Stopped by here twice while driving around looking for coffee. Parking was a little tough out front since it's been busy every time we went. Inside is pretty big, but almost all seats were taken each time. We've tried an Iced Mocha, the Pandan Matcha Latte, and the Five Year Bloom. Really loved all their drinks, especially the Five Year Bloom. Wasn't too sweet but great mix of coconut and dates with coffee. Staff here was really nice and would definitely come back through.
Afterglow Coffee Cooperative has an amazing atmosphere, perfect for working or catching up with friends. I love that they serve coffee but also offer wine by the bottle or glass. Their pastries are all fantastic and my favorite is the cookies and cream pastry. I usually order my regular, an iced Americano with oat milk, and it's delicious every time. I also started getting the smoked trout spread with focaccia, which has been a great dish to snack on while finishing up work. In addition to the smoked trout spread, they offer bagels with different cream cheese spreads, a kale Caesar, and their popular tiramisu dessert. The staff are always friendly and will bring your drink to you if you decide to sit down. I also like that they stopped offering free Wi-Fi on the weekends. It promotes a space that helps people be more present, and I love that.
Steaming hot chai latte that hits the spot, rich, fragrant, and perfectly spiced for sweetness and warmth. Every sip feels like a cozy hug. The coffee house atmosphere is on point: inviting and relaxed, making you want to linger a little longer......
Great coffee! Friendly service. Inviting atmosphere despite some design challenges. The counter area does not flow well and exiting is tricky as there are steep steps and the door opens inward. Will be returning.
I. Love. This place. My friend lives close by so we came here a few days to work when I was visiting Richmond over the fall. I started with the seasonal matcha iced with a bagel. My friend got the hot matcha, personally I prefer the cold which had more flavor. The bagel was pretty good, as was the cream cheese but not my favorite thing on the menu. Once we had this we moved onto the espresso with raspberry cream, fantastic drink. They should make it all year. The only down side is a friend who wanted a matcha with this topping was told it wasn't possible which I'm not sure how that would be. We ordered the bean dip and salmon cream cheese type dip (blanking on the names... it's been a few months) both were great and came with fresh bread which was so yummy. Personally I preferred the salmon dip but I would definitely order the bean dip again as well. I ordered the green bean salad for lunch and would have this again and again if I lived in town. The flavors here were all so good I almost wish the food menu was larger so I could try more. The area inside is pretty large with many many tables to work however it's usually quite busy. The staff is really nice in fun. Over all one of my favorite places in Richmond.
Sort of getting obsessed with this cute cafe! I LOVE the aesthetic and the overall vibe there. Parking was pretty easy as well. First time I went, I tried their pandan matcha and it was SO GOOD. I went back yesterday and wanted to try something else, I got their dirty chai which was pretty good. It's been busy the two times that I've been there but the service is fast. Customer service is good. Just a chill spot to be honest. There's decent amount of seating, it's always busy when I go so I sat at the bar area. I will say the drinks are a little pricey but that may be due to the gratuity free thing, I'm not sure.
I loved the interior and the aesthetic. It's perfect for doing work and there was plenty of seating and there's even a small bar view of the roasting setup in the back. It's clear that they're passionate about coffee through the care they take to make an excellent cup of coffee and patience they take to answer any questions you might have. The barista was super friendly and answered my questions about their beans and recommended one for making espresso at home. I ended up grabbing two bags of the Afterglow Perpetual Motion to try and a hot vanilla latte to go, which was excellent. I would love to go back and try some of their other speciality drinks the next time I'm in the area. Note: you'll have to find parking on the adjacent streets, but it was relatively easy to do so, there were plenty of spaces available when we went on a Saturday afternoon.
If you're looking for a "Hip" lowkey coffee place, this is the place to go. I ordered the Mocha Latte (extra sweet) and was able to concentrate on getting my assignments done with minimal distractions. The baristas were very friendly, helpful, and communicated great for a first time experience. Will be back!!
I got an iced pandan matcha latte ($7). The pandan flavor was a light sweet coconut flavor and tasted good with the matcha. My only complaint is the size and ice ratio. There was a ton of ice in a small cup, and after a few it began to melt and taste watered down. Staff were nice and they were able to make the drink in a few minutes. Pandan matcha is pretty good overall, but the pandan flavor could be stronger. Small local shop that is perfect for a study/date or getting work done! Not amazing in terms of taste, but still pretty neat that they offer different types of drinks. Nice staff and clean location.
wow! i wasn't expecting much of their food when i came to this coffee shop but they blew my socks off! this coffee shop has decent seating but seems to get busy often. the staff was helpful in finding what to get off of the menu. i enjoyed their chai latte, once i mixed the cinnamon on top into the drink. the danish was super tasty but their newly released focaccia took the gold. it was so flavorful by itself. they offer some dips as well and i want to try them next time i'm in the area.
Afterglow coffee Vibes: 5/5 the brick walls, exposed piping, cute art (i love all the prints on the wall), and plants come together to make such a nice and cozy environment! There are various seating options and cozy nooks. Great place to hang out or catch up with a friend! Service: good, 4/5 no complaints Food: 3/5, this is more of a coffee and snack place which is perfectly fine! Just dont expect a large meal while you are here. A slice of sourdough with cream cheese will set you back something like 5 bucks. Granted, it was some of the best sourdough ive had in a while. The pastry was also yum (sorry i forgot what i got). Drink: 5/5 loved the pandan latte: good matcha and pandan flavor. The pandan flavor shone through, and the drink as a whole was not too sweet but nicely balanced. Cortado allowed the nice espresso flavor to shine. Worth: 4.5/5. Food is a bit expensive but it is very good quality. The drinks so far have been good, and fairly priced, and the industrial yet cozy atmosphere is done SO well, cant wait to go back.
I've been on the hunt for good study spots and Afterglow is now one of my favorites! They have a decent amount of seating, mainly low top and booths, with free wifi. The only downside is that they do not have many outlets so make sure your electronics are fully charged if you plan to work. The menu is pretty extensive and they have a good mix of expected and unexpected drinks. The inside is quite surprisingly spacious and it has a lot of natural light with greenery strung throughout. The staff is really friendly and offered me their recommendations off of the menu. I ended up trying their pandan matcha latte and sourdough toast with smoked trout spread. I love a good carb at any time of the day and their toast really satisfied that craving for me. I had never had smoked trout spread before and it was a welcome salty, savory addition to the toast. I will say that the portion size for the spread is quite large so you'd be able to share it if you got two slices of toast. This is a good spot if you'd like to try some unique menu options that are slightly different than typical coffee shop offerings and want to get some work done!

