I love Grit Coffee! I'm so happy it came to RVA. I've been to their location in Charlottesville and here. This location is a good spot to get some work done. They have strong internet and the times I've visited, it doesn't get too busy. I love their seasonal drinks. My favorite thing about their coffee here is that it's fresh every time I've ordered it. It's a small space. They have some couch seating, bar seating, and communal seating. My partner and I bought their holiday beans and were obsessed with the blend. It was so delicious and smelled great. I highly recommend checking out this coffee shop.

Grit Coffee started out as a coffee shop in the UVA area and has been around since '08; they've expanded to several other locations in the Charlottesville and Crozet area, having one now in Richmond. We were in the area, picking up some items, and we saw this on our way out. The coffee shop has a minimalistic modern vibe to it, very clean, and had a handful of tables and communal seating. The menu offers beverages such as drip coffee, cortado, Americanos, mochas, and lattes, in addition to their seasonal specials. I was highly recommended the following, so I ordered: +the Maple Leaf Latte - made with espresso, maple syrup, cinnamon, and milk +the Spooky Bear Latte - made with espresso, honey, vanilla, seasonal spices, and milk Both drinks were extremely weak, and it tasted like hot water with a sprinkling of cinnamon/spices. The Spooky Bear Latte was slightly better than the Maple Leaf Latte, but definitely not close to them being described as 'so good' by the barista. Super disappointing! I'm glad I was able to give this place a try, but wouldn't return. +weak coffee +friendly service +street parking available

I've been to a Grit location elsewhere in VA and thoroughly enjoyed it- so I wanted to see how the RVA one was! Parking: Street parking around the small shop. I came around 2pm on a Saturday, and found parking within a 1 minute walk. There's a lot of space, I would guess it's busier in the mornings, but is a very walkable area. Interior: A really peaceful little shop! Plenty of seating and nice big tables, and it's very clean. Not a ton of ~cozy~ seating if you're looking for that, but lots of room for groups. Not a ton of outlets that I noticed, so probably more of a pen-and-paper-working or reading place. Nice soft music and bright with the big windows. Spacious for being such a small place! Drink: I got a flat white, and they did it half caf for me which can sometimes be difficult to find, so I was really pleased! They do up charge for alternative milks (oat and almond), but default to whole milk. I did like that they asked me what milk I wanted while I ordered bc sometimes I forget to substitute! The drink is delicious- smooth, roasted really nicely, creamy, and comforting. The quality of the coffee is great, and they treated the oat milk nicely. Food: Their pastries look really good, although I didn't order any. I will say I didn't see any vegan or gluten free options, which is always a bummer. Staff: Super nice, really chill, answered all my questions. The barista recommended brown sugar in the flat white and I really liked it! Overall, I will most definitely return with a book and more time to sit and enjoy the nice light and atmosphere at Grit!

Glad I got to try out Grit Coffee this morning on the Fourth of July! They have a good selection of black coffee and espresso based drinks along with a couple specialty lattes. The interior is very industrial looking but very homey and minimal - good vibes, overall! The barista was really helpful and was able to answer my questions and give me suggestions. They also have a good selection of blends and single origins (including limited edition and seasonal varieties). POUR OVER - 4.50 They had Ethiopian beans for the pour over and I got it iced since it was super hot. Personally, I'd probably get it hot next time because I couldn't taste a lot of the notes when it was iced. It did have a nice and light after taste of something sweet and a bit fruity. I would recommend the pour over here for sure!

My latte and doppio was good. The coffee shop itself was ok, but the energy was a little off. There is a little outdoor seating and more seating inside. Service was 50/50.

Cool local hang to grab a of tea or coffee. The aroma when you walk in is heavenly! Fresh roasted and ground coffee that would make Lorelai Gilmore swoon! Coffee, coffee, coffee... The inside is rather plain and industrial. It felt cold, metallic and sterile. There was a small sitting nook in the corner that was unavailable due to Covid, no indoor seating. But there were 4 tables outside to sit and sip! Nice spot to people watch and just chill. I spied several moms with their strollers hanging out on the patio. The coffee is robust, the iced coffee refreshing... and I had the hot Earl Grey tea (medium $2.50) which was strong! They offer just a few bakery goods, just some muffins and when I went in the sullen girl at the counter said the were sold out. They only supply a small batch, today they had blueberry, but alas, none for me... They would do better in the area if they offered a wider selection of bakery treats. There were several seasonal coffees sold in bags on one table that looked enticing. I've been to the Grit coffee in Charlottesville (not sure if it's still there), which had a lot more to offer by way of food. But hopefully, this spot can thrive and survive, despite the pandemic and another coffee shop around the corner. Time will tell. It seems this building has a lot of turnover.

I wish I found out about this place earlier! This is such a cute little cafe with quality drinks and nice ambiance for studying/meet ups! I got to try their Spooky bear latte which included "seasonal spices" that tasted like a mix of Thanksgiving and Christmas? Definitely had some cinnamon but also had some Chai vibes? Either way I really enjoyed my drink because the layer of foam was really fluffy and the drink itself was really smooth (not too watery or too milky). This latte was sweet as you might expect a latte to be but it wasn't overly sugary. The ambiance was great for getting work done or meeting up with someone. The store itself was spacious and quiet with some nice background music and fast internet. There were some plugs around! Staff were really friendly and I got my drinks pretty quickly. I love how they also have some on-site parking spots available. Street parking around that area seems to be pretty available too!

Great experience here! This was my first time visiting Grit, but definitely won't be my last. The service was welcoming and friendly, the coffee and chocolate chip cookies were delicious. Perfect place to grab a coffee or tea on a nice day. Nice and clean inside! Outdoor seating was nice on the bustling Libby Ave. The chocolate chip cookie is a must! Grit offers different specials for different seasons. My mom got an iced honey lavender latte and I got an iced golden chai. We were not disappointed. Pros: Free parking on the side of the building and additional parking in the back, pet-friendly patio & outdoor seating! Cons: There aren't any!

I was a bit disappointed that they only offer whole or oat milk, as I was used to having more milk options (like low fat or nonfat). I can't drink whole milk and I'm not a big fan of oat milk. The barista recommended that I try the oat milk and said if I didn't like the drink, they would make me something else. I asked for light oak milk and hoped for the best. My latte was served in layers, so I got a big blast of oat milk in my first sip, but after I mixed my latte, it tasted so much better. As anyone can see by my other reviews, I give a lot of 4 and 5-star ones, and am generally not a complainer. When I rate something low, there's really a reason. There was nothing for me to like about this place. First, there was no signage to speak of. It wasn't real easy to find. I didn't even know I had found the right place until I saw the name of the place on the bags of coffee. When I came in, it was a cold feeling, not a friendly one. Every person I dealt with behind the counter wasn't warm or inviting. I got the feeling that they felt I "should have known" where to order, and "should have known" where to wait, or to pick up my coffee. I got a takeout hot coffee but had to interrupt and kindly ask for a lid. And when I did I got a vibe like I was an irritation or something. I went out to the car with my coffee and told my husband I hoped it was really outstanding coffee with what I had to go through to get it. And you know what, it wasn't all that great. It's not worth going back for. I don't get why people like or recommend this place.
