I visited Riverbend Roastery for the first time yesterday. I had been excited as I was visiting Richmond and had seen a very queer welcoming space. The ambiance was welcoming and the establishment was beautiful. Where things took a turn, the barista at the register kept snorting as she was trying to clear her throat and probably had a running nose. After ordering, the baristas behind the counter had prepared a drink that was completely different than one I had ordered. Once the drink I had ordered was prepared, I grabbed the cup and turned to walk. A barista came from behind me, reached around grabbed the cup out of my hand and said "that's not yours". I was startled and shocked. I walked to the counter where they were insisting that the other drink was mine, to which I shared it was not. They said "well then what did you order", and spoke back and forth on how such a mix up could happen. I've never been treated in such a way, or had an established snatch anything straight from my hand. read more

I looooove Riverbend! They have the best employees! They are so friendly and work very efficiently. You should go before 9a and after 11ish on the weekends bc there will be a line out door! My favorite drinks are the church hill drip and the apple spiced chai latte! They have gluten free goodies which are pretty good. My husband loves the all star breakfast sandwich :) I honestly think I love this place bc of the inclusivity and can really feel that when I am there. read more

Not factoring this into the review as this was not my personal experience: I've heard that they don't serve people who pull up in pickup trucks and teslas...if this is true, I would recommend not making assumptions about people's politics based on the car they drive. read more

My love language is finding local coffee shops when I'm out of town. I stumbled across this gem in Richmond and the coffee was so pure and rich! The had a vintage coffee grinder as soon as you walk in and it matched the aesthetic of the shop. It gave history and added a personal touch to the owner's story. Really cute spot with a warm and inviting feel. There's a decent amount of seating inside and as well as some outside. The employees were very friendly and I liked how many options they had on the drinks menu. I got an iced pistachio matcha with oat milk and an egg & cheese bagel with pepperjack, cream cheese, and tomato. Both the drink and sandwich were mediocre. The matcha had very very little of the pistachio flavor. The bagel was untoasted, so it was room temp - the cheese was not melted, cream cheese only on one side of the bagel, the egg patty tasted watery, and the bagel tasted like a grocery store bagel. None of it was bad per se but not necessarily good either. I had been torn between getting a pistachio latte or the pistachio matcha and the staff recommended the matcha - so who knows, maybe if I come back I'll try the latte next time! read more

Super cozy cafe with outdoor seating. Even with a long line, the wait time was manageable. Amazing prices - my iced matcha latte was $4.50, with iced drinks in bigger cups to account for ice. Great taste at a wonderful cost. (specialty milks are an upcharge). During their busy hours, you might have trouble finding a seat. read more

Riverbend Coffee Company is a neighborhood shop in historic Church Hill surrounded by top restaurants and cafes. One block away is a top-rated pizzeria (8 1/2 Church Hill) and two blocks away are pies (Proper Pie Company). During the pandemic, Riverbend Coffee Company is doing takeout only. Masked, you can enter inside to order. You'll notice a large space with the tables pushed to the side. Bathrooms are still open for customers. The menu is large, but I went for the standard latte. It was well made and there's sugar products just off the bar. No simple syrup, but they have cane sugar. I also ordered the chocolate chip croissant and wow. It was HUGE and had the perfect ratio of chocolate chips to dough. It also was the perfect texture and not dry. read more

So happy to finally try this place out!! I love how it has coffee and food options for everyone! I like coffee but I can't take too much caffeine so I always look for specialty/mixed coffee drinks. Their Canela Latte was super delicious!! It was a cinnamon spanish latte with sweetened condensed milk. I liked how it was on the sweeter and creamier side but did not overpower the coffee flavors. Only had sips of the apple spice chai latte but I could tell that the spices were on point! They have lots of milk options which I appreciated. I also noticed that they carry many different types of roast/beans - perf for those who like their coffee a certain way. Their spinach feta quiche was pretty solid! The eggs were fluffy and the quiche crust was buttery and flaky. The spinach to egg ratio was also appropriate. Only wished that it was seasoned a little bit more, but nothing a dash of salt/pepper can't fix. Although they have limited indoor seating, the decor/vibes were very cute with the high wooden tables/chairs and plants everywhere. They also have some light blue accented tables outside. The lines get pretty long but coffee and food came out pretty quickly. I would definitely come back to try out their other lattes and snacks!! read more

Today was my first visit to Riverbend Roaster. The atmosphere is great, but what started as a great experience ended with me leaving early and disgusted. One of the male employees yelled at an older lady who made the mistake of walking behind the bar slightly. There was a line out the door, and they were busy, but it doesn't at all excuse the mean-spirited way he spoke to her. She was visibly embarrassed and it was completely unnecessary. I've heard great things about this coffee shop and my experience only supported what everyone else had told me! I tried their pumpkin drip and Churchill drip. Both were great with the Churchill coffee being my favorite. Indoor seating is more conductive to party's of 1-2 people but you can push tables together to accommodate more. Riverbend has a great selection of sandwiches, more than most coffee shops. I will gladly be back!! read more

