I love Black Hand! It's on my regular rotation for coffee spots, especially in the warmer months as their interior is pretty small. I feel like a perfect temperature-weather friend hang or date day is stopping by BH and then walking to the VFMA or Truckle. BH is always hopping on the weekends and their lattes are very tasty, especially iced. Service is consistently friendly and prompt. They really do a great job in the Museum District. I never find it too terribly difficult to find a parking spot nearby, either. read more

This is such a cute little corner coffee shop that immediately gives off nature-meets-hippie vibes in the best way. The service was quick and efficient, which made the experience even better. There's a cozy outdoor space where you can sit on a bench and enjoy your drink, and the fact that they allow dogs out back was perfect for us since we had our pup with us. I ordered an iced chai latte, and it was honestly one of the best I've ever had--spiced just right and super refreshing. My fiancé got an iced coffee with cookie butter, and it was equally delicious. This is the CUTEST little neighborhood cafe. I recently checked out Black hand coffee and it's a small coffee shop with very few seating, however on nicer days. It was tepid at best, with very little discernable coffee flavor. It tasted like a warm vanilla milk. Came back for my usual iced dirty chai! They had the seating area open. It's so cozy inside and they have different homemade goods available from local artists. This time that had a bunch of cute crocheted animals available for purchase. The servers are always super kind and the food and is made fresh. I say this because some places will give you microwaved eggs, but that's not the case here! My partner and I both got the medium roast drip coffee and enjoyed it. I like that they have a creamer station so I can portion the creamer and sugar myself. The outdoor seating is super cute. I got a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich on an everything bagel. It was standard but in a good way, it was tasty and satisfied my breakfast sandwich craving. I liked that the bagel was toasted but still soft and that the cheese was melted just enough. Stopped in here while I was dashing into work in the morning. When I need something quick and strong, I usually just order a double espresso. It had been years since I've been by black hand. It's always been a place that I've liked. And today I learned it is still great! The coffee itself was delicious. But my favorite part was how incredibly quick the service was. I was in and out in about 60 seconds. The staff were friendly. This place is a quaint and cute. They usually have art from local artists on display and for sale. It seemed to be a good spot to come work, there were a few people set up with their laptops. read more

BLUF: Great coffee. Needs more specialty drinks listed on the menu. Chill service. Drinks (4/5): They don't have a lot of written specialty drinks, but you can always make your own with different flavors. But keep in mind, each syrup is $0.85 extra. The almond/oat/soy milk is also $0.85 extra. A medium hot latte is $4.55. They have a "staff favorites" chalkboard with 3 specialty drinks on it. Today, I got the Vanilla Lavender medium hot drink. It was absolutely delicious; it had a bit too much foam but the flavor was perfect. Service (5/5): The staff is always quiet & chill. Just sitting there, waiting for people to talk to them. I really appreciate that since no one wants an "in your face" batista BEFORE you've had your coffee. Ambiance (5/5): When you walk in, you immediately see the counter. When you walk around, you can see local paintings & pottery that's for sale. Small paintings are $10, mediums are $15, and large are $20. They pottery ranges from $30-$45 (from the ones I picked up). There's some indoor & outdoor seating. When it gets busy, the place gets very crowded since it's a small area, so the line wraps around everywhere. TLDR: Great coffee. I arrived at 3:50pm - store closes at 4 a and the barista said he would not brew another cup of coffee for me. I think if you are an open coffee shop, you should serve coffee. Only in Richmond 1 day and made some effort to get here before closing. Could have been a hero review today, but instead really bummed out a customer. Silver lining. Since this place would not serve me, actually found an amazing place (bustling, great service, would have definitely had coffee 10 minutes before closing) just down the road. Don't settle! I love a good neighborhood coffeeshop - and just about everything location-wise and ambiance-wise is prime for this shop. Their logo is super cool too! Overall liked what I ordered - initially requested a drip coffee with a pump of cookie butter syrup, but with it being the end of the day + the drip not being fresh, the barista offered me an americano instead - and let me keep both! My partner enjoyed her Dirty Chai too. Perhaps it was a product of walking in when we did (an hour before close) but the barista was pretty frazzled and very haphazardly + messily put our drinks together - and the place needed some music... but again, cutting it some slack because we were there later! The iced dirty chai with oat milk was a good choice this morning and the chai flavor was fantastic! It is a bit pricy with the milk alternative (after tax it was $5.46?) but definitely a worthy splurge. I would prefer a stronger chai flavor though. They sell coffee beans here too. Normally I wouldn't do this... but I care too much about coffee to let it go. I wish I would have seen a review like this myself, so here we go: TLDR: go here if it's convenient and you don't care about coffee. avoid it otherwise. Pros: Good vibes, cool ambience, seemingly well-intentioned. Cons: The worst coffee I would ever expect from a dedicated coffee shop. Got a medium roast