks-none of the beers my husband usually drinks (which are not out of the ordinary) were available. I then ordered a martini, waitress comes back to inform me that they can't make it, the liquor is not in stock, they are renovating the bar, yada yada yada. I ordered a different drink. We then try to order dinner, which was a 3-ring circus. NONE of the entrees we wanted were avaialble-not the prime rib, not the filet mignon, not the pork tenderloin or the lamb. Um, hello? They said it was because of the renovations again. What do renovations have to do with meat not being available? Is your refrigerator broken?!?! So I guess if you just want ziti, you're in luck!!! I didn't even dare order dessert. Oy. How frustrating. I didn't want a heavy pasta dish, but I ended up ordering Bolognese, per the server's suggestion. And I love a good bolognese. eehhh, Not that great. Bogged down with melted mozzarella, probably to mask the lack of taste in the meat sauce, but whatever. I took half of it home, I'm not even sure I will feed it to my dog. My husband just ended up ordering the Saltimbocca, and he just ordered that out of frustration that nothing else was available. Also, it annoys me that on their website there are a million mis-spelled items. Not all that professional. I should have known something right there and then I guess! This has been our go-to place for Italian food ever since it opened. I must admit I'm at a bit of a loss to understand some of the more negative reviews. The food here is PHENOMENAL--we always bring our guests from out of town here when we want to treat them to a great dinner. We have never been disappointed. Their marinara is out of this world, and if you don't try the eggplant you're cheating yourself. Our servers have always been excellent and the kitchen has always accommodated any special requests. Don't leave without taking home some of their almond biscotti--the best I've ever had, I don't even bother trying others. A friend of mine from California just flew back with two pounds of these treats in her luggage. :D read more

Upon making reservations I was asked if I had a Groupon (I did). When we arrived we were asked again. The waitress began to explain, in a loud voice (I think it was natural to her) the restrictions. We pointed out there was no such restriction indicated on the Groupon or web site. She explained it was for people to try the place; blah blah blah. I wanted the "prime Ribeye" and asked what was needed to make it happen. She went to talk to the owner, came back and said they expected us to spend more than the $40. Normally we spend as much or more than $100 over a Groupon. She had no way of knowing that. I had made my choice prior to arrival and ended up getting it. The whole conversation about the restrictions was very demeaning. My companion and I were on the verge of walking out until I was able to order my choice. After placing our order we looked at each other in stunned silence as we digested what had taken place. Neither of us has ever been so publicly restricted in such a way with a Groupon. While dining, the waitress came over during the appetizer (calamari) to ask how it was. We lied. It was nothing special but we let it go. Our entrees were just as bad. My steak was tough and the bottom of the mac and cheese was a loose concoction of oil and mozzarella water or something watery and white. The meatballs were a mass of mushy meat mixture and unable to hold the shape expected of a meatball. After our meal, most of which we didn't eat but packed up anyway, our plates were picked up by a guy who asked how we enjoyed our dinner. Our comments were pretty much the same as written here whereupon he walked away saying "I'm glad you enjoyed your dinner." He heard our comments but offered the sarcastic remark. We both got the impression there were no seasoned wait staff here and they were unable or unwilling to deal with any issues. We were polite and honest in our assessment of the food and our surprise, not only at the dismissal of our comments but with the sarcasm of a staff member, left us with an impression of an ill equipped waitstaff.. The staff seemed inexperienced and without skills beyond dropping the food off and pretty much unable to go beyond "How is the food." The high gratuity you award yourselves is probably the only way to ensure a large tip. Trattoria Roma: We tried it and will never return. There are far better places on the hill for food and service. Part of service is responding to valid concerns. Next time we get an unexpected restriction as we did with you, we will walk out of the establishment and blow off the cost of the Groupon which is better than subjecting ourselves to an experience such as we had with you. Don't ask the question if you can't deal with an honest answer. Although no one asked, the gelato was delicious but then again, you didn't make it. read more