I love exploring coffee shops, and have tried quite a few in the area, but this place is the one I always gravitate towards and recommend to everyone. Also the prices are great here! I'm from Los Angeles, and used to paying at least $5 for coffee, esp with non-dairy milk, but you can get an iced coffee here for about ~$3, and they don't charge extra for oat-milk!! I struggled on whether or not to give this place 5 stars. I almost went with 4 stars because the cortado I ordered wasn't very good. But then I remembered that it wasn't on the menu and the barista, who was friendly and welcoming, offerred to make it. I should have just ordered a cappuccino when I saw the cortado was not on the menu. I went with 5 starts because putting the cortado aside the shop was lovely. The moment my husband and I walked in we could smell something delicious. We weren't sure if roasting had just occurred or if the pastures were setting off our senses. My husband ordered an Almond Joy Latte, which was a shock because he rarely drink coffee. He said that the latte was delicious. The shop is located on the corner of a residential neighborhood. It was clean and there was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Folks were mingling outside and others were studying or reading inside. I would definitely recommend this place and will likely return. read more

I've been coming to Riverbend since I moved here in 2020. I am such a big fan of this coffee shop. Their coffee alone is unmatched! I always pick up coffee beans from here for my own espresso machine, I've tried other shop's beans and none has ever topped Riverbend's. Their signature drinks are also so delicious, their flavors are on point, but so is the quality of the coffee in the drink! I've tried their muffins and their breakfast bagel sandwiches and love them! It's cooked right in front of you! The service is always so great, whether you're a first timer or a regular. I'm unsure when, but Riverbend did a complete makeover of the shop and it's so inviting and so relaxing. People often come to enjoy coffee and study. read more

Coffee shop in the heart of church hill. Theres indoor and outdoor seating. Both are pretty limited and there's usually people working/studying inside. Their specialty drink are flavorful and more affordable than the surrounding coffee shops but they don't offer seasonal drinks. We used to go frequently but got tired of the same drinks on the menu. The lox is my favorite breakfast sandwich. Service is usually fast paced depend on how busy it is that day. Usually we wait like 10ish minutes for our food/drinks. read more

Service: It seemed standard service at a coffeeshop. You ordered at the counter, and they'll call your drink order when it's ready. There were at least 4 people behind the counter, so it seemed very well staffed. Food: We didn't get any food there, but had the Juniper Citrus Latte. I personally don't drink coffee much, so I couldn't compare, but my dining partner commented that he got no hints of citrus. Rather, it tasted like any other coffee. They have otherwise interesting flavors, so it might be worth trying one of the others. Ambiance: It seems they roast their own in house, because they have a large machine constantly working away at a window near the entrance. It does add to quite a lot of noise, so it could be difficult making conversation. Otherwise, this place has great lighting and definitely a take-your-time atmosphere. Value: It seems to fit the coffeeshop vibe, albeit a bit louder than others, but that might add to its authentic feel for you. As one who doesn't frequent coffee shops myself, I would prefer others. read more

I walked in here this afternoon while I was in the neighborhood and in need of some caffeine. The ambiance here is on point. This seems like it would be a great place to set and work if I was lucky enough to score a seat! The specialty beverage menu had a lot of delicious sounding things - I chose the almond joy latte (with oat milk) and it was the perfect amount of sweetness and joy. Nobody greeted me or the people behind me and we ended up just kind of wandering around for a few minutes before anyone came over to take an order. I felt a little bit like an outsider-- there wasn't any coziness or warmth in the customer service experience to match the ambiance that was set. All in all, I'd come back again for a beverage and some solitude. read more

My coffee was meh.... Not hot enough and weak. I had the Canela Spanish Latte. The Chai was just chai syrup. Not even a tea bag. My mother didn't even know she was drinking hot chocolate it was so bland. The girl making it said, "yeah, I can make hot chocolate" as if it was a first. My husband loved his Americano. I so badly want to give this place five stars. Everyone who works there is lovely and the cold brew is delicious. My qualm is the smell...I'm not sure why but it smells like burnt popcorn inside. And that wouldn't be such a big deal but I also left smelling like burnt popcorn and had to was my clothes/hair to get it out. I came here because my friend hyped it up a ton and let me tell you it live up to the hype. First the staff was friendly but not in a fakey way. The coffee is SUPER reasonably priced, like more in the price range of wawa than other local shops. The coffee itself was really good too. I got an iced coffee with oat milk & lavender syrup. They didn't skip out on the syrup so it actually tasted like lavender and literally made me smile. Also they use frozen cubes of coffee instead of ice which was great because it didn't get watered down. For food I also got the country peach sandwich with ham. Great spot! Food was exactly what I was looking for. I got the Captain, and it was spot on. I also got a chai latte with oat milk, and it was delicious, and exactly what you would expect. Service took a little bit of time, but I think that they were short-staffed, or it could've also been because it was sort of like a rush-hour time in the morning. Either way, the staff were super nice. I was waiting on a friend to get in from out of town, so I spent a few hours here. The ambience was great! A dozen or so tables, free wifi (the password is their dog's name), power outlets all about and a glass counter with muffins, scones and other pastries. Cute little cafe in churchill. We were there for a quick coffee before a tour. Coffee was great and the atmosphere was nice. The sweets looked amazing but we didn't try any. Had I stayed closer I definitely would have been back to try some other things.
