Since this place is in my neighborhood I have been wanting to try it, especially with the pics of the hand breaded Chicken Parmesan & the grilled steak looked so amazing. I was hungry for homemade Italian Meatballs without having to drive into town. The young lady who seated us was pleasant & up beat, after sitting we we're excited to get our meal going , a little nervous bcz there were only a few other diners in the whole restaurant, both inside & out & we were there at peak dinner time.
We were also hungry for fresh fried mozzarella so that's the 1st thing we ordered and then we ordered the meatballs as appetizers. Imagine our surprise when the fresh mozzarella came out and it was round, sticks of store bought frozen mozzarella sticks..lol. We just looked at each other and agreed that we would wait on our meatballs to come out before making a decision to order anything additional. The 1st bite of the mozzarella, the whole stick came out of the coating, we were disappointed but we still had fresh, homemade meatballs coming so we were still excited. Then our server brings us the most AMAZING homemade dinner rolls with Parmesan on top and I quickly asked for some olive oil. As soon as she brought it, I seasoned the oil with red pepper flakes, fresh ground black pepper, sea salt & Grated Parmesan that was readily at the table, we dipped our Rolls in this and NIRVANA baby!! DELISH!! The rolls had the most perfect crust on the bottom while being soft throughout the rest of the roll. We could have just feasted on these but we still had meatballs coming & still needed to order our entrees.
The meatballs came out & we were both so shocked again, all we could do was stare at them for about 15 seconds. We both sat there staring at those 5 little "fresh homemade meatballs" that by visually looking were neither fresh, nor homemade. :(I commented that these look just like HEB Brand frozen meatballs, When I used my fork & cut into them, that's exactly what they were!
I like HEB Frozen Meatballs when at home and in a pinch, I can deal with them, but not in an Italian mid-scale restaurant. Meatballs are just so easy to make and I could hear Chef Ramsey in my head going off about restaurants that were struggling to stay open but yet their owners continued to buy frozen food. The marinara sauce that came with it literally was from a can of sliced whole tomatoes that was only seasoned & not cooked down but the flavor was not bad. It's like in that moment, everything began to snap, how slow they were, the only people who were there seemed to be drinking a lot of wine only, and everyone kept asking for more bread..lol
I can't speak to any of their other dishes here because we only ordered staples, fried mozzarella @ meatballs. If you're in the mood for fresh rolls & wine, definitely the place to come & visit, anything else, we cannot speak to but we quickly left all of food there, paid for the ticket & left to go get something else to eat with extreme disappointment. The server admitted that the meatballs were frozen & I didn't really want to continue talking about it because I was getting frustrated Bcz I had been looking forward to trying this place, especially with the fact that just 7 minutes from this place is actually fresh, amazing homemade Italian Fare. read more