Charming indoor aesthetic with exposed views of the roastery. A comprehensive menu provides options for the enthusiastic and casual coffee drinker alike. I personally enjoyed the espresso tonic, served with an orange slice. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and I'm excited to come back again. read more
I was really looking forward to the pandan matcha but was disappointed as the matcha flavor was very weak and almost nonexistent. The drink tasted like pandan milk:( the vanilla latte was good though! Such a nice place to get work done but wish they had wifi on the weekends read more

Wow this place is really something special. The first thing I noticed was how aesthetically beautiful it was. It's spacious, open, filled with plants and art. Looking at their website, I learned that they rotate pastries from different local bakery, all among the most well renowned bakeries in Richmond. Like Birdies, Axelsdotter, and Sugar & Twine. Looks like they also have Nate's Bagels on menu regularly, and an association with Sub Rosa (the locals will know these are the BEST spots). I believe Sub Rosa uses Afterglow coffee at their shop. Today they had axelsdotter pastries, which looked amazing. I decided to go for the apple cake and it was delicious! Super fresh. Tasted like if an apple pie and a pound cake had a baby. Today I tried the hot hickory latte with whole milk and it was AMAZING. The espresso isn't acidic tasting like at some places. It has a smooth and light taste. Perfectly in balance with the sweetness and milk of the beverage. The hickory is similar to a honey latte. Another really cool thing about this place is that they're a cooperative. Meaning everyone who works there is a owner of the business. Everyone gets paid a living wage, and for that reason, they clearly state that they do not accept gratuity. Love that so much. Will definitely be going back. And probably often. read more

Favorite coffeeshop in Richmond? Yep - this one. And it's not really close?! This place is (1) ginormous (2) gorgeous (3) conducive to conversation/socializing (4) well-lit and decorated and (5) delicious. Feels like an authentic coffeeshop - and is somewhere I could station up for hours on end to get work done. Reminds me of a lot of places back home. Coffee was delicious with some quality beans in case you want to take some home too. The baristas are always super friendly and can make just about anything. Cafe pastries are delish here too. I love this little weird edge of Scott's Addition with its one way street and back-in parking. Seems like a dead end in the middle of nowhere (when you're right off Boulevard). A perfect place to hide. And this is where you'll find Afterglow. Stopped in to meet an associate for coffee (tea for me) and picked the Malabar--an herbal tonic blend of Chinese ginger, turmeric, lemongrass, black peppercorn, and licorice root. Add honey and yum! Cute presentation and lovely staff, all smiles. Was only there for the tea this time, but I hear there's light fare food, so I'll definitely come back to try that. Definitely give this co-op a try! read more