drip and espresso. Espresso was way too hot and tasteless. Made me grimace, and had to chug it hatefully to get it out of my face. But hey, it's easy to get espresso wrong. Not acceptable, but at least I understand it. But it was the same story with the coffee. Now, this is frankly unforgivable (because how do you screw up drip coffee???). This tasted like water and barley. No coffee taste at all, no taste except for sadness and disappointment. The coffee I brew at home with a tiny auto-drip would put this abominable disgrace to shame. Even trying to pair the barista's jovial demeanor with the taste was not enough to redeem it. It doesn't matter how nice you are if your coffee is garbage. Marginally better than the worst Starbucks I've had. And to add insult to injury: no caffeine boost afterward... makes me wonder what the hell was even in the cup. It should be a crime to charge for this junk. I came here because my power went out, but I had to brew another cup at home when it came back on later. JFC what a waste of time and money. Okay, I get it. If you live nearby or pass it on your way to work or school, and you're not picky, then fine. But don't go out of your way, unless of course you like the taste of sadness. I am only writing this in hopes that the establishment will be motivated to step it up, because this is an embarrassment that I would be ashamed to live with as the proprietor myself. As far as coffee is concerned, making it at home during this time of crisis is fine, but let's face it, it doesn't always measure up to what the experts are able to do. A well-known expert in Richmond is Black Hand Coffee, a mainstay of the fan area and a well-known neighborhood spot that retains its combination of neighborhood charm with world class execution of seriously great coffee. So how is their take-out? Well, it's really not too different from when they were allowing guests inside, since the store interior was so small, it was usually a good bet that your order would be to-go anyway. The ordering process on the Cloosiv app (no idea where some of these apps get their names, but that's another story) is smooth and simple. Order about 10-15 minutes ahead, and the coffee is there waiting for you on the pick-up side of the storefront (the right window). If you are walking up to order, the left hand side has the register. Now, most that visit do understand the current social distancing etiquettes, although there was one idiot when I was picking up recently that didn't understand that I was waiting behind him, albeit a few feet away from the storefront, until the pickup area was clear by about a yard, and walked right up in front of me to order at the window. When I told him I had been waiting, he looked at me like I was crazy being near the curb, and when I reminded him that it was recommended we be apart by at least six feet, he basically ignored me, mumbled something about paranoia. See you in the hospital. This is not Black Hand's fault, but I think maybe a clearer division or instructions between the pickup and ordering area isn't a bad idea, maybe just put your standee in the middle of the two windows instead of in front of your obviously locked front door. But I digress, how's the coffee? Excellent, and again, it's good even if you have to wait 10-15 minutes to drink it. I will say that some of the streets around Black Hand are not paved well, so your coffee holder may not be enough to keep your drink from spilling and staining, so if you have access to either an old Starbucks-style splash stopper, or even a small piece of cork if you drink wine, (even a pencil eraser works) it will certainly help keep the coffee in the cup and off of your pants. In addition to their coffee, and their awesome canned cold brew, they do make a limited number of breakfast sandwiches on bagels or english muffins. I personally like the sausage, egg and cheese. So Black Hand passes the test for great coffee to grab and go. Just be ready to work your way up to the store front carefully, order ahead on Cloosiv, avoid the occasional clueless person, and continue to social distance so that these establishments aren't waiting longer to reopen and re-welcome visitors. Really cute local place. Seems like it was a neighborhood fave. Almost every morning my boyfriend and I picked up a cup of coffee there. I'm a big latte fan and they had a ton of different latte options/flavorings. They also had milk substitutes. Quick service making the coffee, and good quality. This IS the only spot I get coffee in Richmond, VA I travel often from out of state into Richmond which was my stomping ground for 10 years. My first stop is always Black Hand Coffee! I pick up a nice gift card first son who works in the area then go in about my day. I try and choose Airbnb's close by so I can hit it every morning. My fav is the dirty chai tea and an Asiago bagel with cream cheese, fried egg, bacon and a slice of tomato all toasted. What I love is that all the locals are regular as well so even if I only come once a year the same people still are in live getting their daily deal. Like most other coffee shops in RVA, this place is parking challenged. Yes, it's in a neighborhood and I supposed if you lived near-by, you would be glad, but alas, I am not. It appears they have one type of drip coffee each day, and today it was Costa Rica. A little more than mild and good flavor. You will note that this is a 'pay & pump' option, you pay first and then you pump from one of 3 near-by carafe's. You will see the fridge next to them and this is where you will find a carton of half & half or whole milk if you prefer. I also got a toasted wheat bagel with cream cheese, it was OK. The cc was not that great. I like that you get a discount when you BYOC and it's just a $1 for a refill. Open from 7a to 5p daily. There is one outside picnic table so get it to go. read more