My quest to try different local coffee shops took me here today. Parking was a bit challenging on a Sunday morning, but we finally found a spot. Once we entered the building, the smell of coffee was super welcoming, especially on a cold morning. I was a bit disappointed at the limited flavors available for lattes and also the lack of low fat or non fat milk options. I ended up getting a whole milk vanilla latte, which looked beautiful, but didn't have a strong enough coffee taste for my liking, and was tepid when served. The whole milk was also a bit off putting as I'm not used to drinking it. The saving grace was the deliciously moist banana chocolate chip muffin from Sugar and Twine that I bought to go with my coffee. When we were there, there were no seats available so we stood and enjoyed our coffee and muffins as it was too cold to sit outside. I did notice that they had quite a few happy hour beer and wine options as well. It's a cute shop, but the limited options would not make me want to return. read more

Afterglow is such a lovely and welcoming coffee shop at the back edge of Scott's Addition (where the back-in parking is) (I cannot back-in park). I've been twice so far, once for a takeaway cold brew and once this past weekend for a nice long catch-up with one of my closest friends. I ordered the mocha latte and loved the art. I'd say I preferred the taste of the cold brew to the mocha but both were great. I'll definitely keep Afterglow in my rotation for future coffee trips! read more

Love this coffee shop! It is always so lively when you go! Everyone behind the counter is so friendly, and it has a feeling unlike other coffee shops in the city! The honey latte is so good and the Fontaine cheese croissant is delicious! There is plenty of seating and perfect for going with a friend or going to get some work done! read more
A coffee shop born of love for community and coffee. I love taking friends here for a little coffee date. Not too much in the way of pastries or food, if that's what you're looking for. Mostly, the vibes are lovely for conversation or working/studying in the zone. They are a roaster, so you're able to pick up blends and single origin coffee bags to grind at home. They also sell different brew methods as well. If I had to pick a coffee shop that encapsulated Richmond, it would be here. Also parking is fine most of the time but generally I humiliate myself trying to parallel park or turn around to fit into a diagonal street space lmao. read more
I love Afterglow's new after hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Afterglow Coffee is definitely one of my top local haunts. I adore the people who work here, I'm obsessed with the pandan matcha latte (also adore the mocha), and love that they're a co-op. When they added organic and natural wines to their shelves, I got even more excited. They'll host wine tastings and have a really great selection to pick from. I adore the natural lighting that spills into the space (especially during a tasting). On Friday, it's great to come here to work with a morning drink, then order a late lunch once the 2pm After Dark menu gets brought out. I tried their After Dark food menu recently and loved it. I had a very tasty nori kale caesar salad with yummy soy sauce eggs and a side of incredible bread and butter. It was a wholesome meal that made me beyond happy. I adore Afterglow and highly recommend it to anyone. read more
Love the coffee bean aroma and the overall minimalist vibes! I've been to Afterglow before but never had their ice pandan matcha until I saw other Yelp reviews! I appreciated the good pandan flavors but their matcha was more an aftertaste than a prominent flavor. As someone who had a lot of pandan desserts growing up I was nervous the pandan would be too artificial or too sweet but the sweetness was appropriate and the flavors were more authentic than expected. Again I really like how spacious Afterglow is. It has a good amount of table seating, some bar seating by the back (plus you get to see them process their beans I think), and a cute nook in the back. Loved the greenery and plants. I can totally see myself getting some work done here or meeting with friends! read more
We got the iced pandan matcha latte w/ oat milk from a recommendation. It was so good. Balance of each flavor was present and not overwhelming. A perfect drink. The amount you get and the price point was just a $1.50 too much. I've never been to this area and surprisingly had a lot of other businesses around. The road kinda looks like an alley. They said they had ramp access in the back entrance. I really liked the look of the cafe. Warm with lots of plants. I bet it be really nice to be there on a rainy day. read more

Service was quick and friendly, and the inside was well-decorated and spacious. We got two items: - Iced americano with a splash of cream: Good quality espresso, so the americano itself was great. Half and half was self serve, so that was nice. - Pandan matcha latte: Loved this! Although it was a little sweet, the pandan flavor was perfect, but I think it does outshine the matcha just a bit. read more
Snuggly, non-pretentious coffee shop with beautiful local art on the walls (I bought a cat print for a friend bday gift) and the best latte I've had in a while. Take your time and enjoy it in house, drinking out of a mug is my favorite way to have a latte. They also serve local pastries, the Birdie's ham and cheese croissant hit the spot as I caught up on emails. read more

this is a review specifically for the pandan matcha latte: i ordered this as an iced latte, which i think contributed to the muted flavors of the drink. pandan AND matcha certainly comes through, but with nothing to carry them forward. even upon the first sip it tasted quite watered down. my brother and i were debating if some sort of roasted flavor was necessary to compliment the drink... i will say it was refreshing. just not my cup of latte so to speak. love that this shop is a cooperative. wishing you all the best! read more

Definitely a cool little spot to check out if you want a coffee/beer/wine or small bite. Being near down town Richmond area the prices are pretty steep(doubble for expresso shots) for coffee and a doppio compared to the rest of VA spots I've been trying. Staffvis friendly, coffee us good. Definitely worth checking out. Oh,.. and they're open on Sundays. read more
